Sounds like a fun exercise... a DMing prompt rather than a writing prompt. Shuffle your deck of AD&D cards and draw a hand of 10... now write a campaign around the ten cards you drew.
Sure, why not. Not DnD, but my old Runequest DM had cards for items, events and enemies. When something was bout to happen, he drew event-card. "oh, it's ambush! And enemies are... Three bandits!" After battle he took item card and loot was that. Usually shitty stuff like a lantern. One of us was like "oh, it could be magic lantern..." and story goes on. Great concept if GM likes to improvise.

I have two 500 count boxes (I think they are 500) of these, and I use them extensively in my games. You can use these in D&D basic, 2nd Edition, 3rd and 3.5. With some tweaking, you can use them in 4th and 5th as well as Pathfinder. They are dead useful. You can also use them as DM characters, because they have the levels, and you can even use them for quick villains when needed.
Yo ProJared, I really love your DND videos. You always know how to make your DND stories sound real interesting, keep up the good work! Thank you for making these awesome videos.
DnDecember is always my favorite time of year thanks to your videos. Honestly, do whatever you like. Unboxing, stories, tips, whatever. I love watching all of it.
Al Quadim is a campaign setting set in the Zakhara peninsula to the west of Kara-Tur an south of Faerun on Aber-Toril. It's a part of Forgotten Realms.
Recently moved in to a friend's house who had some D&D novels sitting in a box on the porch. They told me I could look through it. I did that today after watching this and this box also had a long container filled with these cards. Today was awesome.
I'd love a love stream where you go through the whole bunch, backs included. Those are amazing, I want to see more weird stuff, like dnd board games or that dnd cartoon. Or the adventure based off that dnd cartoon...
I loved those cards when I was younger. I actually found them recently and the stories I made up for the one's you can write yourself are fantastic, especially for the half-orc card you showed. Love the D&December videos, brilliant to watch.
I've been really enjoying D&December this year Jared. two years ago it was part of the reason that my friends and I started playing D&D , and it has only gotten better.
I love seeing videos like this ProJared, and I love D&December. I used to have a group to play D&D with, but after schedules started conflicting and group members moving away, I have not played a session of D&D in over three years now. I loved it, as I have a mental disability, and it provided me with a form of escape that video games come close to; but the amount of roleplaying in D&D cannot even be compared to. I need to start looking for an online group because each and every video you have for D&December only makes me long for another session of D&D -- the amount of stories that you have are amazing to watch, and remind me of the stories we had within our group when it was still functional. I hope you continue to enjoy making these kinds of videos (and everything else D&December-related) as it is amazing to watch, and I love every minute of them. Stay awesome, ProJared!
Just gotta say I'm loving watching these vids while writing my next campaign. Especially with your more educational videos which have really started to make me think about what I want to go into a good campaign as the DM. Thank you for so much inspiration, I think you have single-handedly helped cure my lack of motivation to write.
Great work as always, I'm a huge fan of Dndcember! This his a soft spot for me, nostalgia-wise, as I had hundreds of these cards I had picked up from a closing card shop back in the day, and seeing them again reminded me of something we used to do with them. The DM of our game would pull out items and make a deck (using card sleeves and regular playing cards to hide the back) and anytime we'd need a treasure for doing something, we'd draw from the deck depending on the situation. This lead to some interesting plot hooks, and some fun stories!
2:05 *phone rings* "Bodhi's Pool Repair. ...Really? Counterfeit-proof... Jared said that? Hmm... Sorry to hear that, sir. We'll send our guys over right away."
I really like this concept. Wish Gale Force Nine would sell packs like this with the spell cards they already have and additional magical items and such. If I would have played more AD&D back in the day I would have loved this!
This was actually really cool, Jared! I mean, the art on the cards may have been... Meh, but honestly the idea of these cards are pretty nifty, especially for a way to hand out items (Before this video I was actually going to take index cards and use one side to draw something to represent the magic item and the other side to represent the cool effect it has, despite not being the best artist). Anyways, I would definitely enjoy seeing something else like this or similar to this video.
Thank you for this. I am now going to roll a derp warrior that holds their sword by the blade portion and goes around with the "Come at me, bro!" look.
I'd love to see you talk about Dark Alliance and its sequel. I grew up with them not knowing they were D&D, and to this day I still love pulling them out and playing one.
I like how you constantly look at the camera sitting next to you. It's like you're showing these cards to a friend and keep checking to see if he's interested in them.
I used to play a crap ton of Spell Fire (Card Game) with a bunch of friends. Spent way too much money on that series. lol but so many good AD&D characters in that series of Cards. I particularly was into Dragon Lance at the time because of the Novels and Graphic Novels. Those were so well drawn for the time!
Context, even if it's only very base level for this kind of stuff is really neat. Personally I wouldn't mind deeper dives in to any specific cards or anecdotes you might have around them. Obviously with this more fringe stuff those connections might not be super abundant. The bad art really made the good art stand out in this case. I've always wondered if artists got commissioned to create a handful of cards and the rest got farmed out to art students or accountants. I'm personally a sucker for blind style opening videos. The obvious potential for fun surprises + the gambling style thrill is great. Great work as always. Happy Holidays Jared
Separate the cards into the categories of the same setting "NPCs, Items, Locations" and shuffle them. Now you basically have an organic rollable table to generate stuff for your campaign. I recommend next time you get a Forgotten Realms only set since that's what you are most familiar and you will have higher chances of seeing cool NPCs that you recognize.
I used to have some of these, back in the day. Mine were all mixed in with my cards from Dragon Quest (One of the "introductory" D&D games from the 90s).
The opening frame of this video is a very good photo of you Jared. Very handsome. I'm not trying to meme either, you legit have good energy in that pose with the chest. Love it. Can't wait for this year's D&Dcember!

Or read from a 329 pg book
