This is invaluable advice you've taken your own time to film and edit for free, and I just want to add that I'm grateful to you for doing this. I'm working on my brother's guitar this year and a re-fret will be needed. Thankyou!
I really like this new series you guys are doing. When I do fret ends I use the same stewmac fret end file and finish up with 3M flexible polishing papers, also from stewmac, and that combination always works out great.
Thanks my friend. They are not particularly well received in terms of views. Oddly enough Steve Mac did this same video a few hours after mine that has 10 times the watchers. Hahaha what can I do?
Thank you for sharing. Looking forward to the next video
Thanks. Learned a few things. I need magnifying headband now!
I tell you what, you will see stuff that you may not even notice you missed before. I hope you get one and love it.
I like the little Hosco fret end files better.
You can really define the shape of the ends!
S/M carries a couple of them, and Philadelphia LS has all three sizes.
You do you man
Have you tried them…?
You just might like them…🤷🏼♂️😎
In digging this series. Looking forward to the buffing and polishing vid. It seems like a lot of people do that step differently.
We will see if people start watching them. I think they are fun and informative but, so far, they are not showing well.
Good info.
Like the chisel example
I like that one too, thanks for watching my friend
David Robinson is my favorite basketball player. Him and Larry.
Mr. Robinson is a class act. One of those guys who makes you want to be a better person.
Great Video Matt, thanks ! 😊
You show Us all, the amount of Time, this type of Detail work requires . 😉
Cheers ✌️ 🤙 🇨🇦
P.S. Phillip McKnight always says, "The Sock doesn't Lie !" 😳
Ol Phil is correct
??? Hey Matt, do you have a separate buffing machine for doing frets?. Or do you just change out the buffing pads ?
We use a specific low speed buffer for frets
I've had my eye on those Stewmac Magnifiers for a while...but they're so pricey. I'd hate to find they're just like Dollar Store reading glasses (Which I also have). I bought TWO of their 6"x4" lenses & was bummed. Got a 10x & 15x loop but it's too small to work thru, can only inspect after the fact.
I think you will really dig the magnifier, I know they are expensive but they are worth it.
Is a hemispherical fret end the ultimate goal? Are they more desirable? I've never played a neck with anything but standard fret ends and never had any problems with one that was properly filed and finished off.
Well... I'd say that is a personal preference. I think that hemispherical fret ends look cool and are a neat upgrade that I rarely do on custom builds these days due to cost. You certainly don't need them and in this video I even say that we are not going for that style. Simply breaking off the sharp corners will make a huge difference in player comfort. I think all guitars should play great but not all do. A little TLC goes a long way.

Thanks. I've seen them around and they're pointed out as a great feature going the extra mile for manufacturers, but I've not heard anybody talk about how they feel compared to normal ends.
That's some good info. Maybe I'm mis-remembering, but isn't David Robinson left handed?
He is left handed. He plays guitar left handed and plays bass right handed
@@TexasToastGuitars That doesn't seem confusing at all!
What happens if i dont want a 30-degree angle on my fret edge???? Or i could say i want more fret surface on fret edge to make the string less likely to drop off or fall off????👍
What happens?
I guess that if you don't want and bevel on your frets that you are building you simply don't put one on there or make your neck wider.
If you are buying a guitar and you don't want a bevel you might be out a luck.
I guess I don't understand the question.
@TexasToastGuitars
Maybe settle for like a 15-degree angle .
Have y'all seen the Fret Maestro? Is it for real?
I have never seen I, I should check it out
i don't care for inlays on my fingerboards. Does that mean I"m too lazy to learn how to do it? Possibly, but I really do not like inlays. They are gauche and real players don't need them. LOL.
