- Singapore is geologically challenged and with climate change, a growing population and economic competition - the country needs land to develop. To overcome the pervasive space challenge, the country is investing in megaprojects that will help overcome these problems and take it into the next century.
One such project is the Deep Tunnel Sewerage System. By using new technology, this infrastructure will also take Singapore’s sewage management into the next century. But tunnelling under built up areas is less than ideal. The team has to move massive tunnel boring machines that are each the length of 10 SBS buses underground. And that’s not the biggest challenge. Deep below, they have to contend with geological challenges and the ever present risk of sinkholes.

Currently I am working in Singapore at a nursing home. Originally from Sri Lanka. I feel shamed of my own country when I see how far this little country is thinking in to the future for the generations to come. How creative they are in forming new opportunities and whatsoever that the people would look for.
And the discipline within the nation is beyond expectancy even though there are some bitter incidents in time to time. But, overall, the whole country is very positive thinking and well mannered.
Those people back in Sri Lanka have lot more to learn from this small country. I am really proud how Singapore thinks for their own people and their future.

As a Singaporean, I don't think Sri Lankans have anything to be ashamed about. We were fortunate to grow up in a country that gave us opportunities. We were lucky that the smartest people in the land were inspired to go into government in the post-colonial era -- the smartest people would not go into politics today. My grandparents were simple villagers who were lifted out of kampungs and poverty. They worked hard, even if it was the sort of labour most city people wouldn't consider important work. In short, every family who lived in Singapore during the last few decades got lucky. Sri Lankans have so many difficulties to contend with today, and it is by no fault of the ordinary people. Someone who hustles hard to provide for their family cannot be considered ill-disciplined in the first place.
The problem always lie with corrupted leader who is only interested in accumulating more wealth.

I was in Singapore for 9 months working for the project in 2019/2020. Doing soil engineering works for the TBM to excavate through Jurong Formation rock mainly build from sedimentary rock that covers south-west portion of the Singapore island. Strengthening the soil or the foundation along the TBM route of excavation by grouting method such as rock fissure grouting by filling the void inside the rock with cement pumped with high pressure. Singapore is a nice place to work and stay....

But it’s true they have more potential than Singapore in terms of land development. For that Singapore has efficient urban planning to mitigate yet making it most comfortable and safe to live in. And the countries you speak of, potential, will remain as potential until the crippling issues are resolved.
The NewSand is extremely exciting. Not only that being burnt slag (waste from burning rubbish), it makes our structures stronger than ever! And eradicating the issue of shrinking landfill areas! Well done Singapore scientists! Proud of you guys!

Singapore is always at the forefront of pioneering technologies in not only the use of the land they do have, but the land they don't have as well, truly amazing projects in general, but absolutely stunning to see the pride in which they conduct their work, and the way they're looking forward so far into the future for generations to come...I wish so many more countries could take a leaf out of their book and use the same foresight. And Singapore is most lucky and honoured to have Australia supporting the floating solar farm project. And age old renting of land to train our troops in the outback.

Singapore is in the forefront of what...??? To not allow democracy .....maybe that is something to be proud of...??? This video is not very informed on facts. They claim in the video that such tunnel project has "never been done before" ....and let me add ....that is only if you talk about Singapore.... Tunnel boring machines was not invented in Singapore nor was that kind of tunnel boring anything new ....this is something that has been done in Europe for decades and also where they have got the machinery and technology from.....
i worked on Phase 1 of this project from 2003 to 2005 driving 1 of the TBM's - it was very wet and difficult.
The people and the food made up for all the hardship we faced at work.

I'm addicted to any construction related documentaries...esp ones like this. They are so interesting.
Singapore is a role model for how indian, chinese and indonesian, asean can live and work together.
As an engineer I can appreciate new advanced methods and technologies as long as they are for good and not wars. In the land I live most roads and bridges are falling apart. The only thing advancing is the removal of our freedoms. I know the people of Singapore take great pride in their work.

In Louisiana, USA, a glass recycling project is grinding glass to create replacement for sand in concrete. No heat required. The glass has the same angular shape they are looking for.
I hope they will do a documentary on this. This is good to know

The scale of the project seems outrageous when you look at how small Singapore is geographically.
This was built to last for century i like that mindset. To be innovative and progessive more than you expect.

Several discrepancies about TBM's.
The TBM would move an elephant hahaha.
A TBM would move a herd of elephants and several herds of cows + the farmers.
The TBM costs a $1,000,000 hahaha.
Maybe a very old and used TBM.
A 6m mixshield TBM, as featured here, would cost at least $10,000,000 approximately.
Depending on the size (diameter) and type of TBM they can cost much more.
The 6m mixshield TBM featured in the video would advance at 3m an hour hahaha.
This is not possible with this size and type of TBM. It leads you to believe that a 900m tunnel would be excavated in 300 hours or 12½ days. The truth is a 900m tunnel would take about 6 - 8 months depending on geology/breakdowns/dependability of supply of usables.
I have work on tunnels in Singapore on 3 occasions.

Having visited Singapore 10 years ago for a few days, I have to say what a fantastic place it is. Street crime is almost non existent the place is beautiful and clean, the people are really friendly and kind. If I were a younger man I’d love to live there.
I was waiting for an Indian engineer to pop up and there he was! It's funny hearing him with a Singaporean accent!
And I legit thought to myself, "built or make new sand, Singapore style", when the narrator said about the shortage of sand. Yeah, no surprises there, they did that too!!!

Aa a rapidly growing city state, you need to be at least few steps ahead of all issues pertaining to a global city of tomorrow, many needs and problems alongside future expansion due to fast economic and population growth is bound to appear sooner, it is one of those unavoidable megaprojects the state need to take on in light of its development. 🤓

You don't want to be there , really. You can't bring in chewing gums even. It's a FINE city. You'll get fined if you spit in public. You'll be bored to death. Life in Singapore is like a colony of ants in an anthill surrounded by a body of water. Life is just about work, and almost no play. Yes everything is there, shopping centres and everything, but you need to hold a good job in order to earn good money, an above average income, which equate to a 'happy' life. If not you'll be bunking in an ordinary pigeon style pigeon hole style flat dwellings which endlessly dotted the hinterlands of the island. Housing and car ownership are very dear, yes use the crowded public transport, if you can stand the BO of strangers. No thanks mate. Yes, never get sick in Singapore. Non citizens are barred from getting treated in public hospitals.

Nope, non citizens or permanent residents can be treated at the vast network of public hospitals and polyclinics. And if you are seeking medical help in Singapore for her wonderful healthcare system, you can. Subsidies are available to locals and permanent residents.
Nope, having or not having gums shouldn’t hinder your good life. Why should we be like our neighbours with chewed gums all over the place, sticking on your shoes, the bus or MRT seats, under the tables and all unexpected places. And it’s most unhygienic.
Yes, for all crimes and petty crimes there will be a price to pay. Isn’t that how life should be? Or they should go unpunished or bribed to get away like our neighbours? We love our laws, we get the safety and order our neighbours yearn to have.
It’s a mix of urban and rural setting for us in Singapore. Greenery takes up 40% of the land mass and the Govt takes effort to maintain the ratio.
We love our fantastic transport system, most efficient in the world and a gem to behold, at the envy of our poor neighbours…

For citizens your life savings CPF or your children's CPF money will be used for your treatment in hospital. Wouldn't it be nice if this rich state subsidise all it's citizen hospital bills, and introduce the dole system for the unemployed and provide pensions for senior citizens instead of using their savings for major operations and other health bills ? Many homeless people still pitch camps and and living it rough at Changi Beach, or there's no more Changi Beach, due to the land reclamations....???🤔🤣

Sharp edged aggregate should result in stronger concrete. The aggregates resist shear I'm guessing.
This applies directly to asphalt where smooth rock will result in roads that constantly shift. Sharp rocks keep everything locked in place.

Those shafts are going to make great surge tanks for storm drainage as well. These infrastructure works are going to be key tasks to ensure Singapore can endure thru even more centuries. How the country take care of its sewerage, landfill, recycle water speak volume. There is still a lot to do in the recycle, reuse, repurpose & upcycle industry: recycling clothing, 1 time use plastic, medical waste, used cooking oil, etc.

hmm now with 'New Sand', I'm guessing SG will probably let other countries send their trash to us, and we will create more concrete and continue to grow and have more fun and interesting projects
They could even ask other countries to pay them to relieve other countries of their trash.

Space limitations create wise use...speed refines technique...always enjoy the challenge of limitations to become more creative...
New sands is a very interesting option in as much as it’s much durable and does make for a sustainable waste disposal method that’s recycled.
The question is how to handle deconstruction and recycling of this new concrete. It could be a new source for microplastic leaking in the environment.

Probability of that happening is close to ZERO. Biggest factor in Singapore's progress is its highly educated population who are also forward thinking.
It is very difficult for the Philippine reach this kind massive project due to corruption in the government. From the department who is known for its worst corrupt officials and local government officials hungry for money. Another are lack of advance technical engineering knowledge for our engineers.

even Burj Khalifa was built not with their own sand, but by sand exported from China, the Singapore's discovery of soot as a new sand is an amazing tools for us to build skyscrapers that will reach the clouds

Projects of this size are just completely unrelatable to me. It's hard for me to comprehend even theoretically, let alone practically.
I know what you mean. Going from a plan to a finished, tangible structure on a massive scale where once there was nothing, with all the sub-elements, electrical, plumbing, etc, all in place always wows me. The civil engineering is amazing.
