According to Naoki Yoshida (FF16 Producer), the reason the protagonist is Ifrit, is because he was tired of seeing Ifrit get his ass whooped in several games of the franchise lol But Bahamut and Odin transcend the other Eikons in what they control. All other Eikons are elemental based: Fire, Ice, Earth, Lightning... Bahamut and Odin control Light and Darkness.
Ultima was a weak villian - exactly who was he or she? how many eikons did he consumed and why we didn't get to see more of Odin's victory throughout the game
I watched it in Japanese language with English subtitle in other channel. I was surprised it have different interpretation. The only caveat is, I might be wrong For Ultima, It has a nemesis addressed as "Logos" hidden in Ultima's chosen vessel, Clive. Logos outpowered Ultima. The Japanese script avoid cliché words, which further helps me comprehend Logos as the definition of "it is what it is, let human do what they want bruhh" to Ultima. Odin's dominant is a human, another chosen vessel by Ultima but beaten by Clive because Ultima is just an "entity"? Or "being"? Same goes with Logos, except that Ultima is too greedy It only copies "forms" for the ~neEEeeWw wo0Orld~. Clive, on the other hand, has himself as a complete vessel, an Eikon and Logos with him. At the end, Ultima may be a force at same time just a "nothing", Logos on the other hand, has human that interconnected with another human that creates a really massive vessel on accidental: "i told you, let them live, you forced me into this, this is the Law, if a human has strong willpower, it is the Law's command for me to be in it if they were endangered. Bla bla bla I know world is going to die whatsoever but that's not our duty, that's the Law's call. Now shut up". Ultima, the creator of humanity who sees them as little more than tools is an affront to Clive and Cid’s dream, an enemy that takes the notion of forced servitude to its natural extreme: a god who sees his creations as playthings and tools, all the while not even acknowledging their suffering, even among those who’d revere him. Sure on a surface level, he’s just another arrogant, selfish god in a jrpg, but it’s the concept the game has built up since the start and why that clashes with Ultima is why his opposition to Clive’s vision is necessary.
I'd just like to point out, Bahamut seems to be the only entity that was capable of straight up stopping Odin's slice with his claws. Odin's sword is capable of cutting anything, as demonstrated. Near Endgame spoilers below: He literally cut Clive out of Ifrit during their fight (Or "killed" Ifrit and severed Clive's connection to it temporarily, depending on interpretation), but here Bahamut straight caught the sword with no ill effects whatsoever.
Spoilers... Counterpoint, Barnabas was already deep in bed with Ultima, so killing Bahamut or the Sanbreque here would ruin the plan of having Clive absorb the other Eikons. It's likely Odin is holding back majorly here, enough to force a stalemate and ensure Bahamut gets his future encounter with Ifrit.
I believe Bahamut caught the blade before Odin could cast his Zentensuken. You see moments later, he actually dodges the next attack and doesn't try to catch it. Either way, impress degree of skill to fly around as a dragon and catch a blade before it swings.
Id rather say its more akin to Naruto than AOT. Giant beings of pure magic/Chakra that are passed down to another host so their nation can use them as weapons. With the main bad villain wanting to combine all of them into one being to achieve a goal that requires unrivaled power. And the main villain has a vendetta against humanity, believing catastrophe and destruction are byproducts of human free will.
When I first saw this it was like, "sure another game with ok big flashy fight, whatever". Its like so out od context that was meaningless for me. But then, hours into the game getting to know the world of the game the conflicts, and this characters, Dion and Barnabas, this hits totally different.
In the event that something happens while he's on the battlefield, and he ends up dropping out of his eikon form (whether by defeat or any other reason), he's a dragoon and spears are their signature weapons. He didn't end up needing it, but any capable strategist is smart enough to have a backup plan.
the eikons are essentially nukes. if they send theirs, you need to send yours or you'll be destroyed. but fight too long, and it may end in mutually assured destruction of all.

The point was to rouse the army morale on both sides. A legitimate fight is too draining and too costly. Both Dion and Barnabus are too strategic for that.
