With the prices of the mk1 s3 quickly increasing, now would be a great time to take the plunge on buying an audi s3.
It has the infamous 1.8T engine, which can produce a lot of power for not much money, partnering with the haldex quattro the mk1 S3 is equipped with, it makes it an absolute animal that will eat almost anything on the road.

My friend had a 2002 mk1 Leon cupra r (same engine) few years ago. He had it for 3 years running stage 2 with no issues
Had my Nogaro Blue 2002 in 2011, only mods were an exhaust & stage 1 (260bhp) & lowering springs. Paid 5k for it from a garage & sold it in 2018 with 98k miles for 3.6k.
This one was sick. I like the power band and stealth
My S3 decided it wanted to be a 3 cylinder recently.

@@lucasaraya5347 Its been almost another year and it still identifies as a 3 cylinder. I've finally got a new head for it so it will soon identify as a 4 cylinder again. I'm getting sick of not being able to drive it.
Same with my 1.8T Audi TT xD, now getting repaired and rebuild stronger by me.

i took a massive but different plunge, sold my mk4 and bought the cheapest r33 gtst that runs and drives, dream car so smiles no matter what condition its in but man i miss my 1.8t, will get another mk4 as a fun project in the future if theyre still cheap enough

Yes I just bought a 2002 1.8t quattro last week and it is my first AWD and what a difference it makes to absolutely puts the power to tthe floor and you feel so. Safe doing it to no jokes it's an amazing car with plenty of overtaking power in her , obviously have to get use to not being able to throw the back end around like rwd but the way it puts the piwer down and holds the road while doing it mqkes all the difference and makes it so much more fun to drive especially on long bendy roads

I’m from Brazil, here it’s hard to find S3 old model.. So I bought one A3 1997 1.8T, it has 280 whp. Sometimes I need to fix somethings but I love the car!

Can fully vouch for the unreliability, wouldn’t change it for the world though, worth every second of stress 😂
Got one a few months ago, very unreliable to buy one right now, it cost me a substancial amount to repair everything, Its not the sort of car people look after, but it will be in the future. will 100% murder anything on a stoplight if you upgrade your turbo and do a remap and even stock will catch a lot of people offguard due to how light it is.

Just bought an S3 Mk1. It will be interesting to see how the prices will develope coming years....However my S3 was in quite good condition, nice service history and very well equipped model with the 1,8T BAM engine

Bought my A3 1.8t quattro ARY in January. Coming from a MK1 focus 1.6, it took time to adjust to the power delivery. But the smile never ends when you give it some, especially with the DV noise. Looking forward to going stage 2 soon!
All I have to say is, make sure you are ready to begin your money pit.
Fucking amazing engines to modify but it seriously becomes problematic when you begin mods lmao.

Bought mine this month. Going to cost some money for stage 2 but I'm sure it's worth it. Mine's ARX for some reason, impossible to find any turbo parts.
I had facelift 8L S3 and I loved every second with it. It had upgraded exhaust, stage1 tune, short shifter and lowering springs. Maybe not the fastest car, but really great to drive in every way.
At some point the car had some idling problems, and now I don't remember what was fixed to make the problem go away.🤔

any audi prior 2012 is a gem & price is going up..... i have the 3.2 a3 so didnt see the need to upgrade to s3 but i do want s4 + a3 soon
naw they are dirty cheap like 1-3k euro. Now something like a S2 in a decent condition, now thats a fckin gem.

Had never even one problem with my S3, and I had it for a while and was driving it pretty rough. It was build pretty well and the owner before and I were driving it like you should and maintain it like you should.
What;s the mileage on it?
I was considering buying one, but the ones I found are around 200.000kms and I don't know what to say about the reliability at this mileage..
@@eduardul133 depends, mine had about 240.000km but it was always maintained how you should do it, the parts were always premium parts and the programming was from one of the best programmers here in Germany for that type of engine. I was driving some S3s with much less KM and they were awful.
If you’re gonna buy one just look at how it drives, if it feels smooth and high quality it’s gonna be good, don’t look too much on the KM

I got a modded golf 4 GTI and i wont ever sell it again. just love the engine, produces a lot of power. better get a engine revision then sell it
I just totaled my mk4 gti :/ it was awp swapped running a f21 turbo 440cc @ 3bar 3”catless exhaust straight back with full supporting mods for the uni stage 2+ tune. It was pushing 22psi. Tune is rated right at 270hp/300ft-lb. complete emissions delete. Thing was quick I loved that car. I’m planning on salvaging the engine building a 2.0 stroker w/gti3076r kit with all the supporting mods and dropping it into a mk1 Audi TT 225. I’m aiming for 550 bulletproof hp. I was gonna get another gti donor but for almost the same price I can have me a TT with haldex. The 1.8 is definitely a very solid engine. Seems like a lot of people are starting to get back into them they still very relevant.

Damn, thats alot of issues. I had two S3‘s and not nearly that many issues. My major were on the first one, diff broke. Second one, after 2 days, cylinder broke. Other than that, great car.

The mk1 A3/S3 is a great car.
I drive a 1999 A3 with a naturaly asperated 1.6 4 Zylinder that does 101 hp. It's a great car, it drives lovely. It's just a little boring sometimes due to the lack of Power.
Solution.. drop in a 1.8T lol You wont look back ;)

1. Money
2. I don't have the knowlege to swap an engine.
@@FusionRain8600 then sell yours and buy an 1.8t shouldn't be that much of a difference if you go for the BAM motorcode (150ps not the 180) they can hold a good amount of power reliable =)

Aint it funny how much of a love hate relationship you get with this motor.. i really love driving it, I mean really love but hate the price of parts.. and the parts list so far has far out weighed the enjoyment factor by a mile... its been endless!.. yeah I bought a survive of abuse 😔 can't wait to get it back on the road.

I got mk1 octavia 4x4 which is basically the same car just bigger. Got to say im having those exact issues but i love it
but those have in basis 164kw, octavia had max 132 kw engine,, and there is big diference.
@@dzusoxD mine has ko4 with the APX block which had 225hp standard. Even with stock components on safe map you can achieve around 220 hp

If not doing the work yourself get one that's had all the niggles taken care of. Or have a budget alongside your purchase price for repairs. All the stuff mentioned (apart from the electrics) is general maintenance of consumables. Enthusiast owned examples are the ones to go for. Too many twats buy performance cars of similar age, get rid after refusing to pay for the upkeep and then have the cheek to jump on forums/social media and slag the entire model range off. These feel fast as they are light and quick off the mark but despite being generally kept under 300hp by most owners after mods they are great fun to drive and there are many good examples still available out there.

Hey do you remember how did you fix the turbo flutter that you had in the 1.8t golf. I tried going back in the older videos but I didn't manage to find where exactly it got fixed. Cheers mate!
It never stopped, still does it now with the new owner! Changed to the flutter when the intercooler pipes got upgraded

I have a mk1 audi a3 1.8t
It has a audi tt upper engine with a tt pistons.... alot of stuff but i have an issue with handling the car
I prefer the MK1 Leon over this. had mk4 gti and switched it for mk1 leon.

I used to own a mk1 A3, one of the earlier ones. That car had probably the worst headlights I've ever seen in a car. At night, it was scary to drive, even with great condition lights - they weren't faded or anything. Just horrible at their job. I tried some bright bulbs, but still nowhere near decent. So I'd say, if you need to drive a lot in the dark in these cars, get yourself a light bar, ASAP. And quality bulbs, even though those won't do anything major.
B7 A4's bi-xenons were basically like the sun itself, holy fuck. The amount of light and the pattern itself was excellent for a car that didn't have any light bars or anything added to it.
My 8L S3 just shit a headlight, stealer quoted $2.5k lol

i almost bought one for 7700 euro but for 6000 euro less i have bought a a4 b5 1.8 20vt with 55.000 km less on the clock got it chiptuned to 200hp and im driving a year now without any big problems only normal small things like thermostat. i think you can better buy a less wanted version of the 1.8t than the s3 then you can buy a much better car for your money
Yes i habe one too its so great and they arent so heavy as u think. But on mine there is always something new to replace🤷🏼♂️at least the parts are cheap
is it a fact that all VW's have a strong 2nd and 4th gear ? cuz mine also feels that way and it s a 2.0 tdi
Never thought about it, but I have a 1.8T Seat Toledo and yeah 2nd, 3rd and 4th are strong, but specially 2nd and 4th are outstanding. 2nd gear you feel like a Ferrari, while 4th brings you insane versatility, you can drive anywhere from 60kmh (35 mph) to 180kmh (110kph) insane.
This is the only car for me I’d buy in Silver only.
The 8L had woeful service intervals & that's why I personally prefer the 8P. Of you can find an L with honest, regular oil changes then, grab it imho ;)

My baby. Mine is sat in the corner of my garden with a purpose built shelter and the engine tucked away nicely under my stairs. Stage 2 revo. 20mm lowered ebach springs short shifter. I miss driving mine 😭 but not till my kids are a bit older. will it get back on the road

Got mine about 3 months ago again with 109k but for £2400, apparently had power loss but i knew the N75 valves on these are known to go and what do you know lol.
