Owned a rebuilt 98 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP and basically installed the SLP stage 3. Exhaust, ram air, smaller pulley, new nose drive, fuel pump and MSD ignition. Best Dyno was at 287hp crank. Lots of fun to drive until the engine caught fire.

The 3800 is truly a solid engine. Especially the supercharged one, I truly wish that GM still made it. They're practically near goddam bulletproof and probably the only good American made V6 ever made, these V6's can last upwards of 300k miles with very little issues. I wish they still had a variant of it, maybe updated with dohc and vvt- that would be a beast of an engine. GM kept the 5300 why couldn't they keep the beloved 3800.
My parents owned a Grand Prix GTP with the Supercharged 3800 and later I bought a Buick Regal GS as my daily I owned a GTO also. The 3800 is one of best motors GM ever made.
A friend of mine had a supercharged one back in 2006 with a few mods, we would take the passenger headlight out for full race mode, go troll civics in Longmont Colorado. Was a lot of fun that thing would smoke off the front tires!
Friend’s dad had bought a 2003 GSX (he had the First gen GSX muscle car after high school and had 2 GNs, his 86 getting stolen, and still had the ‘87 GN) and they fucking screwed for a Buick FWD or any FWD sedan. 300 Hp may not seem like a lot, today, but then along with the 320+ lbs/ft, was a big deal. The only performance-sapping issue, was the insanely tall geared 4 spd auto. It did have the limited slip, but good god- it could go from 50 to 100 in only second gear. He DID take it to a “run what ya brung” at the drags and on a hot, humid evening- managed a low 14 second pass. A better, even slightly-shorter-geared transmission and he probably could’ve tagged a high 13.
Excellent vid! A friend, who's maybe 100lbs soaking wet, got a GNX for graduation. Neither her nor her parents knew what they'd gotten her!!! She drove it like an economy car. This sounds like the same engine that was in Pontiac's 300 GPX concept that was drop dead. What's really heartbreaking is that Buick was looking to return to RWD in the 80s and converted a Regal coupe, sedan, and Reatta into RWD GN series to show how easy it could be done. They had both super or turbo charged 3.8s. Of course, GM said no. 😡😡😡🤬🤬🤬
GSX you could order & Ed Hamburger's (yes, the Mopar drag racer from the '70's) group did do the work- dealers did do the conversions as well, but SLP did convert them as well. I have the '99 PGA/Sea Fair Regal promo car, had worked on a research project at SMCO in '99 and bought it (with friendly help from the folks in Saginaw). Still have it, it has the fiberglass rear spoiler (SoCal Customs Mick Jones did the original), has an LSD in the GM Performance transaxle, intercooled, full exhaust-stainless headers to duals, Cadillac parts-bin rotor swap, 9C1 suspension with adjustable struts, a matching rear strut tower brace, and it's still pretty quick
I had a 2002 Grand Sport back in 2017... For about a year and in that time I found that though the supercharged engine was exhilarating, it sucked gas like no tomorrow once you tapped into the supercharger and the supercharger is not always online the engine is very underpowered until you press the pedal far enough to "turn on". the supercharger and I found that annoying in daily driving as I don't want to always drive at 9/10ths to enjoy the power that the engine can deliver ...so all the engines power always felt like an on-off switch (which was admittedly purposely engineered into it by GM for fuel economy)and I found that the better motor all around was really the naturally aspirated version for daily use and enjoyability
I actually like the concept better! Also crazy how cheap it went at auction. Not sure why people would hate a concept car. I'd rather own something that the public never could get vs something that was available to the public.
What a horrific time for mid grade cars. At least we still had the F-bodies back then. Meanwhile in Australia they were making awesome front engine rear drive sedans and wagons still. Now sadly those are gone too.
I drove a lot of off lease GS’s when I worked at a dealership. They were quick cars for the day, and you can get them over 300hp with some work. Their Achilles heel though was the transmissions. They could barely hold up to the stock power of the engines
I had a 01 Regal LS And I miss it. And I wish I could get anther one too. Id buy one just because of that sweet sweet 3800. It made 205HP The only reason I don't have my favorite car, (The Regal) Because my transmission went out.
No the regals only made 205 hp with the 3.8. The regal gs made 240 with the l67. The Grand Prix and Camaro are the only cars with the 3.8 that made more then 205
1:48, me totally not sitting on my lunch in my 1997 Taurus SHO flipping off the screen lol (i now want to find one of these, i forgot them and now i gotta have it)
I've owned a 01 GS. They have a lot of little quirks (coolant elbows!) that you have to work out, but they're a fun car to own. And who can be mad at supercharger whine?
I knew a guy in the mid 00s with a Regal GS, oh lord. So this was the height of Fast & Furious and that god awful late 90s/early 00s aftermarket style as you pointed out. I can't remember all of the weird shit he had on it but I know it had ugly wheels, a weird tribal graphic, and one of those race wings among other stuff. He won a lot of trophies on the car show circuit, not sure if that was a classing thing or what. An actual friend of mine still has a 00 Grand Prix GTP he takes out on weekends, she's got some rust & a busted overdrive gear but she's still kickin. I think it even has some mild SLP parts on it. I think if they put this GNX concept into production as a limited release it would have sold fairly well. Well I guess that depends on their marketing department. It looks pretty sharp for what it is, and it's competitive with other models available at the time in 2000. They let the stupid Monte Carlo go with a free ride for way longer that it was welcome... Heh, I had a different friend back in high school who bought a 70 GSX. We called it the rotten banana, it was rough. No idea if he kept it or not, lost contact with him a good 20 years ago. He always had cool cars though, like a Merkur for a little while.
Can you make series about all toyota sedan in 90s with 1jz and 2jz or an episode for each one of them like crowns and jzx and chaser. Much love from iraq
Yeah… if only we could get them here in the U.S. We finally got a Holden Monoco rebadge as the Pontiac GTO in 2004 and a rebadged Holden Commodore as the Pontiac G8 in 2008. Both of them had the 6.0 liter V-8. Unfortunately they were considered overpriced because of the exchange rate at the time, but great cars nonetheless. Cheers!
The best years I know for the GP GTP were the 99's, not the 98's. I assume that goes for all models with this engine/tranny combo, same exact car underneath, just differing bodies. That year had the most factory freaks, usually when they dyno'ed higher then spec, the 99's, more than other years, did it more frequently.
Those were badass!!💯I also like the lacrosse w/5.3 V8 I'm pretty sure those are pushing 300hp,I drove one when I worked at auto auction part time weekends, they paid cash 💸 it was only a few hrs Saturdays and Sundays,easiest/funnest jobs ever!!!I would basically pick them up at spot, pull up to podium, waited til the gavel slammed and drove off down this 1/4 mile stretch and park it in designated spot and I opened up every vehicle I drove down that stretch 🤣🤣🤣even though they told us not to!!those V8 buick lacrosse were fuckin pretty quick!!💯great vid btw

What's really heartbreaking is that Buick was looking to return to RWD in the 80s and converted a Regal coupe, sedan, and Reatta into RWD GN series to show how easy it could be done. They had both super or turbo charged 3.8s. Of course, GM said no. 😡😡😡🤬🤬🤬
Great Episode!😎👍🏽👍🏽
Amazing vids!! You should do a video on sport trucks, yk like the gmc cyclones and typhoons. That kinda era
I have made videos out performance trucks! They are older and aren’t as good though😂
@@GreenHawkDrive oh haha Alr I'll go looking for it 🤣
I had a 2001 GP GTP with the supercharger. That motor was underrated! That thing cooked strait from the factory. I actually miss that car.
They look great too!
Another underrated one is the 2012 Buick Regal GS in manual 6 speed. I had one great car.
I agree!
Those rims are actually super nice
that red Lexus gs300 is clean though!!!
Never knew about these cars, thanks for the video.
Wow. That's really cool man. My email is in the description, I'd love to see pictures!
@@GreenHawkDrive it's in the paint shop right now in Monroe, Washington. But definitely!
Old hood rich car. Friend had one on 160 spoke gold Dayton's. Bad little whip.
the older gnx is honestly is a sweet looking car for it's time and very fast
I knew a lady who had a Pontiac GXP; it looked like it handled well because it was so wide and low, I didn’t know about the predecessor
I had a 97 GTP, did a ZZP PCM, 3.6 pulley, and a 3” downpipe. Car was doing mid 5s for 0-60
That’s awesome! I’ve always liked the look of those
Another cool vid bro, I'm not a fan of fwd but, that slp stage 3 is a good looking car 👍
Nice Nice Buick GS Sedan Supercharged Bring it Back 😮😮😮😮😮😮❤❤❤❤
I drove a lot of off lease GS’s when I worked at a dealership.
The Grand Prix and Camaro are the only cars with the 3.8 that made more then 205
@@yyeezyy630 I got my numbers wrong Sorry
Somehow I didn't know this car existed
Great vid Hawk! Drove several supercharged 3800 models in the past. They were pretty cool....Not Grand National cool though LOL.
Which models and of them what was your favorite?
@@GreenHawkDrive Prob the Bonneville SSEi, but even a Buick Park Avenue Ultra had its charms.
@@autochatter Oh man, I love the SSEi. The seats in those bad boys look insanely comfortable!
@@GreenHawkDrive They were. The firmer, sportier ride was a plus for me, but none of these were sports cars LOL.
@@autochatter They never were intended to be.
I hope someone takes care of the concept GNX GSX cars and show them sometimes
Great video and a painful reminder that this was the end of an era. An era when GM, at least, tried to be relevant.
Thanks man and yeah😂
1:48, me totally not sitting on my lunch in my 1997 Taurus SHO flipping off the screen lol (i now want to find one of these, i forgot them and now i gotta have it)
I've seen one in my hometown, literally thought it was just a GS modified by the owner!
Great video!
Thank you!
I've owned a 01 GS. They have a lot of little quirks (coolant elbows!) that you have to work out, but they're a fun car to own. And who can be mad at supercharger whine?
I actually like the concept and would drive it although I agree, the standard dual exhaust is better looking than the three odd ball center pipes.
What?! GNX 2000?! I’m so embarrassed I had no idea that it existed.
Just put "concept" in the title
Just grow up
@@greengabe5 Just stop dickiding
I sold these for a Buick dealer- no one wanted them because it was FWD, end of story.
Interesting. So you didn't sell any cars because "no one wanted them because they were fwd"? So tell me what Buick from the early 2000s were rwd?
@@RC51Legend None. The Century sold because it was cheap and on sale. This piece of crap wasn't.
Funny how GM still went and made the Monte Carlo and Impala SS. Which didn't sell.
The rotten banana is a great name
Cool car, cool video.
Thanks!
I would love to have the gnx and whatnot from the 2000s
I've always wanted to take a super charged 3800 and put it into an S10 that had the 4 cylinder. It has the same bolt pattern.
These thing were pretty sick with BBS wheels and a lot of power. But they didn't make a lot of them.
damn the new album experimental
If they had adapted the all-wheel drive system that could have been really wold beaters
Great video. However, there was a 4-door Buick Regal sedan starting in 1991.
You’re right! Thanks for the catch.
I had a 1998 Pontiac Bonneville with the supercharged 3800. I think it had 240 or 260 HP/
Can you make series about all toyota sedan in 90s with 1jz and 2jz or an episode for each one of them like crowns and jzx and chaser. Much love from iraq
Thank you for the suggestion. I'm still trying to incorporate the other markets as well so it may be awhile!
God if they made the gmx bro. The 3800 is an absolute animal.
The 86 joint wasn’t that bad actually!! My buddy had one!😎👍🏽
Interesting GNX but i stick to Holden VS series 3 Calais RWD with supercharged 3800 V6, my uncle had one, it bloody fast. HSV XU6 version on GNX.
Cheers!
@@Primus54 USA really miss HSV sedans with LSA V8 n Maloo ute. The two GTO n SS should been HSV versions.
Sounds like an amazing job. As for those V8 Lacrosse, those are very unique cars man, very underrated. Glad you liked the video:)
Wow its a beautiful car. This is what frustrates me so much about these manufacturers. They can make prototypes that look great but always end up protecting the boring-as-all-hell versions instead.
Ive seen the last official Oldsmobile 442... it was an Oldsmobile Intrigue 442
I plan on making a video on that in the future!
@@GreenHawkDrive it was at the mecum kissimmee auction, it has a v8.
My dad had a bustle back century with the 301 v8 (4.9l) in the early 80s, it was a slug
The styling looks modern even today .
