  • Formula 1 Technology on a Club Level Budget! Andrew Brilliant from AMB Aero takes us through an in-depth interview on how you can improve your car's performance potentially from as little as the cost of a set of race tyres dispelling the long-held belief that only the highest levels of motorsport could afford such modifications that cater to not only the teams goals but also the drivers level of ability.
    With World Time Attack Challenge lap times being reduced by almost as much as 10 seconds since the introduction of aero packages it is easy to see why it is playing a bigger and bigger role in the neverending quest for performance. Also discussed are some of the ways you can become an aerodynamicist, the importance of having any data, no matter how basic it is and data validation in relation to CFD and wind tunnel analysis.

    I was fortunate enough to work at rahal Letterman racing right out of school as basically the shop bitch lol but I was so fascinated with the scale model they used for wind tunnel testing...that was just so interesting to me ... I was pretty much a minimally paid intern but I loved it and learned so much from people who were absolutely the smartest people I've ever been around but seeing what they were able to get with the smallest adjustment made to a wing or a tiny body panel and it would have huge changes in the tunnel... that just blew my 19 year old mind that like 0.25 of a degree in the angle of the wing or splinters etc. Would do so much.... but I didn't get to spend a whole lot of time in that area i was mainly working with the chassis fabrication team who i also learned a priceless base of knowledge from... sorry for the rambling but this man reminded me of the people I worked with there.... cool stuff

    Why not attach the wing struts directly to the wheel hubs? Easier on an open wheel layout but it is illegal mostly.

    What 3d packages are suitable for aero CFD? Would Autodesk's Maya's fluid solver or a similar film industry visual effects package be useable at all for this? Visual effects software isn't cheap but I imagine a lot cheaper than CFD software specifically written for more specialized industries like mining or medical applications

      @ASJC27 6 років тому

      Ansys Fluent and CD-Adapco Star-CCM+ are the most common commercial packages. OpenFoam is a great open source package. Personally Star-CCM+ is my favorite however commercial software is jaw-droppingly expensive.

      Thank you for your insight both of you. Are you aware of any online resources or courses how to setup CFDs to opmize aero (reduce drag or increase downforce)? I have an S2000 with no aero and would love to use CFD at some point in the future if I ever convert it to a race car. Appreciate any input or links you may have.

    I've heard of a team using airride (sort of) suspension in a time attack series, would the adjustability of such a system outweigh its overall lesser performance compared to a more conventional suspension setup?

    for any aero package, the first 90% of its benefits can be designed with the eyes. In general, if something looks aero, then it is aero. There is no need for a windtunnel or even a computer for this 90%. But reap the remaining 10% benefits, then this is where computer, engineers, and windtunnel come into play, this is where the major cost of R&D is. If you're an F1 team, then sure go after that 10%. For the club racers, you can get by without F1 budget.
    As for the order importance, it's 1) aero, 2) suspension, and 3) engine, in decreasing order of importance.

    • @hpa101
      @hpa101  5 років тому +3

      No matter the budget if you want to get some benefits or even get remotely close to 90% you do need to spend some time making sure you're on the right track. An incorrect setup that has just been eyeball setup without any consideration for your power levels could actually make you slower, so it's hard to put a rank on everything like that as it all links together - Taz.

    • @vaaro_m
      @vaaro_m 3 місяці тому

      Youre forgetting a huge factor when it comes to aero. The impact aero has on suspension, just how they talked about. Sure you can eyeball the DESIGN of aero, but you wouldnt know exactly how much lbs of downforce its making front and rear just by “eyeballing” it. So you’ll be in a huge disadvantage figuring out your suspension setup with spring rates and fine tuning them

    its pretty "arrogant" to think one principle is more important than the next. Power, grip, reliability and downforce all need to work in harmony to make the lap time come down. So just as easy as you can say 1000hp+ is useless with aero, aero is useless without the power to sustain that downforce, and power and aero is useless if you don't have the tires to sustain the g-force limits. So is Aero really the cheapest mod? absolutely not. Tires are, without grip, you aren't getting around a corner. Just look at F1. The end all be all to lap times is getting the tires to work.

    • @hpa101
      @hpa101  5 років тому +2

      I think you're reading a little too much into the title, and note there are class rules for time attack that won't see cars like this running slicks like F1, and with that in mind if you are losing time/grip due to a limited range of tyres to select from you're going to have to work on picking up in other areas....such as aero ;)
      Also note with a 1000HP build, one would hope the team does have the basics covered when it comes to tyres and we're not ignorant of such things. You might enjoy this video for examples: ua-cam.com/video/Oc6QQVDx2Io/v-deo.html - Taz.

    • @Themayseffect
      @Themayseffect 5 років тому

      I think you are reading a little bit too much into my last sentences. And ignorant was not the right word in this situation, you guys have given a ton of good info over the years. "Arrogant" the statement and the discussion is none the less. Even with a regulated tire choice for your class (just like it is in F1) you still have to get those tires to work as good as the next guy. so the situation is still the same. Slicks or not, you are given a baseline to the rest of the competition. If you can't get those tires to work better than the next person, then you lose time. Downforce is still but a portion of the entire conversation. Aero means nothing if you can't translate it to traction, and traction means nothing if you're car isn't fast enough (power) in the first place. So again, all things need to work in harmony.Thanks for the clip, I watched that previously :). Good info.

    • @hpa101
      @hpa101  5 років тому +1

      Considering the topic of the conversation is on aerodynamics, and we're talking an accomplished aerodynamicist, every other factor that comes into play is not going to be discussed as the focus is aero. I don't think that makes anyone arrogant to zero in on this regardless of the other factors. Just because every single topic relating to getting a car around the track is not discussed in one sitting doesn't mean it's unknown or ignored 😜
      Glad you're enjoying the content and cheers for getting involved with your comments too. Andre and the team made it to Goodwood this year for you guys so keep an eye out for that footage to start hitting the ground in the next few weeks, it will be very varied due to the variety of vehicles there too - Taz.
