When you want to produce 2000HP from a turbocharged 4 cylinder engine it is logical that you’re going to lean heavily on your turbo setup. Shane Tecklenburg, the Mazworkz Racing Engines and Tekno Toyz team reached this goal with their MoTeC controlled 88mm turbo setup some time ago, but when reaching for 3000HP it was evident a single was not going to cut it.
Shane and Andre explain some of the cooling and packaging issues around large single turbo setups before explaining how the current 380 PSI capable compound system consisting of 2 large turbochargers, which technically due to pressure ratios operate at around 30 PSI a piece, are feeding one smaller turbo which combined enables them to push past those 2000HP limits and reach higher power outputs.
Also discussed are the advantages and disadvantages of intercooling while running methanol fuel and the decision process around it as well as how you control boost in a compound turbo setup and the parameters that must be considered to ensure the boost is kept at the target levels.
Lastly, Shane shares his goal of hitting 5 seconds with this 4 cylinder SR20 based engine in the race with Jett Racing to be the first to do so.

Itd be nice ta see the motor behind n show us while explaining.. Doin it that way would be a tad more interesting..
@@briankirsch5859 yes we agree. We focus on getting a great interview and if time allows we then get other footage for b-roll, but PRI was so flat out for us this year b-roll wasn't on the cards sorry - Taz.
@@hpa101 don't apologise, the interview is awesome anyway! Here's Shane's channel ua-cam.com/users/TunedbyShaneT
So if it literally has 150 psi of air going into that motor how much fuel pressure does that require??? Dammm
HPA it's a shame you had a douch bag in the background with poor body language with folded arms thinking he is some one special.
Man... it's very underrated the knowledge that Andre has, and the questions he asks the interviewers! It's such a pleasure to watch & learn something from his insight and perspective... and the humbleness of both Shane T. and Andre makes digesting complicated science easy for the layman without a degree to grasp the concept. Thank you HPA for another stellar interview... definitely one for the archives!!
Thanks Dennis! Both Andre and Shane certainly have that natural knack of explaining things in a way almost anyone can understand =) - Taz.
@W J Exactly... or the questions they ask.. the interviewer answers with a reply that has nothing to do with the question asked. I just love the humbleness of both guys... no arrogance.. and no BS!
@@ACommenterOnUA-cam hellyeah bro thanks for mentioning the batteries principles.
Makes it much much MUCH easier to take in and understand with an easier platform 9
Dennis melville knowledge? Its the creative genius and ability to see the opportunity and area for improvement created by a negative result.
You don’t need a degree to understand this stuff lol
"The dimension between the valve cover and the oil pan would for sure get longer" is the best way I've ever heard "engine go boom" worded.
IAT's 5 degrees above ambient is probably the most impressive thing in my mind. The engineering involved in those charge coolers is incredible. Think about how long the intercooler actually has to cool the air that is rushing past it, literally fractions of a second.
Physics/thermodynamics ftw baby!
don't forget that they're using ice water to cool the air, not ambient temperature air
@@Technoflicks thanks
Dry ice and Isopropyl alcohol = -77°C or -106.6°F
Ice and water = 0°C
Ice + salt and water = -21°C
Soon people will be running charge coolers with liquid nitrogen. "What are your IATs? About minus 180 C... o.O"
We ARE going to make 3000hp. We WILL THEN figure out how to USE it.
Shane T is always one of the top interviewees. Top knowledge and he really explains things in a way that everyone can understand
Yes an Andre is well knowledgeable of what he's talking about, he's just being cool hiding it from us😵
Guy in the grey jumper at 4:49 was going through those gears like a 7 second pass
I reckon he was in the 6's - Taz.
Yeah, he was banging gears on his way by.
One of the few humans that says more than Andre during interviews :) These guys are a real treat to watch and learn from every time they speak. Another well done interview in the bag. Great work HPA
I'll second that!!!
Thirding this!!! SUCH AN INFORMATIVE INTERVIEW RIGHT HERE!!!!
I believe this guy is the best car interviewer I have seen on UA-cam.
3000hp 4 cylinder? Excuse me, What?! Imagine what guys like Shane can do with Formula 1 level budgets... Guys are sleeping out here.
Guys like Shane are the ones behind the old school Group B Rally Racing. :)
Formula 1 doesn't progress because it has a LOT of rules that basically put everyone at the same level of advantage, otherwise big companies would dump a bunch of cash into making cars with enormous advantages and smaller companies with less money would be in the shade.
@@TheFPSPower eh, small companies used to do fine. They used a lot of tricks to get around rules and what not with less money and they did fine. If it went back to that, we would see a lot more tech being developed though.
Running an engine for 10 seconds it not the same as completing a race circuit.
This has to be a v6 or a v8 for 3000.
The more knowledge you gain, the more questions you have, it's a never-ending process.

very inspiring !!
Shane-T is awesome! Andre asked maybe 5 questions, we got 20 minutes of very juicy information and Shane still wasn't done 🤣🤣🤣🤣
dariusc03 yeah man.i could listen to him all day 👍
I am French people and your videos help me learn English while listening to what excites me, just thank you❤️❤️
That's awesome! Glad you're enjoying the content and learning English. Just make sure you don't pick up our Kiwi accent aye haha. We caught up with Shane T again in November so you can expect that to come out in a few weeks as well =) - Taz.
High Performance Academy perfect i look forward to it
I read about compound turbos back in 2006 but never really put aside a budget to do a full build to make use of the silly numbers you can make; seeing it finally starting to gain ground makes me happy.
Diesels been doing it. Cool to see
These guys talking abouy 150psi and i'm here thinking if its worth keeping 22psi on my car...
haha I know the feeling! I loved Shanes description of what would happen to the engine if they put the full 380 PSI through it as well =D - Taz.
loool fun fact
Can't imagine the rods going out like shooting stars meme.
@@hpa101 questions how the hell the bolt hold engine able to hold the presure seems ist mystery and what kind of torque wrench they use use they need horse to torque that thing hahahaha
😂😂😂
I could listen to Shane talk for hours. The wealth of knowledge is unprecedented. 👊
Omg Shane's answers are so natural and knowledgeable. only seen two interviews with Shane T but I'm already a HUGE fan.
I will never get sick of this podcast. The knowledge and inspiration gained is un matched. It’s brings a greater appreciation to the people that do these jobs and keep the aftermarket alive. Thank you for doing what you do.
Thanks man! The team appreciates that and your time to listen and enjoy what they're doing here 😎 - Taz
Great video guys well done :)
Cheers! Always a pleasure and never a chore when it comes to having a chat with Shane T. Very interesting dude =D - Taz.
Shane T + Andre? Can't click fast enough. Always learn something from these guys.
Agreed..... you can tell the difference from people that love what they do in life... compared to selfish people that try to make a buck!
Diesel have been using compound turbo setup for ages, most stock semi truck diesel engines run upward of 65-80 psi and run 70.000lbs injectors , like he said nothing new really. But on a Gas engine its tricky to setup and get running properly. 3000 Hp on a small 4 cyl is damn impressive.
Its tricky to get the correct size turbos even on a diesel. Dudes have been doing it long enough that the maths are known much better in diesel applications.
RedmistAU well also diesels do not burn the same fuel and do not have have an ignition system. Diesels need compression to ignite the fuel , whereas gas engines to much compression is very bad for detonation unless your burning nitromethane.
I wanted to see the layout
Nissan navara run twin turbos and, correct me if I’m wrong (probable) they run sequentially, sort of parallel, small turbo at low revs changes to large turbo at high rpm
I think this set up is turbos that directly feed each other in series
Would have been great to see how the exhaust was plumbed
As you said!!!! Diesels making around 80psi is a totally different ball game to a 2 litre 4 cylinder gas engine!!! ..... diesels make boost a lot more easily !!! Due to their design !!
diesels are ridiculously simple compared to spark plugs where there is a hundred different areas trying to scatter the engine
Give this man all the time he needs. Shane and compound turbos are the most interesting things on your channel
Love getting to hear from someone who can explain the math behind the reasoning very clearly! Never understood how compounding worked mathematically - now it makes so much more sense! Also, 380 pounds of boost. JESUS.
13:08 .... My favourite part. This guy is still learning and trying things ... just on a massive scale. Great interviewee with all the informative answers, and great interviewer asking all the right questions. Top notch content.
Shane T one of the world's greatest tuner.🏁

DahkaShades i wonder if he has time for my ‘99 Honda Insight x) $$$
Both men very knowledgeable. a pleasure to listen to.
That just got me SO pumped. Shane T and Andre are so enthusiastic about learning and technology and they are so good for this industry. I'm proud to have a Mazworx built VE in my racecar:)
This is one of the best interviews I've ever seen. So much in depth explanation and specifics like air temp etc really awesome to be able to listen to and understand exactly what these guys are doing with their motors at these extreme levels. Love how Shane T doesn't try to hide anything at all.
Thanks Kevin! We love talking to Shane too. Knowledge bombs non-stop =) - Taz.
I think my IQ on compound performance just went up about 10 points after listening to this guy. Dude is a freaking air flow genius!
I had seen videos explaining compounded turbocharging before this, and had a fair understanding about it, but no one had or is yet to break it down and explain such a complicated system so eloquently.
Extremely interesting video! More time with this bloke officially requested. A peek at the compound turbo setup would be great
I am in awe. This man is blowing my mind. A setup so amazing is unimaginable for me. Amazing Video.
That’s funny I had a customer hear me say something about my teacher and he made the comment ,”oh no your in training “ and I said the day I stop learning is the day I stop tuning . God Bless !
Personally I'd be more worried about someone who claims to know it all, the learning never stops and people at the peak of their respective industries are always really open about that.
It's also why they're at the peak and others are not...😂
Happy learning! - Taz.
380 Psi 🤤 that sounds awesome
You guys just get better and better. Such an interesting channel you deserve more subs. Andre's insight and work to share all this info is awesome. Love you guys 👌
Compounding turbos was something that never crossed my mind. This video blew my mind.
Thermodynamics
Simply a fascinating thing
I like hearing your interviews, I vote they compound charge a Yamaha r1 engine and race that. They will definitely get the rpms they want. Professionalism at its finest and follow up questions on point! Great work, I subscribed weeks ago.
Andre, this video is amazing. The way you ask questions to get the amount of information you got in a 20 minute video is awesome! Keep it up dude
Tuned by Shane T, he knows how to add more boost🤙
This is awesome content! Thank you for this. I love having the opportunity to listen to someone as knowledgeable as this gentleman.
Why doesn't this have more views this was ground breaking in the non diesel community. Esp in the 4 cylinder community
Wait so your talking about a 4 cylinder triple turbo cranking 3000 hp😊 That's amazing.
Loved the interviews you've done on this channel. The one you did on that time attack Integra was my favorite, however, each one continues to deliver on the quality. Really you deserve more subscribers such great content here.
Cheers Sieve. Just lucky to find people like Shane and our other awesome guests. We'll keep the videos coming =D - Taz.
Thanks for this video! You got yourselves a new subscriber!
Thank you for having a competent interview; both ya'll. Good job knowing what you're doing and what to ask.
:)
Thanks for the feedback Dumuzi! Glad you enjoyed it mate :) - Taz.
I think the easiest way to explain compound boost is compared to what baseline? Love the way Andre explains it. Shane has a great understanding and capacity to learn, process, understand, present and formulate good questions in a short time frame. I'm probably going to binge watch now....
Watching these videos makes me wish I bit the bullet and went to school for engineering...always a new challenge, always new things to learn in the tuning industry with very tangible and physically vibrant results.
I love how he talks about how impossible running a 5 sounded years ago. And now they’re knocking on the door of 5’s. Yet they had to turn down the power they could possibly make. I wonder in how many years 380psi is not gonna be enough just how if you talked about running 75-80 psi 10-15 years ago on a 4cyl they would of though you were crazy. But now we’re their. When will we actually use 300psi? But in all seriousness 3000hp on a 4cyl is absolutely astonishing. That’s 750 HP PER CYLINDER. I struggle to make that with 8 cylinders 😂.
a perfect example of why I'm a gold member. Great interview as always. Cheers
Thanks for your support and comment mate! I couldn't wait any longer to release this one haha Still have heaps of great ones in the vault for the coming weeks too! - Taz.
Dang and I was proud of my 420bhp 400lbft det this is crazy!
I think this is one of the best interviews Andre has done. Sure is satisfying to listen to such a complex setup explained so well 👌👌 Was curious as to Collins setup when he went compound and how it worked. Shane and Andre are like the living version of google without needing to search for anything else cos they nail everything you are wondering. Unreal guys! 👌💪
I haven't had a chance to watch it yet myself, but we got a great interview with Colin at PRI2018 as well so keep an eye out ;) - Taz.
Woah that's cool I see compound setups all the time on trucks and tractors running diesel... but on a 4cyl making 3k hp that's just insane!
Fantastic vid with great info on his compound setup. When it comes to compound turbocharging gasoline engines I always see people implement it with the goal of obtaining some low-end/midrange power with a strong top end. This setup is designed to run super high psi for extreme hp which I haven't come across before. Great stuff!
I wish Shane T is my mentor and I’m the protege. He’s one of the best tuner in the world no doubt
It is so good to listen to people who know what they are talking about. Great Vid. Thank you.
I always wondered how they tuned the wastegates for compound turbos. Well now I know. That engine setup is going to be a heavy hitter for 5's. I hope they make it
The assumption is the more turbos the more complicated it should be. Kevin Jewer's setup is the same, takes the signal from the top of the port. He went from air-to air, then methanol which is what Jett is going to air to water which is what Shane explains the benefit over the added weight. Another 900 whp offsets the 80-100 lbs added, very easily. Actually more people are figuring that out, just make more power.
Two very intelligent guys here. I enjoyed watching this.
Wow great info coming from both parties here. Excellent! Good to know even the best hook things up incorrectly once in awhile! I recently started my car having forgotten to reinstall one of the spark plugs. Sounded hellacious
Probably the best and most interesting interview you have ever done top content as usual 👍👍👍
Thanks Michael! - Taz.
I remember Norwood did a total billet engine for an Acura integta running two Y2K turbos. Interesting article. However this compound setup is something else, ShaneT will definitely figure it all out.
Great interview, top class video. Can't wait to see this engine on the strip!
I like Shane's explanations and your questions direct this tech talk all I've ever wanted to know about compound turbo setups, Thanks!
A 3000hp “docile” motor lol. Modern time are amazing.

Andre the man ! Love this channel ! so underrated in views & subs. HP academy should be smashing it but I guess the following will come - keep up the good work and doing what your doing 👊🏻

5 minutes he answered almost all my questions !!!!!!!!!
Shane sweats tuning knowledge. We love chatting to him and stoked your enjoyed watching 😎 - Taz.
And there is me, trying to collect money to turbo my m52 to make it into 400hp mark haha.
Great knowledge, thanks for the amazing videos guys!
a joy to listen to, he explains everything really well and is passionate !! great vid
This guy knows how to explain this stuff like nobody else
BEST tech info yet!! :)
I have a feeling that Shane found compounding turbos "easy" because he'd crunched plenty of numbers before picking the parts to assemble the whole thing. Just as I know I'd have blown many engines trying the same thing.
Fantastic interview explaining lots of complicated ideas in a way that even a simple guy like me can intuitively understand.
ALL competition engines are built by crunching the numbers first. That's the ONLY way to do it. Successful engine builders don't just guess at a bunch of parts, then throw the motor together and pray. That would be just stupid.
10 bars of boost is just INSANE!
@bobwatters 11 bar of pressure, 10 bar of boost
This guy ain't fucking around. I like him
I had to watch this 4 times to fully comprehend this but what I realize is that compound set ups are the best for high hp 4cyl.
Not just 4 cylinders....
I just subscribed cause that conversation I just watched was totally worth my 20 minutes!
Shane is awesome eh! We've been lucky enough to chat to him a few times over the years to make sure you have a quick search on the channel and we have another interview with him lined up for release in the coming weeks too 🤘 - Taz.
Shane is an animal and Andre is simply the best interviewer in the industry. Having at interviewer that understands the topic at hand at such a high level really brings out the best discussions. Bravo.
Shanes excitement is infectious eh! Love seeing his interviews, which we could catch up more often - Taz.
hold my beer, i'm going to turbo my turbo'd turbo.
Should lock these two guys in shop together and see what comes out. Im sure it would be impressive!
Wow this video is amazing it absolutely blows my mine .... good job
Every interview with Shane leaves you hooked.
This man knows more about compressor wheels than most of us know about everything.
Absolutely wild! Got me thinking...

What you find is the more knowledge you gain, the more questions you will have. It's a never ending process....
Seeking bolt on lawnmower mods for flight. Thank you UA-cam this recommendation will do.
What Shane just mention about making the same torque at a higher RPM is right on par with what I’ve done with the stock internals Hayabusa Dyno Tune it could handle 200 foot pounds of torque early on in the booth strange went to a larger turbo and made 200 foot pounds of torque near red light hence a stock internal Busa made 320 hp at red line 350 was possible but I ran out of injector i’ve been wanting to build compound turbos for a while now I’m glad to see somebody’s done it that’s making real power in numbers
Do it,man.sounds awesome.and then bring it to our big salt lake here in south Australia to see how fast it will go😉
I'd like to see that engine with the Koenigsegg bell-shaped clutch and electronic valves.
@@dieselgeezer18 No, it would disintegrate into little pieces.
This is some high level stuff, from two great petrol heads. Love it!
This bloke is amazing. The last time you had him on he was just as informative. Also I think he should let the engine hit 380psi. Just once, just to make sure his math is correct, make sure it's being filmed tho. So one thing I'm curious on, if you had a compound setup that used supercharger then turbo, isn't the power going to eventually be limited by how much air can be dragged thru the supercharger, or for that matter, pushed out the exhaust housing of the turbo? Surely there is a point at which the whole system either chokes the intake, or back pressures the exhaust?
Of course, EVERYTHING has limits. By the way, blown diesels have used combinations of turbos feeding roots blowers for decades already.
Shane.T knows his stuff, and Andre askes some damn good questions!!!!!!!!!!!!
This guy for sure knows what he is doing!
This video blows my mind.
Love te hear some one talking about te importance of interstage cooling.
Most compound projects do not got that one right.
nice. 3000HP is crazy. I'm just going for 400hp on my compound turbo Subaru
Like the manner he explained the engine blows up in a nice and polite technical vocabulary
haha yes that was my favourite part =D - Taz.
Andre has a real future as an interviewer.
What an amazing interview😮
The only left of the sr20 is probly the valve cover. 150 psi and 3 turbos. My god. This should be insane
