When Brian and Beverly Barry returned from a weekend away to discover their 19-year-old daughter Kim was gone, they initially assumed she was out with friends. Then news broke that a body had been found in some bushland south of their home in Wollongong, New South Wales, and it wasn’t long before the truth came out. Kim had been murdered and brutally mutilated after a night out with a friend. The crime had all the hallmarks of a gangland slaying… but police soon honed in on an acquaintance of Kim’s named Graham Gene Potter…

12 years for murdering a woman is just plain horrendous 😢😢😢
My dad always said it's cheaper and quicker than divorce in Australia. Our society could push against legislation, but apparently no one cares for long sentences and it's the wrong message to criminals.

Why does nobody care for long sentences in Australia? Doesn't the victim's family feel cheated? Or, do the Australians still believe in th myth of rehabilitation? The whole Commonwealth treats murder so lightly and apparently the citizens are ok with it. I've never understoof it, myself! Can someone please explain?

It is as though, as you mentioned, the myth of rehabilitation could be a factor.
Around the time of sentencing for a horrific and media covered murder, people tune into know the outcome of the sentencing. It is never enough. It is almost always a term too short with a parole date that reflects credit for time served, and allows for earlier release if good behaviour is conducted inside.
The families involved, often the media and the general public are often upset at the short sentencing.
Nothing is ever done about it. We went from hanging people for the crime of stealing sheep 300 years ago, to 15 years before parole for murder, usually downgraded to manslaughter, far too often.
The crimes and sentences rarely match.
Our prisons are apparently quite comfortable homes away from home. I'm sure they are still scary and isolated places to be but not as deprived or harsh as some other countries.
Really could be a system overhaul. Can't say why there isn't. :(

The idiot who killed my beautiful sister only got 7.5yrs. It's a joke here in Australia that you can murder a person and not do serious time. You get longer for sentences for alot less.

There's no way you'd take your brother back to your place if there was a possibility 2 murdering Drg-dealers were there or could return. You wouldn't endanger your sibling or anyone else & the fact neither of the Potter parents considered that at the time is bizarre. For homicidal dealers those two guys were hella considerate, waiting for Graham's guests to leave before returning to clean-up the scene & letting Potter live was really kind of them. It never ceases to amaze me how gullible people can be, but to campaign for a stranger because he's "soft-spoken "so sounds innocent is bonkers
If there's one thing I've learned from watching True Crime shows is that it's NEVER a mannequin

Well... once, my mother, uncle, aunt, and their step sister dressed up a mannequin and laid it on the side of a road in the middle of the night while they drank beer in a field next to the road and waited to see what happened.
Next car passing by happened to be a cop car. The cops stopped, got out, and when they saw it was a mannequin they started kicking the crap out of it, then started shining their flashlights into the field while my family members panicked and crawled away through the grass. This was in the 1970s.
So, sometimes it is a mannequin, but those incidents don't become news stories.

Life is super cheap in Australia. Our government finds it cheaper to let regular people be murdered rather than pay the cost of imprisonment. I am now certain organised crime is behind our Judicial system.
You end up hating their legal system more than the murderer. Also all the bumbling "we pulled him over, he got away" fail antics...
@@DinoCism I hated our legal system about 30yrs ago, now I just see no hope in it. But this is what happens in a country that thinks multiculturalism works and manipulates laws so every culture just about has its own personal clause. It's naught but a fallacy, it's a disaster for everyday people.
Yep we're a bunch of pussies over here. It's pathetic. And to be honest, it was no wonder Graham was able to evade the law for so long. It sounded like he was dealing with the keystone cops!! Embarrassing.
Imagine the money, heartache and time that would've been saved if the piece of 💩 was kept in prison longer than 14 years for butchering a woman? Unbelievable.

What tickled me was when I looked for the name of the person telling these stories, it says anonymous. How humble! They have the best format, from opening to close. And they care for their listeners, always telling you beforehand if a child is involved, numbers where one can find help.
One show and they had me.

I was shooting guns when I was a kid in the hills behind my house and back then people would dump their trash there. I noticed some legs and a torso in the brush and to my surprise it was actually a mannequin.

Wow, phenomenal research and presentation. I've never heard the famiy's perspective before in this case, nor thet his fiancee still married him, his escape, and all the follow up. Geez. That taxi driver story was a real curve ball too, but I suspect it's a red herring. Why would an innocent man brag about connections with other criminals? So odd. Not sure I would embrace criminal life if I were truly innocent.
He bragged whilst in jail and perfectly likely he was "radicalised" whilst being in jail. In jail soft criminals often become harder criminals because, for whatever reason, we let prisoners talk to each other then act shocked that most prisoners come out worse than when they went in. If he was innocent which I can't help but think he was given the victim told her friend right at the start that she wanted someone to stay with her.... then it's no wonder he went mad in jail.

So, what was the final reason he killed her?
It seems like she rejected his advances. Made him rage and hit her, killing the poor child. She was only 19.
Go way upstairs to the top floor of a big department store and you will find mannequins from fashions from years and years ago. They're stored up there with old display units. My point is, the stores do not throw the mannequins out in the dumpers, ever. It's never a mannequin people find in the ditch, in the field, in the river. That's the stupidest thing I ever heard of. Oh, I forgot the stupidest things are these clichés. She has a smile that lights up the room, he'd give the shirt off his back, they are the nicest people in the world, the life of the party, (which means you're just loud,), people gravitate to you, all those clichés mean that you're gonna wind up dead in the ditch mistaken for a mannequin.
People default to the mannequin scenario because they don't want to think the unthinkable, which is it's a body. The light up a room thing is the tendency those grieving have, to idealised a loved one: & a remnant of the 'dont speak ill of the dead' social norm. Which judging by comments I've seen on so many True Crime docs is dying out, in favour of victim blaming instead.
This case happened the month and year I was born.
Why didnt they go to the police when their daughter didnt come home for days? Seems unusual that a young girl would go off for days without telling her parents even back then. Just asking. Not victim blaming , but just wondering.
A bad crime novelist wouldn't write that many police & judicial failures into a story... Our police & crown prosecutors work their rear ends off to catch the criminals & our judicial system lets them, the victims, their families, the community & the nation down, time & time again. And it's not just for crimes like mur**er, either. It's pretty much the same in all 'Commonwealth' countries. Wonder if anyone's done a PhD on why our sentencing laws are frequently so inadequate in the people's eyes...
Is there any actual large scale public calls and pushes to change sentencing laws? Because I always hear about “the public being outraged” yet nothing ever changes, except getting better for criminals. Not saying the US is perfect but like 95% of these Australian cases would end with life without parole or the death sentence here. I can get weird jury decisions, but the actual judicial system in Australia just seems beyond wrong
I agree in this case potter got off way too lightly. His original sentence was life; which is 25 years. It was then changed to 12 years minimum, he gets out after 14. Be interesting to see what he receives this time. Just to let you know that not all murders get light sentences, most get 25 years and we have a number who will never get out. 😊
He's finally caught and I still expected you to say he got parole again. I mean why not? Clearly the citizenry of the country are not that high on the protect and serve lists.
It’s the legal system most of all. Not to say that all law enforcement is great and definitely have been incidents of corruption, but there are many dedicated frustrated police officers and detectives. A big outcry last year led to a ruling to prevent a serial killer, Paul Denyer, ever getting parole.
His story sounds so incredible that it would have been far more believable if he had said that aliens killed her. I somehow doubt that dealers would kill a girl in his living room and let him live, leave the body with him overnight, and then dismember it in his presence, and leave it to him to dispose of it.

My personal theory, which is pure speculation, is that Potter was already acquainted with the way organized criminals dispose of bodies because he was, at that time, already either in contact with drug dealers, or was one himself. I have trouble believing an innocent man who lost a decade of his life to a crime supposedly committed by drug dealers would then go on to become *heavily* involved in the drug trade himself, and even agree to serve as a hitman for some gang.
One might argue he just couldn't find a job after being released, but that's clearly not the case, as he was clearly quite keen at disguising himself, and plenty capable of finding work even while on the run. An innocent man would not stoop low enough to accept a hit job.
I don't think there were two strange men after Kim at all that night. Why would Potter even bring his brother back to his place, where a murder had just occurred, if he wasn't the perpetrator? Wouldn't he be worried for his brother's safety? What if the men came back and did something to his brother? And Potter could have also just chosen to stay at his wife-to-be's place- why would an innocent person prefer to stay somewhere a bloody murder had just occurred?
If the taxi driver's story checks out and Potter brought another man home along with Kim, then either that friend is completely unrelated to the case and just lived nearby (thus accepting the ride) or he also was involved with the murder. I think it's unlikely that he wasn't involved, because why else would this mystery man not come forward with this information? Did he also go on vacation soon afterwards and missed the investigation, like the driver? Or perhaps he really was a complete stranger to Potter and Kim, and thus had no idea he rode a cab with a murderer. You can't ever rule anything out, I guess, but it seems unlikely.
Again, this is pure speculation, and it could be perceived as a bit disrespectful, but I think it's possible Kim accepted to try a three-way that night, with Potter and the other guy. Maybe that's why she was embarrassed during the drive- not because she was with a man, but because she was with two. Maybe this other guy was also involved with the drug trade, who knows.
Whatever the case may be, I think there are three scenarios that are the most likely:
-She died accidentally as a result of asphyxiation during sex and Potter was scared of facing consequences for it (jail time + his fiancée finding out about this hook up).
-She died accidentally as a result of an overdose after accepting to try drugs, and didn't want to risk getting prosecuted for causing an overdose. Let's face it, even if someone has never shown interest in trying drugs recreationally, anyone who's tried drugs has had a first time, and sometimes it's a spur of the moment decision, often during nights out. This mixed in with the fact she might have been drunk could cause her to not think this decision through, overdo it (as first-timers often do), or the mix just didn't bode well with her body.
-She was killed after threatening to out this affair to Potter's future wife, or maybe/also out his drug use. This isn't an uncommon reason for murder to be committed, especially considering Potter seemed genuinely kind of keen on staying with his fiancée.
If the death was accidental, then it's odd blood would be found in the spare bedroom, but maybe Potter began the dismemberment there, not realizing how much of a gory mess he was bound to make, and thus moved her body to the bathroom after finding out that freshly deceased bodies still bleed out a fair amount.
I think it's unlikely that Kim went over to his flat only to reject his advances. It's possible, but I just don't find it probable... Especially considering witnesses describe them as holding hands and kind of looking intimate. Most women know not to spend the night at random men's houses if they don't plan on hooking up with them, the risk of getting drugged and raped rarely falls on deaf ears. Sure, she sort of knew him and most likely trusted him to a certain extent (and again, if she was drunk she might very well have not been able to assess risk too properly), but most women just don't casually stay over alone at a male *acquaintance's* house if sex is not on the table (again, if they were close friends I would be more willing to entertain that though). And if she knew the cab driver, all the more reason for her to ask to be driven home if she didn't want to have sex with Potter. I'm a man myself, and if a female friend felt unsafe going back alone, I'd be pretty comfortable riding a taxi with her and watch her get into her house safely.
I also suspect that if there truly was a second man involved, then Potter might have gotten help with the dismemberment, and then left most of the cleaning up to the other guy. That way, he would be able to go back to the club and not raise any suspicions by being gone for too long. I doubt it would be easy to quickly clean after a dismembered body, and then hide it for the night too. If his brother didn't notice anything off, then some proper cleaning had definitely taken place. And, you know, maybe that's why Potter's story involved two culprits in the first place. Maybe he was smart enough to figure there *could* be enough evidence to show that two people must have been involved, and developed his story from there. Potter is a vile, impulsive man, and definitely no genius, but his ability to disguise himself so thoroughly and evade capture for decades proves that he wasn't entirely void of forethought either.

Dude 100% did it but honestly at least as an American I know to never cooperate with the cops on anything unless I have an attorney I trust in the room. The job of cops (at least in America) is to close cases and they don't really care if its the right person most of the time.
