Hey friends, thank you for watching! 😊 I hope you enjoyed this episode! Please be sure to subscribe for future episodes and lots more vegan nutrition content! 💪🌱
You can definitely be a great athlete as a vegan. I switched to whole foods diet plant-based last July. I just got second place in the Wisconsin Marathon this past Saturday with a time of 2:40. I ran 11 miles this morning and felt good. The power of plants repaired my body fast enough that I can get back into training right away. Turned 40 this year and I have so much more energy than I did before being vegan.
That's fantastic to hear about your marathon and it's awesome that you're doing it on a plant-based diet! Do you mind sharing any specifics about your meal regiment? I'm curious what your diet is like for such a cardio-heavy athlete. 💚
@@TheVeganGym I usually average around 3,000 calories a day, but would ideally like to average 2,800 in the near future. I researched elite marathoners and came to the conclusion that they average around 20 calories per pound, so for my goal weight of 140 lbs, that's where I got 2,800 calories. I try to hit macros of 15/70/15 (protein/carbs/fat). This allows me to hit just over 100g of protein per day and for my goal weight, will be 1.6 x kg.
For breakfast, I either usually have oatmeal with protein powder, plant-based milk and a package of cauliflower rice along with fruit and coffee or throw in potatoes, a pound of vegetables, tofu and seasonings with fruit and coffee. For
For lunch, I usually just do a fruit smoothie or a plant-based shake with chia seeds and flax seeds to get my omega 3s. For both, I add in a package of frozen cauliflower rice to add another veggie and creaminess to the smoothie.
For dinner, it's usually three-bean chili with a ton of vegetables and a grain or I have potatoes with broccoli and beans/lentils.
For snacks, it's usually a ton of fruit or more vegetables. My wife thinks I'm crazy that I can eat a whole package of spinach or other greens by themselves with no dressing.
For dessert, my favorite is homemade bread with jam or another smoothie/shake.
When I first transitioned to a plant-based diet, I was eating Just Egg, plant-based meat alternatives and was still eating chips, crackers and other processed foods. I no longer have a taste for any of these and usually the most processed foods I eat in a day are the protein powder I used (Earth Chimp) and my homemade bread.
I run around 80-100 miles a week and strength train 3-4 hours a week. I try to ride the bike everyday even though I hate it, since I follow David Goggins and he says to always do something that you hate everyday :)
I appreciate you showing your struggles, that was honestly the most motivating thing I've seen in a long time. VEGAN POWER!!
Vegan power, absolutely!! I try to be as candid as possible. When I have struggles, you will know! Glad you're finding the videos helpful and motivating. 😃
Ive been pushing hard at the gym. Lifting heavy as I can, reps till failure, building up cardio. In two months, I've leveled up in every way. It's been exhilarating. This week I've been exhausted, and when it came time to hit the gym, I drove there, sat in my car and thought, I'm not feeling this, maybe I'm coming down with a flu. I skipped the gym, took some rest. Next morning a video was recommended by a vegan builder and the video was how he's on a 6 week cycle, the 7th week is a rest week where you lift half the weight you normally do, and half the reps because the body needs that break. Well I went 8 weeks without a rest week! It was serendipitous to watch that video at the right time. Very helpful. I'm only a few days into my rest week and my energy is climbing back up.
Great video btw.
Pay now or pay later, either way, we're going to pay 👍🌱💪
"Pay now or pay later, either way, we're going to pay." Absolutely love that. Hope your rest week is still going well! What kind of gym goals do you have at the moment? 😃💚
Great interview. Love seeing more pro athletes going plant based.
Agreed. I also love how he educated himself on how beneficial a plant based vegan diet is.
Absolutely! More are doing it all the time! And Deatrich is a great model for other athletes to go vegan! 😃💚
I have watched a few of your videos so far and enjoy your honesty. Relatable. Vegan power! Animal liberation!
Glad you're enjoying the channel! Totally agree with what you're saying and I'm glad you found everything relatable. When I have struggles, you will know about them. 💚
Wow, Deatrich is such a gracious guy. Fun to hear from someone like that!
Absolutely!! Amazing person and amazing athlete! 😃
Love your content. When I’m out and about, I take a ziplock bag of small cooked potatoes.. I call them “pocket potatoes”. They help hold off hunger until I get home. You are so correct when you say your body wants to give up, but you can still power through. I went for my first black belt (karate) at 47, and the training was intense. (I started at 41). Many times you want to give up. But you push through and it was the most rewarding thing I had ever done. I’m still training at 71, although not maybe as intense as I did when I was younger. I had a full hip replacement 8 years ago and a bit of a frozen shoulder at the moment, but I augment my training with slower Tai Chi movements to help with the flexibility. I’ve been vegan now for 7 years and mostly vegetarian for 40 years before that. Keep up the good work and integrity. 🇨🇦
Haha pocket potatoes!! I love that! So awesome to hear you're still training at 71. You are an example for the active person I want to be when I get to your age. Thank you so much for sharing your story! 😃💚
Really appreciated that “Choose your hard” section… truly resonated with me.
So glad those words spoke to you!! Glad you enjoyed the video! 😃💚
I always take my protein powder and bars with me when I travel. Sage advice, Leif!
Love to hear it!! Glad you found the video helpful! 😃💚
Paused at 'struggles at the gym' part and just wanted to write that I love your transparency about the things that went on in your life, and not wanting to be there - it was extremely relatable. I've been in that situation many times myself and pushed through just like you did - the pain of regret is worse than the pain of going through with it - usually, our perception of an event is not the same at all as the event itself.
Keep working hard Leif! From a fellow vegan athlete!
Thank you for the kind words! It takes a lot for me to keep pushing myself at the gym during days when I'm struggling. Glad you found the video helpful. 💚
You Rock Buddy - the struggle is real - you gotta show up - I will take this video and show up when I don't want to
Leif, what a great video! Thank you so much! I absolutely love that quote of Choose your hard!!!! So true, it is definitely not always easy, but OH SO WORTH IT IN THE END!!!! Love that you keep it real with us! 💜
Glad you loved the video! "Choosing your hard" is something that I think about daily so I'm so glad to be able to share it with my audience. 😃💚
@@TheVeganGym ... we appreciate you sharing 🙂
Super Cool Dude!! 😍
Totally agree, Deatrich is simply an amazing person and athlete. 😃💚
absolutely agree with the interview; i think people just lack enough tenacity with how they approach training and life🌱
It's definitely a balance! I know some people get burnt out too easily when they go too hard, too fast. 😃
Sending gratitude from a Daoist monastery near Seattle (USA)!
Love it! Thank you for the kind words. 😄💚
Really enjoyed the interview.
That's great to hear!! Deatrich is an amazing vegan and a fantastic athlete so it was great to talk to him. 😄
So fun! Would love a shirt or two!!!!
Very nice interview, idk if you talk about this later in the video, but I paused it around the 5min mark to say, maybe in the future if resources & time allows. Maybe you can mic up the interviewee, sometimes the volume cuts out. Appreciate the insights and hard work!
Thanks for the support! It was an impromptu interview that I wasn’t prepared for. I ran into him at the gym so I didn’t have multiple mics. Thanks for watching! 🙏
@@TheVeganGym Oh got you. I did not catch that. Well done and thanks again!
Awesome video. Great advice and inspiration.
So awesome to hear you're being inspired by this video series! I love hearing that kind of stuff. It's one of my biggest motivators for pushing hard to get this content out! 🌱😃
Very inspiring 😊 I get the impression it can be done! Love the quote choose your hard. 💯
Yes!! Choosing your hard is a concept I think about all the time. Glad it's making you think! 😃💚
Wow! Super motivating! Good on you! Fantastic to have like minded people showing up! Well done my friend!
Most definitely! Glad you finding these videos motivating! What are your current fitness goals? 😃
Really appreciate the transparency with the struggles. Your channel got me working out again and taking my health seriously.
That is AWESOME to hear!! Got any specific fitness goals you want to share? 😃
@@TheVeganGym thanks for asking! I’m pushing 40 and will be a dad soon, so my goal is to be healthy and strong enough for my kid. Sticking to a 3x weekly calisthenics routine and just signed up for my first 5K.
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed the video!!
😄🌱
Sweet... that's awesome! Plant power!
Thank you for the kind words! Plant power!

What is the name of your protein powder
I like the "Naked" brand of pea protein! 😃💚
