Youtube Music workers get fired while asking Austin City Council for Google negotiation resolution

- Опубліковано 29 лют 2024
- As workers urged City Council to pass a resolution asking Google to negotiate with UA-cam Music employees, they were told their contract was over.
The move came after the group was hopeful that Austin City Council might be able to help urge their tech giant employers to come to the bargaining table and negotiate. But a year of tension that included a strike, a unionization vote, a return-to-office and National Labor Relations Board disputes, all came to a head when tech staffing agency Cognizant held a meeting in their Austin office informing dozens of workers that their employment contract had ended.
"I'm sorry, your time has expired"... That could not have been timed better if they tried....
At least we know they will land on their feet in this roaring economy they keep telling us about.

Indeed they were employed by Cognizant, not Google, as contract workers and not full-time employees. Ultimately, they unionized for the purpose of bring recognized as full employees (again, they're contractors, not FTE) and to incur the same pay and benefits offered to the full-timers (as a contractor, you sign in total acknowledgement of your pay and benefits, and understand you're paid through the agency, not the company you're provided to).
This brings Cognizant to an awkward position, because now Google have grounds to terminate Cognizant's contract wholecloth.
That's brutal. I'm paid more as a childcare provider, with an associates degree I don't even NEED for this job. And my field make up the second lowest paid bachelor's holders on average in the country. So that's REALLY messed up. They're literally getting shafted more than us. 😱

So, some interesting info came out about this after it happened, but these people weren't actually 'employees' of UA-cam or Google. They believed they were, sure, but belief doesn't always equate truth. Rather, they were employed by a contractor named Cognizant. They were what is known as "contingent workers". Meaning their employment is contingent on the contract between Google/UA-cam and Cognizant. Because jobs like this are typically short term (lasting only till the contract ends) employees like this are paid well above the market average for the type of job they have when compared with in house (directly employed) workers. The group here weren't 'fired' as is presented here, as they remain employed through Cognizant. Rather, UA-cam/Google ended the contract that they were operating under. That's something that every contingent worker knows can happen, as the way these contracts are written, both companies are allowed to end the contracts at any time, for any or no reason at all.
