Apparently Brynne was constantly accusing him of cheating and everyone who knew them said he would never, she was just super insecure and paranoid (I’m sure the drugs only egged on the paranoia). Also apparently she had been to rehab and been clean right before this happened (hence Phil saying they were doing really good) and it was Andy Dick who she ran into and he gave her coke and she relapsed and this happened right after. Jim Belushi saw Andy at a restaurant shortly after and knocked him out.

Jon Lovitz also slammed Andy Dick’s head into a bar after Andy made a joke about putting the “Phil Hartman hex” on him and that he would be next to die.
(Jon Lovitz was a really close friend of Phil’s and had joined the cast of News Radio when Phil died. Andy Dick was also on the show with Phil and later Jon.)

@@cortneyblohm466Thank you for explaining. I've heard Andy Dick talk in radio interviews, like O + A, several times about how cruel Lovitz was to him on set, citing realistic-sounding examples. He made J.L. sound like a sadistic monster who talked a lot of trash about Phil Hartman. This is a such a different picture, I get now why and how much J.L. must have hated Dick.

I was only 12 when Phil died, but it hit me hard. Still does til this day. Couldn't watch this without crying, especially when he talked about his daughter being born. He lit up when talking about his kids. I think Brynn's killing of Phil was a complicated combination of loneliness, bitterness, and insecurity. Relationships are so much more complex than what's seen on the surface, especially when mental health and addiction are involved. I feel so bad for their children. My dad died when I was 3 and I lost my mom a few years ago. It's the worst pain imaginable to not have your parents around. Rest in peace, Phil. Your legacy lives on in your children and your work!

It seems like an extremely impulsive, split second decision of someone who was very mentally unstable. It doesn't excuse her from responsibility, but I highly question the idea that she was "of sound mind"...especially since it doesn't seem like she often was.

I love how respectful you are of all parties as you tell the story. There is NEVER an excuse to take someone's life, but you give an understanding of what was really happening behind the scenes. No one is perfect, and I'm sure there were faults on his side as well as hers throughout the marriage, but if you're that unhappy with your spouse, leave them, never take such drastic steps as this. So heartbreaking that his children lost their father, and the comedy world lost a treasured star. I'm in the UK so we never grew up with SNL or NewsRadio (social media and the internet has given us SNL since but not when I was young). We did have the Simpsons though, and I can hear Troy McClure in these clips you've added... so without even knowing it, he's been in my life too. May he rest in peace. Those poor babies being in the house at the time, that's so heartbreaking. She was very VERY insecure. Phil was friends with his ex which is how healthy secure adults communicate. Brynn went after her and threatened her. She feared her only chance at fame was being his wife. When she was called a " model" she knew she NEVER made a living at it. I modeled in a foreign country for a man who had boutiques. I AM NOT A MODEL. I can call myself a model to make me feel good but I'm not a model. The only reason he hired me was because the local women consider it beneath them and models are considered prostitutes among their peers. Heck I'm from California. We don't care about our reputations.

I was too young to have followed Phil’s career but I’m going to research it now. Thank you for bringing mental health and addiction into the light.

Addiction isn't the disease itself. It's what LEADS to mental illness. We are all addicted to something. Whether it be sugar, soda, chocolate, drugs, sex, running, video games and more. So don't say addiction is the disease. It's the chemicals in the drugs that lead to mental illness!

On the Simpsons, he sold Springfield the monorail and Troy McClure among many others.

I want to say thank you for covering this. I always want to mention something about Zoloft, the medication she was on. I feel it’s important to mention (I am in no way defending her actions I just thinks this provides additional context) that I myself was prescribed Zoloft for a time, and it did some pretty severe damage to my psyche my body my brain and my rational processing.
Zoloft can have very negative side effects if mixed with or interacting negatively with an underlying mental illness or personality disorder, or medication other drugs or medications.
I myself have BPD, and I know Zoloft can interact well, or do the extreme opposite especially when mixed with other drugs, turning the mindset into a very warped perception of reality. I see many indicators of BPD in her behaviour. It makes me wonder if there were negative interactions, mixed with a already skewed was of seeing things, likely perceived abandonments whether real or unreal, the already tense and constant fighting etc.
I think these are just insights that could provide insight as I heard Zoloft and it immediately brought me back to the way I thought and how warped my processing and impulse control was.

He sounds like a lovely man who learned that as a kid he wouldn't be safe to share emotions like many of his generation. He probably felt the safest in performing.
The bad thing about being performance-oriented and people-pleasing: you become stellar prey for narcissistic abusers because they don't care about healthy boundaries and get you hooked on an overload of love at the beginning that you so dearly needed as a kid. They really mess up your traumatized brain. 😢
Evil really so often comes as your dearest needs that "normal" people and life fail to provide for you. Phil really was a treasure and didn't deserve being treated and killed like this. 😢😢😢

The Newsradio Season 5 premiere episode is one of the most emotional you'll ever see. This was the cast's first episode without Phil and the show was centered around the funeral and goodbye of his character. The entire cast is nearly overcome with emotion toward the end.
Fun fact: King of podcasts, Joe Rogan got his start playing the electrician on Newsradio and several of his podcasts have dealt with his remembrances of Phil, the show and his fellow castmembers.
