Knowing what your end goal is, daily driver show car, etc. is key. Seems like too many go for perfection and overdo it in the beginning, and the end never comes. The boxes pile up, along with the dust, and motivation goes by the wayside.
Probably it really boils down to, like even us, a solid case of "while we're here." LOL

Great video! My truck, a 69 f250, much like the F100 you're currently working on, is just going to be a driver. That said, I've pulled everything off the frame, redone the chassis, and I'm working on rust repair on the cab. The entire process is on my channel. Although it's a driver, it needed more than what I could have done and kept it on the road at the same time, at least, at first. It'll be going back together ratty looking, but safe and rust free.
The last thing I did during my restoration on my 1968 Mustang Coupe was to install power disc brakes (Kelsey Hayes four piston calipers). What a difference with pure driving pleasure knowing you can stop and it's sooo much better on cruise night when your on the brakes more than the accelerator.
As usual, your videos are very useful...wish I had seen this 10 years ago. Just now getting back on the 60s Mustang. Thanks for sharing information!!

This is great information. My next project, a '78 Firebird, is just about ready to start, so this is perfect timing.
If you take the front end completely off, but new bolts and clips to put back together. It's. New and makes it so easy.
I'm planning on doing
rust prevention/repair, suspension, weatherstripping, interior, electronics, engine swap, and paint

As you said, my 67 GTO started out as a just a really nice driver.. ! ... For some reason,, Or Some Force, it slowing materialized into a full body off restoration...
Every nut, bolt, and washer,, you get my point..

Perfect! Restoring my 71 Firebird Formula that I have had since the 70's and this is exactly what I wanted to know. Plan on having steps done but I did not realize that each step is generally done by separate shops, paint and body, restomod suspension, interior and engine "shops"AND that it is going to be up to me to sort of coordinate. Video framed the steps for me, THANKS!

GOOD TOPIC ! I differ a bit on order though because I think it depends on other categories and current condition. For example, I am restoring a 1966 Mustang Coupe. And I have about 20x22 working space (plus a bit more for storing parts). The cars driveline is all set so I would not dream of removing but then again, I am not going for concours..lets say I am going for PRE concours..post daily driver LOL...
So from there, yes, safety first which means a complete brake job (drums kept but 2 bowl master), verifying the suspension, etc. Driveline, trannie, driveshaft. Then, chassis refurb in terms of derusting, sealing, etc. Checking all lines (brake and fuel). Mind you, the interior is already gutted and except for painting the dash, it will be LAST or darn close.
Now all of this I am doing from FRONT to back. In other words, I don't move from the engine box until its done. Same with the chassis. then on to the trunk. Tank removed. Everything is wire brushed (manual and power), de-rusted if present and sealed. Now I have peace of mind the foundation is solid.
What I am saying is I do the heavy lifting no fun work first. Windshield out, then back window, Now its going to get good. Now I get t do what I want...oops ...forgot...working on the windows while the doors are STILL IN...Much easier while they are vertical.
Okay, now fun stuff. Body work. Stripping, coating, priming, sanding, repeat...LOL...Now I can paint .....and now I can move to the interior. Headliner, door inserts, carpet, etc etc. Glass back on.
Sorry for the long post..what I am trying to say is it really depends on past daily driver but not concours, where you started....total rustbucket or part way there... Thanks though ..watch ALL your videos.

The weekend work standard is golden...those things that take longer than a weekend is what kills so many builds...also people overestimate their skills and underestimate the amount it costs..sometimes you have to bite the bullet and pay the pro to get the work done.

This is what my dad and I are struggling with currently, started a 68’ Barracuda resto and during disassembly found that 3/4 frame rails are completely rusted through. Two can be bought one has to be fabricated. Rear right quarter panel also needs to be cut out and replaced. Still deciding whether we attempt both on our own vs paying a shop. Both take a fair amount of time especially to do the right way.

Agree re the crate motors, these days they are so cheap its not worth building your own HP/$ but Electric man! 40 year old wiring loom's - If you are gutting a car they need checking/fixining/thowing in the bin before you start bolting bits back on...
Love the rustoleum tip., how may times have you seen rust coming back through DIY repairs painted with undercoat!
Safety is the obvious. The first mandatory step for my past 20 years of restoration is complete gut and strip to locate every spec of rust that can be found. Absolutely pull all the glass out of the car. During this process be extremely gentle with every single thing you touch and remove. Never assume you can replace anything. Catalog, box, bag and label everything you remove storing the parts in a clean and climate controlled environment.....thats my tip before even watching this video. Now let's see what the host says.

I have a 68 cougar my mom gave me. Everything is new! Only problem, it's all disassembled.
I don't even know where to start.
Just do a little bit along. I like working inside out unless it needs paint.. If it's just an assembly job I work from the interior to the outside.
@@AutoRestoMod good advice, thanks ! Yes, brand new paint already. Hard part for me is the wiring because the entire dash is disassembled, and the putting all the glass back on, because it was all taken off for the paint job.

Good show, Jeff. I've been struggling with those questions for years. Currently working on a 67 Camaro convertible which started out to be a driver, but has taken on a life of its own. Currently, it looks like a pig on a spit (no so much like your chicken on a rotisserie). My problem has been that, the farther along it goes, the farther I wish to take it. Keep up the great work, friend!

I'm an automotive painter so painting the car will not be an issue for me, but having a place to do the rest is a problem.

However sometimes the 1st car and 2nd car build options get mixed together. I think thats where I am, weekend car, sometimes drive it several days a week for fun, trying to make it look pretty nice. But want to still not worry about the rain. Etc.

That is the hard thing. how to build it so that you don't get grumpy when the rain hits the windshield at work. I'm struggling with that.
I restore my friends 69 Corvette you know one Bay garage do you eat off the floors took a year and a half we are very dedicated it was a show worthy car
Make the car safe whatever you do make sure you can drive it everyday
Safety first. I keep a build bible of what has been done. Tires and brakes don't go cheap your life may depend on it. Roller paint job works good for floors and other places that may rust. I got a wagoneer it goes to club events and trial rides and mustang goes to drag way. The 460 in the fox body gets attention. The fox body is cheap stripped roller. My 10x10 space is hard to work on motorcycle on let alone a full sized vehicle. Had to build shelving for trim off wagoneer. Get on that rust it will not get any better with time. Don't be like me and have too many projects and budget for only part of one.
I'm working on "redoing" my first cruiser 67 mustang. Body and paint is in excellent condition from the previous owner. But they lacked doing the floor supports. So the undercarriage needs work that will require destroying body work and paint already done. They did your list backwards. Now im trying to fix it on a shoe string budget. I'm trying to do the smaller jobs, and pretend the big jobs don't exist. When in my mind.....stressing. it takes the the joy and fun out of the entire project. At what point, is it good to decide to just walk away, take a break, and come back to it later?
First thing I do is get wiring in good shape and then the mechanical.. next frame work if any then body and last interrior.

I watched about five minutes of the video all that was repeated and repeated was "safety". That's all fine and dandy but what were the "steps" that were supposed to be covered? Most are old enoughto know about "safety"

Step #0: Clear out a space of the same volume as the vehicle you're intending to build and start piling $100 bills into it. Don't even consider feeling about thinking of which vehicle to buy to restore until that volume is packed solid to the ceiling.

Tore down the engine all those seals and gaskets towards the transmission down it don't take that much just have to be a little bit resourceful don't make your expectations too high too high
I have a unrestored 1982 Chrysler Fifth Avenue driver daily driver I go to car shows the car is showroom condition I get beat by older cars that say they're unrestored and they are not I have all my little Stone chips on my car interior is immaculate car is almost showroom condition they just passed me by they don't even know what to look at that
Covid shut my car restoration down.
That has happened to a lot of folks.
@@AutoRestoMod It also seemed to energize alot of people. All of the carshows I have attended this year had record numbers of cars...people had more time to work on them.
