I think it is recommended to leave your potatoes in the ground for two weeks after you cut the hulms off. This is to allow the blight spores to die as you risk getting the spores on the potatoes when you lift them if lifted too soon.

Thank you very much for your comment which is greatly appreciated. Yes, this is what I have done for most of my potatoes which I will harvest in a few weeks. The extra time in the soil/compost also helps to make the skins a little more resilient and therefore better for storage. Kind regards. Gary

It seems we have a shared affection for potatoes and Birmingham City. I just watched your BCFC podcast and came straight here after a search, was confused for a couple of minutes.

Thank you. That was helpful. Just harvested a couple of plants this morning due to the same issue. Hoping the rest of the crop and tomatoes survive! Good luck with yours!

I had it too Gary on my Charlottes. I harvested them from the ground and disposed of the leaves. I wasn't sure if it was blight but looking at your video it definitely was. Luckily the rest of my potatoes are the other side of the allotment and they seem good at the moment. My tomatoes are in the garden with the flowers so they will be ok. My only problem is I have a Bumblebee nest in my compost bin where my squashes are growing! Not keen on going near it to plant, so I have space not being used. Thankyou so much for this video.

Thank you very much for your comment Jenny which is greatly appreciated. You seem to have had exactly the same issue as me with your Charlottes. It really took me by surprise as I’ve not had this happen with my Charlottes before. Kind regards. Gary

Wow, thought it was too early for blight yet. A couple of years ago I got it on my toms in polytunnel, just ripped them all out straight away 😞

I’ve got potato blight on my Christmas potatoes, I’ve cut the leaves off that are affected but not sure if some will survive due to the amount I’ve had to remove but I’ll just have to wait and see. I don’t know if there’s anything else I can do. Do you have any advice because these are well away from harvesting thanks x

Hi Lucy. Sorry to hear you have blight which is always difficult to see. It depends on how advanced the blight is really. You have done the right thing by cutting off the effected leaves and now it will be a case of see what happens over the next few weeks. You may be lucky and get new growth that is not blight affected however, blight is particularly harsh and difficult to deal with so you may have to prepare for the worst. Kind regards. Gary
