Thanks for that Ivan- in 40+ years of growing veg I've never seen blight, and that's shown me something to look out for

Great advice mate, there's loads of gardeners who'd persevere with those spuds and end up disappointed.

it spread to tomato and peppers as well.. and now a new more resistant blight is discovered and not so treatable. big farmers spray against blight 5 times each season

As they say here in NI them plants are "tatty bread." Thanks for that never grown spuds before, but I've spread them around the garden in 3 separate places, just in case. Happy you have at least a feed out of them.

better than nothing. I had to harvest one of mine early but I had a fair few that's perfect for new potatoes. I'm going to look at canning some as they store that way really well

Blight comes from the soil not the plant !! That is why a two year rotation for all night shades is highly recommended ! It

Hi Ivan , great update , I am a bit worried about my potatoes too , ihave a 6x3 raised bed half Charlotte's and half red Duke of York both put in on 23/3 but my Charlotte's leaves are a very yellow and brown some have totally gone but my red Duke of Yorkshire are fine still green , no flowers on either and after watching your update I'm a bit worried any advice gratefully received from 👍

    • @ivans-gardening-allotment-uk
      @ivans-gardening-allotment-uk  Рік тому +2

      Hi Jim try this
      3 tablespoons of baking soda
      1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
      1 teaspoon of dish soap
      1 gallon of water
Mix all of the ingredients and add to a spray bottle. Be sure to spray the affected and surrounding plants early in the morning or late in the day when the sun isn’t so intense.
You’ll need to reapply every few days, especially if you’ve had rain.
Don’t expect any miracles. The above recipe will help slow the disease’s spread, so you still have fruit to harvest but likely won’t completely kill a major outbreak.
      Hope this helps Thank you

I had what I thought was early blight last year around May/early June but it didn't look the same as yours. The spots on mine appeared to be concentrically ringed which is what I had seen on some early blight photos online. In the end I left them and harvested the crop without issue (even for the main crops). The disease did not spread to nearby tomatoes so I'm really not sure what it was but it certainly is concerning.
Magnesium deficiency is one possible cause I found for my case. In the case of your potatoes I wonder if it might be septoria leaf spot and not blight as I could not really see any concentric rings on the spots. What do you think? P.S. I am not an expert

@@ivans-gardening-allotment-uk Yeah definitely not easy, I think disposing of them is the right call if in doubt as early blight can remain in the soil if it is that.
