    It's funny how Slott writes Spider-man. He does try to move things ahead, but also wrote Peter as a lot more immature than he'd had previously and would often just set things back to the status quo once he gets bored and teases MJ and Peters reunion, only to throw her away for long stretches of time.

    • @Mrryn
      @Mrryn 10 днів тому

      He feels really inconsistent. Like he makes it a point that Peter's will gets "broken" enough to get wiped by Otto in the face of Otto saying basically the generic anti-Batman rhetoric of him "being as bad as his villains" and "him being responsible for countless deaths out of his ironic selfish interest in upholding his no killing rule." Which just comes off as someone who both doesn't get Peter and doesn't care for him at all, with his little "Suck it up" comment, even if just trolling, doesn't help that image.
      Yet in the second run with Superior Venom, he makes it a centerpoint in the story Peter's indomitable will and that part of Peter in Otto being what truly made him heroic which now gives the impression of Slott knowing Peter's character well...but that doesn't even track well because there was the whole point, just before, of Peter's will folding like origami paper to Otto's critique with Peter not even getting a real word in.
      It's a confusing mess and tbh, between that and the "ooo edgy normally super heroic character greying his morals, even though they are really blackening not greying" that honestly reeks of the worst of the 90's, made Superior a run I'm not a fan of.

    Something I wanted to mention in the previous videos. It has been shown that stories about stable, healthy romantic relationships do not sell well. People get emotionally invested in a character's turbulent romantic life, until the Wedding Ring is on the finger then they stop caring. So Marvel and DC characters who have been around longer than most people who are alive, have to be in constant romantic turmoil. So love triangles are basically the standard default, Not the exception.
    So personally, when any comic character gets an adaptation that actually lets the character have a full Arc. I want them to follow what I call "The Romantic Rule of 2".
    1. Every Hero/Heroine should have a First love, A Childishly simplistic understanding of love. That Love doesn't work out for some reason, but the Hero/Heroine has to learn something from it. And that maturity will help them with their future relationships.
    2. Every character should end up with their true love, But it shouldn't be easy. Pop culture should encourage people with representation of real World complex but healthy relationships.

    • @bloodymares
      @bloodymares 15 днів тому +1

      But there could also be challenges during the marriage! Just make some bs up where Black Cat returns and wants to insert herself back into Peter's life or whatever to make it interesting. Or that MJ has some sort of crisis of self-identity where she struggles with sudden reality of being in the marriage and has a fear of being a housewife while Peter is always out there being Spider-Man where he could get hurt and not come back.
      I read a fanfiction where MJ can't stand the thought of Peter being the lone wolf in the streets, meets Black Cat, and makes her promise that they'd always keep each other safe and make it a priority to be there for each other instead of flying solo just because they can't deal with their feelings. And then Pete is basically stuck working together with his former flame that he can't distance himself from like he normally would (because it would piss MJ off) and has to face all of the confusing emotions while Felicia realizes that MJ is truly Peter's soulmate, being as selfless and loving as him and finally is able to expand her attraction for Spider-Man into a deeper platonic love for both Pete and MJ. I wish proper comic books dared to do something like that (instead of making Black Cat a total psycho).
      TL; DR - there are ways to make adult relationships interesting. And based on the recent success of Hickman's Ultimate Spider-Man, a lot of people want it!

    • @marvelfannumber1
      @marvelfannumber1 15 днів тому

      That's not really true though.
      If you actually look at the sales figures for Amazing Spider-Man, sales have actually *drastically* declined since they retconned the marriage in 2007.
      In the early 2000's, Amazing Spider-Man was on average selling around 115,000 copies annually.
      By the time they got rid of the marriage in 2007, sales declined substantially. Since 2009, Amazing Spider-Man averages out at about 70,000 copies. This is despite them axing the 3 other ongoing Spider-Man comics in 2007, which does not seem to have increased Amazing Spider-Man's sales at all.
      In addition, one-offs where Marvel have toyed with bringing back the marriage (Renew Your Vows & Ultimate Spider-Man (2024) were both top sellers. Ultimate Spider-Man now consistently outperforming Amazing Spider-Man.
      The numbers seem to consistently suggest readers prefer a married Spider-Man to one with regressed character development. So it's clearly not a financial decision on Marvel's part. Instead it seems to be a bizarre creative decision either from the editor or from some executive.

      Well you have options in two alternate universes that exist in Marvel's: renew your vehicle vows, where Peter is still Spiderman but with a daughter and MJ or the Mc2 universe where he is retired due losing a leg during his final confrontation with the Green goblin and becomes a science teacher, has Mayday and she eventually takes on his legacy.

      My favourite is this one story where it shows an old Peter Parker with his wife MJ and Peter gets shot on a patrol by a random mugger, Pete is taken to the hospital and will make a full recovery and they keep his mask on as a sign of a respect and everyone who Spider-man has ever helped or saved goes to visit him in the hospital and it's just so heartfelt and wholesome

    • @bloodymares
      @bloodymares 15 днів тому

      Peter and MJ get married and have kids, Peter creates a company that helps the world (that he doesn't have to run by himself anymore), realizes that the responsibility to be there for his wife and children is just as, if not more, important than his duty as Spider-Man. And so he retires and passes his mantle down to Miles, making him the definitive Spider-Man. Miles has been in Peter's shadow for a long time, it's time for him to shine. I hear opinions where they shouldn't call Miles Spider-Man, that he needs his own name while Peter keeps being THE Spider-Man, when I believe the opposite, that Peter should get his well-deserved rest and enjoy a simpler life while Miles can be out there for New York. That leaves the room for Peter to return to being Spider-Man once his kids become older and go to school.

    You hit the nail on the head like 1 minute into the video on what the problem is with this story. In order for Superior Spider-Man to work, everyone else had to be stupid. Even MJ, who historically KNOWS when someone is just pretending to be Spider-Man/Peter.
    As long as you're able to ignore this little fallacy, then sure, it's an amazing story. But I can't. I wish there was a better reason or justification why no one else figured it out. MJ should've figured it out issue 1.

    My favorite Spider-man run of all time is the ORIGINAL Ultimate Spider-Man. It has the BEST version of every secondary character in his orbit, plus reimagining some of his villains in very creative ways. I love the reality show star variant of Kraven the Hunter, for example. Especially as he’s a villain I absolutely detest. If he wanted to hunt “the most dangerous game,” he’d hunt Wolverine. Or Carnage. Hunting Spidey is just cowardice.

    From the outside looking in and learning more about comics, the sad thing is that the characters cant reallt progress including Peter. It was similar in the Batman video, they just keep resetting things because some fans refuse to accept any change. Of course not all changes are good either. With different writers and interpretations of different characters(includinf bad ones), the characters are stuck in a timless loop of learning and resetting and growing then being traumatized again while some of the side characters are allowed to change or die. It seems to be an unfortunate part of the medium.

    Hell yeah check out Fantastic Four. EASILY my favorite IP from Marvel. Spider-Man is my overall favorite character from Marvel, but there's no corner of Marvel which makes me appreciate it's world building and the lane of characters as much as FF, it's so imaginative and like 80% of Marvel's cosmology comes from them. It's a shame FF as a concept, being so family oriented hasn't really survived in the public's eye after the 90's edginess, but I think the best showcase of how good they are can be seen through the ripple effect, pretty much ALL THE big baddies which originated from FF have been used for other heroes.
    Doctor Doom and Galactus being the most obvious one, they evolved from FF villains to MARVEL villains. Annihilus is a good one too. Kang being used in an MCU movie is also crazy, showcasing FF's influence. Silver Surfer just being a herald of Galactus is insanely popular etc.
    I also love Fantastic Four because they're unlike any other major superhero team. I will always love Justice League from the depth of my heart, it's THE definitive superhero team to me, but Fantastic Four I don't really like to look at as a superhero team, more so a team of adventurers, like Doctor Who/Star Trek esque shit, where they just explore the universe and the craziness from cosmic arrives to them.
    Speaking of Doctor Who, Reed's dynamic with Doom is basically just Doctor's and Master's dynamic with more capeshit, and I love me some Doctor Who as well as capeshit.

    If I were to describe Dan Slott in a single word, it would be "edgelord". If I were to describe his writing in a meme, it would be:
    "Drew like a dark, fucked up version of the Spider-Man haha. Just a glimpse into my dark reality. A full stare into my twisted perspective would make most simply go insane Imao."
    Dan Slott is an edgy subversive in a never-ending sea of edgy subversives. He is the comic book equivalent of all those people who make cheap, low-effort horror flicks every time an innocent children's character becomes public domain, with the only difference being that he masks his low-effort, shock value emo poetry as some deep, contemplative dive into human psyche.

      @@Gamer65774 calling Bailey a sidekick is like calling Miles a sidekick. He's less of a Robin and more of a Supergirl.
      Had Bailey been a sidekick he would be constantly in the ASM comics (which he isn't. He's doing his own thing in his own series)

    I don't think Otto's a hypocrite with Massacre. Otto's a murderer, no question, but he doesn't have brain damage incapable of emotion. Otto's emotions are what make him change. Massacre only felt something at the point of death. That wouldn't be good enough for a jury if he was on trial. The people should have enough common sense to get rid of monsters like this.
    I'm sorry, but the "nobody dies, not even bad guys" mentality that a lot of heroes have is ultimately more harm than good, considering most of them will never redeem themselves. I know it's not in Peter's character. But somebody has to do it.

    @ 8:13 The narrator is projecting his opinions as if they were facts. Mary Jane wasn't done a disservice by not immediately knowing it wasn't Peter. She recognized Kraven wasn't Spiderman mainly because he was too big and didn't move or act like him. Otto, on the other hand, is different because he physically was Peter and had access to all of his memories as well as his memories of her. If Peter had gone to her instead of Carly Cooper to confess and ask for help, he might've gotten his body back before he had died.

      problem with that is that Kraven wasn't the only one who was able to disguise themselves as Pete and MJ figure it out just as easily. There is chamelon who is a master of disguise and MJ figure it out just as quick and with the same logic that should applied to Otto who is a terrible actor
