Can mix voice be used for classical singing? I’m a natural baritone but I don’t sing pop music. I’d like to extend my range so I can handle tenor arias and high baritone arias but after decades of trying, I still haven’t found my mix enough to sing with power, resonance and adequate breath control. In full voice, I top out at a G4 and that’s not always a guarantee. In “mix” I can get to the hallowed “C5” but it doesn’t sound right. In fact, once I go into mix, I lose my ability to sing as loudly or with as much control as I can in full voice on lower notes. I would really, finally, like to get this mix down so I can sing what I want not just what my naturally limited chest voice will allow me to.
Hi James! If you're using Mix voice in Classical, then the Low Larynx position common to the Classical style will certainly accommodate a lot of volume! If you're Mixing with a Low Larynx though, it can be a bit more difficult to maintain nuanced Compression due to the Decompression tendencies that a Low Larynx has. Compression consonants can help you to train maintaining the Compression (G, B, D). That being said, notes up that high do not need to be terribly loud. And even for the opera tenors that do them, it's not so much about volume as it is about resonance. If you'd like to talk to Justin about this, we have a live chat coming up on 9/26! There will be more information in our Community Tab closer to the date. We hope this helps! -NYVC
Hi Tammana! We have exercises all throughout our series! You can pick and choose based on your specific needs and also pair it with episode 111, “Singers, Practice This!” -NYVC
Q: I'm a baritone sort of and I cant do the last four, my falsetto just caps at its highest pitch so I don't reach the octave and my throat feels strained. Is this what's expected from my big vocal folds or can I train to get much more height?

Falsetto is not dangerous! And you can't sing through your whole vocal range in Chest, you need to transition to the different registers. :) We have a whole series on Vocal Registers! And this new Mix Voice episode will help you to keep that chesty or "connected" sound as you go through part of your range! :) -NYVC
@@NewYorkVocalCoaching okay, thank you. There is just this advocate for speech level singing 'Power to sing' Who says it does and some others do aswell but I am glad that it was just a rumor
It isnt dangerius, but if you use it excessively vocal folds will tend to stay disconnected up in higher register(and it can be harder to find mix). When finding mix you want to learn head voice to get able to get mix voice. Though if you use falsetto over the course of multiple years, some say you may develop wobble. You should not avoid using it, its good for vocal health, just try to learn other coordinations for higher registers
When in head voice you are also connected and when you learn to sing in it, it may sound and feel like falsetto. As you practice it and go from chest to head you will see that there is no break anymore like in falsetto. Also your vocal quality will change (you will sound a bit different), your voice will get richer bcs more resonance. After learning hv you can try learning mix too and adding chestiness to it. It will sound like chest voice, but it will be higher

Yay! Finally, you're back! :) I'm always excited as a new lesson comes out. Thanks for that. But I got a prob which already starts with the second yodel 8 (g#4 and up). I cant make it lighter or softer. The 2nd 8 always sweeps back to G4 or stays silent. I need more pressure, compression & air, to reach it. In my head it sounds clean, but as i hear it - it has a metallic shine and a little bit too much compression which adds an annoying tone to a shimmering sound that i want to have clean, light, and soft. I dont like the forced falsetto sound which can sound like a soprano. i am no female. Should i overlook it and practice a siren which sounds like it has been compressed to death?
Hi Ihum! So glad you enjoyed the episode! :) For your question, we suggest bringing it to Justin's live chat. He has one this Sunday at 1PM EST! More info in our Community Tab! -NYVC
Thank you so much for a great video!! Is there any significance to the way you formed the combinations of sound/interval/concept? For instance, why is vocal fold strength exercised using "mehm" on the 1-3-5-3-1 interval? Would it be just as effective to do the vocal fold strength exercise using "ay" on the 1-6-1 interval?
Hi Victor! Justin chooses every exercise very specifically. But you could certainly try the exercise in different ways and adjust the components! -NYVC
please do as many videos about mixed voice as you can, i watched a lot of videos from you but i still struggle to find it, i have a voice teacher and my biggest problem is tension while getting at high notes, i just can't seem to unlearn it and i've been trying to do that for 3 years now
Hi justin, I have a problem doing the falsetto freely because every time I do it Its break from falsetto to chest voice( normally i see people can't go high so they crack into falsetto, but I crack from falsetto into low chest voice). I have never seen people crack like this before.
Play around with different sounds! :) It takes time and there are so many register coordinations and ways to alter how you sound. Also try recording yourself so you hear what you actually sound like! Check out episode 81! -NYVC
Hi thank you for your awesome videos . I have a question I can hit notes from g2 to c5sharp and some times to D5 and in head voice I can go up to B5 so far so good the problem is the tambor of my mix voice sound to brighter than I want to it sounds like it's to sharp and no one like it when I sing above f4 sharp Can you give me an idea of the problem man?
Hi there! Sounds like your larynx is pretty high. Try some lowering strategies to find a resonance that you like more. Ep. 17 has an exercise that could help! -NYVC
What if your voice simply doesn’t do these things? I have a lower voice and it’s hard to find help because all the voice teachers have naturally higher voices anyway
It takes time and the right techniques to develop your higher ranges. For some people it takes more time, and there are always individual habits and hurdles as well. This is why voice lesson videos can only help so much. But, to start, we'd recommend Falsetto and Flageolet work. Sometimes singers have unknowingly "bullied out" their higher registers in favor of stronger registers. We don't know if this is the case for you, but if it is then developing the lighter and thinner coordinations might take more time. But it'll happen! :) Check out these episodes: Ep. 89 "How To Sing Falsetto & Flageolet" - Vocal Register World Tour Part 4 Ep. 111 "Singers: Practice THIS!" - Voice Lessons To The World “Flageolet Explained - Expand Your Vocal Range!” - Ep. 36 Quick Singing Tips We hope this helps! -NYVC

Whitney Houston💜is the queen of mix voice cz when i listen to her shes singing n mixing her registers like 90% of time. But the song "I have nothing" the beginning lyric "Share my life🎶" is it with a smooth chest voice or its with the mix voice cz i always get confused with that, i mean always the beginning of every song😅😅

Holy grail? HA! Tell me about it! My mixed voice seems to pop up now and then when the stars align.. It sounds rich, effortless, smooth, silky and has great vibrato.. I have full control over it and can make lovely sounding vocal riffs.. Problem is that it's rare that I find it and I forget how to access it again 😂😂😂
@@NewYorkVocalCoaching I know but.. mm how can i say it, this is not a straight path to connect registers. Its like improve this, improve that but idk if that'll lead to connecting registers eventually.
YES!! Finally❣️ I love you videos Justin!! I have a question about the AY (soft, medium, loud) exercise. Is there a reason why you chose to do it on a major 6th interval? Thank youuu for your amazing videos and tips ❤️
Hi Justin! I have just "Joined" your UA-cam channel as I would love to be able to join the monthly live chats. How soon will I be informed of the schedule? I am a voice teacher and I would like to be notified of the schedule as soon as possible so I can block of the slots that I need to block so I can join the live chats. -Danny
A couple of confusing statements here: Justin you demonstrate the chest voice and then the 'head' voice. Firstly, your heaviest chest voice sure sounds like you are using quite a lifted soft palate and it doesn’t sound like the larynx is in neutral position. It sounds to me like head voice in the lower register. Secondly you then said you were singing in falsetto when you demonstrated the 'head' voice. You called it falsetto and it sounded falsetto not head voice. This to me is very ambiguous. Any chance of a clarification on this? I have you book and am enjoying it :).
Hi Laura! Thanks for your comment! Justin was just demonstrating strong vs. weak sounds in the different registers, regardless of Larynx position or Soft Palate position. It's also natural to lift the Soft Palate, and it wasn't necessary for him to drop it for Nasal Resonance for this particular demo. And, Female Head Voice and Male Falsetto are the same register (M2). So, in this clip he uses the terms synonymously. In other videos where there is more time these matters are treated with much greater detail and precision. Thank you for asking! We're always happy to help clear up anything that might be confusing. :) -NYVC
It's just another term for Female Head Voice and Male Falsetto. These are the same register and are also know as M2 or Mode 2 in scientific literature. :) -NYVC
Hi Justin! My cousin is a sound engineer and he's asking about microphone technique for singers. Apparently, it matters a great deal to the people responsible for the right sound mix during a concert or performance, and the singers end up needing additional coaching on mic technique! Any tips would be greatly appreciated! Cheers!

Hi justin, I have a problem doing the falsetto freely because every time I do it Its break from falsetto to chest voice( normally i see people can't go high so they crack into falsetto, but I crack from falsetto into low chest voice). I have never seen people crack like this before.
Hi Kit! You might need some decompression strategies to lighten things up. Try breathiness and putting an H at the beginning of the exercise. -NYVC
I'm new here and I'll try ALL of your lessons. I think it's exciting and really effective!🙏🏻
We're so glad you're here, Pamper! WELCOME! -NYVC
which scale and key does Justin normally train students in? (in majority videos)
It depends on the exercise :) -NYVC
When I sing from mix to head voice, it start to sound very nasal and very buzzy. 😭💔
Play around with different sounds! :) It takes time and there are so many register coordinations and ways to alter how you sound. Also try recording yourself so you hear what you actually sound like! Check out episode 81! -NYVC

Hi thank you for your awesome videos . I have a question
I can hit notes from g2 to c5sharp and some times to D5 and in head voice I can go up to B5 so far so good the problem is the tambor of my mix voice sound to brighter than I want to it sounds like it's to sharp and no one like it when I sing above f4 sharp
Can you give me an idea of the problem man?

Whitney Houston💜is the queen of mix voice cz when i listen to her shes singing n mixing her registers like 90% of time. But the song
"I have nothing" the beginning lyric "Share my life🎶" is it with a smooth chest voice or its with the mix voice cz i always get confused with that, i mean always the beginning of every song😅😅
The beginning of that song would be in the realm of Head Voice or light Head Dominant Mix. :) -NYVC
@@NewYorkVocalCoaching 😃👍Oh i got it thank u vm for ur help☺️🙏🏼💜💜cz i thought its a smooth chest voice.

If I can connect head and chest with no break consistently does that mean that middle section is mixed voice?
Sounds like you're successfully developing gradations of compression! -NYVC
How often should I do these exercises?
Ideally 5-6 practice sessions a week with a day of rest is good! -NYVC

Holy grail?
Oh no! We hope our Mix Voice episodes help you to find consistency! -NYVC
we really need a total tutorial about how to connect registers... its soooo hard
The exercises in this Mix Voice episode will help you do that ;) -NYVC
@@NewYorkVocalCoaching I know but.. mm how can i say it, this is not a straight path to connect registers. Its like improve this, improve that but idk if that'll lead to connecting registers eventually.
YES!! Finally❣️
I love you videos Justin!! I have a question about the AY (soft, medium, loud) exercise. Is there a reason why you chose to do it on a major 6th interval?
Thank youuu for your amazing videos and tips ❤️
He chose it because it allows for a good range! Not too small of a range to work but not too much where it becomes extra difficult for folks. :) -NYVC
I like the last vocal bendicione. The life is a mix.
😊 Glad you enjoyed it Selda! -NYVC
Can a teenager puberty male learn mixed voice?

Hi Danny! Looks like we got your email and it’s all set now! Let us know if there’s anything else we can do! :) Welcome to the channel! -NYVC
:) -NYVC
@@NewYorkVocalCoaching What is M2? Is there a video about this?
It's just another term for Female Head Voice and Male Falsetto. These are the same register and are also know as M2 or Mode 2 in scientific literature. :) -NYVC
Hi Justin! My cousin is a sound engineer and he's asking about microphone technique for singers. Apparently, it matters a great deal to the people responsible for the right sound mix during a concert or performance, and the singers end up needing additional coaching on mic technique! Any tips would be greatly appreciated! Cheers!
It certainly does! We'll keep this in mind for future episodes! Thanks Fatima! -NYVC

One question, when I was doing the Yodel exercise- My voice didn’t break. I mean I am starting to think if I’m not doing it right. Any advice?
