      Thank you so much. I hope I haven't damaged my larynx. I can still sing clean head voice, so that's a good sign, yes? I've had off tired days with sore throats from hard practice.

    Justin, I trained (opera) at the best school in London. Vocal pedagogy is an area rife with poor knowledge, confusion, and downright abuse, even by the best "teachers" who are often erstwhile (and usually frustrated) ex-professionals. I have really started diving into your site, and I just wanted to congratulate you on the clarity of your thinking and communication. I am working at 1.25 speed and have viewed about 25 videos relatively quickly as a result (to be revisited often I suspect). All of them are pointing in the SAME direction, and the SAME principles. My understanding is being continually reinforced rather than contradicted. Thank you for what you are doing here. I didn't go into the profession, but friends did, and between the teachers, the agents getting young singers singing roles well ahead of their current vocal capacity, and the triumph of staging over music, so many have hit 35 with major vocal problems and the end of the road. Bravo

    3:08 flageolet is highest in flexibiiity so building it will benefit all registers too it’s all the same cord
    5:15 volume consistency for vocal range
    Don’t want to get louder for higher notes
    Every note you sing requires vocal cords to vibrate at certain frequency
    So
    If breathe is making folds vibrate that quick then it’s not the folds themselves getting into right position to do that
    And also extra air dried cords=inflam
    Similar to ken, when throat opens up/gets right position the sound will bounce in natural amphitheaters creating resonance which is your natural volume without more air

    • @NewYorkVocalCoaching
      @NewYorkVocalCoaching  Рік тому +1

      Hi Improvement! Breath is actually what changes the volume. The "natural volume" you're talking about is Resonance and has to do with the amplification of certain Formants which are regions of Harmonics on any given note. Changing the shape of your vocal tract will change what sounds are amplified, thereby making the entirety of the sound more audible to the human ear without necessarily changing the amount of Breath. Ultimately, we want to understand how to use our Breath and Resonance in different ways to achieve various results depending on the song and situation. Learn more about Formants in episode Ep. 117 “Singing Vowels & Formants” - Voice Lessons To The World. We hope this helps! -NYVC

    This was an awesome lesson.i had a teacher who insisted on letting my vocal cords do What they wanted. Often that meant letting go but she always said eventually you will get connection. I guess she was right other teachers heard the letting go and had me do things to force connection. At the end I liked the first teacher ‘s approach.

    Dear Justin, excellent job;. Singing better means much more than just singing higher notes but this false association got overstimated and turned to be an obsession, insane one. Whenever one listens or study other music periods and their vocal aesthetics, many other performance’s qualities and criteria come to light and I believe that’s what you’re trying to say to your followers and pupils (as when you conclude this lesson by that cycle of virtue). You’re an unique teacher and singer helping people a lot making them realize that singing is a much more wise, healthy, soaring and beaitiful gift. Have a nice day and cheers!

    1:40 - 1:50 That's a good point, right there, Justin. I know this has nothing to do with singing, but I've been wanting a 6-pack just by doing abs when I should be working on my entire body; whereas I should be practicing expanding my vocal range instead of just limiting myself to just from sub-chest to head voice.

      @@NewYorkVocalCoaching The main problem is that there are 8 different kinds of flageolet (depending on range and intensity). I think I have the right one nailed down, though. It really helps with my reflux!
      By the way, did you know that Ivan Dorin namechecked you on his UA-cam channel? He said he was inspired by your videos and got a huge range by training the flageolet. He did it mostly on the AE vowel, though. Does the vowel matter?

    The right side of my throat aches whenever I swallow. I've been taking amoxicillin for a week but, the pain is still felt up until now, especially when I try to do my head voice and flageolet. I already try the salt water gargle, medicated lozenges and hot ginger tea, but it doesn't fade at all. This is really frustrating. What's weird is the pain is only felt on the right side of my throat and whenever I swallow, there's also a sudden pain piercing on my right eardrum. Hope I could do the flageolet exercise again.😢😢😢😢😢

      Are you a Beginner In singing ? . Don't worry it happened with me too . Take rest for 2-3 weeks and if possible for a whole month . It happens when you either over do flageolet for more than 20 minutes or in my case incorrectly . Do neck exercise you will feel a change .
      Advice :- Start eating Healthy Fruits for eg :- Papaya , Kivi , Grapes , Sapota etc (not apple😂😂).

      Usually us artists get inspiration from our soul. It is something you can't explain with the logical mind. You just know that it happens. Without even thinking about it, a melody comes out of nowhere and that melody suddenly speaks. If you write songs it would be great to sing any of them for us, if you feel so of course. 🎤🎶✌

    Actually love the humour you use in your videos, I have that "now that's a forward" pop into my head all the time ^^
    I only have two tiny questions left hope you can help: with the exhale when you vocalise more stronger notes, should you engage your abdominal area more than when doing the softer ones? & with runs to get the bottom of the mouth shaking the way singers do? do you just do it to get the required sound? it seems quite tricky,
    if this gets to you thanks in advance! And stay well!

    Ive heard whisper talk is not healthy n it damages vocal chords, is that true? 🤔💙

    • @NewYorkVocalCoaching
      @NewYorkVocalCoaching  Рік тому +1

      Hi Seldak! Whispering is not damaging to the vocal folds. It's just a quiet and breathy quality. For more on Breathiness and its benefits, check out this episode: Ep. 109 "The SECRET of Singing Breathy" - Voice Lessons To The World. Like any vocal quality, we don't want to get stuck doing only one thing all the time. For example, sometimes a teenager might speak in a monotone vocal fry all the time. This would not be healthy for the voice longterm. The voice needs variety in speech and in singing in order to stay healthy, just like the rest of the body. But general whispering and breathy singing are totally fine! :) -NYVC

    In order to expend my chest range from G4 To C5 I belted g4 until I barely got to A4 but I never could hit C5. After that I couldn't sing for 2 weeks. I'll try this thanks

      Oh man! Dragging chest up past a B4 isn't recommended. If you want to hit C5 in a chesty sound, definitely mix it! -NYVC

    LOVE Justins videos- I have a questions though. I have been told my whole life that whispering is a really bad thing you can do to your voice. -even worse than shouting. Today I got an exercise from you that starts with a whisper phrase. JUSTIN would you please explain it to me? I know, you are a great teacher- so I'm pretty sure you can give us an explanation♥ ♥
