- On this short video we change the old valves of a Universal Audio Solo 610 preamplifier.
Find out more about our services on www.doctormix....
There are 2 valves to change:
1) the JJ ECC 81 - www.thetubestor...
which we substituted with a GT 12AT7 - www.thomann.de...
2) the JJ ECC83S www.thetubestor...
which we substituted with a GT 12AX7C - www.thomann.de...
why would you put groove tubes in there? dang
Just got mine. Had an Old RCA tube in V1. Lousy output. Dropped Tung Sol 5751's in each socket, cuz who cares😉... Cleaner headroom, less boomy, more output available before OD or Dist. Grand.
I don't have $ for unobtanium NOS tubes.
Great preamp indeed...New tubes never let me down...
bro i have same preamp i rec. only vocals i want to buy rode k2 but k2 is tube same so what do you think with pair?
what's your opinion for this preamp? have you compared it with others for vocals with a condenser?
I see there are in/out transformers + tubes?
i love it. however mine is 10 years old. should i change the tubes? always hard to say how the sound was when new and what it would change?
great work!!
Thanks!!!
does this unit use a true high voltage supply?
Been doing this for years. With different tubes.
try some NOS mullards or NOS telefunkens in there when you get the chance, nothing comes close, that's why it's an addiction and I need therapy.
Ben Tyreman this ^
Ben Tyreman . Totally! Russian tubes are awful!
Groove tubes? Talk about mixing silk and wool!
Post some audio from before and after
man no always the most expensive valve are the best for that preamp. you have to try different valve tubes from different place to take the best sound even Chinese. That is the real deal because every single valve are different.
Try some Tatamovich 500 , best tubes in the world , like betman
Pretending you know how a tube sounds when you haven't listened to it IS whats wrong with ALL these comments. No matter what the make every tube sounds different. Period. End of story. The End. Doesn't matter what MAKE of tube you put in, break it in, listen to it (with your ears, not your eyes), test it. Get a grip you figgin weirdos.
Russian Tubes the Beeest
Try better tubes. Russian tubes are poor quality. Get some NOS American or British or German tubes....they are far far better.
I cant believe you put groove tubes in ur 610........Its not a guitar amp.......I don't understand how you guys who have so much kit and make so many videos could....allow that. Groove tubes are great for hard working touring valve gear thats used flat out every night for a few months but to put those in Bill Putnams most sublime design (even if its economised in certain ways by his kids and their accountants) its still wrong. Like putting MDF type boards into a Stradivarius. You live in Europe for gods sake! Spend a little time and money and make that circuit behave as its creator intended with lovely NOS Telefunkens....please?
Martin Squire Agreed, next video they’ll be upgrading a Porsche by swapping the engine with a Robin Reliant.
I use mine for a guitar pre-amp. Works very well, but I have considered tube rolling for effect.
I don't think it's so blasphemous. ymmv.
I was worried for a moment that you wanted to make this mandatory
groove tubes instead of JJ (Tesla) ... yes I like to ask why too.
Uhhh.... forget about the 'type' of tube and focus on the actual process he uses... by grabbing the tubes with your bare skin you are leaving oily residue and lowering the life of the tube. Use a tissue or gloves when you install. Just sayin....
