Marshall Origin 5C (Affordable Marshall Tones?)

- Is the Marshall Origin 5C a small and affordable valve/tube combo that sounds the business?
This thing could potentially be a real bargain, depending on how it sounds. It costs next to nothing, and if it sounds good, it should be a no brainer. There are a bunch of other affordable valve/tube amps on the market, but this one is really one of the cheaper ones.
I've previously tried the Origin 20 and 50 heads, and I though they were quite good. Let's see how the 5C compares.
Hope you enjoy!

Can you do Origin 20 combo?
@@scottnoricsson2023 Maybe.
@@MrPolevaulter I am in the process of saving up money to buy it , but I don't know how it will react to the 2 of my boosters ( Sd-1 and dod308) ... I guess they will both work fine but ...also I was thinking of putting g10 greenback instead of its default speaker
@@scottnoricsson2023 The Tube15 works well with overdrive at least.
@@MrPolevaulter I know but if I am to do a record in a proper studio , I want the proper tone , also my Hs3s don't seem to do the job very well which makes me sad , I wrote to DiMarzio asking about the issue I have with them ( neck pu too muddy, bridge pu okay but in the mentioned configuration has a lot of presence , good for legato bit not for picking ) and they told me to check Injectors but I am poor and don't have the money to experiment , fuck , not only did I have to compose the entire fucking thing and also practice the solos , now I have to worry about equipment , that kills the creative spirit , don't you agree?

Can you try out the Marshall 20 is has a much better speaker
I've expected the worse and i got it ! Thank you for the honest review !
Thanks!
Whenever I see a Marshall I really want it to sound awesome. I miss the days when Marshall was synonymous to quality. Maybe they've lost their way through their constant efforts to spread the brand. Ah well. It is what it is. Great review. I wholeheartedly agree with your opinion.
Yep. It's a real shame.
The 20 watt super leads and 20 watt Jcm 800s are actually quite nice . Most of the issues seem to come with lower priced amps. They have high end products endow end ones. Their reissue amps are great but their more modern amps and budget amps are not so good sometimes . Although I have a dsl 5cr that sounds killer through extension cabs but when played through the stock 10 inch speaker it sounds not so great . A closed back cab with 12 inch speaker improves the amp drastically. Of all the modern marshall outisde of the reissues the closest I got to vintage marshall tone was the dsl 5cr through a closed back extension cab with 12 inch speakers. A les Paul with paf style pickups through the dsl 5 with an extension cab with a greenback reissue or g12h30 heritage does a very convincing lower volume early 70s Marshall tone . I have a dsl 40cr which I think is pretty decent but does not do the classic marhsall thing as good as the dsl 5 . I had a 20 watt Marshall mini jubilee and I basically hated that amp and got rid of it . I thought both the 40watt and 5watt dsl blew ot away for classic marshall tone I have yet to hear a marhsall with a built in overdrive channel that matches the sound of a cranked up single channel vintage Marshall or single channel reiisue .. The dsl 5cr overdrive channel is about the best I have found in a marshall .
I so appreciate your honesty Elmo that’s why I watch your videos and will continue to watch them and recommend all guitar players watch your videos although you’re not God you are a great guitar player
I appreciate that!
Thanx Elmo... Not that I have ever considered a Marshall Origin, but it's refreshing to see a review with 100% HONESTY and not some paid out of work musician giving bad advice!!!
Thanks! Much appreciated :)
Modded my Origin 5 combo to a 10 inch Celestion speaker and it really opened the amp up. Also changed the tubes over to EHX.
@@iand47 I cut a new 1/2" plywood speaker front and installed a Celestion Ten 30 speaker. Had to mount speaker to outside and upgrade the speaker grill cloth. Totally different amp now.
You may as well have saved for a better amp
@@StratsRUs already sold it and made a profit.
I may have the worse ears in the planet, but I liked what I heard in some segments of the video. I have an Origin 20 head, and I absolutely love this amp in combination with my pedals. It has been a long trip though. I did not enjoyed the Origin until I began to crank the master all the way up, and to control the volume with the pre-amp gain knob. I do that trick with the three outputs, low, middle and high; and they all sound excellent "to my ears". Although I hesitate you still have the amp, you may try that trick. Best Regards and nice videos.
Thanks for your honest opinion, I am looking for classic Marshall sounds but in a 30 watt or under and this helped
Roland Cube for me thanks , nice playing as usual sir .
Me too. And thanks :)
Thank you for your honest opinion on this amp. I have the Origin 50 and I think it sounds ok but not great. It's sounds a little nasal and doesn't cut through. I turn up the highs and presence and turn the "tilt" pot to 10 and pull boost to get a decent english Marshall bite out of it. But it really doesn't compare to my Marshall JCM800 Master Volume Head. The Origin 50 sounds good for what it costs but don't use it with a cheap speaker cab otherwise all is lost.
I know some influencers make big bucks to promote crappy products these days. I’ve purchased a few things given multiple glowing reviews and the joy gets sucked out when I plugged it in. But I usually blame myself. I didn’t hook it up right or my settings were off. It’s my speaker! That’s it…So I look for a speaker review from the same people that gave glowing reviews of the crap I just paid for! I know sound is subjective. Hell, some people probably like the sound of a jackhammer. I think finding people who will pass up free gear and money to push crap are getting very rare. Thank you for your honesty. You keep the big guys looking over their shoulder after the put out crap.
It's a shame it doesn't sound good, but I'm glad you aren't afraid to put a negative opinion out there if it's deserved. If you hid your true throughts and someone bought this thing based on your video you'd feel like shit. Kudos to you Elmo on keeping it real. I clicked this video hoping to like it as a bedroom plexi sound, but I guess I'll stick with my Marshall Class 5 and an attenuator (which still isn't perfect)
Thanks! Yeah, it's a shame :(
Thanks for your honest review 🌹❤️
My pleasure 😊
Bought one. Played old acdc on it
Jailbreak- down payment blues and it sounds like that. Clean like malcolm y. Use it for what its for (at home). Not for what you think you and your amp shound do ...
Dont think of it as if its a fender twin and it should sound like boogie Mark 5. Playing old and more clean hard Rock to the Radio is good. If gain, ds1/2 or ts8/9 or rat shoud do.
It doesn't get dirty nicely on its own if loud. effects(boss/mxr) sound good on it.
Would you say you’re happy with your purchase?
@@doodlesasap7894 ,"happy" is a big word. I bought a 335 the other day because i was broken heart💔. Played a lot of acdc malcolm y. stuff on that amp ... that is fun and happyness to me ...
all my boss / ibanez/ mxr Pedals sound good on it. Typical for marshall. A little old school marshall amp, ~200 bucks, that is, two after work evenings in my fav bar, or the other way round, one day selling selfmade lemonade. It is well manufactured and, for a reasonable price☝, worth the money. You wont get an angus y or blackmoore sound out of it on its own, cause it doesnt create enough gain if cranked up. Dist. or overdr. Pedal is mandatory for that. All in all, this miniature is a paradoxon in itself. It reproduces an amplifier that was well known and notorious for its bigness, loudness, gain and headroom ... no such "lil" amp i would consider as "serious". But it isnt a toy either. Its something i can use at home, but it should not be the only and final solution. I just ordered a lot of 5 - 20 watt amps.
To make a long story short: yes i am happy, so far😔🤣
@@marcob.5256 😂 that was a great response lmao. It’s good to hear that you like the amp. I might get it. Thank you for your time. Have a great day
Been wanting to try the 20 watt or 50 watt. They sound good fo me, although I've not played one. I love how simple it is and this amp with an overdrive and maybe a delay and noise gate a d my Morley way and I think I'd be set my friend.
Anyway, thanks for these reviews sir. Very cool.
They're fairly good as long as you don't push them too hard.
Hello everyone! I bought the amp cheap, and before I got it I came here. I was terrified that I bought a piece of unuseful crap, I started looking for other speakers etc. When I received it I was very pleasantly surprised to hear a very good vintage tube amp, kinda towards Vox. After matching it with a Tc Mojo and a reverb it got even better. The idea of changing anything in this amp died fiercely. Before Origin I played some 4x12 100w amps at the studios, also owned Marshall JCM 2x12” combo, Laney Cub 12”, and a blackstar Ht combo. Origin definetely doesnt sound like on this video. Maybe there is something with this particular speaker, that changes the sound after breaking in? Mine is propably over 2 years old. Thank you Elmo for the video, of course respect your opinion. Cheers from Poland.
Cheers!
Thanks for the honest review Elmo! Saved some money.
No problem 👍

I have one and the first thing i did was get a 1x12 cabinet and a carl's 16 ohm Attenuator. I get cranked Marshall goodness at a low volume and it's even better with my TS 808. A little adjustment and it becomes a good amp. I also have the Bugera V5 which is better but my Crate Palomino V8 and V16 are the best little amps. i have too much gear! Can one have too much gear? :D

@@VlrGuitarWorld Been thinking of the Blues Cube.
@@MrPolevaulter Can't wait... hope this settles solid state vs tube ..my no.1 choice right now is the bugera v5..sounds great..
I think fiddling with the controls would help it, it probably has one good setting like most single channel tube amp. But yes I wish they would , if making a 5, 20 ,50 watt amp sell them all with 12" speaker, but then people might realize how much they don't need the 50 watt lol
Cost issue, I imagine. They Need to keep price points relative to wattage. Hate it
I disagree I think Marshall did a fine job for only 299 US price. I own this amp and its damn loud for such a small amp. Sure the speaker could be better but idk how you could ask for a better cheap tube amp.
Personally I think it sounds terrible. The Harley Benton Tube5 and 15 are SOOO much better, as is the Bugera V5 Infinium, Vox AC4, and Marshall DSL5. Some of those cost a bit more, some less than the Origin.
@@MrPolevaulter Ya I get that it might just be a case of poor speaker choices for your playing style aka Stratocaster mainly clean. I run my amp with a Tony Iommi Custom SG and a Turbo Tube Screamer and it sounds good. Is it as good as my DSL40CR no. Is it good for the price yes.
Very very nearly pulled the trigger on one of these and so glad I didn’t on the strength of this review! Wish Marshall would stop spending so much time making fridges and get back in the game. :(
The SV20 combo is brilliant though. It does cost quite a bit more however.

Had this amp for about two days and traded it cause it was terrible! Ended up getting the SV20H. Mi
The SV20 is great :)
I just sold mine about a week ago. I could deal with it.
Jeez, that’s mega disappointing. Not surprising though. I liked the Class 5 from back in the day, ended up with a Vox ac4c12 though and was SO happy. What did you guys think of the class 5 from back then?
Haven't tried it.
Class 5 is a killer amp . I normally do not like high output pickups especially the Gibson 500t but I played a les paul classic with a 500t bridge through a class 5 and sounded amazing. The 500t sounded so good and drove the amp hard into killer overdrive. All of my pickups are paf clones or modified pafs but in the case of the class 5 I much preferred the sound higher output pickups when used in the right setting it turn out the 500t is pretty damn good .
I like mine, especially now that it has 8" + 6" Jensen speakers. Meaty crunch tone.
My reasoning was 8+6 is more than 1x10. 😂
My experience with origin 5 was it was either too dull sounding or became too harsh no matter how I adjusted the eq. Beautiful looking amp though. A Marshall Code 25 sounds much better(with the right adjustments) ...The clean sounds kill the origin 5 alone and the crunch sounds are much more like a 'marshall', which I didn't expect from a digital amp. I assumed the origin 5 would be awesome through a speaker cab, but I guess not. It must have some cheap components that ruin the tube sounds
Or you could get a Tube5, which sounds like the proper thing.
Thanks Elmo for trying to point me in the right direction. I once owned a Monoprice 15(laney clone) and it was okay. The amp smelled weird though, like if you can imagine the smell of a rubber fish, that's exactly it lol. The Laney cub is better. I think the Marshall code 25 can be just as useful At Home as those amps and this no worry about some cheap components melting down. But the Code 25 needs the presence(or treble) turned down from the preset. The plexi and jcm presets are fine with humbuckers, but I'm not saying it sounds like a tube amp or could be gigged. I'm just saying I easily found good marshall-esque tone with some tweaking. The digital amp, I believe, can actually come closer to famous tones at lower volumes. It doesn't have a tubey sound anywhere to be found, but hey, at least it doesn't require an external speaker like the Harley Benton or origin 5. Or a pedal for overdrive or delay. Thats a lot for marginally better bedroom sounds
Dying laughing. Being offended stuff.
I couldn't remember if you liked this or not. 🤣
Good review man.. thanks so much.
I really debated between the Origin and DSL.... finally ended up with two DSL's. They are very different sounding amps set side by side. To me, I felt like the Origin was too dirty sounding. It is like I would want just a little more overdrive, and turning it up, seemed to just make it dirtier .... loss of articulation. LOL... as I wrote this, it was just getting to the end of your video, and we came to the same conclusion. It is some crap. But love the DSL.
Yeah, I've liked the DSLs I've tried. Although I have to say I liked the Origin heads as well.
that speaker in that amp is the onl;y thing that made it sound good (your 4x12 cab sounded like garbage)
1:15 Your honesty really got me. xD
Take a chance on it if you have an eq pedal to stick in the loop.
thx! some marshall combos have cheap speakers ;( same with DSL20CR with the 70/80 ...The DSL20 with Greenbacks sounds a lot better!
Yeah, cheap speakers can really destroy a sound.
Hi Elmo :) ! have you ever tried the Marshall class 5 (combo or head) ? Thx for your answer.
As usually, nice video and good review. By the way, i confirm the origin is terrible :/ !
No, I haven't. Would be interesting to try one though.
I had one was not bad at low vol and i mean low vol for home use on low attenuation but yup not good at all i got a 12 inch Marshall cab for it was WORSE so didnt keep the cab and sold the Marshal very fast indeed honestly the Fender Frontman 20 G is a far better tone and thats saying something !!
This is a really nice amp.... But only when it's cranked to 10. Perfect for getting killer feedback in the living room!
I’m very happy that I looked at this video instead if buying one. Saved me some money, thank you Elmo 🥳

Its more expensive but the DSL 5 smokes the 5 watt origin and its easier to get great classic marhsall tones at lower volume. The 5 watt origin in my experience does not sound as good as the bigger ones . The only origin I thought really sounded good was the 50 watter
Agreed, just terrible. Gotta say I've been enjoying the DSL40CR though. I've also read there are heat issues with the Origins because of valve proximity to the PCB.
That doesn't sound good.
Hello Elmo
Wouldn’t it be interesting to connect Harley Benton 5 to the speaker inside the Marshall Origin 5C? HB is supposed to have a Celestion Super 8 (Discontinued?) and the Marshall a Celestion Eight 15. Is there a major difference between these speakers?
I think its a good sugestion!

Can you please review Marshall origin 20 or 50 combo version? This 5 watt sounds so horrible,, not just you, same with all other reviewers. Thte 20w uses celestion V type junior,, while 50w uses celestion midnight 60. So both sounds different
I might at some point.
What about the 20w combo?
Elmo This Guy! I have an older Epiphone Galaxy 25, made in Korea, that puts most of these cheaper amps to shame. EL84 based. Hummed like crazy and shrill. Changed out the tubes and wa la. But... how does it compare to a Katana! No amp should ever but ever come with an 8" speaker! Ever!!!
Yeah, the 8" speaker isn't great.
*voila
I use this up in my bedroom to write songs and just noodle around. It sounds great at low volume and much better than my Pro Jr which I think doesn't even sound like a Fender. I'm not a fan of the entire "Hot Rod" series. If you want to wail away like the video get the 20 or 50. If you just need to chill in your music room late at night and work on things, this amp is perfect. I got mine $249.00 new and that's hard to beat.
Cool bananas.

I want a killer small combo amp. This isn't it. I wonder if marshall just doesn't care about their entry level products. They all kind of suck compared to their competitors. It's a shame. They ignored low wattage lunchbox amps for years and opened the market up to other companies that stepped in to fill that void. For the longest time you couldn't get a low wattage Marshall that wasn't entry level garbage. They finally did it last year with the studio vintage and the other two but man they let other companies destroy their market for years before they finally did it. Crazy to me.
Try the Marshall dsl 5 combo .
motorrebell true. The dsl's have been good amps for years. I've only played the 40 watt version and that is a good amp.

Yeah. Pretty much my experience.
My Vox AC4c1 with the 10” speaker sounds phenomenal! Sometimes I whore out a line 6 2x12 amp as an extension cabinet with the Celestion 70/80 speakers. It sounds enormous!!! Loves pedals, actually the tone improves with pedals. What the hell went wrong with this amp?
I don't know. It's weird. I really liked the Vox AC4 C1-12.
"This amp is horse poo because it won't do the one thing I want it to do" (which it was never really designed to do in the first place). Hmmm. Maybe see what else it can do? I've installed a Jensen Mod 8 speaker and switched the first pre-amp valve for a lower gain NOS Mazda ECC81 (12AT7) and it sounds sweet as a nut. Beautiful chiming clean tones, and a really nice bluesy break up. If I want hard rock or thrash metal I'll stick a pedal in front of it, or buy an amp that's designed for the job.
Significantly more expensive in UK. £260-£360. And it's a British company. How does that work?
its because they are made in Vietnam and there are plenty of customs to pay until they reach UK. Btw its 205£ on Thomann

Thanks! In regards to CR7, I won't tell my 10 year old daughter. She's a big fan :D
Well... I was hopping it would sound like a Plexy... Did you tried any 5w combo amp that may sound like a plexy or even something that would be nice to use home? Thanks!
Not really. Some of the best stuff that I've tried are the Harley Benton Tube15, Marsahll SV20C, Bugera V22, Roland Cube series (not all of them though). They're all different and priced really differently.
@@MrPolevaulter I see... Thing is that I want something with low watt, because I could saturate it and have that sweet valve tone... You know, my dream is a Bluesbreaker, but its too powerfull... lol
I'm trading my origin 5 for a blues junior, the origin 5 can't handle a big muff without sounding muddy
No clean headroom.
😂😂🤣 First time I saw you so disappointed with an amp. But thank you for your review about the amp. At least with your review you help many people from wasting their money buying that amp.. yeah THAT AMP. I myself was so shock how it sound ... my impressions was “ Whaaaatt!! The Hell Is That????!!” 🤦♂️
Yeah :D I always want to like a Marshall. With this one I just couldn't.
Elmo, the marshall DSL 40c or cr would be a good choice for someone wanting a valve amp for under $800,i bought the DSL 40c (older model)from sweetwater on a closeout for $400 a few years ago!
I've been thinking of trying out a DSL combo.
Elmo, the newer marshall DSL amps have a added master volume that the older models did not have and also the new models have a different speaker most likely better then the celestion seventy 80 that is in my DSL 40c that can be a little on the bright side.
How do I change the distortion to clean sound without turning the volume control? I have a fx loop with a clean pedal sound. But I can’t change the distortion to clean without turning the volume control…..
Not sure I understand what you mean.
Use the volume on the guitar.
Maybe is the speaker??
Sorry?
@@MrPolevaulter will changing the speaker make the amp sound better?
Are you playing that fast or did you speed up the video? Hard to believe!!
That's me playing. Loads of practice and no social life as a teenager :D
Elmo *J.* Karjalainen? Ha! Nice.
Is it possible to get the great marshall clean sound like the clean channel in the dsl20HR at flat reasonable volumes? :/ I was hoping for this 5c, too bad
Its more expensive but the dsl 5 smokes the origin 5 in all regards . It's got the great cleans you get on the DSL 20 and 40 and in my opinion the overdrive on the DSL 5 is better than the drive on the larger dsl amps but obvious does not have the volume of the other 2. You can get really nice drive tones at low volume with the DSL 5 but the key with the dal 5 is using a closed back extension cab with 12 inch speakers. It's a very different and much better sounding amp when used in this fashion.
No creo q sirva tener un combo valvular q no sea 1 x12 o 2 x12, y de unos 15 20 w, para practicar en casa mejor es uno solido
Marshall Origin series: the marshall amps nobody never asked for or wanted.
:D
Johan Segeborn makes this amp sing (plexi on a budget) ............ you unfortunately don’t. Thanks for the review though 👍🏻
And this is supposed to compete with stuff like a Boss Katana? Hah, it sounds horrendous. Marshall sucks at budget amps. Still remember my AVT50 combo from way back, those distorted tones still haunt me. The older Valvestates like 8080 were pretty cool tho for higher gain stuff for cheap, very low quality build though. Kiitos!
Not sure to be honest on this one, interesting market the small valve amp, but I liking the Blackstar HTR 1 more for home use, but this amp just does not cut for me, I guess I expected more from a Marshall amp would that be fair to say,
The speaker really is shitty, HOWEVER, I have a demo of this amp on my channel through my 2x12 V30 cab and it really sounds good. The amp really gets a nice sound with the volume at 8, really thickens the sound. But yes as a combo, NEVER use anything smaller than a 12inch speaker.
Please make a review of a Fender Bassbreaker 15 :)
Maybe at some point.
Is everyone tone deaf or I am liking the sound.
Probably the built in speaker isn’t good.
Nice to hear a reviewer say something is terrible. It is!!!
I had one of these. Absolutely shocking bad.
Sorry to hear.
El84 is killing the Marshall tone
You mad at les Paul's buddy.les paul and marshall is like pea nut butter.
