    This is the most useful review I've seen of this. Other people don't have a clue how to put a review together for an amp. Endless noodling, twiddling knobs randomly, excessive chit-chat. None of that here. Kudos. Subbed.

    I Got the amp and i think it is a great one.
    Don’ t understand all the fuss about the amp, no 12", no this, no that, not sounding like another one...
    I do not want it to sound like another one.
    You can change the tubes to your liking without a visit to the tech, replace the speaker, it can go out to eternal speakers, has got an attenuator, a boost to make it sound fat, an effects loop, well, you can tweak it and make it sound like you want and it is kind of affordable.
    This amp is for people who seek the breakup / sweet spot without piercing the ears, and want to add pedals on the front to go further or in the loop to drool a bit.
    It is a keeper...

      Hi there ! I take the time to learn how it behaves and reacts.
      Now, some folks "do not have the time", they want it "all and now".Unfortunately, in music, that is not how it works.
      The biggest reward is when you learn your instrument (after all an amp is also one) and know how to deal with its weakness and powers.
      A bit like a singer that has got to deal with a cold but has got to sing live..
      Alas, some people are just conservative folks : not learning something new, they do not want change, gimme that old stuff I know and am used to, etc.
      We got all the amps possible in the world available for our needs.Just find the right one for you.
      I used to have amps with volume and tone (Music Master Bass, Gibson GA5 and GA15, etc...) Low power amps that is.
      Now i have to learn to deal with more buttons with this amp, and I am willing to do that because i want crunch when i play"stronger" and this amp just does that at Low / Mid / High / Level.
      So i actually have a "Thank You Marshall Syndrome", mind you.
      Not everyone's got the needs of yours !
      Take it easy over there.

    I have a 50. These amps are amazing. The only reason I can see as to why they aren't more the rage is that they don't deliver quite what a vintage plexi does but, for the money, they come closer than anything I've played before. And they have that Marshall character.

    just bought this amp im using it for bedroom/apartment practice. This is my first Marshall so i dont really know if it sounds like the amps Marshall was going for or not but i do like the sound, maybe the OD of the amp can get a little fizzy if you crank it , but i love the sound of it mostly clean just starting to break up .im able to play soft and its nice and clean and then hit it a little bit harder and it will start to break up . but if you use any OD and plug a 4x12 cab into it this amp becomes a power house . i love mine.

  • @paulolsen6870

    I've played these in 20 and in 50 watt combos and immediately I think of James Santiago at Voodoo Lab and how he'll take a twead Fender or a Marshall head and running them totally clean, he'll add their pedals like the Giggity and Sparkle Drive and end up nailing a Clapton or EJ tone or even EVH or Andy Summers. This dude is right, this is a great pedal platform. If you expect a Marshall stack tone from these you'll be disappointed. Basically, if you hate these amps, you probably are tone deaf and have zero imagination or artistry.

      It appears to sound like bone tone qualities like it has more control than your typical marshall by the intensity you play it less mush nice sounding on the phone witch generally means it's a gas to play inspiring not murky bet a Seymour Duncan's pickup booster pedal is all you need to push it without losing any of the nice tone I'm hearing I'd buy 2 of each if I had the cake or 2 50s 2 tweed baseman's.

    Got the 50w combo and I really dig it but... I’m going to put some better tubes in it and a 65w creamback. Not a fan of the stock speaker but some people like it. I had a DSL 40 and it had much better cleans than the origin but I wasn’t using to drive channels and wanted a single channel so here I am. The price is killer for anyone that wants a Marshall with no BS. Takes pedals well and the effects loop doesn’t suck, what more could you ask for? Loud enough to gig and quiet enough for the house, although, the lowest power mode is a bit thin. I give it 2 🤘🏻🤘🏻 up! Thanks for not playing like you trying to impress your date Leon! So tired of reviews where people are more concerned with showing off rather than actually showing how the amp works/sounds. It’s hard for us rhythm players who don’t “noodle” much to find decent reviews in the way I’d play it. Cudos bruv!!

    Sounds great! Sounds fantastic with pedals! I think that some people aren't realizing that this amp is not designed to be a competitor with the DSL or JVM series, or other modern voiced amps. This is definitely a full spectrum, vintage voiced amp, based upon their amps from the '60s. It's not an exact clone of a JTM or a "Plexi", but a kindred spirit, taking a little from each amp from that era. Although I do think that it is a mistake that Marshall is putting a 10" speaker in the 20 watter. I look forward to trying out the 20c and 50c at my local music store in early June.

    • @LeonTodd
      @LeonTodd  6 років тому +9

      It seems the 20C is aimed at the part of the market that would usually use a Fender or Vox with a bunch of pedals. It's definitely a unique take on the Marshall thing and reminds me a bit of the 1974X combo, which is one of the best Marshall's I've ever played.

      yeah, I do agree in regards to speaker choice. a 25 watt greenback , 12" would , to me, be a much more logical choice. Their choice may be simply to keep it more affordable. I dunno. I would definitely like to hear this with a 12" greeny.

      10” speakers are fine and sound great. This video they sounds great. I have a Fender pro junior iv with a 10” and I love it so I suspect Marshall Is muscling in on the Fender market. Also if you look back at Marshall’s history when it made a Fender clone with the Blues Breaker amp and that opens the door to kick off rock blues music which eventually led to metal so don’t be quick to judge.
      Also Adrian Emsley of Orange 🍊 amps likes the sound of 10” and he knows a thing or 2 about good tone being the designer of the industry standard tiny terror lunch box amp.
      With 10” It’s a different flavour that’s all of course there’s going to be a bit less bass but isn’t that the job of the bass player to do bass.
      Have fun now 😎

    Been playing for over 30 years, the only other Marshall I’ve ever owned was a Lead 12 stack I didn’t know how to use. I’ve had a variety of Fender amps, from a Princeton Chorus to a Silverface Twin Reverb That sounded like God but was way too loud to be practical, to a Mustang 3 (that I happen to really like), plus a few oddball rigs like a Crate PowerBlock into an 80’s Randall 4x12, a Peaver Rage with a homemade 4x8 cab, and God knows how many other makeshift rigs. I’ve found a lot of really cool sounds I liked over the years, but I’ve never had the vintage Marshall JTM/Plexi tone, not least of which because of the same need to be loud like the Twin.
    Finally pulled the trigger on one of these because they seem to tick all the tone boxes at a price I’m willing to pay and a volume level that works for my living situation. I’m really really excited for it to get here!

    Hey Leon! Found your channel by searching for Origin amp reviews - and I gotta say that it’s definitely the best one out there. Most of the reviews I’ve viewed have managed to make the 20 and 50 combos sound really crappy, largely by failing to come to terms with how the “Tilt” and EQ pots work and so failing to dial them in properly. Yours really brings out the character of this amp. It’s not intended to be a high-gain metal machine and, if that’s what you want, then go check out the new PRS Tremonti 15-watt lunchbox head! But the old Marshall amps that the Origin series is channelling weren’t particularly high-gain monsters either. I do get the criticism that this 20 combo should come with a 12-inch speaker, which is why I’m planning to get the head and run it through a G12H-75 loaded cab. But the range of tones you’ve managed to dial up hear at last convinces me I’ll not be disappointed!

    I did crank my Laney VC-30 up to 8.5 and wow it had sweet power tube clipping the highs perfectly and had the best R&R chords ive heard live !
    These amps transform when cranked with the master volume , some go into mud and some are just awesome !
    I heard a recorded video outside of a ball game National anthem on a Rebel 20 amp cranked with single coils , oh my it had harmonics in the lower notes I have never heard before !
    What single notes can do blew me away on that Rebel 20 cranked , but you have to keep the preamp gain just high enough to push the power tubes in that OD breakup !
    Rare you hear power tubes overdriving !
    Its loud for real , even with the gain on 5.5 !

    This series of amps is really divisive. It also has one of the most inconsistent representations of its sound over UA-cam. One video it sounds so bright it's like someone taking an icepick to my ear drum, but in another video it will sound woolly like they've maxed the gain and left the bass on 10. Others (like this one) make it sound great (to me). I have no idea what to actually expect from these amps in person.
    What I will say though is that from looking at the comments, plenty of people seem to have missed the fact that the most commonly referenced amp as far as its sound goes is the JTM45/Bluesbreaker. In the videos where it sounds good, they've captured that vibe pretty well. Too many people seem to think that vintage Marshall sound like a Friedman BE but they just don't. They also seem to overlook that many players boosted their amps with stuff like treble boosters or played fuzz pedals into them for high gain stuff. I've seen a few comments from people that have actually owned vintage Marshalls and they've said Marshall nailed it.
    If this video actually represents it well, that's the sort of sound I'm after, although I'd be looking at the 50 for more headroom as a pedal platform and the larger speaker.

    • @grahamcollins2350

      I played the 5 watt one yesterday and I dug it. I own a 79 JMP and I used to own a 68 Champ. I know what a 5 watt amp with an 8" is capable of, which is why I tested the 5w Origin. Everybody else seems to want to dog it in reviews. I dunno but it seemed perfect for a recording studio or apartment amp.

    • @napalmhardcore
      @napalmhardcore 6 років тому

      My only problem with the 5 is the 8" speaker hasn't sounded that great at higher gain/volume settings on the demos I've heard. I quite liked some of the lower gain/volume sounds, but I didn't find it quite as musical as some small amps are when cranked. The speaker didn't sound happy but not in a good way. As stated though, the quality from recording to recording can be very inconsistent. It's possible I've just not heard it captured well when dimed.

    • @grahamcollins2350
      @grahamcollins2350 6 років тому

      Two things; A) The amp has a 16 ohm out, so it can drive whatever, and B) even 8" speakers need an extensive break-in period. Nothing sounds good on UA-cam.

    • @napalmhardcore
      @napalmhardcore 6 років тому

      It would be cool to hear a demo of one with a well broken in speaker. I do like the small amp sound recorded. I've just not heard a great example of it with this amp yet on UA-cam. I've also tried to find video of someone running it through a larger cab but haven't succeeded yet. I'd really like to hear it through a 2x12 or 4x12 both open and closed back.

    I’m looking for that superlead or even jtm45 sound at lower less face melting levels. Interestingly I have an empty bluesbreaker 2x12 combo that I am hoping to retrofit with the guts of an origin 20c if I can find one cheap enough. What are your thoughts on this conversion and do you think it would be an improvement over the 10” (even if the 10” had a decent speaker change) also I haven’t yet seen one in the flesh and am wondering if the control panel is the same length and width as the jtm45/bluesbreaker. Random af questions I know but your input would be greatly appreciated. Cheers legend.

      That's a fair comparison to make; detail and body on the VM work like high treble/normal on a jumpered JTM/Plexi and Tilt pretty much does that on the origin. The open back cab and 10 inch speaker are a huge factor in the overall tone on the combo obviously, but they do compare well overall.

    Sorry guys, I´ve been a marshall player since the early eighties and been looking for THAT vintage tone in a smaller and lower powered amp since the early nineties.
    Have I found it?
    Yes.
    The Peavey Windsor Studio.
    Upgrade tubes/valves, upgrade speaker, upgrade output transformer if you feel you have to ( and you´re especially anal-retentive about such things), do whatever you like to it and it will love you for it and ask for more spank.
    My favourite amp is still my early 90s Marshall 30th. Ann. amp,- love it forever, but all of these small wanna be Plexis or wanna be Modern Vintages ( which by the way is a GREAT amp - even for metal ) simple don´t cut it.
    The Peavey Windsor have them all beat.
    It just doesn´t say Marshall on the tin,- so I guess it doesn´t count.

To me the Origin is an affordable JTM/Plexi style amp designed to take pedals where the VM is like a Plexi with all the cool mods already installed.

      Leon Todd thanks for the quick reply man, its a tough call they seem pretty similar. I definitely want some gain on tap, Im into the higher gain plexi tones into jmp or 800 territory, so it sounds like my intuition was right and Im gonna have to go with the VM... Or maybe eventually both 😁

      Leon Todd picked up a VM NOT DISSAPOINTED!! That thing is incredible man, pretty much two amps in one!

      So stoked to hear! The VM is a gorgeous amp, and as you said it's like two amps in one :)

      Yeah they can, it's just most people associate Marshall's with crunchy tones.

      @@LeonTodd ohh.. i get it, people like the break up point on the marshall which is good i assume ( i still dont have chance to try amp directly), if its good for clean i might get a little calm haha... Thankyou for the answer, well playing style and techniques Leon!
