God, who sings like this today? Who CAN sing like this today? When Ronnie Spector sings, you know it's her and nobody else. There are only a few performers like that today. As a native New Yorker, it's great to see her doing this tune on Top Of The Pops. Just goes to show that a little New York goes a long way, even in London!
Her voice is just out of this world. Say good by to Hollywood, the beginning of the end. Even back in 1977 people saw it coming. Today Hollywood is worth crap. Everything is coming back east again.
Someone in the late sixties should of had serios words with Phil Spector for preventing this most unique person from recording and performing. Everything about her is interesting. Really is a bright light. Ta for uploading this.
This is a great live performance! Ronnie's voice is in fine form here, and the cameras did a great job of covering her facial expressions-love the wink at 0:35! Ronnie's emotive voice and stage presence are what made her legendary and that's something P. Spector can never lay claim to or take away. "Say Goodbye to Hollywood" is a great song and the BBC Orchestra takes nothing away from this performance. I've added this one to my favorites!
I read her autobiography. This was the point where she was really strung up on alcohol and depression. The late seventies were a low point for her until later in the eighties when she became remarried and found herself again.
A top singer and performer. Mr. Joel perceived this song as a tribute to Phil Spector's Wall of Sound and, of course, Ronnie was THE perfect singer. Dig the way she blinks her right eye at 0:35... - what a sweetie ;)
Ronnie sings "You mean so much to me" on (I think) the album "I Don't Want to Go Home", by Southside Johnny and the Ashbury Dukes... its simply spellbinding. She is a tremendous vocalist.
The inspiration for Amy Winehouse's hair and eyeliner ideas, the fabulous Ronnie Spector is the undisputed First Lady of girl groups. Married to Wall Of Sound weirdo Phil Spector, her squeaky but soulful voice was packed with personality. Ronnie covered this 1967 Billy Joel track in '77 with sax from the late, great Clarence Clemons.
Ronnie is a star, but would have been a massive star, in the same league as Cher etc,if Phil Spector had not been so possesive with her!Check out her CD, Last of the Rock Stars, superb!!!!!
If anyone has the E Street Band backed original, plz plz plz post it... This still rocks though, but sweet lord, the original is rock n roll heaven. Props to Billy Joel for writing it.
Yes Sadako.. It was released as by Ronnie Spector and The E Street Band on Epic records in 77.. It's quite a rare 45. WABC77 has it posted.. type it in the search bar
I just listened to her segment on the podcast Blood on the Tracks. Is this when they were attempting a comeback and she recorded George Harrison’s “Buy some, try some”?
Lovely Ronnie Spector. Suspenders look great very much. It is the very agreeable track with which the head family reverse-covered the song of the "Be My Baby" style which Billy Joel just reproduced with "the music of the attic" and with which important figures respected each other truly. It is a favorite number. Such original music was made.
I remember she also performed it live on the David Essex Show around the same time - I think that was the full version, but I didn't have video facilities back then. Maybe someone else did.......?
Meat Loaf's "You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth," Alan Parsons Project's "Don't Answer Me," some of Springsteen and the E-Street Band's epic tracks and this one. Somebody's got to try doing a record with that Spector sound on occasion, although I haven't noticed any attempts recently.
I saw her do this a a special guest performer with Southside johnny in Cleveland municipal stadium She KILLED IT! ON E OF THE MOST MEMORABLE SHOWS TO DATE.

She has the most beautiful voice out of anyone I have ever heard. She is music
Nice to hear her voice free of Spectre's drenching studio harmonies. She is/was a major talent
Her voice is just out of this world.
Say good by to Hollywood, the beginning of the end. Even back in 1977 people saw it coming. Today Hollywood is worth crap. Everything is coming back east again.
Fell in love with that voice in 1963, Ronnie "Be My Baby" for ever (just a dream)
I agree

This world could use a few more Ronnie's
BRILLIANT POST FROM A GREAT SINGER
Ronnie no one does a song like you, love ya!!
I read her autobiography. This was the point where she was really strung up on alcohol and depression. The late seventies were a low point for her until later in the eighties when she became remarried and found herself again.

Ronnie, love you, a true legend.
such a unique great voice ........
To bad Ronnie didn´t get more chances to do songs like this in the 70s and 80s
A top singer and performer.

With the late great Clarence Clemons on sax!

Jim G Very well said!
The entire E Street Band are on this song...not just the Big Man
Ronnie still looks amazing
I love this song and Ronnie's version so much better than Billy's.
a beautiful girl like her is what made me want to stay in NYC when I was a teen in early 1990s
What a precious sweet jewel she is.
Love ya Ronnie......💙
Pure R&R VOICE
his voice never change!!
Amazing she can sing anything.
I saw her in concert at the Ritz in the early 1980s. I got 2 kisses from her.
You can tell it's the E Street Band backing her!
Billy Joel has said her version of "Be My Baby" was the inspiration for this song
Ronnie is a star, but would have been a massive star, in the same league as Cher etc,if Phil Spector had not been so possesive with her!Check out her CD, Last of the Rock Stars, superb!!!!!

I wish Morrissey would listen to this and come back and live in the UK.
yes, you can find the full 45 version, also on you tube. This version here was a (London) studio version. Shorter, but not bad. Especially Ronnie....
Yes this is very nice.
Tolle Stimme, klasse

Love herah. #MyBaybayah 🎶

Lovely Ronnie Spector.
Suspenders look great very much.

@sirtone31 I just saw her in Manhattan promoting her new Christmas album, she's doing great!
Like the way she sings "troub-BA-dours"
+1, adorable
I remember she also performed it live on the David Essex Show around the same time - I think that was the full version, but I didn't have video facilities back then. Maybe someone else did.......?
@bamatommy actually it was in the 70's wasn't it cuz i remember it in a show in 77
Great! Check out Ronnie's performance of this song from 2002 in the live concert I uploaded.
Is there a released full version that you know of?
I really like watching this. She is wonderful. Why she allowed herself to be corralled by that freak is beyond me. I guess that's love for ya.
Great song! Ronnie, I'll be your fast gun anytime!
@bamatommy He wrote it and released his version in 1976.
she winked at me!
@bamatommy billy didn't 'do' a version !! it's his song and from the late 70's.
I always liked Nigel Olson's version better, but since I can't find a video of his, this is good.
Real singing......take that all the rest.....
Just like little Ronnie said.. Just like Ronnie said..
shes so beautiful and I love the wink at :34
I saw her do this a a special guest performer with Southside johnny in Cleveland municipal stadium She KILLED IT! ON E OF THE MOST MEMORABLE SHOWS TO DATE.
The unedited version is here: ua-cam.com/video/VKBDVJXNtBY/v-deo.html
even with the crappy TV arrangement, it reminds me of what a pity it is that Ronnie's version isn't more easily available...
Be my little baby
Suspenders?
Ronnie Spector grew up in Spanish Harlem.
cute
one was her sister and the other her cousin
Damn, she's really more attractive than I knew.
I thought Billy Joel wrote this song as a tribute to Ronnie Spector.......oh hold on the caption just said that.
I was at Columbia studios the day she recorded this. The E Street band played on the track.
Billy Joel did a good version of this in the 80's.
It's actually a Billy Joel song from 1976. he wrote it with Ronnie Spector's voice and the style of Be my baby in mind.
I'M JOHNNY
Great and unique....even if she is not a kind of "regular beauty" she is very hot...damn it.....
