Also, the book at the opening is Loving: A Photographic History of Men in Love 1850s-1950s.
Book at 10:32 is Surrender Your Sons by Adam Sass, a thriller about Connor, who is sent to a conversion camp by his mother and their Reverend.

I had a military lover and he was blown to bits by our forces in Nam in '71. No sorry, no widower's compo, nada. Two weeks earlier our place was raided in FW. I once worked w/ haters at UT/Austin where I was literally lectured about keeping that 'queer shit' to myself and I lectured the boss and was told I was fired. Again and again it happened til haters killed my dog and cat and smashed my place with big stones and burned it down. I lived on the street and moved to NZ with help from the Sheep that Roared, PM David Lange. O used to talk with Kathy Cronkite (Walter's daughter) about HIV as an equal opp pathogen and human rights and homosexual pairs in Nature. Now we know Jesus and John were ;pvers, and Gandhi. Love you

Hey Zach and Alister, we're the authors of the book you just received, Hugh and Neal. We love seeing our book in such a wonderful, loving, home. We wish you both continued happiness as your journey through life and love continues. And, Zach, thank you for clarifying something for us. At the end of the wonderful movie, "Alex Strangelove", we always wondered whether the short clips of people telling their coming out stories were real people, or good actors. We now know that at least the first one, you, is real. As soon as your coming out video started playing at the end of this post, we recognized it immediately. Not by your face so much, but from your voice - and your accent. We're both from Texas too. Hearing that accent, it felt like being back home:)

**edit: I don’t want the point to get foggy here. THIS is all I want y’all to take away from this. There shouldn’t be arguing.
Neither of us discussed our political beliefs. I have before, but it just wasn’t in this video because we didn’t go into it. Simple as that. Alastair recounted what THE BARBER HERSELF reasoned why she’s voting for Trump. Her words, and she was very clear. Don’t like it? Take it up with her. I didn’t ask for any Trump info, folks. What A and I discussed was the clear prejudice he faced and how no one should have to deal with that. I believe in God. In my own experience with religion, I have found I am much more centered having a direct relationship with Him than I ever was going through any sort of organized middle man. However, I hold no prejudice against religion. What I do take issue with is people who use religion as a justification for hatred and bigotry. It’s unacceptable. Now, Alastair works long hours daily at a very high stress job. Having to deal with that barber at the end of an already shitty day was a little much for him, and he needed a moment to decompress. Fuck any of y’all who take issue with that. Find a heart. He’s human. That’s the message.

@Sally Vee Totally welcome your view. Speak for what you believe in. I have a general distrust for politicians and their voting histories that I refuse to excuse any of them from criticism. Both sides. Too many politicians go with the wind and current popular opinion for career and monetary benefit that I have a hard time looking the other way. There’s just too much hypocrisy.

    • @italianboy2005
      @italianboy2005 3 роки тому +11

Neither of u said anything political, but Alastair was right to be upset over the barber's homophobic remarks. My issue was not so much political as her using Christianity to justify her hate. Jesus hated no one. I am Catholic & go to church every Sunday & I stay in the church because I believe it's the route to Salvation, but also to get in to change. If all the gay Catholics & Allies left, u would just have a church with people like Alastair's barber. We have a lot of haters in our church & they are very vocal, but we have a Pope who recently said "Pope Francis told a group of parents of L.G.B.T. children yesterday that “God loves your children as they are” and “the church loves your children as they are because they are children of God.”
& who has backed "Civil Unions" & uses the word Gay which is not used in the church. He has flipped the church on its ear & angered the conservatives. This is where I am fighting for normalcy for the LGBT Community in the church to gain acceptance.
Matthew Shepard radicalized me. Hearing that with gay couples in New York, before gay marriage was legalized, the older one of the couple would legally adopt the younger one, so they would have the same rights as family members to be with their loved one in the hospital or to inherit the house they shared., that radicalized me.
So we fight for tolerance, equality & acceptance in our own way, you by your VLOGS, which are a blessing & me by trying to make my church, which has many flaws, better.
I will get off my soapbox, let the criticism begin.

I am 65 years old gay man. Growing up in the 60’s and 70’s, I knew I was different, but couldn’t identify how it was. I was sent to Catholic school for 5 years. No I wasn’t accosted by the priests. Great fully, I was too gay for the priests. They wanted the butch little boys and that wasn’t me. The nuns thought I was “cute”.
When I started junior high I went to public schools and was immediately bullied. Couldn’t figure out why. I was teased and threatened by my family. My parents would see gays on tv Liberace, George Hamilton, Jerry vale and others and make such hateful things about them that I knew I have to hide who I am, but I was never able to hide it. I turned to alcohol at age 18. I ended up a daily drunk. Was for many years until a dear friend and drinking buddy was brutally honest. She called me out on it which sent me into a panic. She kicked my ass and when I shared with other friends what she said they were so happy. I found so much trust, and support that within a month I put the booze down and have not had another drink for 27 years. The lady who gave me the truth passed away last October at the age of 58. I will always owe her a debt.
I have just seen your post and I am so overwhelmed with joy and gratitude. I will be looking back in time to find your beginning posts. Thank you for you. I still have not persued a relationship and due to health reasons don’t know that I will. Just know that what you are doing is so positive that I know you are giving other questioning young teens courage. Please keep doing what you are doing. I just instantly love you both. You are REAL! Being a lot closer to 70 than to 60, I have been watching your videos for a few years now. I love and am very impressed with the efforts you put into videos. I am also quite touched by the two of you and how you interact with each other and the world. I am old enough to recall when it was illegal for two men or two women to have a loving relationship. Keep doing what you are doing. The struggle started long before I was born and it will continue long after I am gone.
Being heterosexual is the norm and as such, it is the assumption whenever people encounter other people. But it doesn't mean that we have to simply accept 2nd class status. It is important to speak out where it is necessary to do so. For example, in the case of the hairstylist, if that person had spoken in this fashion to me, I would have waited until the haircut was done and then politely explained that I would not ben returning since I was unable to patronize a person who considered it appropriate to attack me as a person and deny me the same basic human rights of any other human being simply because I have a husband and not a wife.
Be proud of who you are and how you treat others, as well as how you treat each other. You are both fine young men and may you have a wonderful life together.

The shots are beautiful. The story is beautiful. The message is beautiful. I'm glad to be here for the ride.

You really are living the dream of many gay men. I showed my older friend (60ish years old) your channel. When I told him you two were married his response was "When I was a kid I played with my younger brothers toys and had GI Joe fall in love with a Cowboy... who knew Gi Joe would marry a cowboy years later for real."... you are living a life gay people could only imagine and never think it would really happen. Great big bear hugs.

Well there's a lot going on there. Firstly, please explain to this person that those two weeks of vacation bible school weren't supposed to spread out forty years. Secondly, you should mention that his favorite pastor's clever and calculated omission of the Good News of Jesus Christ to suit the taste of his audience is as good as a lie. "Love covers a multitude of sin" (for ALL of us). Your client hasn't learned in all of his years of church attendance the salient truth that the gospel is Grace based and not sin based. What a dark and nasty view of the world he has! When you say Grace you are saying someone's name. What is one of Zach's favorite sayings? "You do you & let everyone else do themselves".

Representation in literature is SO important. Whether society likes to acknowledge us or not, LGTBQ+ people are a part of the world. I think a lot of LGBT people can relate to the situation Alister encountered with the barber, myself included. Same goes for gyms, auto mechanic shops, and so much more. So sorry that happened to you, thanks for sharing that experience with us; love and blessings to yall!

This comment is specifically directed at Alastair and Zach. (Not looking for replies from anyone else.) Concerning the issue at the salon... Firstly, I was saddened to listen to your experience. I really felt the hurt in your voice. I’m sorry you had to go through that. Life is hard sometimes, huh?
I hear your gut reaction, and I understand it. You’d be completely justified to never grace their business again. “Grace”. That’s a word filled with meaning. Undeserved, unmerited favor, thats the true definition of the word. Your barber doesn’t “deserve” your forgiveness. They haven’t done anything to “merit” it. I wonder how she/he’d react if you gave them it anyways. What if you went back? What if you continued to go back? What if you extended them kindness and showed them who you were? What if you showed them the good man you are?
I wonder if in so doing you could make a difference in one life; In one persons ignorance. Grace is a beautiful thing. It’s one of my favorite things. Grace has the ability to soften even the hardest hearts and build a bridge where there once was none.
We want change. We want normalization of homosexuality. We want acceptance. I believe we get it by these small actions. Sure, it’s only one person, but everyone has the ability to make a ripple of change. A hand must be extended by one side or the other. Unity is achieved in these small acts. Would you consider it?
All the best to you beautiful boys. ☺️
    -Shawn

From the first generation that was finally able to live openly myself it is wonderful to see younger people understanding what those who went before went through to make a life open and free possible. Remember how precious that is, guard it and expand the circle of love to our brothers and sisters around the world who are still forced to hide in the dark.

You guys are just so great together and I always love your message! And you are an inspiration to everyone who will hear that message. I simply don't understand why some people who claim to be Christians actually don't seem to get the meaning of the real message of Christ...The message of love for all people regardless of whether or not they agree with you on everything. My Mother always said, "life would be pretty dull if we were all the same." And she was so right about that! There's room enough in this world for all kinds of people. If we would all learn to let people just be themselves, I think everyone would be a lot better off.
You really had me wondering what you two were up to when you said you were partnering with Helix...I couldn't believe my ears until I realized you were talking about mattresses! HA!
That book you received looks totally amazing! I'm going to have to see if I can find it. Such a great gift - and so inspiring!
On another note, it looks like you have been having a lot worse weather in your neck of the woods than we have had here in Ohio. We've had a little rain, but it hasn't been anywhere near cold enough to freeze. I sure hope you didn't have much damage with all that ice! That can be some scary stuff!
Sorry I've gone on so long but I just wanted to let you know how appreciated you guys are! Take care.

Duuude, wow, just wow! I first started following you somewhere around the time you were about to graduate high school I believe. I kind of lost track of you not long ago, other interests showing up in the recommended list, etc... but I saw this and you had a tear in my eye shortly after I clicked it. First off, as a retired Navy veteran, let me say how proud I am of your husband. After spending 50 some odd years in the closet, the 'friends of Dorthey' were always there, but the whole 'mental illness' issue kept the fear alive and well in a lot of us. And now he can serve proudly and openly, you go boi. Now about that book. I watched you turn thru some of those pages and as hard as I and my 'friends' had it, they had it so much harder. And the men of color even more so. I am soooo glad that some one your age understands and appreciates the battle so many fought to get us where we are. Some day, someone is going to go through that book and end up on that photo of you and Alastair and I sincerely hope that they have the same sense of appreciation for the battle that you do. Barbers are a dime a dozen, there's one for you out there some where. Haters are gonna hate, nothing we can do about that but love them the way we want to be loved cause in the end, love will always win. Peace out my friend.
P.S, the Firefly tv series and movie were some of my favorite shows, maybe I'll have to read the book too. Ciao Bella
