- The last time Hollywood writers went on strike, it lasted 100 days and reportedly cost the Los Angeles economy $1.5 billion dollars. So, how long could this current strike last? Ellen Stutzman and Danielle Sanchez-Witzel are negotiators from the Writers Guild of America and they join Symone Sanders Townsend to discuss where things stand and what the sticking points are.

UA-cam figured out how to pay content creators but Netflix can’t?
What would be be without stories? I hope that whatever needs to happen to put pencils back into the hands of these writers happens quickly. I wish all the writers the best. I read about these "mini rooms" and it isn't right.

If streaming loses money should writers still get paid?
That’s a question I had. If they want their residuals to be based on the success or failure of the projects they are a part of… MOST projects are failures… so does that mean most wouldn’t hardly get paid residuals?

@Critical ity but how do you define losing money? Remember, streaming is a service. The idea is retain users as well as gain users. In other words, the streaming platform decides whats a "success" or a "failure", unlike tv shows/movies where the number of viewers/tickets sold decide whether its a success or not.
Also, by your logic, no one should be paid. That includes the CEO. You do realize the netflix ceo made over 50 million dollars in 2022. So, yes the writers should be paid even if the show fails
@nishanthpad well, easy. Annual net loss/gain. Revenue - costs = earnings. Earnings > 0 = gain, earnings < 0 = loss. Also, bad form to misrepresent my logic.
Depends of it's really losing money or just not increasing in money. I'm betting the system is so used to under paying its employees that it's a shock when people want to get paid for their work.

If the writing is so bad that actors like Jenna Ortega have to change on the fly to make a hit . The upcoming Babylon 5 already has 90 percent of it likely written by 1 person and while I see the need for 1 maybe 2 writers to pick up the slack from the show runner having 4 union writers being dead weight in production cost is insane . All Josh Weaden shows have about 4 writers . Maybe . By all means give writers better terms in British Columbia, the rest of Canada , England , Spain , Australia and New Zealand. But the crap writers in Hollywood and New York nothing . Film New York in Toronto and Make Hollywood a ghost town . Send procdution companies out of the country and get the best Commonwealth writers money can buy at better terms the the union is asking for . That will prove its the below standard product is responsible for the non negotiation not the terms .

Writers are quite an elite group in the film and television work community already. The fact that their guild is continuing this strike over working “gig to gig” like the rest of us illustrates this. Productions have been slowed or delayed for months over these negotiations and other crew guilds and craftspeople have been out of work because of it. I’m not hearing anything about that.

I don’t really miss any of these writers work, I don’t believe they deserve anymore money or deals, they make plenty already. I like my shows lgbt free anyway. It seems that’s all the garbage they’ve been writing shows around now🙄.

The current TV writing model is archaic, especially in the age of AI. A smart writer will work on developing their own intellectual property, build their own following, then license it to producers.
