- Adam Conover, a writer, comedian, and host of truTV’s ‘Adam Ruins Everything,’ called out Hollywood execs who make $50M to $250M per year in salaries at the same time many TV writers in the business are ‘not able to pay their rent or their mortgages.’
Conover was invited on CNN to discuss day 1 of the WGA writers’ strike, which began on May 2.

I'm noticing a theme here.... Weren't the railroad employees just talking about the same things, how about UPS, longshoreman.... Everyone seems to be underpaid... Except the CEOs... It's time for change.
Yay, let's destroy capitalism
@@fatrat92 massively overpaying CEO's and under paying all other employees has nothing to do with the success of capitalism.
@@fatrat92 unironically yes
Oh the time has long been overdue
@tranniedyke the owners of capital making money in that proportion is how capitalism works, but the CEO is technically an employee. Overpaying the CEO isn't in the shareholders best interest, and paying them in shares of the company is detrimental to the companies long term success.

I don't think that was even the CEO's salray, it was probably just a bonus on top of the already ridiculous sum of money he makes in a year
What's insane is that they think they don't earn enough. Like, the average person could change their life with just 1million and they have hundreds, sometimes thousands, of millions and they don't understand why we're so upset about something so small. They live in different cognitive worlds.

I feel like CEO's jobs could be automated. It aure would save the companies millions of dollars, and eliminate the fewest amount of employees.
Absolutely, a CEO is easily replaced by ChatGPT. Ask it if I should do stock buybacks and lay off employees OR if I should give my current employees a livible wage.
"As an AI language model, I can provide you with some general information and considerations, but ultimately, the decision is up to you as the CEO and depends on various factors and the specific circumstances of your company.
When it comes to stock buybacks and layoffs versus providing employees with a livable wage, there are different perspectives and trade-offs to consider. Here are some key points to keep in mind:
1. Stock Buybacks: Stock buybacks involve a company repurchasing its own shares from the market, which can increase the value of remaining shares and potentially benefit shareholders. This strategy can be seen as a way to return value to shareholders and boost the stock price. However, it can also be viewed as prioritizing short-term gains over long-term investment in the company's growth.
2. Layoffs: Laying off employees can reduce costs in the short term and improve profitability. However, it can have negative consequences for employee morale, productivity, and company reputation. Layoffs should be carefully considered and implemented with sensitivity to the impact on employees and the long-term health of the organization.
3. Livable Wage: Paying employees a livable wage demonstrates a commitment to their well-being and can have positive effects on morale, productivity, and employee retention. It can also enhance the company's reputation and attract high-quality talent. However, increasing wages may require reallocating resources and potentially impacting profitability in the short term.
4. Balancing Stakeholder Interests: As a CEO, you have a responsibility to balance the interests of different stakeholders, including shareholders, employees, customers, and the broader community. Taking a balanced approach that considers the long-term sustainability and success of the company is crucial.
It's worth noting that the optimal approach may differ depending on the specific circumstances of your company, industry, and the values you prioritize as a CEO. Many successful companies aim to strike a balance by investing in their employees' well-being while also pursuing strategies that enhance shareholder value. Ultimately, you may need to consider a combination of approaches that align with your company's values, long-term goals, and the well-being of your employees." - yup, ChatGPT can replace a CEO.
@@evinfuilt omg good job
@@evinfuilt the difference is that A.I. could have the ability to look at consequences, cause n effect, and other evidence and math things out to see that improving things for workers makes things better for the company in the long run. Because it is easier for AI to see past the end of its nose.

"Governments, if they endure, always tend increasingly toward aristocratic forms. No government in history has been known to evade this pattern. And as the aristocracy develops, government tends more and more to act exclusively in the interests of the ruling class - whether that class be hereditary royalty, oligarchs of financial empires, or entrenched bureaucracy.

Insane that billionaire CEOs think they can just keep getting away with this bs
Any personal earnings over $5 million annually should be taxed at 100%. Nobody is going to stop working hard because they can "only" earn $5 million in a year.
Back when the US personal income tax rate for earning over $5 million was taxed at 93% (in the 1970's), American businesses were thriving. It probably had something to do with companies investing their profits into their business and labor force instead of giving unconscionable sums of money to executives.

In the working world theres an old saying, "If you want it your way start your own bussinesss."

The CEO is making $250 million, and if we reallocate $230 million to 11,500 employees’ pay, it leaves him $20 million dollars (still a extreme amount of money) and increases each of these employees pay by $20,000. Of course a fraction of this money would make a substantial difference in each their lives, and the loss would not have much impact on his.

Yep I pay 1/3 of my income to state and federal combined. Federal is 22% while 6-8% is State (hourly so pay fluctuates depending on my overtime). How much does the rich businesses and ceos pay? 0-10% on income tax. Doesnt sound like a fair share to me
Income tax is actually extraordinary high for the Uber rich. They're also the most difficult and expensive to audit, and their accountants know how to make it so costly for the state that the state will actually abandon audits of their assets. How is Adam calling out rich CEOs any different than anyone else calling out the rich actors and writers?
How much did he pay his writers?
Probably a fair amount given the fact hes also in the writers guild
He probably wasn't the one handling payroll, he's an actor/writer. Adam Ruins Everything was produced for TruTV, they were probably the ones responsible for making sure people got paid.
I just pictured someone who sounds like JK Simmons J Jonah Jameson screaming at her producers "Ya goddammit right you career is ruined!"
From my perspective, a change is needed, but I don't really think it should start with the writers. The pay gap fit writers is nothing compared to people who make minimum wage. Let's start with something that helps jobs that matter.
The railroad would have been a good place to start. My dad worked for the railroad, and he made way more in the 80s than he made when he retired in the 2000s.
Doesn't matter where it starts, a lot of industries are being devalued! A lot of striking and unions should become more common, or else the rich will continue to take while the government bends over backwards to their whims!
Rather than telling people not to try improve their own lives by protesting, it might be better to start up new protests and labor stoppages for rail workers? There are already unions for rail workers in fact, so maybe try join them on the picket line
@KangarooKommando no, that's not what I said. Railroaders were striking a year ago, and the federal government literally stopped it because the nation couldn't function without them. My dad was a Railroader. He made way more in the 80s than he made in the 2000s when he retired. I'm sure it's only gotten worse since then.
Anyone is free to strike if they want, no matter how bad an idea it is to strike when their employers are already falling. However, if I'm going to sympathize with anyone, it's not going to be with the most entitled industry in the world.
@@KangarooKommando you are 100% right that the writers have every right to stand up for themselves and that's exactly what they are trying to do.
I don't really feel any obligation towards them though even though I benefit from their work just like you don't need to feel any obligation towards the railroad workers who provide a much more tangible benefit to the common good.
Based on my father's experience as a railroad worker from the 70's into the 2000's... every time new technology comes out it hurts the unions and benefits the companies. I'm not sure the streaming services feel any great pressure to give in to anything right away.
