      @@kingsleyj5874 You are welcome! Getting a tattoo is a decision of wisdom, not of right or wrong.
      Also, God will forgive you when you knowingly and willingly sin. That's not to say that we should go on sinning, that's missing the point. But we should live in fear that if we sin God will not forgive us either.

      Hi Jeff, I chanced upon your blog & YT channel, and I'm learning a lot!
      U mentioned at 2:01+ that culturally today, tattoos are no longer about worship of idols.
      Sorry I beg to differ. I was a Buddhist (Theraveda) before I converted. It is still popular for believers to get mantras/deities tattooed by monks. And the monks will chant upon these tattoos.
      It is called "Sak Yant" and still a form of ritual/false worship.
      Think Angelina Jolie & the Muay Thai boxers.
      Just sharing if you don't mind.

      I have 2 and I plan to get more. I’m the youngest daughter of a Southern Baptist Preacher. My tattoos are in memory of people that I love and miss. I have a tiger lily with a dragonfly, the word Daddy and Romans 8:28. This is for my Daddy. He loved tiger lilies, his Native American heritage believed that the spirit of the one you loved comes and says goodbye in the form of a dragonfly, and Roman’s 8:28, And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to HIS purpose.

    What do you think about worshiping yourself as god? Even if we admit or not we treat our selves as gods in many ways like pretending attention, praises and respect from every one. Think of this, most tattoos are in plain sight so every one can see. There's no good reason for you to do it except proudness.

    Great video! I think your conclusion is so wise, too.
    I actually had an encounter not too long ago where an older Christian absolutely went OFF on someone, on Facebook, for having tattoos. The person who they went off on also wasn't a Christian. I got to thinking, after that experience, about how crazy it was. I mean, this person was hurting the image of Jesus because they think tattoos are wrong. But isn't it more wrong to make Jesus look bad in front of the world? Especially when the people you are pushing away from Jesus don't even have the beginnings of a relationship with Him?
    I think what you said is so true. We need to be focused on what's going to shine Jesus light best, not only on ourselves and our likes/dislikes. Thanks for the video, man!

    It's called justification. Why do so many people want to study the Word to figure out how their actions can come in under the wire as not being sin. We are supposed to live our lives to Honor God. Does getting a tattoo honor God...bring Glory to Him?? NO! Can a tattoo damage your body, YES! Do some research.

    Another point about tattoos is the message it gives that you had to permanently alter what God gave you in order to be happy. So because the Leviticus verse doesn't outright say it's only about pagan worship, and because I know God wants us to appreciate what He's given us, I choose not to tattoo.

    • @RethinkwithJefferyPoor
      @RethinkwithJefferyPoor  4 роки тому +1

      When you read a verse in the Bible you have to understand who it was originally written too. In the case of the Leviticus, we know historically what tattoos were (it's well documented). You are reading this verse with your 21st Century view, but the Bible wasn't written in 2020, and a lot has changed culturally. If we ignore the original context we can make the Bible say pretty much anything we want.
      That's not to say you have to get a tattoo. That'd be a foolish conclusion. For some, a tattoo might negatively affect their relationship with God. And they should avoid them. But that's a personal preference, not a Biblical mandate. The danger is when we force our preferences on others as mandates that the Bible doesn't speak too.

      @@RethinkwithJefferyPoor Regarding spiritual health I believe in serious study of the word of God by using exegesis, isagogics and categories of doctrine. For me changing to 'please what is popular with the modern current world view' does not align with the biblical admonition of 'Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect'. And I think that giving temptation for legalistic Christians to sin and judge others is a stumbling block and not wise. The details of this life are inconsequential but if tattoos are a bone of contention, or have even the appearance of evil why not take the high ground and skip having them?
      I've not found one health benefit to getting a tattoo... to the contrary my former hairdresser passed away with an infection from getting a tattoo.
      For the believer in The Lord Jesus Christ God uses all suffering in this life for blessing. But we do not need to, by our own volitional bad decisions, add additional physical suffering by paying someone one to insert a toxin into our skin. Everything that is put on the the skin and in the body matters for or against health. If anyone reading this has a tattoo realize that tattoos can also be dangerous to remove. Another reason not to encourage others to get them. We are all in the dying process but to avoid unnecessary suffering is honorable because our friends and family suffer with us and ill health can be a big distraction to our mission.

    I actually thought about this quite a bit and I had read your article in the fall of 2019. I really appreciated the scripture references you gave and the context, because CONTEXT IS KING! In the end I got a tattoo on my wrist that says "Coram Deo". It's not something I idolize, not something I needed to be happy but a simple reminder that I am living my WHOLE life before God. I also hope that someone might ask me what it says or what it means. In the end as I debated on whether or not to get a tattoo, I examined the scriptures people "think" refute tattoos biblically and the context. In the end, I decided on 1 Corinthians 10:31. I got the tattoo and I don't feel I dishonored God or my body and I don't regret it!

    I have two tattoos. Today, I regret both of them because they don’t represent who I am today and they mainly stay hidden. However, I find it so weird that Christians argue over this, yet most Christian women I know have their ears pierced. That’s still marking/altering the body. Most women wear some makeup, even if it’s not a lot or they dye their hair. That’s still altering the body, even if not permanently. And, some people got their tattoos before they became Christians or while they were lukewarm Christians. God looks at the heart, not at your outward appearance. We receive new bodies in Christ and our earthly humanly bodies die when we die a physical death. So I say to each’s own. If we are going to condemn tattoos then we also have to condemn all ways that we alter our physical bodies whether permanently or temporarily. And I personally don’t find it offensive as a Christian to see another Christian with a “Christian” themed tattoo.

      I enjoy people's tattoos as an art form. I am almost 60 and considering getting one with my daughter. I have pierced ears, I wear clothing, drive a car. I am enrolled in higher education...let's see, like drums, have sung in harmony, played pool, bowled.. so many things were considered grey areas by the culture at the time but now aren't an anything-area. I think there are so many more interesting things to think about and explore! Tattoos usually have a story behind them and are a great conversation starter.

      It's not about making your body look different it's about harming your body, wich you should treat like a temple. Those women you talk about who pierced there ear didn't listen to the word of God or didn't read there Bible, doesn't mean that all Christians are like that just so you know.

      I don't claim that all Christians are one way or the other. Some are Orthodox, some are Progressive, some are Moderate, and some are Conservative. What I do know is that Jesus died for me, for you, for them. We will all be judged the same. Jesus knows whether we are truly repentant. There are more than just women who do not adhere to biblical principles in today's society.

    The Bible says that everything we do must be for the glory of God, because it is to him that the glory of all good things belongs. So if for you there is nothing wrong with getting a tattoo, then tell me how it glorifies the name of God to have tattoos? Rather, assume that you are doing it for your own personal glory and the desire to please men, and do not come to justify it by using the biblical passages, in my opinion to justify your actions. Satan also quoted from the Bible when he tried to tempt the Lord Jesus Christ in the wilderness. See nothing personal about it, it's just my opinion. 😏

    • @nebiubizuneh3923
      @nebiubizuneh3923 3 роки тому +2

      What if you don’t get a tattoo for the desire to please men?What if the tattoo is to remind yourself of something? You say glorify God in everything you do but even Christians don’t glorify God in everything they do. Is your choice of food to Glorify God? No but you still eat what you prefer to eat. Choice of clothing? No... Did you straighten your hair to Glorify God? No but you did it anyway. This is a hypocritical statement that many Christians make in my opinion. Why can’t a biblical scripture be tattooed to remind you of scripture that deeply hits home to the individual who chooses to get it? How do you know people get tattoos to please men? So what if Satan quoted scripture... so does every pastor in the world. What was the objective of saying Satan quotes scripture?

      Do you have your ears pierced? Putting a hole through your ears is altering your body. Do you dye or curl your hair? That’s altering your body, even if it’s only temporary. There are many ways Christians alter their bodies. Sure they may not be as drastic or as permanent as a tattoo, but it’s still altercation. It could still cause a new Christian to stumble.

I find for myself I find tattoos very confronting and alienating at an emotional level and not in my behavior towards someone. I am very much -"bit why?" I believe that we will all have to answer for all the things we have done in our lives and that includes causing others to sin. Jeffery, do you truly believe your heart of hearts that God really wants us to mark up our body which truly IS His temple! I have asked for forgiveness for all the tattoos I have received in my life and at the same time had each tattoo prayed over in case anything not of God entered in, in the act of receiving each tattoo. In Isaiah 49:16 it shows how God marks His people that way He knows they are His. In the end of days very soon we will all have a huge choice that our very lives will depend on. It will be to decide whether or not we take the mark of the Beast. Again, it signifies *ownership* only in this case, it will be the enemy, or rather it will be the anti-christ who will own you if you choose to take it. So what do we learn from these two examples? We learn that tattoos or "marks" and "markings" signify ownership. So when we mark ourselves are we signifying that God is our ruler or owner? This is a question we all need to really ponder...

      When you read scripture you have to read it in context. That means you read the surrounding verses and look at what it meant to the original audience. When you don't read the Bible in context you can make it say just about anything you want. The examples you gave (Isaiah, Revelation, and 1 Corinthians) are all taken out of context and have nothing to do with tattoos. When we read scripture we need proper exegesis. Why there are so many wacky ideas out there today because so many ignore the context of the Bible.

    • @Jesse-1980
      @Jesse-1980 4 роки тому

      Rethink with Jeffery Poor well regardless if it's taken out of context or not, God said not to defile one's flesh. I would rather honour his Word than not. And this is my choice. What I believe is people idolize their tattoos. Why else would they want to get it engraved on their flesh? This is just my opinion and if you feel that it is a good Godly choice to deliberately mark up God's temple then I really hope and pray that He will appreciate that and honour you for it in paradise. Maybe I'm wrong and you will get many crowns! What I am really saying is we must always constantly strive to do what is most pleasing to God, not ourselves.

    • @Jesse-1980
      @Jesse-1980 4 роки тому

      Tyler Mitchell I don't think it really even matters if you have tats or not. If you aren't saved do you think you will enter God's kingdom?

    • @RethinkwithJefferyPoor
      @RethinkwithJefferyPoor  4 роки тому +1

      @Jesse Defiling defilement of our bodies according to scripture has to do with sexual immorality. Again, just look at the context. The Bible does not define tattoos as a defilement of our body. You might feel that for you a tattoo would hinder your relationship with God. And that's fine, but that's a personal preference, not a scriptural mandate.
      Now, you say that tattoos are an idol. That I partially agree with. An idol is anything that has become more important to us than God. A tattoo could be an idol for someone. But so could a car, a child, a style of clothing, a job, money, sex, power, etc... But just because someone has a tattoo doesn't mean they worship it. Just like someone who has a nice shirt, a pair of earrings, or drives a car doesn't automatically make those an idol.
