- How a motorcycle shift drum works: The shift drum controls three shift forks by a stub that rides in a slot. The slot moves the fork which moves a slider gear. The slider gears has pegs that fall into holes in the driven gear.
The slider gears engage on either side, 3 sliders X 2 sides = 6 gears.
Sometimes if your gears clash, the slots and dogs will round off, this can cause the gear to pop out when you apply torque.
The drum is shifted with a ratchet system operated with your foot.
Im putting my case back together after replacing a broken starter chain in my 85 cb700sc. Thanks for posting this, very interesting.
I'm doing the same thing but 7 years apart haha
That explained it, my shift drums stuck, cheers helpful vid
My bike is gone now but the gears won't change. The forks were bent. 97 nighthawk 750. Good bike. Honda makes a nice riding bike with some power. Really after so large of a motor on any bike that is too much. Which is odd. Never such a thing as too much of anything
Wow so simple. Thanks a lot
That's so cool
Good video man. But what thing is the one that makes that "tiiic" sound each time a gear is geared?
I put my case back together and the transmission sounds like it's clicking when I spin the tire in neutral, any ideas?
whats it cost to replace a deal like that? im looking at an 85 nighthawk that needs a new starter and has a fracture in the shift drum.hes wanting 800 for the bike.think its worth it?
