- Correct Terminology:
output shaft - "counter shaft"
opposite shaft - "main shaft"
sprockets - "gears"
interlocking side teeth - "dogs"
shifting arms - "shift forks"
shifting/sliding type sprocket - "slider"
The engine is from a 1981 Yamaha SR250
Whoever invented that is a genius!
@Firebolt I think he means the engine configuration we just saw. Whoever got it to that point is a genius
@@damnfk063 I invented the keyway.

This has got to be the best and most basic (yet complete) video explaining ANY type of gearbox. Thanks for posting, you've cleared up so much for me!
This is one of the coolest (and most detailed) the i have seen in awhile. It helps because I am rebuilding my YZ125 and I need to know EXACTLY how it works!
This is brilliant. Just stumbled on it to explain how it works to a buddy. Thanks for taking the time.
It hurts to think about the moments when i misused those gears in traffic. Great video. This video link should be in books.
Thanks for the most amazingly calm, clear and precise description and demonstration of a motorcycle selector mechanism and gear train. After occasionally wondering for over 40yrs about the selector mech in particular, it all makes total sense now. Thanks again. Regards Mark in the UK

Your videos are great. There is great detail and you explain the topic in an understandable and logical manner. Please continue to make more videos. I would love to see a carb video, a fuel injector video, a front forks video, a front steering assembly video and so on. You are well appreciated.
What a great video! You couldn't have explained this more clearly. Was kinda hoping you might touch on what happens when you preload the shifter, but this was a fab explanation of the mechanism.
I got math homework due in the morning and I'm watching how a transmission works

good luck man..haha
This demo is so perfect. I had no idea how my trans worked, and was having a problem with it's down shifting from third to second and to first. This was due to my running low on oil and some metal particles started circulating around and causing the problem. It is now shifting fine since I did two oil and filter changes. This took about 600 miles of driving, and so far it's working fine. I would still like some input regarding how the metal pasrticles effected the shifting. Thanks for the excerllent demo. Ron
Nice video, informative. For me it's not so important to understand the different gear ratios and how they figure that but the concept of how it works is explained very well in this presentation. Nice job!
This is the most comprehensive and easy to understand video on the topic. Thank you so much!
I always used to wonder how the gears work in my motorbike. This video explains it completely. Awesome.
Thanks, it helps a lot to understand when you see actuals parts in action.

That was a great demo. I liked being able to see all the parts. My mind still doesn’t quite comprehend how the parts work together to change gears but that is no fault of yours. 🤪
This really helped me appreciate the brilliance of this design. Thank you!
Has to be one of the best explanations/demos on youtube... Thanks man
Outstanding video, thank you for posting it. I didn't understand how the gears worked until now.
Mate, these videos are fantastic. I'm a new rider, and your explanations are brilliant: clear, thorough and interesting!
bonsoir
Very helpful video indeed.
After watching many many videos.... OMG, I am just tired & found out a complete stop here . Thank you so much for this wonderful video which cleared all my misunderstandings. Now, I got this completely. No one & no other demonstrations worked out for me till now.
thank you for having the time to share and explain...people like you make of the world a better place to live
This has to be the best explanation of the bikes transmission, so happy I found it
"The name 'sprocket' applies generally to any wheel upon which radial projections engage a chain passing over it. It is distinguished from a gear in that sprockets are never meshed together directly"
This is the most informative video on motorcycle gearbox that I've watched! Thank you
Just excellent, being working on bikes for years just doing my first bottom end rebuild, this is a priceless video to me , brilliant work Als garage
This is Insanely Educative about how Gears work.. Thanks myte!..
Thank you very much for making this video!
A legend Vikas himself, the question is does he still liking comments?
Excellent explanations, Well done.
Excellent explanation of the transmission. This is very useful video especially for people new in this field. Great work uploaded dud.
I just added a comment. Maybe if more of us comment on my comment and like each other's it will encourage him to make more videos.
You should be a teacher bro. Very easy to learn from this. Cheers!

This video gave me a pretty good perspective of the transmissions in motorcycles. Thanks for the wonderful video!
Thank you very much for making this video! Being able to see the real thing is much easier for me to understand than watching animations.
thank you for taking the time to show it in such a detail.
GREAT video man. . .
I say, this video is far more better than the old one...
Thanks for the knowledge!!!
This is the best demonstration of this that I have seen.
Excellent explanation! Thanks for taking the time and effort for explaining it from different points of view.
The popping together of small levers is there's 2 ways #1 as well as your workshop manual and all motorcycle gearboxes say 1965-2005 are basically the same so you can tell, 4 springs means 8 lever contact points so 8 levers unless they're like scissors, you install all your shafts without tightening then you'll figure out your first spring, basically the thing is the heavier the spring the more robust the lever and springs go around %7 longer than lever arc movement, if you're dismantling a motorcycle gearbox try using a camera you can still get Polaroid cameras taking pictures with each single component you take away then simply start from the last numbered picture even draw things and mark them with permanent markers.
Very informative vid...l now have a better understanding of how the gears work, which before was no understanding at all. Thank you.
VERY GOOD video! Thank you. You made it easy to understand what I thought was the hardest part of the engine to figure out!
The explanation/presentation is good. Adding and using the engineering terms of the parts would have been a plus!
Great video!! Should be required viewing for all motorcycle lovers....you owe it to yourself to understand your machine.
Thanks for making this video, it's more clear than the animation videos, Live demonstration.
amazing video and very clear easy to follow explanation on how this works!!! keep up the great work
bro excellent job. Don't have words to thank you for such information
I can't say that I totally understand what is going on still, but it this a great video that explains alot.
Thank you so much. Great video. great point of view with camera and explaining everything.
Good Demonstration !! Though it takes time to understand the mechanics completely.
The best explanation I've seen so far!
I was very intrigued about how a motorcycle goes from first to neutral. now it seem very simple :)
Great video, many thanks. I'm not getting any gears on Kawi Bayou ATV and this gave me plenty of pointers👍🏻
This video is fantastic. You did a great job explaining everything, thank you!

Bro, you’re incredible. Thanks for explaining this!
First time I'm understanding how motor cycle gear transmission
Working
Awesome videos buddy. Simple yet detailed explanations thank you.
I'm needing help with my bike and this has helped alot (although it's not work that I will be able to do myself)
hi al, is great how you explain, very clear and very precisely, thanks.
I make a question, ¿it´s possibly that a motorcycle gearbox, jumps from the maximum gear, in this case the fourth, to the first gear spontaneously?. Thanks.
greetings from Colombia, south america. :)
Your videos rock! Excellent explanation, great visual support. Keep it up.
I just added a comment. Maybe if more of us comment on my comment and like each other's it will encourage him to make more videos.
Thanks for showing it! Now I know what happens there in every detail :)
That was a great video and really helped me understand my bikes transmission! Thanks
Very well done video. I appreciate the detailed explanation. Good job, sir!
A very clear and informative explanation. Thank you!
Greatest explanation about this topic sir, kudos
This was excellently explained. Well done.
makes a lot of sense mate! i appreciate the video and explanations! now to fix my gear selector!
great explanations and awesome video, I was looking desperately for the helpful video , finally got it thank u so much man , God bless.
Nice explanation with good detail. Thanks for posting
thanks this give me an idea why my bike is stock in first and not going into the upper gear
this is an absolutely phenomenal video. thanks for the great work!
I have a question about clutch-less shifting, is it bad for the transmission?
great video. It explained something I never understood.
That's mate your videos are great you have done a great job breaking it down thanks bro. Great job I'll be watching for your future videos thanks
Wow - I am so enlightened.

awesome video, I learned a lot from watching. Very easy to follow too.
Well done! One question-what transmission is this? I don't think I ever saw a transmission where the dogs mated to openings in the gear sidewall hollow, or cutout, like these show.
correct terminology - hardlinked="splined"; cylinder=shift drum; arm=shifter forks
Thanks for the knowledge shared. this is Real and no animation.. thanks a lot again
Very informative, thank you very much for making this video.

Beautiful video, thank you so much for your efforts! Came out beautifully! Thanks
thnks bro do making this vedio , it is useful to us why because i am mechanical engineer
So the transmission is in the engine?
Yep
Very well made video. Thank you.
Hello, the video is great and instructive, I would ask you if you can give advice, I have a yamaha fz600s2 2009 that crashes a lot when I put in first gear and from first to second, it is also very audible from third to second, why is this happening people tell me that it is normal for that model, when the oil is cold then it is great otherwise I use FUCHS SILCOLENE COMP 4 10W-40. Hello from Croatia.
thank you for the detailed explanation, Al. I learned a lot from you... :)

Nice video thx!!
I have a question though,
how come that the teeth on the sides of the shifting sprockets exactly engage with the recesses of the free wheelling gears when shifting while they spin rapidly with different speeds? How come you dont need something like a synchronizer ring as in a manual car transmission to match their speeds to connect them?
Very nicely done. I learned something new today. Thanks!
The best explanation ever
Thank you for making this video. Amazing!
very explanatory video. question on an old honda engine? can engine parts interchangeable from 1969 honda s90 with 1969 honda CD90?
Explained quite well. Thank you!
Excellent demonstration
Thanks for the amazing video!! Really your explanation made it look so easy :)
Marc Maquez's motogp Honda Repsol has a gear box that engages the NEXT gear before disengaging the current gear!!! Which is partly why Honda has been kicking ass since Casey Stoner (who was dying to get away from Ducati and get in the Honda team)
Anyways, do you have an idea about how that design works?
Great video. Thank you for taking the time to make this.
is it true that 2nd gear and the 1st gear is the most likely to break first than any other gears?
Bro🙂 I like your technical video. Thanks.
Great video going to open up my xj1100 this winter
Thanks for posting, the visual explains it well.
Superb, clear explanation. Thank you
Thanks for making this video. I have a dead bike motor and instead of repairing it, I'm going to rip the crank and piston out, build a new oil reservoir for only the wet clutch and transmission, and set a 10HP 3 phase AC electric motor up in the crankcase. Electric bike ftw?
It looks like there are two fork shafts, right? Also, the closer, lower gear shaft is the input shaft and the further, higher gear shaft is the output shaft, right?
