In today's episode of Languages of the World, we're talking about Papua New Guinea, indisputably the country with the most native languages.
Despite only having four official languages, Papua New Guinea has an astonishing 832 native languages spoken within its borders. Such diversity makes it a linguist's playground! Full of creoles based on English and German, Papuan languages, and the Austronesian languages that originated in Taiwan and spread through Oceania to places like Madagascar and New Zealand, Papua New Guinea simply cannot be summarized in a single video. But I have tried. Enjoy!

Papua New Guinea owns the Eastern portion of the island of New Guinea. But ALL of the island is like that, and not just the eastern part. Western New Guinea is also incredibly diverse. I wish people woud've talk about New Guinea in general, and not just about one partr of it that became independent because of colonial borders.

Why the English speaking people when refering to the Celtic language of Iberia, name it "Celtiberian" when Spanish people call it just "Celta" or "Céltico" meaning just Celt
Because they are different languages.
Because it's expressed in a latin language and is also an endonym description, why put on a redundant descriptor on something in your region.
@@EriniusT Iberia is the name for whole of the Spanish and Portuguese peninsula, the Celtic part of Iberia is Galicia in northwestern Spain.
How does one be impressed by the spread of Austronesian languages and still undersell just how impressive it actually is.
Champa is Austronesia language of Vietnam. until Viet annex the last of Champa Kingdom/Cham people land. Cham famous with temple structure and Candi, nice stone-brick palace. many of them are destroyed. and American bomb many cham temple and complex

@@katahi0749 all I know is that coastal and lowlander papuans are Austronesian mixed or Austronesian influenced, while highland papuans and most inland people are not.

@@parisan9985 There are 35 languages in Central province. 10 are Austronesian....The language in the song is that of Keapara, an Austronesian language. The song is more or less admiring the beauty of Kapari village (the singers village)..... Please note that locally, the language is referred to as Aroma. Keapara is separate, even though has been classified by Linguists as one with the language in the song....As a local, I believe more studies may reveal that Keapara is separate from Aroma language

The Mi in Tok Pisin reminded me of the mi in Swahili, which is a contraction of the word mimi, referring to an subject pronoun in 1st person singular in Swahili, mi serves that purpose in Swahili 🇰🇪 Example: mi ninaenda shule- Iam going to school

Any Idea of why the Invader terms did to even owerpower (not talking about military history) the Celtic natives of Britain to spread terms like "Brittany" and "Kernow" (just a few but their meaning of these words shouldn't mean their lands)
I only heard of Tok Pisin- an English -based creole and Hiri Motu-another creole influenced by English, German and other regional languages. English is an official language

You can find its lyrics if you go to the Wikipedia article of the Star Spangled Banner and read it in German, but of course it's just the lyrics

What languages can you speak fluently?
I'd say I speak English the most fluently, followed by French. I can understand and express myself effectively in French 90% of the time. After that, I'd say I'm pretty good in Italian and Afrikaans. I can understand/read German pretty well, but speaking is super hard for me. I'm still at a beginner level for Russian :)

+Ben Simon I'd love to! unfortunately, I have a lot of languages on my plate right now, but in the future, I'd love to learn Mandarin, Japanese or Korean.
The Polyglot Files I am trying out Japanese now and it is not that hard. It is not easy but if you take it slow its fine. I use the App memerise.

I can teach you several languages of Papua New Guinea
This was a bit of a let down. You didn't really say much about the languages of Papua New Guneae. I was hoping you'd speak about the number of language families and dialects, levels of mutual intelligibility etc. Not just the broken English and broken German. It's like Speaking about the Languagrs of India and only mentioning Indian English. Every colonized country has their version of a broken European Language, not very interesting.
Unfortunately so many mistakes. With a lot of things you say, I can recognize what source you used and how you understood it incorrectly.. Please do more research before posting! Check out langfocus for some well-researched videos (also for example on Tok Pisin!).
