Bit disappointed that I just forked out £17000 at ProAV on a C500MKII that seem to be outperformed just after few weeks in terms of slow motion!!!! It seems to me that the C500MKII just has the full frame sensor but everything else the C300MKIII has and even better...
The C300 III does have better slow motion. But the C500 II is still very much the flagship. A better, larger sensor and better low light seems to be the two big things. But we need to get them side by side before knowing all the differences. Carl

Of Two Lands I was thinking that same thing. When you are in harsh conditions, the c300 Mark iii and c500 Mark ii will be unusable without a rain cover which is less than ideal. I guess that’s what they made the 1dx iii for though..

Great overview Carl. Thanks. Looks like a good improvement on the Mk2 which in 4k never looked that sharp. Still not convinced about the audio controls though, if you're in full handheld mode using the hand grip you can't use them. Now if they did a package with the EVF and ditched the monitor that would be interesting for us non AF users
Canon has upgraded or introduced every possible camera in the Cinema EOS line, except for two: the 1DC (which they killed because of low demand) and the C100, which has been neglected for 6 years and to my knowledge hasn't been killed yet. We've gotten the C200, C300 MK3, C500 MK2 and C700. The C100 is an amazing camera that deserves a MK3. If ever there was a time to upgrade the C100 it would be now. It's long overdue IMO.
Think it's unfortunate of Canon to release the C300III shortly after launching the C 500 MK II. Higher framerates have become an important feature, which the C 500 is missing. I feel fooled as a buyer of the C 500 II and as a Canon customer (in spite of the full sensor).
Wonder if it will be addressed in a firmware update. Is the extra $5K USD worth the 5.9K sensor? Will the increased dynamic range make for a better image? Guess we'll see in the tests but both cameras without a doubt are more than adequate for 99% + film makers. The 2k 120 crop isn't the end of the world and is still completely useable but the fact you don't have to readjust your shot on the C300MKiii will be incredibly beneficial to doc film shooters, etc...

I have tried out the 2K 120 fps - it's ok and perhaps good enough for the few time one is using it. Nevertheless the full sensor 6 K is fantastic. As a backup camera I am also using the Black Magic 6 K - for light travelling. The quality in 6 K 25-50 fps and 2.5 K up to 120 fps is amazing for it's price.
5:17 LMAO....5 mins into the video I thought I was watching a review on the C500 Mark II and then couldn't figure out why he said the sensor was super 35 and then I realized "holy shit this is a new camera". I didn't realize Canon announced the C300 update until now.
I think it would be nice from canon if they bring an update to the C500 Mark II so it can shoot 120fps in S35 4K. Otherwise C500 M2 people will be a little disappointed...
Many people in the C500MKII Owners Facebook group are pretty livid right now. Just goes to show that you should never jump the gun on a brand new camera, especially when NAB is right around the corner. The camera market these days is very unpredictable and so supersaturated, that some lower end models will inevitably encroach on some of the higher end models' capabilities. Its less about tiers these days, and more about niche capabilities. If you want full frame 6k, go with the C500MKII, but if you don't care as much about FF or 6K and would rather have HFR, go with the C300MKII. And if you need 8K, but no internal NDs, the R5 is perfect for you. Cameras are so close in capabilities these days, that's its more about what you as a creator can do with it, rather than the camera itself, which I think is ultimately a good thing.
I truly appreciate your effort in providing us with those reviews even in these difficult times. I must admit that it is a very very interesting camera for broadcast (as it was the original C300). Does Canon have any sort of shoulder mount accessory? And, is there any way to put a professional wireless mic receiver in between the back and the V-lock battery without the need of cables?

One thing I've been considering is the crop-sensor. I understand why they chose to incorporate the super 35, but I can't help feel as though I'd be missing something. Still, I don't know if that alone would justify leveling up to the C500...
It is so sad these days... I saved up some money for investing in new gear, maybe this one (but to be honest, the new version of the FS5). And now i have to buy food, pay rent, insurance etc. with that money... I hope i will survive :-( ... But thanks for your effort! It feels good, simulating some kind of normality.
Yep same here, was getting loads of freelance work and was planning on investing in new gear, now due to all of this I haven’t got the work coming in and the income so all of that “investment money” is being quickly used up to pay the bills. Hopefully our industry can recover quickly!
In C300mk3 it seems they have introduced something similar to the dual gain architecture of Arri Alexa Alev sensor, I'm curious to see how it works because I know there are some important patents in Arri cameras tecnologies that can't be violated.

As a Canon C500 Mark II owner, I feel like I missed out on the 4k 120p. Don't get me wrong, 5.9k and Full Frame is totally worth it but would have been nice to have that option. I'm just going to have to pickup the R5 for those specialty shots and maybe even keep it as a dedicated gimbal camera. Now what to do with my C200...
Can the Canon EVF-V50 be used for this camera? So that I can still use my touch screen with all controls but still have an evf is to view in bright daylight situations? Or does it need to use the video port as well?
That is so not true! C300Mkii seems nice, I have the budget for it, and I need a dedicated video camera with built in ND and XLR imputes , but I am still on the fence because FX9 is no slouch at the same price point, and I have a feeling Black magic might drop a New Ursa Mini Pro anytime soon with internal B-Raw , That will be huge if you ask me, and Panasonic might drop a new cinema line with there new Full frame L-mount, I would Hate to buy a C300Mkii and aa bunch of lenses and then have one of these cameras come out at the end of this year, let alone if canon puts out a C100 with an RF mount. YES C300Mkii looks nice but its not that exiting . I'll tell you what is exiting an XT4 paired with MKX Zoom Lenses, now thats pure FIRE

Very interesting camera! For our needs, this pretty much ticks all the boxes. We're currently shooting with the EVA1, but interested in the Canon cinema lineup. The C200 didn't do it for us, but the C300 mkiii just might!

Amazing looking camera. Mouth watering. Fantastico! But... As a predominantly a Sony shoote, I'd be interested in switching systems, in taking the pain and expense of investing in new glass, in the bit and bobs and batteries- ..so as to make use of their exiting, incredible Canon RF glass. I struggle to see why, as they continue roll out their new RF mount and parade the advantages of mirrorless lenses, that these new Cinema cameras don't have a RF mount underneath an EF adapter... The EF system is essentially dead, and as we see with the coming R5, the future is mirrorless. The physics of the lenses is undeniable... Sony has the same mount from the a6000 to Venice, still the only manufacturer to do this- and once you've been adapting any lens under the sun to a mirrorless mount, it's really, really hard to look at the EF mount the same way again, and lay down a sizeable chunk of change for an EF camera. Canon will keep many customers with this camera, but they may not get many new ones.
Thank god they gave 4k 120fps 2k 180fps.... thank god canon thought about slow motion feature... this is the best camera of canon. Even they gave 4k 120fps in canon eos r5 mirror less camera great to hear that. Canon finally did something for slow motion...
It's weirdly perfect for what I do, how are the pre amps? I self shoot most of the time when using a camera and the other option I had was to attach a Mix Pre 3 somewhere on the camera and use that for the audio. The mark ii was pretty good for audio but is it the same pre amps again or have they made improvements there too?
Canon C200 for $5000 you get canon RAW Lite, With the money you save , you can buy Lenses or Lights . Think about it Music Videos are short you can film in raw.
What would you class as 'reasonably priced' out of interest? Obviously its always great when things cost less. But its already at a lower pricepoint than the C300 line normally sits at, plus its priced lower than Sony's FX9. Carl

There are things that other cameras can't match with Alexa like the ability to limit saturation from exceeding a limit when exposure/gain is increased and the beautiful highlight roll-off. It is in the highlight roll-of the DGO helps for Alexa, not only in increasing the dynamic range.
Well that’s what Canon are aiming to achieve with this technology. They talk a lot about saturation levels in highlights in the info they sent over before release. Will be interesting to see people’s tests Carl
Still no RF mount. It's like they don't know that EF lenses can be adapted. Strange. The dual gain ISO is clearly the most exciting thing about this camera.
Yeh, no RF mount being built into these cameras is a bit of a mystery isn’t it. DGO is looking fantastic. I’d be careful about calling it ‘dual native iso’ though. Keen to separate it in peoples minds from a dual native ISO. As it’s very different. Carl
RF mount is fly by wire or let's say focus by wire technology which is very unreliable in manual focus till this date, and in these kind of Pro/Semi Full production cameras those lenses are not reliable. Other half is it's still lenses and suffers through Par focal, stepless aperture, inconsistent ring sizes(front diameter, focus ring, zoom and aperture ring). My be one day RF lens might come with those all upgrades, which means Canon doesn't have plan for those in RF lenses. I think this way no offence though.
Yeah not gonna happen until they decide to produce RF cinema glass. With so many other cameras having EF mounts or people adapting to EF cinema glass, I don't see that happening anytime soon!
I believe that what Loud&Clear and Carl are trying to say is that by having an RF mount you still have the possibility of using EF , PL and Locking EF adapteurs. The question is: does an RF mount give you the space to put internal variable NDs when using RF lenses. My bet is that canon will come out with RF mount for the cinema line by January 2021, that will sit either above or below the C500Mkii &C300Mkiii in order to protect these 2 cameras.
Compared to the C500 II ? Possibly, would have to do side by side tests to know for sure. I wouldn't class this as having a small sensor though, super35mm is pretty much industry standard now at this point. Carl
No, their interchangeable mount design doesn't allow enough space for an RF mount option unfortunately. So I doubt it will ever happen. The back of the lens would have to be recessed inside the camera pretty much. Carl

Yes you can use the EVF-V50. Thats a back module so doesn't need a video port.

Can the C300 III output 4k60 4:2:2 over HDMI? My external capture devices use HDMI and that's crucial to my workflow
sony sensor may still have advantage about low light performance BUT c300mark3's dynamic range should be spectacular!

damn, this means so many good things. the c300 II will probably drop in price so more people can afford a great camera. it also means canon still loves their old series so maybe we might see a c100 III? something like no RAW but beefy codecs with 4k? i can't wait :)

Very interesting camera! For our needs, this pretty much ticks all the boxes. We're currently shooting with the EVA1, but interested in the Canon cinema lineup. The C200 didn't do it for us, but the C300 mkiii just might!

Amazing looking camera. Mouth watering. Fantastico! But... As a predominantly a Sony shoote, I'd be interested in switching systems, in taking the pain and expense of investing in new glass, in the bit and bobs and batteries- ..so as to make use of their exiting, incredible Canon RF glass. I struggle to see why, as they continue roll out their new RF mount and parade the advantages of mirrorless lenses, that these new Cinema cameras don't have a RF mount underneath an EF adapter... The EF system is essentially dead, and as we see with the coming R5, the future is mirrorless. The physics of the lenses is undeniable... Sony has the same mount from the a6000 to Venice, still the only manufacturer to do this- and once you've been adapting any lens under the sun to a mirrorless mount, it's really, really hard to look at the EF mount the same way again, and lay down a sizeable chunk of change for an EF camera. Canon will keep many customers with this camera, but they may not get many new ones.

Thank god they gave 4k 120fps 2k 180fps.... thank god canon thought about slow motion feature... this is the best camera of canon. Even they gave 4k 120fps in canon eos r5 mirror less camera great to hear that.

What's the raw light bit depth while shooting at 4k 60fps and 120fps? all 12bit? or drop to 10bit like c200?

What does the PQ setting do?
It's weirdly perfect for what I do, how are the pre amps? I self shoot most of the time when using a camera and the other option I had was to attach a Mix Pre 3 somewhere on the camera and use that for the audio. The mark ii was pretty good for audio but is it the same pre amps again or have they made improvements there too?

Canon C200 for $5000 you get canon RAW Lite, With the money you save , you can buy Lenses or Lights . Think about it Music Videos are short you can film in raw.

There are things that other cameras can't match with Alexa like the ability to limit saturation from exceeding a limit when exposure/gain is increased and the beautiful highlight roll-off. It is in the highlight roll-of the DGO helps for Alexa, not only in increasing the dynamic range.
Well that’s what Canon are aiming to achieve with this technology. They talk a lot about saturation levels in highlights in the info they sent over before release. Will be interesting to see people’s tests Carl

This is a preproduction camera, so probably unfair to judge things like that too closely right now.

Still no RF mount. It's like they don't know that EF lenses can be adapted. Strange. The dual gain ISO is clearly the most exciting thing about this camera.
Yeh, no RF mount being built into these cameras is a bit of a mystery isn’t it. DGO is looking fantastic. I’d be careful about calling it ‘dual native iso’ though. Keen to separate it in peoples minds from a dual native ISO. As it’s very different. Carl
RF mount is fly by wire or let's say focus by wire technology which is very unreliable in manual focus till this date, and in these kind of Pro/Semi Full production cameras those lenses are not reliable. Other half is it's still lenses and suffers through Par focal, stepless aperture, inconsistent ring sizes(front diameter, focus ring, zoom and aperture ring). My be one day RF lens might come with those all upgrades, which means Canon doesn't have plan for those in RF lenses. I think this way no offence though.
Yeah not gonna happen until they decide to produce RF cinema glass. With so many other cameras having EF mounts or people adapting to EF cinema glass, I don't see that happening anytime soon!
I believe that what Loud&Clear and Carl are trying to say is that by having an RF mount you still have the possibility of using EF , PL and Locking EF adapteurs. The question is: does an RF mount give you the space to put internal variable NDs when using RF lenses.
My bet is that canon will come out with RF mount for the cinema line by January 2021, that will sit either above or below the C500Mkii &C300Mkiii in order to protect these 2 cameras.

Compared to the C500 II ? Possibly, would have to do side by side tests to know for sure.
I wouldn't class this as having a small sensor though, super35mm is pretty much industry standard now at this point.

Mk 2 did not do ProRes Raw
The Raw is internal now, so theres no Prores raw option i'm afraid. Canon Raw Light can be used in more software now though than Prores raw.

No, just two CFast card slots. Its the same media set up as the C500 II.
There is one SD card as well but it is for proxies.

No, their interchangeable mount design doesn't allow enough space for an RF mount option unfortunately. So I doubt it will ever happen. The back of the lens would have to be recessed inside the camera pretty much.
