I've been sitting by my laptop rocking backwards and forth for weeks hoping this review was coming and it certainly didn't disappoint. Thanks for another outstanding in-depth review Mr Undone. I know what I'll be spending my pocket money on later this year.
Separate from my previous comment about the CFexpress card and reader, I very much appreciate your review of the C300 Mark III. It helped confirm in my mind that I want the C300 Mark III instead of the C500 Mark II. Additionally, I always appreciate your reviews. They are clear, concise and easy to understand. You are a straight shooter without being mean or rude, which is the way everyone should be when doing reviews. I also like your reviews that get really deep into the technical stuff. Keep up the great work.
This was the first comment that appeared for me under the video. Well done this one got me good! 🤣🤣🤣 I can see someone holding that in front of themselves in public now 😂.
Nice coverage - thanks Gerald! This is tempting. I find myself using my C200 more and more over the P6K because is is just a simpler setup - no need for a follow focus or a big cine battery plate hanging off the back. So now the C300mkIII is tempting as a new A cam.
This is probably one of, if not, the best reviews on the C300 mk iii. I'm really hoping you do one just as in-depth for the Canon Eos C70 which I am eagerly anticipating!
7:20 - To correct you : You may notice that your signal on your waveform can go beyond 100, or below 0 (there is some room above and below). So, the thing is that the wafeform is using an IRE scaling ( -6% to 109% IRE, where 0% to 100% IRE correspond to limited range) while the zebra is using full scale signal (0 to 1023 in 10 bits) That means that 0% on the waveform corresponds to 0% IRE = 64 (on a 10 bits scale) And 100% on the waveform corresponds to 100% IRE = 940 (10 bits) (And just to be clear : -6% IRE = 0, and 109% = 1023) With a quick formula, you find that 92% IRE is equal to roughly 872 in term of 10 bits value While 86% (full scale) is equal to ~880 The small gap between the 2 value comes from your percentage reading on the waveform !
I recently wrap a shoot using this camera (provided by canon), I would say this camera is the few camera I feel that I don't need overexposed and I can live with normal exposure and even underexposed little bit. the grain structure is much improved compare to c300 2 and c500 2 (both shows very similar fixed pattern grain).
Great review! As an owner of a C500 Mark II, I agree that this camera should be up there. The 120fps w/ AF alone is worth it. However, the fullframe look is definitely hard to beat.
If I paid 6k more to buy the c500 mark ii than c300 mark iii I would probably said the same. BUT thank God I didnt and bought the c300 mark iii. And now I can say that very few could tell the difference about the fullframe look. And believe me my clients cant tell the difference for sure... :)
All major brands should give their new cameras to review people like you...... coz this is what we need to know. the quality of your VIDEOS are next level brother. Keep on doing ♥️😍
So thorough, wow! Such a great review, this really changed my view of the C300mkiii...now I want one. Thank you, I always trust this channel for solid and thoughtful camera advice.
Love the Review. Question though. I picked up a Canon C100 at a great price under $1k. Even though 1080, do you think it still holds / for youtube in 2020?
As someone who is mostly actor and writer and just scratching the surface for cinematography, your videos are mesmerizing. Your voice is so soothing, and I only understand about half of what you say, so I get into a kind of trance watching them... Love the detail, though. ~Trav
It doesn’t make sense that you only have 150k subs.. but then again you’re probably too technical, articulate and intelligent for most people to comprehend the complexity of your videos. 🤦🏽♂️
For some reason I'm not impressed with the R5, can you do a review and possibly change my mind. I don't need high pixels and only see the non-crop and AF as a differentiator. Is it enough?
Great review Gerald! I really enjoyed some time with a C500 MKII recently and preordered a C70 on day 1 because of it, but anticipate selling my last Panasonic EVA1 in the future and picking up a Canon C300 MKIII. Thank you Gerald.
So I guess the question for me is: Is it worth $9k more than BMPCC6k? The advancement of dynamic range is fantastic. 16 stops vs 13. I just don't know that it will be better for freelancers. Cameras are becoming so good the difference in quality is negligible to most people when exposed correctly. If this was for a studio camera setup I think canon wins. From a general perspective BM6k is the budget filmmakers dream. When ever the 12k Ursa comes out it will be interesting to compare it to this.
One thing that most people don't consider when they like or dislike any camera is "shoot day anxiety". We all have it and the biggest consideration of buying a $ 15K camera that nobody really talks about is the having most of the controls on the outside of the camera in the form of those dials and buttons makes you less anxious and more inclined to change settings. There are so many things to keep track of when shooting that those buttons are great compared to searching though menus and potentially messing something up when $$ and your rep' is on the line. A BMPCC4k with a a button setup like the Canon C serious would be amazing, or maybe a special breakout box that you attach to the usb type-C...., wait! that was my idea lol!!!!
I've been watching your reviews for a while and I've always appreciated your thoroughness and professionalism, but I wish you'd include more test footage (and I don't mean color charts and objects), because technical specs and functionality matter a lot, but at the end of the day we need to gauge the image quality of a camera (at least it's important for me), as I can handle any quirks if the camera produces a good image
*This camera and the C500 are perfect! BUT:* The one big downside to consumer is partnerships which hinder improvements and price points. Why is Canon still using CF-Express? Would people care if the camera was either slightly bigger or if it did not use CF-Express? A 1TB card (x2 512GB) is roughly £1,500 GBP so the benefit of CF-Express is? NVME drives and SSDs are much cheaper. You could argue the bandwidth of a 2.5" SSD is far too low which it is as well as the size is rather bulky compared to XQD. However here enters the NVME drive in M.2 form. They have gotten a lot cheaper and something like the 970 Pro is around £350 (top endurance/efficiency). Could it be that the heat would cause problems recording, specially in warm environments? Possibly but nothing little extra heatsink couldn't fix. Is the longer form factor an issue as well? Again it might be, but at that cost, it is in ALL in consumers interests. XQD in the Video world is a monopoly and no reason for it to be that expensive, it's actually quite disgusting. Now I totally understand, if you shoot bigger projects with budgets, this is no an issue but it actually is, you are pissing money away. Here enters Z-Cam and Blackmagic, pushing the industry. They have their issues but nothing that iterations of hardwork cannot pay off. --- @Gerald great review as always! Still watching it through but had to pause as this thought came in. If I had the money, I would sell everything I have and get this, just for the AF.
Hey Gerald, I think I'd agree with you on the C300 Mk III being my favorite cinema camera at the moment. However, with the C200 now only costing $5,500, and as someone who shoots mostly event coverage, indie narratives, and occasional commercials but never for professional broadcast companies as of yet, I'm having trouble deciding if it's actually worth spending exactly twice as much just for the addition of the 10-bit AVC codec. I've seen two schools of thought which state either that 10-bit is only necessary for professional broadcast and all web stuff or projects for individual clients should be done with 8-bit, or that 8-bit is worthless and everyone needs to start shooting 10-bit at minimum for everything. Do you have any thoughts on this? I don't necessarily have a budget as much as I'm wanting whatever is going to be the best value and investment (and by investment I don't mean retain monetary value as much as serving me best for the longest amount of time without needing to upgrade).
Thank you for verifiing why the C300 miii is my current fav cinema camera. Yes it's annoying there is no RF mount option but give me the smaller Super35 sensor over Full Frame with better features any day. Well Undone Mr Undone👌🏿👌🏿
Gerald, I have to challenge you on your dynamic range opinions. I've had a comparison between the Blackmagic Pocket 6k vs Arri Alexa, and the Pocket 6k won by a mile. At least 2 more stops in highlight latitude. If you're not getting the same results, then you're settings must be wrong. I'd be willing to test this any time if you doubt it
"Gerald Undone.... He's Crazy! " ... Hey Gerald.. how are the media files to work with in Resolve? Anything I should be aware of in editing workflow with those files? How does it look compared to BRAW from an Ursa Mini Pro 4.6 G2? A new kink in this buying decision.... The new Ursa Mini 12K is $1,000 less than the C300 MKIII Thoughts?
I would love to see a comprehensive shootout of the C300ii and FX9, though I suspect the results would be pretty inconclusive as far as which is "better." We are quite blessed to have such choices these days.
My C200 is only ever user in my studio and for client interviews in a controlled environment. The controlled lighting means that's more than I need. Whenever I'm out in the wild, I prefer something more portable that can be used more easily hand held or on a gimbal. I love Canon cinema cameras, and this looks like a great option, but I'd probably still use my GH5 more.
Don’t you think a 4K 14 stop dynamic range camera at 11000 is a bit obsolete in 2020 when the red dragon 6k is at 13500? Also given that you can get a c200 at 3900.
Are you planning on reviewing the Canon Eos R5 or R6? I find your reviews always by far the best so i'd love to see one from you, especially because you're a videographer and I only see reviews from hybrid shooters or photographers.
G, U have an awesome video on the c300 mark iii - just bought one and trying to set up. Any tutorials or ideas on where to go to learn how to set false color for skin tones? Thx for all the knowledge!
I can't wait to get mine. Preordered shortly after the announcement and I've been checking my back account every day to see when the money comes out so I can actually expect mine haha
Hey Friend! So I'm curious... been looking on B&H everyday & it just says "New Item Coming Soon" Is this camera already out & available? I've been so confused trying to find information on this camera & its release! I'm late to the party on it but most defiantly getting it! Any insight would help. Thanks :)
1:14 isn't Super35 originaly bigger than 1.5x and APS-C standard? I thought it is a film size around 1.43-1/45x? Sony are calling their crop mode Super35 but it is smaller... My point is that originaly the C300III might be a real Super35, not 1.5x or 1.6x who are APS-C (well the 1.5x is the 1.6x is slightly cropped). Second - I think that the dual gain was used in the A7s sonys, I might be wrong but I remember something like that.
Would love to see you explaining with more details the waveform behavior on CLog 2 you so briefly talked about. I've rewinded and watched many times and still wasn't able to truly understand why it does what it does... Great review, Gerald!
Sounds great, and I managed to keep up with your review Gerald, without reverting to 75% playback speed... Nore than ever it's a minefield for us punters and the clarity and depth of your reviews is very helpful. Dual gain sensor is really clever and the future I think - an APC sized sensor trashing a full frame, about time. No comment about heat or duration, this must be a proper video camera!
Thank you Gerald for an amazing overview of the camera. Very deep and detailed, as always. One question, did I get it right that the camera can’t record in 12bit raw at 50/60 fps?
My old perfect camera for me was the ursa mini pro g2 for the slomo in 4k and best raw codec ive ever used i would love the c300 iii for it's AF but i honestly am not a fan of Canon RAW, i do have an external blackmagic raw recorder so hopefully is gets braw compatibility like the c300ii got
Hi Gerald, I’ve got the Canon Eos R and still do love it, and I am thinking about to buy the Atomos Ninja V! Would be nice if you can compare the Canon Eos R+Ninja V to the Canon R6 and maybe Canon R5. The difference and benefits? ✨
Hi there! Awesome review, such great technical info as always!!! A couple questions about when you say, "shooting with the default CLog2 profile, you can use Canon's official LUT, you can convert to 709 and get terrific color and tonality in just one step" and "there's no benefit to overexposing on this camera...likely because of the Dual Gain Output...I prefer this method...it means a 709 LUT will always be spot on." First question - with CLog2, are considering 18% grey at Canon's recommended 39.8% IRE for CLog 2 to be "correct" exposure to make the LUT be "spot on?" And second question: do you think that this is also true for shooting at high frame rates (like 120) without the DGO, or would you advocate overexposing HFR video by one stop with this camera? THANKS!!!
I am slightly below an average prosumer still Image dslr guy. I am seriously considering this for my first dedicated video camera. I will be using it primarily for skateboarding clips and edits, documentary, wedding gigs, Comedy sketches, and music videos. do you think it is a bit too much for some one at my level or should i go for it?
Hey guys, a amateur question for u. What do you recommend for camera and lens to shot photos on a dark environment, like night clubs and festivals, btw nice video!
Hi I'm Gerald Undone. My Clothes are on but they just get Undone.
Gerald the G Master! One of the most technical and intelligent reviewer on UA-cam. No kidding! Love your videos brother 👍

Man would i love to see Mr "live the fx9" Bloom vs Mr "c300 ii - best camera I've ever used" undone battle. Did he cancel the friendship already? :)
Potato Jet did it. C300mk3 won.
This is a damn good review. It felt like it was 45mins long but I was surprised when I saw at the end it didn't touch 20mins.
This is probably one of, if not, the best reviews on the C300 mk iii. I'm really hoping you do one just as in-depth for the Canon Eos C70 which I am eagerly anticipating!
Dude, thank you for this review! You've compressed hours of messing around into 15 minutes of learning. Appreciate that!
This is a really great review. I picked one up so I'm looking forward to getting it out there and giving it a whirl.
Awesome review! I'm astounded by the pace you maintain throughout!
Terrific review. Thanks for once again covering some of the little details as well as the usual stuff.
Concise and dense review coupled with practical insight. Gerald, thank you so much!
Great review! Super useful info start to finish with the perfect amount of details and insights into the quirks. Thanks!
Thank you for the Great Presentation. I have a C300 MK I and a C300 MK II, you have convinced me I need the C300 MK III. Thanks again . . .
Absolutely crushing the review game, as always! Thanks man

This was great Gerald. Love how thorough and well thought out it was.
Exquisite review! I appreciated the comparisons, your efficient script, and the not-so-obvious feature overview. Bravo! Subscribed.

7:20 - To correct you :
You may notice that your signal on your waveform can go beyond 100, or below 0 (there is some room above and below).
So, the thing is that the wafeform is using an IRE scaling ( -6% to 109% IRE, where 0% to 100% IRE correspond to limited range) while the zebra is using full scale signal (0 to 1023 in 10 bits)
That means that 0% on the waveform corresponds to 0% IRE = 64 (on a 10 bits scale)
And 100% on the waveform corresponds to 100% IRE = 940 (10 bits)
(And just to be clear : -6% IRE = 0, and 109% = 1023)
With a quick formula, you find that 92% IRE is equal to roughly 872 in term of 10 bits value
While 86% (full scale) is equal to ~880
The small gap between the 2 value comes from your percentage reading on the waveform !
Always a quality watch. Thanks Gerald. We’ll be adding this bad boy to our arsenal thanks to you. 🤙🏼

Love the Canon Cinema line. Great cameras.
Would love to see you explaining with more details the waveform behavior on CLog 2 you so briefly talked about. I've rewinded and watched many times and still wasn't able to truly understand why it does what it does... Great review, Gerald!
I explain it more thoroughly in my C500 II review. Here's a shortcut to that section: ua-cam.com/video/pOo2hOwVZio/v-deo.html
@@geraldundone I'll definitely watch it carefully! Greetings from Brazil! ✌️
Great Review! I can't wait to get this Canon C300 mark iii
Can’t wait for your c400 review!!! 🤓
Another insanely detailed overview. Thanks, man!
Thank you Gerald for an amazing overview of the camera. Very deep and detailed, as always. One question, did I get it right that the camera can’t record in 12bit raw at 50/60 fps?
Correct. Cinema Raw Light is 10 bit only when above 30fps. That goes for the C500 II as well
so i wonder... how do you think this compares with the eos R5 4K 120? thank you again for a wonderful over view.
a brilliant review - as always. thank you.
Gerald you just Undone C300 Mk3! Excellent test review.
I need this camera!
So go buy it lady
