I've been sitting by my laptop rocking backwards and forth for weeks hoping this review was coming and it certainly didn't disappoint. Thanks for another outstanding in-depth review Mr Undone. I know what I'll be spending my pocket money on later this year.
Separate from my previous comment about the CFexpress card and reader, I very much appreciate your review of the C300 Mark III. It helped confirm in my mind that I want the C300 Mark III instead of the C500 Mark II. Additionally, I always appreciate your reviews. They are clear, concise and easy to understand. You are a straight shooter without being mean or rude, which is the way everyone should be when doing reviews. I also like your reviews that get really deep into the technical stuff. Keep up the great work.
Nice coverage - thanks Gerald! This is tempting. I find myself using my C200 more and more over the P6K because is is just a simpler setup - no need for a follow focus or a big cine battery plate hanging off the back. So now the C300mkIII is tempting as a new A cam.
This was the first comment that appeared for me under the video. Well done this one got me good! 🤣🤣🤣 I can see someone holding that in front of themselves in public now 😂.
This is probably one of, if not, the best reviews on the C300 mk iii. I'm really hoping you do one just as in-depth for the Canon Eos C70 which I am eagerly anticipating!
Great review! As an owner of a C500 Mark II, I agree that this camera should be up there. The 120fps w/ AF alone is worth it. However, the fullframe look is definitely hard to beat.
If I paid 6k more to buy the c500 mark ii than c300 mark iii I would probably said the same. BUT thank God I didnt and bought the c300 mark iii. And now I can say that very few could tell the difference about the fullframe look. And believe me my clients cant tell the difference for sure... :)
As someone who is mostly actor and writer and just scratching the surface for cinematography, your videos are mesmerizing. Your voice is so soothing, and I only understand about half of what you say, so I get into a kind of trance watching them... Love the detail, though. ~Trav
I recently wrap a shoot using this camera (provided by canon), I would say this camera is the few camera I feel that I don't need overexposed and I can live with normal exposure and even underexposed little bit. the grain structure is much improved compare to c300 2 and c500 2 (both shows very similar fixed pattern grain).
At 4:05 and 11.13 you can pretty clearly see that the canon has true blacks and true whites (film roll and the box) and that the Sony + lens combination used here has a significant blending of purple into the text on the film roll and the roll itself. Like you say, it's because of lens correction and chromatic aberration, but I found this to be also true with Sony native lenses. Is this something that is generally caused by the lens used or more of a Sony problem / settings issue? Because when I do this test with my A7III and a 55 1.8 ZA and 85 1.8 GM I get similar results to the ones here (even more so in sLog.2 and RAW way more than JPG) and I've been majorly annoyed by it. It always seems to have a colour cast on black shirts or white dresses. Is there a way to fix this? Is it the camera? Is it the lens? Or what can I do in postprocessing? I really feel like my Sony never seems to deliver a good white balance (and I want to call it black balance as well here). Desaturating the affected colors never really seem to work for me because it shifts objects way to much when they actually do have that colour and partially masking things out is definitely not worth the time put into it when it's just a potential user error.
So thorough, wow! Such a great review, this really changed my view of the C300mkiii...now I want one. Thank you, I always trust this channel for solid and thoughtful camera advice.
All major brands should give their new cameras to review people like you...... coz this is what we need to know. the quality of your VIDEOS are next level brother. Keep on doing ♥️😍
I would love to see a comprehensive shootout of the C300ii and FX9, though I suspect the results would be pretty inconclusive as far as which is "better." We are quite blessed to have such choices these days.
I've been watching your reviews for a while and I've always appreciated your thoroughness and professionalism, but I wish you'd include more test footage (and I don't mean color charts and objects), because technical specs and functionality matter a lot, but at the end of the day we need to gauge the image quality of a camera (at least it's important for me), as I can handle any quirks if the camera produces a good image
1:14 isn't Super35 originaly bigger than 1.5x and APS-C standard? I thought it is a film size around 1.43-1/45x? Sony are calling their crop mode Super35 but it is smaller... My point is that originaly the C300III might be a real Super35, not 1.5x or 1.6x who are APS-C (well the 1.5x is the 1.6x is slightly cropped). Second - I think that the dual gain was used in the A7s sonys, I might be wrong but I remember something like that.
Would love to see you explaining with more details the waveform behavior on CLog 2 you so briefly talked about. I've rewinded and watched many times and still wasn't able to truly understand why it does what it does... Great review, Gerald!
7:20 - To correct you : You may notice that your signal on your waveform can go beyond 100, or below 0 (there is some room above and below). So, the thing is that the wafeform is using an IRE scaling ( -6% to 109% IRE, where 0% to 100% IRE correspond to limited range) while the zebra is using full scale signal (0 to 1023 in 10 bits) That means that 0% on the waveform corresponds to 0% IRE = 64 (on a 10 bits scale) And 100% on the waveform corresponds to 100% IRE = 940 (10 bits) (And just to be clear : -6% IRE = 0, and 109% = 1023) With a quick formula, you find that 92% IRE is equal to roughly 872 in term of 10 bits value While 86% (full scale) is equal to ~880 The small gap between the 2 value comes from your percentage reading on the waveform !

For some reason I'm not impressed with the R5, can you do a review and possibly change my mind. I don't need high pixels and only see the non-crop and AF as a differentiator. Is it enough?
I can't wait to get mine. Preordered shortly after the announcement and I've been checking my back account every day to see when the money comes out so I can actually expect mine haha
Hey Friend! So I'm curious... been looking on B&H everyday & it just says "New Item Coming Soon" Is this camera already out & available? I've been so confused trying to find information on this camera & its release! I'm late to the party on it but most defiantly getting it! Any insight would help. Thanks :)
Great review Gerald! I really enjoyed some time with a C500 MKII recently and preordered a C70 on day 1 because of it, but anticipate selling my last Panasonic EVA1 in the future and picking up a Canon C300 MKIII. Thank you Gerald.
Hi, Gerald can you send me a close up photo or video of the cable to connect the monitor unit of the c300 Mark 2 to the body cause i want to see if i can get this monitor to connect to my C300 Mark 1 cause my monitor is broken
Hello Gerald, , I have a frustrating problem right now. I’m trying to connect my Atmos Shinobi monitor to my C300 III via hdmi, but there’s no signal, iv tried couple cables it’s all not working, is there some setting I did wrong?
My C200 is only ever user in my studio and for client interviews in a controlled environment. The controlled lighting means that's more than I need. Whenever I'm out in the wild, I prefer something more portable that can be used more easily hand held or on a gimbal. I love Canon cinema cameras, and this looks like a great option, but I'd probably still use my GH5 more.
As far as I understand I don't really need CF express cards, so long as I already have SD cards (e.g. SanDisk Extreme Pro 300 MB/s) - is this correct? also the new c500 only has the SD card slot for "proxies" whatever that's supposed to mean; am I missing something here? thanks
The SD card slots on these cameras are for utility purposes. Loading LUTs, saving settings, and yes, writing smaller proxy files for easier editing. To record the proper footage you need CFExpress cards.
@@geraldundone Thank you for demystifying this! as you say in the video, the C300 is a better choice regardless; I was just hoping to cover my useless purchase of the Sandisk Extreme PRO SD @300 MB/s as I misread Mbs for MBs in the data rates for the Canon EOS R :)
Thank you for verifiing why the C300 miii is my current fav cinema camera. Yes it's annoying there is no RF mount option but give me the smaller Super35 sensor over Full Frame with better features any day. Well Undone Mr Undone👌🏿👌🏿
Gerald, I have to challenge you on your dynamic range opinions. I've had a comparison between the Blackmagic Pocket 6k vs Arri Alexa, and the Pocket 6k won by a mile. At least 2 more stops in highlight latitude. If you're not getting the same results, then you're settings must be wrong. I'd be willing to test this any time if you doubt it
Love the Review. Question though. I picked up a Canon C100 at a great price under $1k. Even though 1080, do you think it still holds / for youtube in 2020?
Question for you ... I can't seem to get the 4K 120 to work in anything other than RAW (in the XFAVC). Am I doing something wrong? The file will say I shot it in 120/30 or 120/60 but the file itself plays at the base frame rate.
One thing that most people don't consider when they like or dislike any camera is "shoot day anxiety". We all have it and the biggest consideration of buying a $ 15K camera that nobody really talks about is the having most of the controls on the outside of the camera in the form of those dials and buttons makes you less anxious and more inclined to change settings. There are so many things to keep track of when shooting that those buttons are great compared to searching though menus and potentially messing something up when $$ and your rep' is on the line. A BMPCC4k with a a button setup like the Canon C serious would be amazing, or maybe a special breakout box that you attach to the usb type-C...., wait! that was my idea lol!!!!
Sounds great, and I managed to keep up with your review Gerald, without reverting to 75% playback speed... Nore than ever it's a minefield for us punters and the clarity and depth of your reviews is very helpful. Dual gain sensor is really clever and the future I think - an APC sized sensor trashing a full frame, about time. No comment about heat or duration, this must be a proper video camera!
Thank you Gerald for an amazing overview of the camera. Very deep and detailed, as always. One question, did I get it right that the camera can’t record in 12bit raw at 50/60 fps?
Are you planning on reviewing the Canon Eos R5 or R6? I find your reviews always by far the best so i'd love to see one from you, especially because you're a videographer and I only see reviews from hybrid shooters or photographers.

7:20 - To correct you :
You may notice that your signal on your waveform can go beyond 100, or below 0 (there is some room above and below).
So, the thing is that the wafeform is using an IRE scaling ( -6% to 109% IRE, where 0% to 100% IRE correspond to limited range) while the zebra is using full scale signal (0 to 1023 in 10 bits)
That means that 0% on the waveform corresponds to 0% IRE = 64 (on a 10 bits scale)
And 100% on the waveform corresponds to 100% IRE = 940 (10 bits)
(And just to be clear : -6% IRE = 0, and 109% = 1023)
With a quick formula, you find that 92% IRE is equal to roughly 872 in term of 10 bits value
While 86% (full scale) is equal to ~880
The small gap between the 2 value comes from your percentage reading on the waveform !
