- Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Barry Williams, America’s Big Brother, Co-Star, “The Brady Bunch”, Author, “Growing Up Brady”
About Harvey's guest:
Today’s special guest, Barry Williams, is one of the most instantly recognizable and beloved actors of our generation, who became known throughout the world as America’s most reliable big brother, “Greg” on the iconic TV show “The Brady Bunch”.
Although the original sitcom ended in 1974 after 5 seasons, “The Brady Bunch” has had phenomenal longevity and success. There were 7 different TV series, 2 full length feature films, 5 TV specials, a concert tour, 3 record albums, a stage play, a reality series, and countless Brady Bunch merchandising items and collectibles that are still very much in demand, especially the Brady Bunch lunch bucket. And get this: since its premiere on September 26, 1969, “The Brady Bunch” has NEVER been off the air. The show has been broadcast in almost every country on earth, and each of the original 117 episodes has aired over 100,000 times, and for many years it’s been the highest rated program EVER on Nick at Night.
But well beyond “The Brady Bunch”, our guest has had a long and impressive career as an actor, singer, musician, dancer and producer. He’s appeared in dozens of classic TV shows including “Run For Your Life”, “Gomer Pyle”, “Mod Squad”, “Adam-12”, “Mission Impossible”, “Police Woman”, “Three’s Company” and many more. He had recurring roles as “Hannibal” in “General Hospital” and “Dean Strickland”, also known as “The Dean Machine”, in “Hollywood 7”. And WHO can ever forget him on Season 32 of “Dancing with the Stars”, and Season 8 of “The Masked Singer” as one of “the Mummies”.
He starred on Broadway in ”Romance, Romance” and “Pippin”, and he appeared in stage productions of “Grease”, “The Sound of Music”, “West Side Story” and “City of Angels”. On top of all that, he’s a gifted singer and guitar player, and he plays in a band called “Barry Williams and the Travel-eers”, featuring his beautiful wife Tina.
His New York Times bestselling book entitled, “Growing Up Brady: I was a Teenage Greg”, is now in its 3rd edition, and was made into a TV movie, which he co-wrote and co-executive produced. The book highlights the relationships, the behind-the-scenes stories, and especially the people who made “The Brady Bunch” so special to multiple generations around the world.
In 1994 our guest was nominated for a Cable Ace Award for Best Performance in a Comedy Special. And he’s received 4 TV Land Award nominations, and in 2007, he and his fellow Brady Bunch castmates won the TV Land Pop Culture Award. In 1989 he received a Lifetime Achievement Award as a former child star from the Young Artist Foundation.

I wish every former child actor was so centered and comfortable with their career. It must take a lot of self confidence to achieve what Barry Williams has. Another wonderful interview!

Wonderful interview. I loved when you said that Barry felt like your big brother and he replied “I was!” Such a kind, heartfelt answer. I also loved when he called Eve “Jan.” lol
Yes those were very special moments. Made me teary eyed when he said he was my big brother
Soooo interesting to listen to Mr. Williams talk about reinventing himself on the show of a person who did just that (from Judge to Celebrity Interviewer).
Happy for you guys and a lovely, LOVELY, conversation.
Thanks buddy!
Thanks Barry ( Greg) for the good memories watching the show growing up , and Thanks for a enjoyable show . And thanks Harvey for a great interview .❤
You’re most welcome!
Fantastic interview. Excellent questions and detailed answers. Thanks to both of you!
Have a Sunshine Day, Harvey!

Such a sweetie
Very handsome, such a great interview
Thank you so much
I’m so happy you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
My love of The Brady Bunch has been rekindled, thanks to a facebook fan group. Now I’m binging Brady related tidbits on UA-cam & this wonderful interview makes me want to reread Growing Up Brady!
That’s quite a compliment. Thank you so much!!
Harvey is a great interviewer, isn't he? Never heard of him prior to stumbling across these videos a couple days ago.
Thank you so much for “stumbling” into our UA-cam channel! We hope you will enjoy our many great interviews and consider subscribing to our channel!!🙏❤️
Well, YT always deletes randomly my comments...so annoying. Anyway, to reiterate more briefly...Tku for the great interviews you do, Harvey...enjoying them all! Glad I tuned into this one...Barry seems like such a nice, balanced guy...refreshing to see an actor that doesn't come across with ego and full of himself. He gave very thoughtful, articulate answers and was respectful of any other people you asked him about...yet honest and forthright, as well. Love your choices of who you speak to, and you can tell you are such a true fan of them all.
Thank you so much
Thanks for doing these classic show interviews! Watching from just north of Toronto - I just read you are Canadian too. 🙂
Yes I’m in Toronto. Thanks so much for watching!
Harvey, this was my first interview watch from your channel but sure won't be my last. You were so well prepared! And Barry Williams is a class act. I'm the same age as Mike Lookinland who played Bobby, grew up in a family with 3 brothers, 3 sisters just like the show. Of course we never missed it. Thank you for this excellent chat with Barry. 😊
Hello Doug. I’m so happy you found our show. I hope you’ll check out more of our great interviews with legendary stars and please spread the word about our show!🙏❤️
Mr. Baer was our agriculture teacher, I just recalled!
Thanks for sharing!
Barry is so down to earth and he looks great, but we’re all getting so old!! 😫 On a side note, I recently ordered a piece from the Christopher Knight Furniture Company!
We’re getting better and wiser - and happier - not older. Enjoy the furniture!!
As Abraham Lincoln once said: "It's not the years in your life that counts, it's the LIFE in your years." 😊@harveybrownstoneinterviews8980
Great interview Harvey! (Stay groovy). Little trip down memory lane . Loved it. Who didn't have a crush on Greg Brady?
So glad you enjoyed Barry’s appearance on our show. And yes, I certainly did have a crush on Barry.
Barry Williams will be 70 years old on September 30, 2024.
@GeminiladyJackson-xq6hc so hard to believe. But then I am about to turn 68 and can’t believe that either!!
Totally enjoyed that one. Smooth, interesting, enjoyable, informative and fun. Great questions, great answers. Fun way to start my day. “Harvey, stay groovy”😅
I love it!! No one ever calls me smooth or groovy!! Thanks for watching!! Love you so much Ella!!
Had such a crush on "Greg" growing up. Great interview. He's so humble and still a cutie! LOL
Yes he’s definitely all that!
Good to see a handsome Barry still!
He’s as adorable as ever!
Happy 70th Birthday Barry
70 already? Shocking
It was a wonderful interview .
That’s so very kind of you. Thank you!
Btw, I am a big fan, and am going to start watching you and Christopher’s podcast. I would LOVE for Donny Osmond to be one of your guests. I remember the Brady’s being on Donny and Marie’s variety show in the ‘70’s, then you were a guest on their daytime talk show in the late ‘90’s. early 2000’s. You and Donny have so much in common with your childhoods. He started his career at age 5 on The Andy Williams Show with his brothers. He was a teen idol. You have expressed a lot going through the same feelings and experiences he himself has expressed that he went through. It would be a great show. Or gave both Donny and Marie on together. It would be a great episode. You are a very talented actor, singer, and musician. I’ve always enjoyed your work.❤
Barry Williams does not read this comments page, as it is for fans of Harvey Brownstone Interviews. Try reaching out to Barry on his own website. As for Donny Osmond, he has consistently refused to appear on our show despite the fact that Marie appeared on our show and loved it.
enjoyed this interview, how do you select the people you interview? It would be nice if you could interview Shelley Fabares and Paul Peterson from the Donna Reed Show, Shelley especially had a long career from a child actress and transitioned to an adult actress. How about the remaining cast of Three's Company?
We’ve invited all of the people you mentioned to appear on our show. Unfortunately they have all declined. You wouldn’t believe how difficult it is to get celebrities to appear on a UA-cam show.
Loved the Brady bunch
Me too! I hope you enjoyed the interview.
Love your interviews Harvey!
That means the world to me. Thank you so much!!!
@@harveybrownstoneinterviews8980 You mean the word to us, Mr. Harvey.
Thoroughly entertaining, Mr. Brownstone! Loved Barry's willingness to deep dive with you on the Brady Bunch and other things. What a nice, down to earth man. I just saw a movie I remember from my rebellious pre-teen years... "Wild In The Streets" . The late, great Christopher Jones was the star. Barry played Jones' character (Max Flatow/Frost...a rebel 🙂) as a kid. I really got intrigued with Jones from that movie. He was certainly an enigma if there ever was one. He had all the appeal of James Dean and a young Marlon Brando. But he gave it all up right at the time of the biggest movie he was in... "Ryan's Daughter". I don't know how much interest you or your viewers would have in him, but I was thinking...if there is someone (his children? Wives? Close friends?) that could tell the real story on him, it may make for an interesting interview. I've read some things. I do know that Quentin Tarantino really wanted Jones to come out of retirement for the role of "Zed" in "Pulp Fiction". He turned it down. He passed away in 2014.
Interesting. Thanks for your thoughtful comment.
How enjoyable! He's so handsome, too.
Yes he’s such a beautiful guy inside and out
Groovy!
He sure is.
I remember when the Brady Kids made an appearance on Dick Clark's American Bandstand.
Me too. They were great!
Good one.
Thanks.
I agree 100% with Barry about the creators unrealistic struggle to keep the kids young. I was just mentioning this a few days ago in regards to them keeping Cindy in those silly pigtails long after she had grown out of them! They were adorable when she was small, but I feel, they should’ve embraced a more stylish or appropriate hairdo for her.
I agree 100%.
wow cant believe he has the original tiki...thats got to be worth millions
Yes it’s very valuable
If only I could have been his MARCIA, MARCIA, MARCIA.
I’m sure he would have loved you!
💯👍😊
❤️❤️❤️
Barry seems to be a well grounded individual. Frankly, l didn't care for his acting as it seemed slightly superficial. You've grown remarkably well as an interviewer, Harvey.
That’s so kind of you. Thank you so much!
I thought that residuals stopped once the show is public domain. I’m shocked they stopped so much earlier, but thankful the kids all had responsible adults looking after their finances until they could make their own sound decisions as adults.
Like you, I was surprised to learn that the residuals ran out so early.
Barry's greatest role was "Wild in the Streets".
Oh yes now I remember. I wish I had asked him about that.
Barry Williams played Janet's date on an episode of Three's Company.
@GeminiladyJackson-xq6hc yes I remember that episode. He was wonderful
i wanted to correct hiim when he said "Barry." It's Greg.
Yup. I screwed up. Sorry.
Someone will have to correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought I heard/ read somewhere that Chris Knight did not have a happy home life. If that's the case I wonder what Mr. Schultz missed when it came to observing his parent(s). I'm not holding him responsible in any way, I'm just curious 🤔🤷😵💫
I never heard that about Chris Knight
I just finished reading Maureen/Marcia's book -- not always a pretty story.
Haven’t read it yet.
I read the book, too and was shocked that Maureen McCormick got involved with drugs .
@GeminiladyJackson-xq6hc me too
Greg, Greg, Greg.
Yup. In the flesh!
@@harveybrownstoneinterviews8980 Nice flesh (blush, blush). But I always loved his eyes.
@MsBackstager yes indeed. He’s gorgeous
Maybe we were 14..
I want to see cousin Oliver aka get interviewed
Hasn’t anyone interviewed him?
Great interview. As you will see, many actors have connections to get into the business. I wanted the same life yet didn’t know anyone plus not living in Los Angeles or New York it becomes very difficult. Hard work, training, location play an important part of creating opportunities. Very simple.
One other thing…the whole Robert Reed situation for me is very simple. He should not have been cast as that part. Cast someone else….he wasn’t that great. Definitely not a Hugh Beaumont.
Yes everything you say is true. I desperately wanted to be a talk show host from my earliest years. So glad I was finally able to make it happen. Thank you for watching our little show!
Brady Bunch was not reality. Not a fan of this show.
Oh well, can’t win em all!!
Hmmm, interesting how people make "negative" comments about a video, but even odder is the fact they check out videos in relation to a topic they don't even like! 😲
Tell me about it!!
