Always check pressures with the system running. The static pressure is an indicator that there is refrigerant in the system but not if its too little. 27PSI for the low side of about right for l R134a systems. The High side pressure should be 180PSI-220PSI, depending on the ambient air temp, the higher the temp the higher the high side pressure.

Hey, thanks for video!!! I first recharged the freon and a/c still not working. I replaced the A/C switch in my 2002 PT Cruiser and the air is now working! That probably saved me a bunch of money! :)
You just saved me probably at least $1,000. I followed your instructions and it was not the compressor. As you said it was some air conditioner low pressure cutoff switch. Much love to you
My compressor kicked in but made extra loud noises and the cold air goes in and out. I went ahead and replaced the part described in the video. It was $20 dollars. Very easy to do. I am not a mechanic and have no skills and did it in 5 minutes. For a 2006 pt cruiser on autozone the part number you need is MT1191.
Ok, I have spend 1200 euro at the garage shop for a new condenser, maintenance, flushing... They tried everything, but the AC still didn't work properly. I found this video by accident. Ordered the switch, changed it. It runs ice cold. You Sir, deserve a freaking medal
Thanks for this video, even though it didn't solve my '04 PT Cruiser's A/C problem. My mechanic is cool about letting me bring in my own parts, and I ordered a replacement compressor off Amazon early this morning. But after seeing your video, just in case it was the switch, I did the bypass test you demonstrated. Nope, compressor clutch remained dead still, disengaged. Then I checked the fuse (my PT still has one for the A/C), and it's good. So at least I know that yeah, the compressor is needed and it's not the switch. Otherwise I'd be scrambling to cancel the order. Oh, yeah, and we already checked the refrigerant. It's fine.
Excellent video. I suspected that the compressor was faulty but tried you paperclip trick and bingo it worked! $20 for a new switch. Fixed in 5 minutes. Thanks!
I have a 2001 that has refrigerant and blows cold, but randomly stops blowing cold and after a few minutes goes back to icy cold. I'm gonna check if the switch is on a 2001 and do a test. I really appreciate your straight to the point way of finding a simple problem and saving money. I just went through a Kia Sportage that the wiper blades would not return to the stop position. I changed the switch on the steering column, nothing, replaced the miter and nothing. Finally found it was a really in the fuse box that was sparking from bad worn out contacts. Under $30 and it cured the problem. I could have saved myself $150 if I went simple first. The old motor was full of shavings and would have quit soon anyways. Also the switch by the steering column was broken off when I got the car and the replacement wasn't an exact match, so I had to use parts from the old and new one, so it's just as well that that got switched too. 🙏
Great video. I tried the paperclip trick and if i put a paperclip in, the compressor finally engages. However, even with a new pressure switch, it still wont engage, so I am thinking my harness is bad. Somehow when I plug it in, it isn't connecting with the new pressure switch. So I will keep troubleshooting. I am thinking about going to a junkyard and clipping the wires on a switch and then splicing it onto my harness so i have a new plug.
Very Impressive bypass. I too am an owner of 2005 PT Cruiser. I guess this is a common issue with PT Cruisers. I decided to perform the bypass test on my car. I also went ahead and bought the part at my local autozone store. Just, I did not have same luck as others. A/C compressor barely spins. It does spins, just at a very slow rotation. Any thoughts? Thank You.
