10 Bike Hacks for MTB & Beyond

- Life hacks videos are almost never useful sources of information, but they’re great entertainment. Today, we’ll be looking at 10 life hacks just for mountain bikers. Let’s begin.
If you use action cameras the way I do, the cases get filthy inside and out. Just put them in the dishwasher with detergent and everything. They’ll come out looking good as new.
A lot of people work on their bikes upside down like this, but sometimes it’s hard to get to shifters and things on the handlebars. Use two pieces of wood, or bricks to give yourself another few inches of clearance. It’s no work stand, but it gets the job done.
It's amazing to me how many people don't know how to stand their bike up on a curb or log. Just kick the pedal backwards and the drivetrain will hold it in place. Put the pedal forwards and the bike won’t stay up.
Do you know how to true wheels, but don’t have a truing stand? Use zip ties as pins. Now you can watch any tutorial on truing and get your wheel straight as an arrow. I have an old video on this in the description.
Have any of these little patch kit boxes? Well they work great as first aid kits. I was able to fit bandages, ointment, butterfly closures and even tape in one of these. I’m sure it could be mounted under a seat, and of course you could throw it in your backpack.
I know this sounds hard to believe, but I’ve seen several people get their stolen bikes back. Every time, they needed to prove to law enforcement that they were the rightful owner. If you can correctly predict that this piece of paper will be in the seat post or handlebars, it’s hard to dispute that you’re the true owner.
Have a tubeless tire that just won't seal up? Adding particulate to your sealant makes it plug bigger holes. We used glitter for this in another video. While this does clearly work, it also gets messy and makes your sealant clump more.
Hydration packs slosh around when there’s air inside the bladder creating empty space. You can bleed the air out by turning the pack upside down and taking a drink. This is super easy to do and works like a charm.
We all get muddy and sweaty when mountain biking, so you can make a seat cover out of an old towel. Just fold it over at the top, and fasten the ends together with thread, staples, or whatever you want. The pocket at the top keeps the towel in place over your headrest, and it can still be used like a normal towel.
If you use zip ties on your bike this little piece here can be dangerous, so most people use end nippers or even a nail clipper to get them really short. I use a knife to get it totally flush with the fastener.
So that's it, 10 hacks for mountain bikers. If you enjoyed this video, share it with a mountain biker you know, and if not, click the like button anyway and then spew your hate in the comments. Thanks for riding with me today, and I’ll see you next time.
How to true wheels with a zip tie • How to true wheels wit...
Ahh, I'll make sure to take that paper out of the frame after I steal your bike, thanks for the tip Seth! lol
Haha. You could also look into hideing a tile or similar tracking device in there.
chili24137 lol
Or engrave your info somewhere on the frame :)
he'll be sure to show this comment to the police
The reaction of Seth is going to be the same as my profile picture LOL
Love the beach towel seat cover!
+BK-XC Towels available for 7 days on towelspring.com.... nah just kidding
When are you guys doing a colab??
Love Seth. Just like that.
Hahaha, I actually checked to see if towelspring.com was registered. IT'S GOLD, SETH! GOLD!
We're getting together in October! Hopefully my videos will come out soon after we get some rides in.
I’ve used the pedal stand trick since I was 6
T-Perm now ur like 8?
@@josiahgolding1854 hes nine now XD
This is one of my favorite channels when it comes to bikes.
I am so excited to get started on my bike. I spent 200 dollars on it to fix it up. It's an old diamondback Sorrento. Thanks for the vids! This is by far my favorite channel!!
I just found out my self about keeping the bikes standing on the curb with the paddle few weeks ago, that trick is legit!
am i the only one the doesn't mountain bike, but finds these videos extremely entertaining?
You should mountain bike. It's loads of fun, plus you get outdoors and exercise all at the same time. :)
You're not the only one. They are very inspiring though.
i dont know if im considered a mountain biker. dont hit up trails but i spend my time working on them and doing wheelies and going to meets
noah burkhardt actually I don't mountain bike but I plan to and also find these videos interesting
noah burkhardt I'm the same getting an mtb soon
man your channel is the best!! thanks to you I'm learning a lot of tricks with my mtb! so thanks you so much!!!
Definitely!
BIKEY sure thing
BIKEY lol
Saved all my patch kit containers for years, they come in handy all over the place! Dog treats, ear plugs, even made a holder for my Square credit card reader. Nice video!
Man it was roughly 3 yrs ago when this video led me to your channel and thus to mtbing. I'm not into mtb as much as I used to but still love your videos.
I had never thought about butting a paper in my seat tube now I have one in there that says told you so.
Thats brilliant 😂
+Paul Daniel Williams It should be called a "told you so" note!
I engraved my name and number to the bottom of my seat post with a dremel.
I've heard of it before, but I'm the kinda lazy person to not do something like that right away. After watching this, my mtb has a told you so note in the seat tube, now i just have to do the same with the roadie
Lol
finally, someone shouts out the pedal stand
Pedal lock...awesome concept.
Just thinking bout it.
This is my favorite channel to watch when pooping
Same
Best MTB stuff on UA-cam right here. Learned loads of Seth, keep up the good work man :)
You continue to amaze me! Each one of these hacks is golden!
The zip ties for wheel truing are pure genius!! Thanks!
I GOT MY STOLEN BIKE BACK AFTER 1 YEAR IT DOES HAPPEN!!!!!
Your caps lock is stuck on.
@@mikelatta484He DoEsEnT GiVe A fUcK!
@@mikelatta484 no because then the !!!!! Would be 11111
@@lars1264 no. That's not how it works. You have to hold shift for the 1 to become a ! And not caps lock.
My bike got stolen from outside my house (I left it unlocked). After a week or so whoever took it returned it, and locked it. I don't know how, because you need the key to do that, lol
I just trued my tires today and I try and hold the spoke wrench near the treads to check, Zip ties is AMAZING
this actually has some really nice and useful (for a change) things in it. Love it!
I love the pedal curb hack, use it every time i ride my bike without the kick stand!
I’ve always found that the best way to keep cut off zip ties from being sharp is to grab them with pliers as close to the clasp as possible and twist them off
love the pedal curb stand, works like a charm!
I use to like using a knife to trim my zip ties real short, until I nearly sliced through my brake hose trying to get my bike ready in a hurry. Now I just use side cutters and some sandpaper to smooth it down.
Hey that's what I do as well. Cut with side cutters and sand down with 80 or 200 grit sandpaper
Nail clippers are quite a popular hack
+Benjamin Harvey Yeah I need to remember that and give them a try next time
Just grab a pair of pliers, pinch as close to the latch and twist it off. Leaves it with a smooth rounded edge.
use a lighter!
oh man great one with that note in the seat tube, i simply have reciept of purchase, as well as engraved a few parts with my signature for a much more custom look
Thank you for taking the time to share this. Great ideas. Peace, Reese
JEZUS DUDE YOU YOUR WISDOM ENLIGHTEN MY LIFE !

i know this is old but i've been bored so started watching all the old bike hack vids. love how there's like 3 actual dishes in the dish washer then just go pro cases
130k subs dude you really blew up
i joined around 20-30 not long ago
congrats you deserve it
Couldn't help but notice your Black carbon Skeletool 😍 I can't wait to get hold of the new skeletool (no pliers). Awesome video btw this channel is awesome for a beginner like me ✨
Cool now I can lean my bike the proper way!
I love the paper identification hack!
Nice lifehacks and nice video as always. I will use some of them after my broken arm is ready to mountainbike again.
Kids, don't mountainbike in a skatepark unless you are fully aware of what you are doing... trust me im a professional ;)
The Zip Ties Was A Really Good Simple Hack : )
Dude, these are good hacks! Never seen some of those before. Well worth the watch!
Zip-tie tails are the bane of any mechanic's hands. Doesn't matter if it's a bike or a £5mil yacht, somebody at sometime has left a zip-tie half trimmed ready for you to cut yourself on. Earlier today, I stuck my head in a truck and an uncut zip-tie poked me right in the eye!
I recommend Stanley blades, flush side cutters or a cable-tie gun.
The towel-seatcover idea is genius.
"And if not, click the like-button anyway and then spew your hate in the comments" - That got an insta-like from me. Good stuff!
0:20 "If something's dirty just wash it" thank you Seth, very cool
Why do you keep posting useful stuff on the internet jeez!! That's not what the internet is for. Haha great video as always.
Actual useful stuff, great video!
thank you for not being afraid of a sewing needle.
Love your channel. Family friendly, enthusiastic and entertaining. Are you on a big bike trip with Brian Kennedy?
Thanks for the tips Seth....cool that you use a Leatherman Skeletool (I always have a Multitool with me on rides)
These videos are really useful for me since I got a mountain bike a couple weeks ago
iv been here since 60 not 60k not 600 but 60 subs keep it up

MP Dope are u norwegan im too
I found the trick with the pavement and the paddle all by myself someday :) it was totally a eureka moment
The knife was the Leatherman skeletool for anyone wondering.
Hope there's more vídeos like this one. Thanks!

Am not a dad but, good morning!
Thank you soo much for making your youtube your content is amazing and your bikes are insanely nice
OMG I LOVE WOODBURY DELI I CANT BELIVE U GO THERE
+Jack Burns it's a seriously good deli!
It's great because that seem to actually care about their customers
In one of your bike hacks videos you recommend using WD-40 to get scuffs off the paint. I have a satin finish on my bike and I use a magic eraser to remove scuffs. It works great!
0:20 I use the same spatula as seth!
People used to put ground black pepper in their radiators as an emergency fox if they had a pin hole leak. I never tried it but the concept is the same as glitter. They clog the hole from the inside. Good tips.
but did we really ride with you today?
yes
No stfu its non of your business
OMG Thank you for the ziptie truing method!! I need to true my wheels but don't have a trueing stand
Instructions unclear: mountain bike stuck in dishwasher
Instructions unclear, pe*is now stuck in seat tube...
These are actually genius! I love it! ❤️
Remove the O-rings before the dishwasher, or you'll cook them.
My first thought was... How did he do the dishwasher shot lol? Love the ending haha! Great as always
Just wondering, has anyone ever *not* skipped an ad?!
Earl yes
rhenry01, I can't remember the last ad i saw with AdBlock. one of the best "hacks" out there
I have watched a few adds all the way through. Though usually only the first time it shows up, after that I skip.
If I like the person making the video, I usually don't skip the ads, that way they get a little bit of money from it.
Earl hu
I enjoyed it! Please do Part 2!
You should do a folding bike torture test!
Like if you agree?
Do more of these. Keep up the good work
Hey!
Do you think a fatbike frame with 29er forks would make a good downhiller?
+Suana Dive I don't think so at all, but I could be wrong!
Seth's Bike Hacks
Maybe we'll never know.
definitely not you'll bounce too much and 29ers are bad for downhill in general
fuckin huck rampage with that shit.
What about a fat bmx with suspension forks on the front (24inch maybe) ?
Love the trick of putting the water proof go-pro shell in the dishwasher to clean it
Hi Seth, I ride a more entry level bike, a Kona Precept 130 from 2016, someone was telling me that I couldn't go tubeless unless I spend around $900, any idea why?
+RoboWarrior They might have been talking about UST tubeless, but "Tubeless Ready" is much more affordable. There's also "ghetto tubeless" which surprisingly worked the best for me. Check out my video on converting Maxxis Holy Rollers to tubeless.
+Seth's Bike Hacks alright I will, thank you for the info.
lolz $900 for tubeless O.O I have a pair of Easton Heist 30s that were $520, which also included axle caps, spare spokes and a XD driver, so need to spend near 1k for a tubeless set of hoops :P.
+Seth's Bike Hacks I doubt you will see this but, I'm obviously on a tight budget, I wanted to get a dropper because I hate moving the post every time there is a cool feature up ahead.
I thought DNM's post was too good to be true, until I noticed you had a video on it and had good feelings about it .But my coach mentioned that it could fail during a race, leaving me with with miles ahead and a low post. Thoughts? I do want to drop my post on the go, but that sounds like it would suck
Any bike part could fail, but honestly I don't see the DNM post being more likely to fail than let's say, a Rock Shox Reverb. It seems that with dropper posts, price does not equate to reliability. I find that one of the best ways to research something is to check the reviews on Amazon and judge for yourself whether they are believable. Read the absolute worst reviews, and see which complaints are the most common. The DNM post has received very solid reviews, with very few if anyone having problems with it depressurizing. In fact, I have never heard of an instance where anyone's dropper post has depressurized randomly. You should be good to go!
Love this particular type of video ... Sets its apart from others
Crap !!!!!!! I've been washing my go pro in the toilet !
Short sweet and to the point, I like it!
can you please make a vegan version of this video
EnerstisDan what
Boye
OperationPlay Just stuff some lettuce in your handle bars and a couple of carrots in your seatpost!
Hopefully soy free
wat a soyboy
Shower curtain makes a good seat cover too.... especially for mud and sweat!!
What about bmx
What? Many of these hacks can also be used for bmx
+Lauren Peralta BMX is also a sport. There are BMX races. And even in freestyle, these "dumb tricks" can be alot harder than you might think, and they're exhausting just like riding a trail. Bikes is what connects us all in the end, so why the hate?
Someone, The Buizel bad day, sorry about that. After having so many problems with my MB it and seeing a BMX stay so sturdy it got to me. I apologize.
Lauren Peralta It's fine, It's true that MTB brakes alot, just remember to be nice
Love it Seth!
Thumbs up if you're left handed like me and seth
PizzaPunt and thumbs down if you are right handed?
Seth you're the man! All hacks are amazing, but I love the paper hidden in the seatpost the most! Well, and the towel....I always, up till now have been struggling to keep it on the car seat....:D Happy to learn from you, regards from Hungary!
as always great advice. love beach towel ;- 0
here is a lifehack for you: denture cleaning tablets work wonders on water bottles and hydration bladders. Just fill them up with water, drop in one or two tablets, and close the lid with the drinking nipple forced open. Empty and rinse after the foaming stops. They kill anything funky growing in there, and the foam will even clean the nipple. They also remove the plastic taste from new gear.
Love the hacks gonna help me heaps when i get my new mtb.
Great vid! Have the same shoes 👍🏼
Super great video! Thanks so much, this video helps me out all the time! :D
I had a bmx and these almost never worked but now that i bought a mountain bike these are very helpful
One tip on the knife. doing it like that you can slip and cut something you dont want to.
Hold the knife in your normal hand and place the blade against the cable tie.
The use your other hand to grip around the tube and place your bent thumb against the handle nearest the back of the blade.
Push the knife with your thumb only, no pressure from the hand holding the knife.
You'll have plenty of strength in the thumb to cut the cable tie but you've only got an inch or so of travel and you'll not loose control of the blade.
it's something i've done since i was a kid on model kits and do now at work as i cut calbe ties flush nearly every day
I use these hacks and I'm 9. I am inspired by you and built my own downhill mountain biking trails in KY .
For zip ties, cut the tag about a half inch long, then grab it with pliers flush to the square and twist until the tag comes off. It makes the tag flush with the square and does not require much time to do.
I don't use hack videos for entertainment I actually use them so keep these videos coming seth
I like that wheel truing tip as well as the towel!
That was awesome...I did not know how to stand my bike with out a stand...and..now I know how to do it..thanks seth..
a little more tricky to do but get your details etched/engraved in the bottom bracket tube or head tube, then that way if the bit of paper gets removed you have a 100% back up
these were really useful thanks and keep up the great work
Standing the bike on a curb with the pedal - mind blown.
For your zip ties a much safer and cleaner way is to grab the tail end with a pair of pliers as close to the lock as you can. Then just spin the pliers until it breaks off. It leaves it smooth and rounded off.
0:38 - now i feel a bit dumb that i did not though about that. It even protects the grip too.
Thanks, i'll keep it in mind.
Carburetor choke cleaner is a great way to clean your chain and gears. I would go into auto zone and purchase a can. No rags necessary just spray off all the road grime{won't work on heavy stuff, I am riding around town in LA}. In the same trip I pick up chain lubricant. Both of the shelf at a auto store. No tools needed and your drive train is clean and lubricated
I found that the best way to get zip ties to be smooth is after tightening the zip tie to take a pair of pliers and grab all the way down and then twist the left over part of the zip tie off, it always comes off smooth with no sharp edges at all. That's what we did at my shop before our new zip tie gun.
Nice one Seth best hacks video I've seen in a while. That with the paper in the seat tube is a petty good idea!
awh Seth you beat me too it! was just about to make one of these vids !! :b
BEST BIKE VIDEO EVER .... I DIDNT KNOW THE CHUNING TIP
