  • In this episode, I tackle some pretty heavy beautification on my 1989 Gravely 16-G rear-engine garden tractor. I also fix the mower deck, front hubs, tires, broken seat mounts and a bunch of other little stuff.

    Also, I am a disabled veteran. I have been able to utilize my medically retired time (which would have been a very boring life) by becoming a Gravely enthusiast and making a hobby of it. I am a auto mechanic by trade, and I was a tank mechanic in the military, but because of my disabilities, I had to downgrade my hobby to something smaller in order to continue maintaining an interest in meachanics. If you haven't already, I'd like to invite you to join GTCOA. You would be of great assistance to the group, just as it has been to you. Welcome to the world of Gravely. I look forward to seeing more of your videos.

      As long as you're building something! I'm glad you're able to have a hobby you enjoy despite your limitations, all about perseverance! I was familiar with GTCOA through the website, but I wasn't aware of an actual, active organization. I haven't messed with Gravelys much since this project (mostly because it just hasn't broken yet, haha) but I'd love to be a part of the community.

    Nice work, both on the Gravely and on an entertaining video. You have good subject matter, good hosting/humor capabilities, and a good grasp of how to get good/interesting/clear shots...sound's even good. Seems like these should have more views, but what do I know. Oh, and also, upload in more than 720p if you can!

    It appeared that you engaged the PTO lever quickly. If you did, you shouldn’t. This action can cause damage to the PTO clutch inside the tranny case. You DO NOT want to take that apart. Well taking it apart is easy, reassembly is more challenging. Engage the PTO clutch lever slowly. Another suggestion: when starting to move forward drop the RPM’s on the motor to almost an idle and then engage the pedal for forward movement. High speed take off can cause undo on the clutch used for forward direction. Adjusting the clutch is moderately easy, but annoying. VOE
    Oh, very surprised that there is no oil filter on the Kohler. I have a slightly older 16, and the Kohler has a spin on oil filter.
    I’ve had similar issues with my 50” deck. I’ve replaced most nuts with lock washers and/or lock nuts. They still manage to come loose. I notice when the deck isn’t mowing correctly: uneven mow pattern and/or odd noises coming from the deck, that the deck hardware needs attention.
    Good job on the restore.

      Thank you for the information! I have since been more gentle on the PTO. Trying to avoid that rebuild. I love the bulletproof nature of the all-gear drive, but taking it apart is intimidating. Nylock nuts are a must!

      I have a 1997 vintage 16g which I dare say looks almost new. 16Gs came without an oil filter, but there was a kit to add one. the oil filter was reserved for the 18 and 20G tractors. In later years the 16 and 18g had the same M18 Kohler engines, and the oil filter was one of the differentiating features

    if you want to mount a snow blower you will need the pto shaft and bearings that mount in the hole of the front axle, and two mount plates that bolt on to the sides at the front of the "frame".
    Very nice rehab, looks worlds better!

    You silly man! Beautiful work and lovely commentary! The hand gesturing is a nice touch- reminds me of the old Soupy Sales show. You drain that tranny by removing the lowest bolt behind the right wheel. I have the same tractor, but a year or two older, the first year Gravely put the Kohler twin on it instead of the single cylinder Briggs 16. Your power drop off may just be a governor adjustment. Thanks for a great video!

    Beautiful workmanship. I know this video is a year or so old. That being said, I hope you see my comment because I have a need to know. On your fast time segments, I noticed while you were cleaning and painting the various parts and wheels that you were doing something with the torch. Would you please explain what you were doing with the torch? Also, what was the purpose of "burning" the underside of the deck, and what flammable liquid did you use?

    • @bakedbeansgarage116
      @bakedbeansgarage116  12 днів тому

      Thanks, man! I heat the parts with the torch to sweat out any moisture and open up the pores, it just gives better adhesion. I was cleaning the deck with brakekleen and figured I'd just light it to get some heat into the metal before I painted it.

      It warms up the metal to open the pores and burns off anything that still might be on there. It makes for better adhesion.

    Nice Job. I have a 16G, that won't start, and I need to push it out of the way, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to get it to move. I've seen lots of videos for many other makes which have a transaxle bypass lever, but I can't find a similar thing on the Gravely. What am I missing? The brake is not on, it's in neutral, but I can't move the thing. Any idea what the secret to pushing a Gravely G16 is?

    • @bakedbeansgarage116
      @bakedbeansgarage116  7 місяців тому

      Hmmm, they should free wheel just fine in neutral, although with some resistance. If the brake and pto are off and it's still stuck you might have another problem.
      There is no free-wheel lever since it's all gear drive.
