Yeah, I totally never expected that voice. If she keeps this up her star is gonna rise even faster than it is. God we so need MUSICIANS like this. I bet she'll never do 37 costume changes or have choreographed dances at her shows either. Thanks God.
Unfortunately, due to MTV and the current music trends, way too many people listen with their eyes than their ears. Not saying Tal isn't an attractive girl, but she's not what most people consider to be Covergirl material. If the record execs of today were around in the 60's and 70's, we wouldn't have The Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Janis Joplin, or any of them. We'd consider Marilyn Monroe and Twiggy to be musical geniuses. Sad.
Been hearing about this bass playing chica for a while now and finally got around to listening to her. While her 4 string work is great, her voice is what puts her on the map for me.
Beloved singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen died last week at the age of 82. Most famous for penning the hauntingly poignant ballad “Hallelujah” among other songs in the past 40 years, as well as poetry and novels, not many people were aware that Cohen was born and raised Orthodox, spent some time involved in Buddhism then returned to his own form of Jewish observance in the 1980s. He was a practicing Jew until his death.
interesting perspective.theres a transitional point referred to here, could you, would you explain? please?to me..I am truly interested.thanks.(from Detroit, Mi.)
drummer and bass player ? they make the difference betwen good bands and others : Cream, Police, The Who have fantastic drummer and bass player and we all remember them because of that.
bub yacobozzi Looking at Tal when she's playing is like watching a Cat bathe in the sun on a windowsill.Totally mesmerizing. Thank You Lord for giving us Tal Wilkenfeld.
Holy shit. She's playing a song with just a bass. Might I add - it actually sounds good. I'm fifty six years old, and listen to all music genres. Never have I seen this. Well done. Well done.
I just love her bass tone, and this is the first time I've heard her sing, great performance and arrangement. This song by Leonard Cohen is about him reflecting on his relationship with the great Janis Joplin who sadly passed away far to young.
I'm lost ,just a bass and her voice made me blow my head, Joni mittich, carol king,Joan baze, this one were be the future hope she sing with that soulful style,
Wow, Tal! I've loved your playing with Jeff Beck for a long time, but this is the first time I'm hearing you sing! What a beautiful voice, and a fantastic rendition of this piece. Fantastic!
Actually, there are so many great cover versions of Cohen's songs around by artists who gave them their own. Sting and the chieftains made an Irish folk version of "Sisters of Mercy", that I love better than the original, there is Jeff Buckley's glorious version of "Hallelujah" of course, Peter Gabriel's version of "Suzanne" which is hauntingly beautiful, Leonard's trusted old collaborator Jennifer Warnes did a somewhat poppy but catchy tribute album "famous blue raincoat" which actually lead me to discover Leonard. I think, Leonard's gift as a songwriter lies in the simplicity of his songs. They are inspiring and therefore not the most difficult to make them their own. But I agree with you on Tal Wilkinson's performance here.
I'm not surprised to see her performing like this, after all we've all seen her play and we all know that she has amazing talent. She's just showing us more of that talent, the next step as it may well be. Tal is just stepping out, she's becoming the total musical artist and I for one, and you for another can't wait to see where it all will lead.
Cohen, unbeknownst to himself, wrote this song just so Tal could perform it this way. She is right there with Hendrix, Dylan, and all the other legacy stars that tapped the forces of nature.
The Chelsea Hotel. Many moons ago , I met Tal for the first time at Danny's Chelsea Guitars on W23 St, on the first floor of the Chelsea Hotel in NYC . Tal walked into Chelsea Guitars. A small girl with small hands, a huge head of beautiful curly hair , an electric smile, and a mountain of talent and soul when she picked up a bass. Me , Danny , and G.E. Smith listened in amazement as Tal played. I havent seen Tal in a while. Call me Tal if you need your body guard. Im still the same number. Stay out of harm's way.... Mango
Amazing musician ... first time I've heard her sing. Every time I see her play I'm always impressed with how much ground she covers on the fretboard with those small hands. She is certainly one of the best bass players (male or female) on the scene right now. And she happens to be a terrific singer .... who knew?
I was a teen when Leonard Cohen released " suzanne". and the Chelsea Hotel.. I think he would approve.. well done young lady.. well done. in fact.. VERY Well done.. love your voice
I keep coming back to this when im on my lap top.. and have it playing in the background.. never fails . I stop what im doing and open it up. and sit for a minute.. still just blowing me away with your music.. amazing.. Congratulations on the award , well deserved.
Don't know why I haven't seen this one before. Love that Tal uses a bass guitar as the only accompaniment on one of Cohen's most poignant songs. Love it!
I am pretty bummed that this is the first time ever I hear you sing. This is just Beautiful. You are an amazing bassist, I love your voice even more. I'll be looking for that album & if you tour.. Please come to Dallas. Would love to see your show. Thank you
Wow Tal Wow. I've watched the Ronnie Scott's show multiple times but this solidifies my belief that you need your own band. Please upload more singing!
I think this woman is the new blood in the music world. She is beautiful inside and out, talented as LeBron James in her niche, and all over the world. My admiration for her is immense.
This is something Jaco did not do. He could have, but they killed him. All the best, Tal. I just love this. Listened 5 times over. Oh my, women like you actually exist. My heart is with you.
Tal, many thanks for posting this performance. I'm used to watching you perform upstage of many a legend, but it's always refreshing to see talent like you step downstage to the center position. I've worked... most times stage left... of countless local and, oftentimes, global musicians... and I admire your work. You certainly make it look easy. This performance is natural, sultry and a little whimsical... all in one setting. Keep up the great work. You may know that many of us believe you are carrying the banner for young musicians who have garnered highest respect... and by virtue of your performances.... are passing along what we believe is "real" music rather than computer-driven drivel. Thank you. -- RR P.S. -- I would have blown a monkey dart at the guy who talked over you at parts of this performance. If you ever see a blow dart in someone's neck in your audience... it was me.
this is so visceral, shinny, bumpy, want to be there to share the moments, feel like i can smell the hallway, see the strident hairs on your fist... you have a new fan thx
All the texture. I was so impressed and thankful Jeff picked her up,seen the Ronnie Scott gig in 07, and now she can sing. I hear like a Bob Dylan or something; and of course a great song to display it. God bless you.
Couldn't agree more with Rob Rutz - you are absolutely amazing and your ability is never ending. I've played bass for ±40yrs and you make me hang my head in shame :) keep inspiring us Tal . . . . . . you rock!!
Yeah, I totally never expected that voice. If she keeps this up her star is gonna rise even faster than it is. God we so need MUSICIANS like this. I bet she'll never do 37 costume changes or have choreographed dances at her shows either. Thanks God.
I truly wish more people saw things this way, so that the shit music wouldn't sell and only artists (REAL ones) like Tal would be famous... :)
I concur Renaki.
Unfortunately, due to MTV and the current music trends, way too many people listen with their eyes than their ears. Not saying Tal isn't an attractive girl, but she's not what most people consider to be Covergirl material. C Fralick haha twiggy. no shit.

shit she opened her mouth and blew me away again..
Been hearing about this bass playing chica for a while now and finally got around to listening to her. While her 4 string work is great, her voice is what puts her on the map for me.

It's very cool to see her progression from a young bass phenom to a mature and growing artist. Awesome.
+TheDkjayjay I was referring to her just being an instrumentalist to vocalist as well.
In Hungary we say the drummer is the best friend of the band, or
he's not yet a musician, but he's no longer part of the audience either :)
interesting perspective.theres a transitional point referred to here, could you, would you explain? please?to me..I am truly interested.thanks.(from Detroit, Mi.)
drummer and bass player ? they make the difference betwen good bands and others : Cream, Police, The Who have fantastic drummer and bass player and we all remember them because of that.
"Some people" know absolutely nothing about music, apparently.
Rest in peace, Leonard. We love you.
didn't expect such a deep and sultry voice
My sentiments exactly.
bub yacobozzi Looking at Tal when she's playing is like watching a Cat bathe in the sun on a windowsill.Totally mesmerizing. Thank You Lord for giving us Tal Wilkenfeld.

Might I add - it actually sounds good.

I'm 51 years old and inspired again! Thank you! God bless you!!!
Likewise Sam and i am 65.
I just love her bass tone, and this is the first time I've heard her sing, great performance and arrangement. This song by Leonard Cohen is about him reflecting on his relationship with the great Janis Joplin who sadly passed away far to young.

Very well put!!
Tal never disappoints. I love when she sings! Beautiful!
Dear God.....that was as beautiful as she is.
Tal Wilkenfeld. Show stealer. and she's played with some of the best.
Your smoky voice absolutely goes with the bass.
TAL... You are GORGEOUS... In more ways than one !!
Have always had a soft spot for a mezzo voice. Her voice complements the bass well.
Wow, Tal! I've loved your playing with Jeff Beck for a long time, but this is the first time I'm hearing you sing! What a beautiful voice, and a fantastic rendition of this piece. Fantastic!
You just got to love Tal, beautiful gifted player.
Not easy to take on a Leonard Cohen song and make it your own,.. Nailed it.

bonjour Tal Wilkenfeld vous jouer comme une déesses avec un visage d'ange je suis émerveillé par votre talent longue vie a vous
very nice! The sound of the bass reminds me of Charles Mingus , and the voice of Joni Mitchel . wonderful
Unspeakably beautiful.

Somehow I had never heard that song before.. What an amazing rendition of a wonderful story. Tal is a gift to all music lovers.

We've been groovin' on the Jeff Beck gigs for a few years now, but I had no idea you could sing so beautifully. Magic performance.
Very very very nice => magic. Respect for the advanced audience there. Almost nobody screams, whistles or claps during this kind of ambient song.
I keep coming back to this when im on my lap top.. and have it playing in the background.. never fails . I stop what im doing and open it up. and sit for a minute.. still just blowing me away with your music.. amazing.. Congratulations on the award , well deserved.
Wow! I have always admired her bass playing, but I didn't know she could sing so beautifully, too! Talk about multi-talented.
Grace for us all.
Don't know why I haven't seen this one before. Love that Tal uses a bass guitar as the only accompaniment on one of Cohen's most poignant songs. Love it!
