Thanks for the demo, that's impressive. I hope I'll never let my stems rot this way In such a case with dead-stuck stems, do you think a drop of penetrating oil would help loosening ? Or soaking the top of the valve in a chemical flush which may clear some of the corrosion ?
Usually you can tell when it is so corroded that it will not budge, but it would not hurt anything to try penetrating oil. About the chemicals; the valve stem is made out of an aluminum alloy, so there may be some chemical that would dissolve it. I am not sure what chemical that would be though. I do not think there would be a chemical that would distinguish between the valve stem and the corrosion.

A chemical able to dissolve aluminum while leaving the brass valve untouched would be great at the end of the job, to clear the remains of the threaded part of the stem without risk of damaging the valve inner thread... I'll do some research about such chemicals.
I usually use a solder scraper also known as a triangular knife and a brass bristled brush. To get into the threads you can use a needle spring from a woodwind instrument.

My valve buttons... all 3 are stuck can not remove them to change the stem felts what can I do ?
