What I love about Steeleye Span is that you can watch five different live performances of the same song and get a totally new experience each time. True musicians!
@Dug Wolfe I'm jealous! Never seen them live and I live in Japan now, so chances are low. You got the spelling right, just added in a couple of spaces 😄They're true musicians, treasures of the UK!
@Dug Wolfe That's really kind of you. Maddie's last gig!? She's not singing on the other 2022 tour dates? I'll have missed out on something special there. I did have an idea a while back to head over in October and catch one of the dates, but the COVID situation makes any planning tricky. I have a "local" bar here where the bar-master, after learning I was British, asked if I like Steeleye Span! I was flabbergasted. A Japanese bar owner knew Steeleye Span! His bar plays mostly UK prog rock but also folk. They have fans everywhere! Enjoy the show!
Saw them live in Dublin in the early 70s. It was an incredible experience. Not the least of which we were behind a row of dedicated weed smokers and came out high as kites!
Saw this line up twice in Brisbane, Australia. In 1975 and, then, after their reunion in 1982. Magic both times. Our kids grew up on this stuff. In fact, the youngest was less than a year old when we took him to the 1982 concert - we couldn't get a babysitter and weren't going to miss the gig.
Not even Fairport when Sandy Denny was with them? 😉They crapped out after she left but I think they were as good if not better than Steeleye. I saw Steeleye around the time of this tour and had the pleasure of meeting Maddy, Tim, Rick and Peter.
Around 17 years ago I had the pleasure of seeing them live. I can honestly say that they had the most perfect sound balance and made the best sound I've ever heard in an electric/folk/rock style group. Every element was presented perfectly. Fantastic musicians who know how to please an audience.
Sadly, I never had the chance to see Steeleye Span perform in any of its iterations. I was traveling in the UK in 1976 and was able to purchase tickets for to see Maddy Prior and June Tabor in concert promoting their newly released “Silly Sisters” LP. Great show with wonderful backup musicians!
This really is when the classic line-up (Maddy, Peter, Tim, Rick. Bob and Nigel) were at their peak both in popularity and musical creativity. I saw them at Hammersmith Odeon one December and they gave away the box office receipts to the audience as a Christmas present! Pound notes rained down on us all and I collected enough to pay for my ticket!
It was my 70th today and I was singing all around my hat big time I can't walk cos stroke but my god I will always love steeleye span thank you for years of pleasure xxx
I was there when they showered us with cash. They came to the pub next door before the set. What year and month was that. The notes came down in bundles and there were fights to get it - I got a few quid as well!!!
@@johnsime4644 I think 1976. I thanked Maddie Prior when she did a meet and greet following a Steeleye Span gig at the Waterside Theatre Aylesbury in 2018. Lovely lady.
Thank you for posting this performance of steeleye Span. I was lucky enough to see this line-up a couple of years later and is still the best gig I've been to. The band, for me, were always so rooted in their folk/rock mastery and could sing and play with more real soul then any of them. However, since this line-up changed they have lost that mo-jo.
Way back when , a friend told me to get the new album by Steeleye Span . She meant Steely Dan. Her mistake , my benefit . I was confused at 1st though.
I saw them open for Procol Harum in Detroit October 1973. It was an transforming event for me and I have never forgotten it. Maddy was, and still is, amazing!
Hi Noxema. I saw them at the Forum also. It was Jethro Tull's "A Passion Play" tour in July of 1973. I had never heard of Steeleye Span before. When they opened their set they were all wearing costumes that looked sort of like colorful Christmas trees and they were twirling around as the music started. Definitely got my attention. Then the costumes came off and they did a lovely set. Great show. And of course Jethro Tull was unbelievable.
@@Wotsitorlabart Ah! So that's what the costumes were. Yes, they wore long colorful ribbons. It was a fabulous way to start the show. It was also a fabulous way to be introduced to the wonderful music of Steeleye Span. Thanks for explaining this to a somewhat ignorant American. It's great to finally know this.
I was told that in Scotland in the old days, a groom would kidnap his bride to be and come dressed as a gypsy. There are a zillion variants of this song. I do one out of No. Carolina called Gypsum Davy. Also The Raggle Taggle Gypsies, O. Very nice version from Steeleye. Also, you can find Martin Carthy, Norma Waterson & Eliza Carthy doing Raggle Taggle Gypsies O.
The first version of this song I ever heard was by Incredible String Band. The young lady was called Eloise, unmarried, she was 15 years old and pursued by her father.
Maddy Prior was my goddes , together with Patti Smith , when I was 16 . I was so in love that it hurts 😊…ah those were the days ! Great time .Peace out to those who still remember…
This song is a standard death and resurrection song, and songs of this type are found pretty much worldwide. It celebrates nature's rhythms, and as such, is pretty much immortal.
i totally agree with you ,,,,but what if the gypsy had a 12,inc cock and the rich man had a 2,, inc cock ,,?? maddy obviously did not think about this . god bless cyran066.
My husband (boyfriend at the time) introduced me to Span in the 70's, have loved them ever since, Maddy has a voice you can only dream of owning.
LOL, I turned my college girlfriend on to Steeleye Span back in the '70s.

Love Maddy's voice.. So powerful yet angelic. There will never be another like her.
So true
Annie Haslam.. Ann Wilson.
Her voice is v distinctive and she rightly has a place beside Sandy Denny, June Tabor, Annie Haslam, and I would add Maggie Reilly
May we keep her for a LONG LONG TIME!

It's also similar to the Gypsy Rover.

I liked the song, the performance, and I loved her lead vocals. But I thought her "gypsy" comment was rather derogatory.
You obviously don't know any gypsies then
@@paullavan3097 I think it's you (and her) who don't know any gypsies.
