That was so wonderful on Mike’s part to mention and say those wonderful things about Stanley, because Stan was not given the credit he deserved for his harmonies. When Howie came in Tom made that remark “now we have a good harmony, singer” and I just thought that was so mean spirited of him .Who has been doing your harmonies for all of these years. It was Stan Along with Benmont, but mostly Stan.
Stan was a great harmony guy, but I think what Tom meant was that Howie could hit those angelic high harmonies that Stan (and to be fair, most guys) couldn't really reach. And that was what they wanted to go along with Tom's voice. I don't think he was meaning to crap on Stan's singing, just that Howie had that singular quality he'd been hoping to find.
This was the first tour I seen Tom Petty & HB . It was March of 1983 I was 14 . It left a mark . I had seen him 8 more times throughout the years including The Akron Rubber Bowl with Bob Dylan . What a time for concerts . TP&HB 4EVER🎩🎸💘
Absolutely, this is great, but I wish Stan had been there. Though in a way, he was there via multiple references and great appreciation. Stan was hugely important to the band, great drummer, great backing vocalist, outgoing personality who always had interesting things to say. Maybe they should have had Phil Jones there too, as he was essentially the "Sixth Heartbreaker" at the time, part of the band from the Damn The Torpedoes tour through Long After Dark. Plus Phil was the inspiration for the song "Heartbreakers' Beach Party".
@joannmartinez8295 I was thinking about that. It could well be that it just didn't fit his schedule. Or, maybe he didn't want to fly across country just to sit on a panel for an hour. Hopefully, there will be other opportunities for Stan to be included. I should say, even without him there, I very much enjoyed it. Brought back tons of memories. Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers was my favorite band - and I feel lucky to have seen them live 13 times (including twice in Gainesville), though I wish it was more. After watching, I found my dusty old VCR and hooked it up, then unboxed some ancient VHS tapes from the 80s and 90s, and it turned into TP and the HBs night. I'd forgotten I even had stuff like 'Pack Up The Plantation Live' and several old MTV specials. It reminded me that 2026 is getting very close. It'll mark 50 years of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers!!! I hope to see a 50th Anniversary panel that includes Mike, Benmont, Stan, and Ron Blair! I have a feeling they will try and make it happen.
Yeah❤ I cant wait to listen to this old but new again album❣️ What a thrill for Adrianne to be listening to the TPHB archives❣️ I love how articulate and sincere she is❣️ We Got Lucky to have her, kept it coming❣️
I'm so glad to be seeing this. I had only heard snippets of it while in the car driving around. But, why do Mike and Adria feel the need to wear sunglasses? Are they too cool for school?
Tom also usually wore sunglasses during interviews. Some people are more comfortable in situations like this with their eyes a bit hidden. Also the lights are probably super bright and annoying.
@THEItchybruddah I didn't know. I 've been a nurse for my entire life and more familiar with cancer and cancer patients than I rather be. I certainly hope that he'll be OK . Head and neck cancers not, not a good thing.....not that any are. 😢
He has previously said he has had recurring tongue cancer. His wife has posted in 2024 about him having surgery to replace part of his jaw. He is one brave guy, as well as supremely talented.
@@mairianncullen8753 OMG. So sad to hear that 😢 ❤. Not good....wish it was just the dental work that I originally thought. But thank you so much for the information. Will be putting him in my prayers. This must be hard on them all, but especially Mike. : (
Never Be You (fantastic song - co-written by Benmont), Turning Point, Keeping Me Alive, etc, should have been on the album. Iovine over-analyzed it and I do still blame cocaine. haha
What's going on with Benmont's voice ? He also was holding a tissue up to his mouth at times.....sounds to me, that he may have had some major dental work done and that's what I think. Anyone else ??
Three goes of tongue cancer in 10 years is what he said on Sirius radio some years ago. In 2024 his wife posted that he had surgery to replace part of his jaw. One brave, as well as talented, guy.
@@mairianncullen8753 The fact that it's been 10 yrs. is good.... But the fact that it's back 3 times is bad. So much has been done over the last 10 yrs in cancer research and treatments. He has access, financially, to the best of treatments. But, I hope he is also doing some alternative treatments as well. Again, thank you for the information. I haven't been listening as much to TP Radio. I signed up with Sirius just for TP Radio and soon as I get in the car it goes on. Let's hope that damn cancer doesn't come back again. ❤ and the best to Benmont. Thanks again. Take care. 😊
I HATE heartbreakers beach party song. They should of had Keep a little soul on the deluxe version and they should of had the duet with Stevie Nicks- I Will Run To You on the deluxe version.
You could never replace Tom, per se, that's impossible. Having said that, it is my fervent wish that The Heartbreakers would reform and do a limited run of shows with somebody, or several somebodies, doing lead vocals. I think that would be received well.
Absolutely not. No way in hell. No one could "replace" Tom. This wasn't like when they needed a new bassist or drummer. Tom was the songwriter, he was the hub of the band and the reason for its existence. Not to take anything away from the other guys, they're all amazing, but if it weren't for Tom and his writing, the band would not have existed as it did and certainly would not have been as massively successful as they were. You can't just stick some random other dude in there and pretend it's the same thing.
Thanks to Mike for that lovely acknowledgement of Stan Lynch's wonderful harmonies with Tom. They sounded great together.
Mike, appreciate you keeping Tom and the Band going! It's the best.
Hi there, Good day to you and it's nice seeing you here.

@@jpwieczorek hey !!!! It was March 19 when I seen them at Richfield in Cleveland!!! So we must have been right after the Michigan show !!! How cool 😎
Would've been nice if Stan Lynch had been on the panel also.

He's always been pretty bitter. To be fair, some people just aren't cool with rehashing things, especially art.
No, we're good.
He should have been included, he was part of the Heartbreakers from the beginning!
I wonder if he was even told about it, or if he refused??

You had a David Bowie haircut you used to sell fast food is one of my all time favorite lines from a song
Thank you so much for posting this! Wonderful discussion and so great to see them all together.
Wow, that was fantastic to watch!!
My favorite Heartbreaker’s album.
Only got to see them once during the Dead/Dylan run. SO glad it was this era of the Band. Stan and Howie REALLY sang great together.

They’ve got heartbreakers beach party out again now we need Going Home and 400 days

Maybe their eyes are more sensitive to the lights ?
Can't recall ever seeing Mike without them
not sure about Adria, but Mike always wears them.
What?? No Stan Lynch on the panel!! It isn't a true Heartbreakers panel without Stan Lynch😮😢
Legit question: what's with Benmont's speech? Did he have oral surgery the day this was taped?
Post cancer procedure(s?) I believe in the neck area. I’m EXCEPTIONALLY thankful he’s still with us. (Same goes for all of them)

I love “ I will run to you”. It’s almost as good as “stop dragging my heart around.”
You were not his friends or family.
I wish Tommy Shaw from Styx would replace Tom Petty so he'll be the new frontman of The Heartbreakers
