I hope Miguel's current popularity means a return to the Marvel 2099 line in general. It wasn't a perfect line, but it had a lot of great concepts, and I think a reboot would work really well today.
The way I like to describe Miguel to the uninitiated is that he is Spiderman out of obligation. He would stop being Spiderman, but it's been one really long and bad afternoon, and every time he comes close to stopping, he is drawn back in because he is needed.

It adds a lot of dimension to Miguel by showing a lighter side to him in his own unique way. Miguel is someone who has seen the horrors of people who have systemized their abuses of power and, seeing firsthand how harmful those kinds of systems can be, starts to open his eyes more to the need for Spider-Man. He’s always had a rebellious nature stemming from his abusive home with his father and later from his relationship with his biological father. He’s always questioned authority and has lamented that those with power are free to do whatever they wanted while everyone else gets squashed. He chooses to be a part of that system purely as a defense mechanism, but he never drops his rebellious streak to the point where Tyler Stone, his birth father, drugs him just to keep Miguel on a leash. Instead of just backing down from Stone, Miguel opts to once again reject what’s been forced on him by using his own ingenuity to cure himself which eventually leads to him getting powers. He becomes Spider-Man out of circumstance, only fighting out of self-preservation. He only continues to be Spider-Man after he sees the impact that he has on the downtrodden, namely his mother. Conchata O’Hara hates the man that her son has become, but loves Spider-Man, a flip on the Aunt May dynamic where she loved Peter, but hated Spider-Man. With his mother’s appreciation for Spider-Man, he finally feels the pride from his mother that he never got and realizes that he always wanted to be important. It’s just that as Miguel he was only ever important to the wrong people, but as Spider-Man he is important to all of the right people. It’s that realization that motivates him to continue being Spider-Man. Peter David expressly wanted to zig with Miguel where Peter zagged. He’s a different Spider, but still very much Spider-Man. "What color is miguel o'hara's suit" "Blue-black" Lets all agree that it could be black with a pearlescent blue layer that shifts depending on the lightning
Shattered Dimensions was my first intro to Spider-Man 2099, and the soundtrack for his levels were some of the best in the game. Thanks for the reading guide!
Appreciate the video being a concise summary of Miguel's appearances over the years. Makes looking for jumping on points easier than randomly googling things.
I have read the entire 90s 2099 run this winter and Spider-Man is one of the better series that universe had to offer then. I wouldn't say it was great, but certainly good. Doom 2099 and Ghost Rider 2099 were also surprisingly good. Maybe even better. Also, blue looks better.
Quick color discussion; the original comics color almost everything with either just a mid tone and shadow, or a highlight, mid tone, and a shadow. the shadow's are typically just a straight black, so the colors will be defined by their midtones and highlights. For example, Miguel's hair is a reddish-brown with black shadow's, you'd obviously never call his hair black. The midtones and highlights of his suit are shades of blue, to the point where in some panels, his highlight is literally sky blue. It would stand to reason his suit is navy, which would explain the black shadows and blue highlights. I realize they say it's black in the text, but the artist clearly didn't follow that, which was absolutely the right choice, because it provides far more visual dimension and brand recognition, doubly-so post-Miles
Of course Shattered Dimensions put me as a kid on to Spidey 2099 and I fell In love with character ever since,so much so that anytime I read Miguel’s dialogue I hear Dan Gilvezan’s voice. I’ve always held the head canon that is suit is blue-black in the way that if the scene was dimly lit,it would appear black but if you shined a direct light source onto it then it would appear blue.
Really love when Exiles vol 1 gets some love and recognition!! One of my favorite comic runs ever and I can't recommend it enough. Volume 3 has another really fun lineup, shame it got cut so early.
Miguel is hands down my favorite Spidey especially with whole comic Peter bs were having now. Always loved his more calculative and "rational" personality Also black and red >>> blue red
Because of the city being divided into Downtown (Modern day NYC) and Uptown there's potential for a MASSIVE sandbox to play around in with two different vibes. Maybe some of the missions could cross over. Also add in gliding as a mechanic.
I'm actually feeling happy to hear itsjustsomerandomguy. I recognise that Lex Author voice he puts on for Stone. Been a fan of that man since his early days and it's amazing to see you and him collab
Peter David has been one of my all time favourite writers. Guy got me into comics as a young child. From the weird, but I love it, Supergirl run of his, minus one or two parts at the end, to his classic run of Young Justice. Everything he ever touched I have loved. Guy's style is pretty wide, varied.
For the color of the costume, I like to think that the original day of the dead costume Miguel used was black and red but eventually he would upgrade the suit to an actual superhero suit instead of a random costume which has blue and red. ATSV made me love this character so much more than I already did, Miguel was always cool but wasted potential to me so to see him done well on the big screen brought him new life to me.
I like the red and navy blue 2099 because i feel like it just kinda fits what he is. Blue as a primary and red as a secondary, an inverse of the original Spider-Man. He's an entirely different Spider-Man, but not the exact opposite, more like an inversion, still keeping those core themes and values while doing his own thing.
How to read Spider-Man 2099: - Read Miguel’s Dialogue in your head, with Christopher Daniel Barnes’s voice. -Put some Edge of Time OST and ofc his theme from Shattered Dimensions. -Also start talking like him You’re set.
I can’t say much to his character as I haven’t read a ton of his stuff, but he’s always been objective the coolest alternate Spidey. I just love how similar but different he is from the OG
It may be a cop out of sorts but gotta go with what Peter David said. It's Blue Black. Also easily the first Peter David run is the best with manifest destiny being a dope cap off. The art is also the best suited for 2099 Spidey. Also really hope you keep doing these How to Read videos.
Well now, as an update: If you want to read the original canon, Symbiote Spider-Man 2099 is a direct continuation of the series from David's last issue.
It wouldn't be comic books if a character that has a relatively small amount of appearances still didn't need you to hop across books for certain issues to get the full story
As a huge Exiles fan I appreciate the shoutout for their Miguel and just the book in general being just that good. Shame about Claremont’s take on everything but hey, what can you do, it was still a great book
I just finished reading his original run and I just loved so much his interactions with his mother and Xina, their personalities collide so well and tbh I did want them to end up together, it was kind of underwelming seeing how everything just ended as abrupt as possible, I'm still hoping some of the og characters show up in the later comics Honestly this video came just in time as I'm catching up with volume 2, didn't know there was so much more to cover, ngl Miguel is straight up my favorite Spider-Man now
Oh those would be way harder to do. Deadpool and Miguel were somewhat easy because they are relativelly new and don't have *that* many comics, but Frank and DD are a whole different story.
I love how to start reading videos. Please do one on Moon Knight, since I found him really interesting from your videos on him, but I don’t know where to start.
The original 92 run was one of my favourite comic runs ever. Read it alongside the original TAS run by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko as a kid and became a loyal fan of 2099 ever since
OG Spider-Man is the hero we would probably all aspire to be. Spider-Man 2099 is the hero we all probably would actually be. It's why they're both so great.
If I had a nickel for every time a Spider-Man Goblin storyline that was screwed up due to an unexpected writer switch and a character not intended to be said goblin was selected to be revealed as the goblin I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot but it’s weird it happened twice.
So this video finally gave me the motivation to actually pick up peter davids run and I must say it’s been an incredible read. Im about to start the #25 double sized issue and love the book so far. Very excited to finish this one then read some other titles featuring my new favorite Spider-Man Miguel O’Hara
I lean towards his suit being refflective. You remember how Amazing Spiderman toys all had yellow eyes? But in the film the eyes are more dark and like sunglasses, and they only looked yellow in certain scenes where the sky was yellow and it just reflected that. I would go with a similar concept for Miguels suit. It is black. It's just that the night sky of New York 2099 is lit blue and his suit reflects that. But get him in a less blue envoirnment and his suit starts to look black, albeit still a bit reflective.
It coming from the 90's it's easy to see where the colour confusion comes in. To show the glisten on black rather than use white a lot of artists would use dark blue. Black makes more sense but at this point the dark blue just seems more fitting for a Spider-Man (except for Miles). The recent runs where they kinda rebooted the 2099 universe is really good. Great art and interesting ideas they should expand upon cause with all they showed it's a waste to just leave it like that.
I have two ideas to solve the suit color problem: 1- The suit is black, but it becomes blue when exposed to light 2- The suit could be black with blue circuitry, like in the Shattered Dimensions game
I loved Spider-Man 2099 aka Miguel o hara he's really awesome and his suit in my personal opinion was freaking fantastic and badass, heck even as a kid i thought his design was really cool and seeing him being this cyberpunk Spider-Man fighting against these evil corporations is really awesome and badass in my opinion.
@DiegoReviews dude, for Miguel your voice sounds like a good combine of Dan Gilvezan during his youth (2099 voice of Shattered Dimensions) and Reuben Langdon, that's great. And this video came out at a great moment after watching Miguel's review of Edge of Time.
I feel like Miguel's suit is so black, it has a blue tint in the right light. But Neueva York is SO full of bright light that it makes the suit appear blue. I've seen hair dye that does that so that's how I interpret Miguel's suit.
On Miguel's costume I think they could have the best of both worlds by making it black normally and having it turn blue whenever he uses his powers or puts it under enough stress. So for example whenever his claws are out the fabric around his hands would turn blue. They could explain this as a side effect of the unstable molecule.
I actually made an audiobook of Peter David's Spider-Man 3 Novelization a while back. Its shocking to hear he's been going through all this and I'd be happy to donate.
So glad i was introduced to him in shattered dimensions and edge of time, from then on anytime i see him in stuff like ultimate spider man id go "HEY I KNOW THAT GUY"
My personal opinion on the suit color is that the black looks good when tinted with blue in the comics, so maybe they should try a really dark navy blue for 3D interpretations? Sort of find that middle ground where it looks more black in darkness, but looks more blue in light. Idk, I think it could work.
Really does seem like every issue of the original run has a line it that say the suit is black in red, even though like a lot of Batman art it really does look blue
Great video. Always enjoy your stuff Xavil-man. That being said, you really are the only one that gets Random Guy to pop back up in the public eye and as a fellow fan of his and yours, I think that's one of the coolest things ever.
I actually needed this video lol, tried reading the original 2099 like a year ago and then was missing random parts throughout, then tried reading the 2014 comics which apparently necessitated superior Spider-Man which I just couldn’t enjoy
Your videos are always such a treat, dude. You really know your shit comic wise and it makes for a very informative experience. Keep up the good work, cheers.
I love seeing more comic book content, cb movies and games are rad but the occasional comic coverage (that doesn't detail the death of a triple A life long favorite character) is a great sight to see
That is not to say that deconstructions of those downfalls are bad it's just nice to see Xavier talking about something that he's interested in, passionate about or finds joy in

"What color is miguel o'hara's suit"
"Blue-black"
Lets all agree that it could be black with a pearlescent blue layer that shifts depending on the lightning
Sounds really pretty.
Miguel O'Hara is probably my favorite other Spider-Man besides Peter Parker!
Same for me too. Miguel, Superior Spider-Man, and Miles
My favorite webheads are Peter, Miguel, Jessica Drew, Takuya Yamashiro and Mayday Parker
So happy to see 2099 finally get the recognition he deserves
Prayers for Peter David. One of my favorite Spider-Man writers. Spider-Man 2099 just had 2 miniseries and I enjoyed them
Of course Shattered Dimensions put me as a kid on to Spidey 2099 and I fell In love with character ever since,so much so that anytime I read Miguel’s dialogue I hear Dan Gilvezan’s voice.
Always loved his more calculative and "rational" personality
Also black and red >>> blue red
The black makes the red muddier and washed out, purple with red looks better
@@fullmetal2455no just no
An omnibus of Spider-Man 2099 came out last month. It collects #1-46 along with several of the other contemporary 2099 titles mentioned.
It’ll be nice if Insomniac will make Spider-Man 2099. Think about it exploring Nueva New York, and all the amazing fast pace combos he’ll do.
I'd love it if insomniac made a open world Spider-Man 2099 game
How to read Spider-Man 2099:
- Read Miguel’s Dialogue in your head, with Christopher Daniel Barnes’s voice.
-Put some Edge of Time OST and ofc his theme from Shattered Dimensions.
-Also start talking like him
You’re set.
I really like that you clamped down on the comic side of it, since Miguel was already a pretty neat iteration of Spider-Man as is.
I just believe Miguel's suit is a really dark navy blue and has patches of a slightly lighter blue that make it so he has that black blue shading.
I picked up issue 1 in a flea market almost a decade ago, still have it to this day his design is so cool.
It’s funny how both original Spider-Man and 2099 suit design switch from red and black to red and blue
Officially The Definitive Video on THE Underrated Spider-Man. Good Stuff, Bro.
These how to read videos are great I'd love one on every character who you feel like a expert on.
I just finished reading his original run and I just loved so much his interactions with his mother and Xina, their personalities collide so well and tbh I did want them to end up together, it was kind of underwelming seeing how everything just ended as abrupt as possible, I'm still hoping some of the og characters show up in the later comics
Honestly this video came just in time as I'm catching up with volume 2, didn't know there was so much more to cover, ngl Miguel is straight up my favorite Spider-Man now
Another one of these for Ben Reilly would be dope, show why he has so many fans
These comic guides are fantastic. Would love one on Daredevil or Punisher
Oh those would be way harder to do. Deadpool and Miguel were somewhat easy because they are relativelly new and don't have *that* many comics, but Frank and DD are a whole different story.
@@juliiju0484Is Born Again a good way to get into DD comics? im not sure if theres a reboot run or something
@@suicidaltendenciezzzTo read a modernized version of his origin story: Daredevil: The man without fear (1993)
I’ll happily have the 2099 comics shoved down my throat even though I have read almost all of the comics of his already
Honestly, I first heard of him through Edge of Time so I prefer the costume being blue
I don't know, I don't know if I would have money to buy those clothes
eh not really. not all of us are cynical adults like Miguel
Really thankful for this video. I've loved Miguel in all the other media he's part of but never found a proper start in the comics.
We finally did it The og 2099 black design is spiderman 2 we have won
If I had a nickel for every time a Spider-Man Goblin storyline that was screwed up due to an unexpected writer switch and a character not intended to be said goblin was selected to be revealed as the goblin I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot but it’s weird it happened twice.
Unrelated but the Miles stuff post Bendis has been pretty solid, current stuff is very nice.
But Yeah anything with Peter David is always good.
I have two ideas to solve the suit color problem:
1- The suit is black, but it becomes blue when exposed to light
2- The suit could be black with blue circuitry, like in the Shattered Dimensions game
A comic that gets Miguel's suit right. 10/10 best comic ever made!! 😂
I’ve seen a color on one of my mom’s cars that’s such a dark blue it looks black until you look very closely, I thought that was his color
I saw a post on reddit stating that the Miguel in the comics would oppose his counterpart in Across the Spider-Verse
When I get paid I'll definitely donate to the legend Peter David. Dude created my favourite spidey, gotta show respect somehow.
I think Spider-Man 2099 is my second favorite alternate Spider-Man
@GodzillaMendoza How To Read EVERY Spider-Man Comic Next?!?! I And Some Of Us Would Watch It!
My personal opinion on the suit color is that the black looks good when tinted with blue in the comics, so maybe they should try a really dark navy blue for 3D interpretations? Sort of find that middle ground where it looks more black in darkness, but looks more blue in light.
Idk, I think it could work.
Miguel is kinda of a smartass in the comic. And I love him for it.
Really does seem like every issue of the original run has a line it that say the suit is black in red, even though like a lot of Batman art it really does look blue
Figured that I'd like the comic dubbing of Miguels lines, but Major Major points for the Deus Ex theming in the background
I’m so glad I’ll probably live to 2099 just so i can complain that my black 2004 Kia optima isn’t blue now
Great video. Always enjoy your stuff Xavil-man. That being said, you really are the only one that gets Random Guy to pop back up in the public eye and as a fellow fan of his and yours, I think that's one of the coolest things ever.
I respect the use of the Cyberpunk 2077 score in the background.
Great timing! I have just finished reading all of Mile's content and i was thinking about revisiting the future of 2099
I really enjoyed Diego Riveras voice acting
2099 is super special to me and seeing my nephew wanting to know more about him is so cool to see. Also the suit is black :)
Question speaking of Spider-Man 2099 I am just wondering how did you feel about his depiction in across the spiderverse?
I hope the filmmakers behind the spider verse movies make a solo Spider-Man 2099 movie
"It's Blue-Black"
Peter, you genius.
I actually needed this video lol, tried reading the original 2099 like a year ago and then was missing random parts throughout, then tried reading the 2014 comics which apparently necessitated superior Spider-Man which I just couldn’t enjoy
You forgot to mention that in 2099, SHIELD Agents look like Judge Dredd
Your videos are always such a treat, dude. You really know your shit comic wise and it makes for a very informative experience. Keep up the good work, cheers.
The suit is whatever color it feels like that day.
Its gonna be 2099 when they finally get the color right
Miguel Is my favorite spider-man so I’m glad he’s gotten so popular
TIL Miguel’s costume is a Day of the Dead outfit.
Also would love to see you do a video on Scarlet Spider Kaine or Superior Spider-Man
My personal opinion of the color of his suit is that it is definitely black, but it looks better when it’s blue
by the way, the spiderman 2099 LEGO figure is black, not blue.
Perfect timing I’ve been taking comic/manga collecting more seriously and I’ve never read any of Miguel’s books
holycow, itsjustsomerandomguy. Great camio, didn't catch until the bloodhammer scene
