Those 747-400's were really something. And that livery AI had, had to be the best one around. I miss that livery. The sound of those Pratt and Whitney engines, absolutely fantastic. With the 747's on the way out, that's one airplane I'm gonna really miss. Thank you so much for this brilliant video
I think we need to run a campaign to bring back that old livery & king names back! I don't know whether it will work as if muslim names are used our present COW government will star MOOING EN-MASSE! For that ILLITERATE BUFFOONS only ram exist!😢
Definately agree with your statement regarding this livery. The new one does nothing to represent India. I do hope that when the government sells it's stake in AI, that new owners will seriously think about briniging back the centaur logo.
No matter what they build and how big they get 747's will always be the most beautiful planes after the Lockheed Super Constellation. Also get a big kick from seeing names like "Fatehpur Sikri" on them. Great video man.
many people believe that Emirates bribed the Indian Civil Aviation Ministry to stop these flights so that they could have an almost monopoly from the West Coast to India. At its peak there were two daily flights, one each to Bombay and Delhi, from LAX. Now there is a flight out of SFO introduced by Modi to please Silicon valley CEOs. Its dumb that there is a flight out of SFO but not from LAX despite LAX being a bigger market
While I certainly CAN believe your explanation of an 'Emirates bribe' to GOI (Govt of India), BUT, I know for fact, that there never was a TWICE daily Air India 747 service from LAX to BOM & DEL, and that's fact. AI had 1 Daily service, each day that service went onto Frankfurt - once in FRA that same ship went on to Mumbai or to Delhi, depending on the day of the week. if you were a passenger on it and it was headed Delhi, but you wished to go to continue to Mumbai, a 747 from Chicago or JFK would certainly be headed to that destination and they were intentionally scheduled to transit passengers for that reason for interchange service. You see TWO AI 747s of what I captured in the above video because the 1st arrival was awfully delayed flight from the day before (it never arrived the on that day). I know more about AI Ops here because I ...1) knew the AI staff here, they hired me to shoot their inaugural service. 2) I was at LAX almost daily during AI's service here because I wanted to shoot every single AI 747-400 in the fleet on the arrival, a taxi shot, a gate shot, the pushback & taxi shot and takeoffs - this was a lot of work to achieve but I succeeded. I had to do it all OVER again when AI changed the color scheme! This time I was NOT successful because AI ended LAX service and they also started retired certain registrations before ever repainting them.
This video is very well taken . U have covered most of the ships beautifully. The take offs and landings, multiple activities and checks at the tarmac before entering the final taxi way for take off has been very brilliantly covered. The sound effect is exemplary. AIR INDIA 747 - DASH 400 looks very pretty and I am proud to say that AIR INDIA 'S AIRCRAFTS ENTIRE FLEET IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL IN THE WORLD. The Red and White colour combi is superb. They need to improve their inflight services.
I have watched this video at least 5 times already - BLOCKBUSTER! better than any hollywood flick - Steven Spielberg eat your heart out... this video has got everything.. the close up on the engine and the ground staff radioing the pilot is epic!!! SB76.. you're da man!
dude this is like the best video i have seen on youtube..WOW!!!! AI certainly was a favourite at LAX. hope it will start flying to the west coast once again.Cheers.
I'm an old git.........53 now. I remember the first 747 I ever saw on short finals in 1971. It was the pride of the Aer Lingus fleet........EI-ASI.........A 747- 148. It screamed and moaned at 500 feet as she fought the springtime thermals over the council estate of Coolock on short finals for runway 35. From where I stood, it was roughly 1500 feet away, and to the best of my memory, my eight year old frame of a man ran into the house terrified at the notion of this monster falling out of the sky and sending us all to hell. I remember my dad, who was digging the veg patch in the garden calling us all out with crys of 'LOOK, LOOK, followed by cries of 'Mother of Jaysus, how the fuck does that thing stay up there'. The Pan Am and T.W.A 707's were big. This thing was huge. I clearly remember the titles on the side of the fuselage announcing Irelands coming of age.........Aer Lingus Irish International emblazoned in green on a sheer white fuselage. That was the 1970s. Sierra India had just come off the Everett Plant brand new and I was unaware of the significance of what I was witnessing at the time. Joe Sutters design genius was now a part and parcel of my every day life, and looking out for Shamrock 103 bound for J.F.K instigated my life long passion for aviation. Then came the 80s, the 90's the 2000's and now 16 years into the C21the 747 is tired and ready for bed. Inspite of the 747-8 coming online, I feel the 'Queens' Days are seriously numbered and Sutter's design is fast becoming 'Niche' technology. Shannon airport used to be 747 Mecca back in the day. They were dropping in non - stop around the clock for nearly thirty years. Today you'd be lucky to see one a month. The twin jets have won the day. Even L.H.R where I had the good fortune to work with the last of the 70's dinosaurs for ten years in the late 90's / 2000's has seen a steep decline in 747 traffic. I must be getting old. We all are. We all take things for granted, and then we realise........'Oh Fuck.....they're gone' ! Forty five years admiring these beauties, is a very short time. Having said that..........Half a century at the top...........'Top that' ! Best o' luck 380.
This footage I suppose must be in the late 90s or early 2000s. It cannot be earlier than 1997 because the Lufthansa aircraft in 1:51 has the Star Alliance logo on it. And Lufthansa (founding member) found star alliance in 1997
The person who made this video, I am sure he/she must be airport or Air India staff. It is old but well it's a nice video. I have seen these jumbo planes when I use to work at the Airport. Infact I have flown in Sunderban.
First time me and Family flew in JFK from Bombay International 1984 was on Ashoka !At That time we had Multiple stop over , From Bombay we stopped at Abhudhabi , den to Paris final destination NYC!
Sadly, Emperor Ashoka aircraft was the first AI boeing 747 to crash. It crashed just after takeoff from bombay international airport on New year 1st january 1978!!
Thanks, yep..I miss seeing Air India here at LAX but I am happy that I got all their 747s in the fleet when they were serving the airport. And I am happy to show viewers how they appeared at LAX when they were around. Somehow if AI was here with 777 service, it just would not be the same.
Both were Frankfurt arrivals..one was delayed from the previous day and the other caught up with it. The delayed flight departed first followed by the on-time flt.
I wonder if there is a message on the front gear aparatus that states "obejects near you are as close as you think - pray to god and do your job" AMAZING!
Thanks Starboard76 for uploading this video. I have traveled w/ VT-ESP - Ajanta from Mumbai-Newark. Trust me after dozen of international flights that was my most majestic. comfortable, enjoyable flight and mind you that was on time flight. Air India 747 = Palace in the sky. To be Proud of.
Heyy amazing work man!!!!!!loved the whole video and being a indian 747 fanatic.....it makes me sad they have cancelled the 747 series here !!!!!!but i enjoy seeing these videos anytime.......:D
Did you know that Air India's pilots are ex-Indian Air Force pilots? At least, that used to be case about 20 years ago. IAF personnel were expected to heavily memorize everything they see when they are in a foreign country and debrief on return; with the latest technology I wonder what else are they up to now? :)
Once AI was profitable, used to fly to LAX, SFO, Al Ain (UAE) and few in Europe, etc. Good load, profitable capacity. But it was all changed. All under corporate pressure. Private companies bribed officials heavily to shut down those routes, so they can operate on them. Remember Jet Airways got SFO and Milan (Now Stopped). Corrupt Officials has killed this once an amazing Airlines, now it has debt of $4b.
It's the merger with Indian Airlines that has led them to this situation which led to the cash crunch later. Private companies were non existent at the time as Jet used to be the main competitor along with KF and SJ. The govt used to kill the competition by allotting ridiculous slot times to private owned airlines. Vijay Mallya is a victim of this. Though what he did was wrong, the govt sabotaged his entire dream of making Kingfisher one of the best airlines but couldn't do as banks were charging high interest rates and putting him into a debt crisis under the govt's orders. Before the closure the int'l route network was just about to takeoff and they had a340, a380 and a350 planes on order. At least in the case of AI Tata own it now which is exciting and hoping for a turn around.
@ahmadkhanboi hey...every flight you've been on, someone like him has had to make sure 'all is well' before you takeoff. Actually, he's soooo far from that engine it's no danger at all.
Dear Starboard76, I happened to have skippered these big birds into LAX atleast 30 times, I wonder if I might find a matching date and time in one of your clips? Would you be willing to humour me on this? It would mean a lot. Thank you for the wonderful footage, and I thank providence for the combination of the B744 into my fave destination - the City of Angels!
Hi Skip, I'd like to assist, but I do not intentionally burn time & dates onto my video clips. There is a possibility it is digitally encoded..I'd have to check and see. What dates do you have?
Nice video. I really appreciate the trouble you took to shoot this video. I miss the Boing 747 - 400 of Air India. Have flown many times on them to Delhi London and New York. 😊
Fare ye well, "Sunderban" and "Fatehpur Sikri". Took me a lot of time to figure out the name of these babes. What beauties! And the AI livery doesn't seem to get boring to see. Colourful and bright. A Seems like Air India has run out of Indian emperors to name the 747s, that was the practice earlier. They have moved on to names of places. Sunderbans are the mangroves near the Bay of Bengal, and Fatehpur Sikri is an ancient city near Delhi, built by the Mughals.
No they haven't ran out of names. It was just a controversy on naming. Many local people who had faith in some emperors were offended on not naming this glorious aircraft after their fav emperor's name. So, to avoid the controversy, AI stopped using the emperor's names in late 1980s.
Just on the one day two flights overlapped as one was like 18 hours late leaving, aside from that, I was showing how most of the 747 fleet rotated to LAX over a period of time.
@@demedemertdemert5955 well more like get more fuel to complete the trip, plus allow passengers only going to London or Frankfurt to deplane and allow people in Frankfurt & London board the flight as it continues to America. I myself flew Air India 747 'Konark' from LAX to Frankfurt and return.
That livery and the Boeing 747 were just made for each other!
That stunning combination of white, dark red and chrome is just unbeatable. All I'd change is the AIR INDIA font to a sharper font.
Those 747-400's were really something. And that livery AI had, had to be the best one around. I miss that livery. The sound of those Pratt and Whitney engines, absolutely fantastic. With the 747's on the way out, that's one airplane I'm gonna really miss. Thank you so much for this brilliant video
Yes I also MISS OLD AIR India sweet memories.

Now we miss the 747
Flying in Air India 747 gives us the best feeling to be an Indian.
agreed
Wow, beautiful big plane. I love how the windows are done. Gorgeous. 😊
The service was via Frankfurt, Germany..and returned the same route.
Thanks for the comment.
It's amazing watching those massive things take off. It does not cease to amaze me.
Gud old days of 747s ruling the sky
Luks Majestic when painted in air india livery gona miss these plans once they r taken off from service...
I really miss the old logo of Air India it was awesome! especially for Boeing 747-400.
Thank you, that is indeed a huge compliment, Simon is atop the best in aviation videography!
I’m not Indian but I love the country and the livery of this 744
Tomikka Tomikko yes it is very cool and a true classic!
doesnt any one agree that Air india livery Brought Majesty into 747?
Definately agree with your statement regarding this livery. The new one does nothing to represent India. I do hope that when the government sells it's stake in AI, that new owners will seriously think about briniging back the centaur logo.
Yes you are Wright.
No matter what they build and how big they get 747's will always be the most beautiful planes after the Lockheed Super Constellation. Also get a big kick from seeing names like "Fatehpur Sikri" on them. Great video man.

ESP is still flying in 2017. along with EVA, EVB and ESO. Great video Thanks a lot! Best Regards from India

Fantastic video with nice close-up views of these big birds. Liked the condensation over the wings of the last 747 taking off. WOW x 100!!
Air India still retains its old charm in some of its long haul flights..

The old livery was the best, even the aircrafts were kept clean from outside too back then. Its sad and a shame at the airline's present state.
Lovely seeing classic AI 747 vids. Thanks for sharing

The golden days of Air India when we had a huge hub at Frankfurt and flights as far as LAX.
Right, but today things are on right track may take time!

In all 90's Bollywood movies....The lead actor always used to come in Air India Boing 747 Maharaja...
Yep..serving NYC for years, Chicago for a quite a while but LA was short lived just about 2 years.
I love to see old color my Airindia
thanks, glad you like it!
Great footage .love those big planes.Thanks.
This sure beats filming the IA 744 from the in n'n out burger joint!
amazing footage, as always Star.
wow, 2 AI 747 in 1 day??? LAX must be india's favourite destinations....
nice video m8
Coincidental that VT-AIM got picked up by Dubai Airwing. Arguably she had the best post-Air India life out of any of the fleet.
With Air India to be privatised 100% soon, I can only hope they bring back the old livery!
I really hope Air India to privatised.
Back with Tata's!🥳

No I don't work for either. But yes, it does take a lot of practice to not be shaking the camera all over the place without using a tripod.
6:36 Incredible takeoff

Did the last Air India 747 have a fuel leak or something near the APU exhaust?
cool video.thanks.

@indo83gmail ..thanks, but that eas when they were here in LA!..but not anymore.
Thanks
i m impressed....... for ......seen ......this......plane.......
The new colour codeand logo of AI is better than its earlier one
Nice video you got there...
At 4:xx minute, I see 2 Air India 747s back to back. Any idea of the routes those flights were operated upon???
+anniyaninternational One must have originated from Delhi while the other one must be from Mumbai.
The golden age of India Aviation
Really fantastic
WOW - 2 Airindia's @ LAX - can you tell from where they arrived? India, LHR or via JFK?
Via Frankfurt
Excellent 👍🏼
She's so Gracious. beautiful absolutely beautiful.
How did you get the access to film from so up close and side by side?
@mayankkhanna1987 ..thanks for that, correction made!
One flight was probably to Delhi and other one was Bombay!
Is this the biggest flight of air india
How come so many 747 are here
Just on the one day two flights overlapped as one was like 18 hours late leaving, aside from that, I was showing how most of the 747 fleet rotated to LAX over a period of time.
My grandad probably flew one of these .
Can these 747s fly from india to usa nonstop now?
No, they never flew nonstop from India, they always stopped in London or Frankfurt on routes to US.
