The month of May was the most memorable. Nascar saying "we're just gonna race at Darlington and Charlotte until we sort this out" made for a great month.

Sadly Ricky isn’t with us anymore, he died in the plane crash. Rick has an eye for talent I mean look at Larson now! (Hard to have predicted his level of success 7 months ago)
Love the f1 references to Jimmy, absolutely spot on. Love when you guys talk about imsa, f1, wec, indy, etc. I would compare Jimmy more to Schumacher than senna though, the 5 straight titles mirror each other, as well as the 7 championships overall. Both drivers and teams were just a force to be reckoned with.
Jimmie also won titles in 3 generations of car, Gen 4, COT, and Gen 6. I hope his accomplishments are something in time people realize how special they are.
Jimmie will always be my favourite. I was 12 when he won his 5th straight championship and Dale's right, it's hard to comprehend how crazy that is. An insane resume with 83 wins and 7 championships, but somehow it does feel like he's underappreciated.
Oh yea. Johnson's one of the great drivers. He's proving that in Indy Cars. Stellar performances so far in that series. In Detroit yesterday, he qualified last and finished second to last. At least he finished and didn't wade up another car. Really showing that nature driving talent.
Jimmie's unquestionably one of the greatest of all time. I think NASCAR failed to capitalize on his moment like they did for Petty, Dale, and Gordon. It just never seemed like NASCAR tried enough to put Jimmie everywhere they could. They hyper-focused on ways to make sure Jimmie (or anyone for that matter) couldn't dominate.
Jimmy hasn't gotten his accolades but he will. I think in part it's because he made it look so easy. I can remember watching during those years and after awhile it was just a given that Jimmy was going to win on Sunday. I wasn't a Jimmy fan at the time but I now recognize what he accomplished. Jimmy is one of the GOATs and will be missed.
Shamefully, (IMO) Jimmie is the most underrated Cup Champion in the modern era. He (Jimmie) is 110% class as a human being as well as a Cup Champion & ambassador for NASCAR. The sport is going to miss him. It (NASCAR) doesn’t realize it now but there’ll come a day when those statistics folks start talking & Jimmie’s abilities, talents, skills, drive, desire & commitment (to name a few) will come to be recognized. NASCAR owes a lot to Earnhardt & Gordon for ushering in a new era(s) and it is my hope that NASCAR will soon realize what Jimmie has done for the sport. Outstanding episode folks!! Keep them coming. Take care & stay safe. Cheers
I feel like Jimmie never got a nickname bc the ones that had the nicknames like the king and the intimidator set the bar so high. Once he tied them with 7, we all called him 7 time. Most likely his nickname
I read an article (years ago at this point) that called Jimmie "The Dominator". I liked it and thought it fit in the sort of style as The Intimidator. It also calls attention to how Johnson had the sport by a chokehold during his career, especially 2006-2016, we will not see it again.
During his 5 straight championships (180 races) 35 wins (basically a full season worth of winning) 81 top 5’s 117 top 10’s (65% of the time) The first 9 FT seasons in the cup series he finished in the top 5 in points. The ability of that team to take a mediocre day and turn it into a good day. The garage area feared that 48 team for a solid decade because they’re the most unbeatable thing NASCAR has seen in the last 20 years. Dominated every points format thrown at him, every obstacle. Think about how difficult it is to even win back to back titles? The last time it’s been done before Johnson was Jeff Gordon in 97-98 and then Earnhardt in 93-94. Johnson won FIVE in a row. Jeff Gordon averaged a top 5 finish in the Chase in 2007 and LOST the championship by almost 100 points
JJ Nickname is 5 Time!!! I always think of 1997 or 1998 and we would have never thought Jeff Gordon would be shortly beaten by someone even greater than the 24 team with Jeff behind the wheel.
Jimmie Johnson is a great driver and a very good man. However I do remember the time he fell off the roof of a golf cart and broke his wrist during the off-season.
I mean I totally agree, he was under appreciated.......His career started in cup out of nowhere it seemed. He had almost instant success with Hendrick, I think it came as a bit too easy to the casual fan. His personality was vanilla, just not interesting. HE won all the crown jewels (Daytona, Southern, Allstar, Indy) early and often. Earnhardt passed away, Jeff Gordon became the favorite and JJ kept dominating. His cups were all in the old chase format, which literally had him get hot at the last part of the season. (Tony Stewart won a championship this way also), I feel all these reasons are why he became under-appreciated.
To add on the unreal phenomenon of Jimmy's prestige, he did against Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart and an at the dominant Roush team with Kenseth too.... then you factor Edwards. Hamlin, and Busch!
JJ is an all time great. He won. He won consistently and convincingly. He won against great drivers like Stewart, Kenneth, Edwards, Hamlin, Keslowski, Busch, Marin, Wallace, Labonte, etc....and he did it in an era in which the cars were almost equal.
I really enjoyed the conversation beginning at 10:10. Your dad won the 500 after 20 years of trying, then the #3 wins again 20 years later. The numbers line up too much for it to be a coincidence.
@@fivespeed42 Exactly. Those were three miracle races in a row (the 500, Steve Park winning at Rockingham, and Kevin Harvick winning at Atlanta Motor Speedway). Some people say that God controls all things. Remember how Brad won his first race at Talladega (when Carl flipped), and Brad flipped at Atlanta (where Carl won his first race)? A lot of the words in Scripture are racing references, too. (Walls, speed, chariots, race, horsemen, wheels, lightning, etc.) There has gotta be an Upper Hand in all of this. "The sport that prays together, stays together."
People only hated jimmy because he won against their favorite racer. He was the ultimate “hook” of nascar because he never spoke to against enemies, he created them by winning
My favorite JJ Championship is The Great Unforeseen Championship of 2016. No, he didn’t have the best year, but he did win when it counted and made the final four. Though he never won Homestead before, AND he had to start from the back, he still won. Many critics say he didn’t deserve it, because the other three ran up front all day and JJ didn’t. But consider this...JJ had to pass every car on the track that day, while the other three had a pretty easy run up front. EVERY. SINGLE. CAR. He was up front when it counted, and when Edwards and Logano got stupid, JJ was there. On the last two restarts, he easily took the lead and drove away, proving he had the car to beat AND he had the smarts and the talent to bring that car to the front when it counted.
Why I think Jimmie Johnson didn't get the recognition, is maybe for one of the team concept of Hendrick Motorsports, that Jeff Gordon had preceded him with championships and that people felt it may have been a crew chief and organizational advantage. Whereas, Petty and Earnhardt seemed to be the predominant reason for the success.
Hey Jr. I've been a fan of yours since your start in cup, we're about the same age. I was also a big fan of your Dad. Just a couple questions from a fan that dont do social media, who's the new guy in the booth, and what's Mike's story. Never heard or seen that guy until I got turned on to your UA-cam channel. Just curious man, thanks.
I actually think Jimmie is more comparable to Alain Prost than to Senna and/or Schumacher. JJ and Prost were both tactically smart drivers, with a smooth and non-agressive driving style. And neither one of them pushed their cars to the limit until the end of the race. I also think Jimmie`s personality is somewhat similar to that of Prost, they both raced clean and was rarely involved in any controversies on or off the race track. And let`s face it, Jimmie isn`t the most charismatic guy - nor was Prost. Meanwhile both Senna & Schumacher were entertaining drivers to watch with their aggressive driving styles, and both often them caused a lot of controversies. Both Senna and Schumacher had something which Prost lacked, charisma. I think the same can be said about Jimmie, compared to Richard Petty, Dale Sr, Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon or the Busch brothers. However, i don`t think anyone questions JJs skills behind the wheel of a race car.
This is a question for owner Dale Jr. or Kelley. Did no practice save teams any money? Do composite bodies save money over metal? Should NASCAR continue next year with no practice or qualifying in light of uncertain economic conditions? When will cup go to composite bodies? Thank you
Great show as usual guys but, I have to say that for dummies like me that didn't understand the podcast format I was thinking, why does Dale wear the same T shirt all week long . Even now that I figured it out, it still bugs me.
I wish just for ONE season , we could go back to to the way the points chase used to be and see who can be a bad ass all year long instead of just being good when you need to be. You’ll see all of those “tricks” you guys were talking about being shown every week.

I respect your entire family and how far you're going to go .congratulations on the new baby. Please forgive my writing skills.
JJ's the G.O.A.T....plain and simple......he doesn't need a contrived nickname, he's JJ and anyone in the racing world or anyone who follows the racing world will know who JJ is and what he accomplished. No disrespect to Petty or Sr., but come on.....5 in a row! 200 wins is impressive...even if a good # of them did come in an era where they ran multiple races per week, and it will never be done again...at least not solely in the Cup series......but it's not 5 Cups in a row. 7 total Cups is impressive......but it's not 5 in a row!
Jimmie's problem is that he struggles with that DEFINING moment for his career. He has the resume, the championships, the Crown Jewel wins, the stats, but when it comes to splitting a hair to determine the "best ever", you need that intangible something. Win or lose, Jimmie was just sorta boring. He could crush the field, and all you wanted to do was take a nap. There's no Pass in the Grass, or 1976 Daytona 500 finish, on Jimmie's record. These moments can be wins or losses, they just have to be something that JUMPS to mind the second you think of a driver. Jimmie wrecking to try and win at the Roval is maybe one of his defining moments, but I just don't think it's enough. When you think of NASCAR's all-time highlights, how many really come from Jimmie Johnson?
@@matthewvargas2190 Know what, I did forget about that- that's a pretty great finish. That said, I still don't think it's enough considering the length of his career. I think a broadcaster perfectly summed up Jimmie after his (I think) fourth straight championship. As Jimmie was celebrating, the fans were stunned- not even booing. The broadcaster said something like "Jimmie Johnson has beat the fans into submission." I think that sums it up well because there weren't many of those defining moments that made you stand up and say "WOW!", but rather he just clobbered the field relentlessly and without flash.
I think the 24-48 finish at Martinsville, beating and banging to the line, that had to be his defining moment, as well as the official passing of the torch from gordon to johnson
Sidenote 1988 the lakers and dodgers won the same title the same year that bill elliott win the cup series title and this year both the lakers and dodgers won the title so did chase elliott
the problem I have the JJ and his memory is that no matter how many wins or championships he has... he was always as boring as a slice of white bread. Senna was memorable because of how he drove the car like a possessed man while being this calm & relaxed human being outside the car. For Dale, a rebel wheel man in the car and a "every-man" outside. Jimmie was too clean on the track and off. He'll be too easily forgettable.
The thing is if the team was not all about the kid in early days Jimmy could have won more championships and set the record. But they where not counting him as a major player. They where trying to get that punk kid up there and then could not. But Jimmy did it.
One thing that jimmie will always have against him is that he never won a championship or even a single race when chad was permanently removed from his 48 team. Jeff, earnhardt sr, and stewart all won races and championships with multiple crew chiefs 🤔🤷♂️

Yes yes yes
Super human. As a person.
Check out the Freedom Factory and what Cleetus McFarland has done and put that in Lost Speedways....maybe take one of the old racecars for a few laps
You need to have ur niece on show she did good on pit road as race reporter
All of my favorite drivers have retired, or in a certain case, died
What about the holf cart incident
That one photo-finish at Talladega no?
Always remember the Talladega race hustle..
Who is 5time?
Dad let's me drive slow in the driveway.
He’s Superman wym?
Someone remind Mike that it's Knaus... Not Guhnaus.
Atlanta 1992 Phoenix 2020
Senna is STILL a God around here im Brasil.
the problem I have the JJ and his memory is that no matter how many wins or championships he has... he was always as boring as a slice of white bread. Senna was memorable because of how he drove the car like a possessed man while being this calm & relaxed human being outside the car. For Dale, a rebel wheel man in the car and a "every-man" outside. Jimmie was too clean on the track and off. He'll be too easily forgettable.
Easily Forgettable? Ha good joke
He’s one of the classiest guys I’ve seen. Maybe the classiest. That’s not boring to me.
Jimmie J the GOAT
That Creed move was not magic, that was chubby Sheldon skill, man, which is worth two astrologies.
definiately believe there are no coincidences ... God is watching too ... and I believe God grants " luck " .
The thing is if the team was not all about the kid in early days Jimmy could have won more championships and set the record. But they where not counting him as a major player. They where trying to get that punk kid up there and then could not. But Jimmy did it.
There's no way it will register it's just above anything we've seen
Where’s Dillner?????
WHERE DO I GET A CHEVY CITY DIECAST????????????????????????????????????????????
Can't be done now bcuz we need to have playoffs which have no place in Motorsports
Jimmys nickname golden horse shoe
One thing that jimmie will always have against him is that he never won a championship or even a single race when chad was permanently removed from his 48 team. Jeff, earnhardt sr, and stewart all won races and championships with multiple crew chiefs 🤔🤷♂️
