- In this video, we look at the powers of Morgoth, the first Dark Lord, and we'll look at how his powers changed throughout the ages, starting from when he first entered Arda as Melkor to when he defeated at the end of the First Age as Morgoth.

Tulkas's strength has nothing against Melkorwalk.
It's interesting to realize how much Melkor feared Tulkas. Where Tulkas would leap joyously into battle, smile on his face and laughter on his lips, Melkor used others and manipulated, rarely using his power outright. Fear was just such a strong part of who Melkor was, that the joy and strength of Tulkas always drove Melkor to flee and/or hide.

Tulkas had no fear of Morgoth, and that made Morgoth fear him.
At the time of the War of Powers Melkor was basically squandering with power pouring his very essence into Arda itself, it may even extend to the very fabric of the phsyical universe. This is while combating all the Maiar and Valar mostly by himself. So he wasn't even at his 100% when Tulkas finally came. The version of Morgoth who fought Fingolfin was a pathetic shell of his former self. Melkor is evil and all but he is confirmed to be the strongest and most beautiful being in the Tolkienverse just below God Himself. So it would be unwise to downplay him. This all makes his fall from grace a lot more regrettable. Because had this guy worked with the Valar instead of against them then then Arda would have become a paradise as it was originally intended to be. Imagine all of Arda being like that of Valinor. Perhaps even greater.

. I have identified some powers he manifested in the Silmarillion:
1. Storm of Vengeance (?):
"Below them suddenly thunder rolled, lightnings leaped upward, and the mountains quaked. Fire and smoke belched forth from Thangorodrim, and flaming bolts were hurled far abroad, falling ruinous upon the lands"
2) Wish - reality warping: the Ainulindale
3) Shapeshifting - until he lost this ability;
4) Earthquake:
"The cry of Morgoth in that hour was the greatest and most dreadful that was ever heard in the northern world; the mountains shook, and the earth trembled, and rocks were riven asunder."
"Therefore Morgoth came, climbing slowly from his subterranean throne, and the rumour of his feet was like thunder underground."
5) Telepathy - Ósanwe-kenta
6) Control weather: the share of all his brother's powers (Manwë and Ulmo);
7) Dominate monster - dragons, orcs, trolls, etc
8) Storm of fire:
"the host of the Valar was driven back, for the coming of the dragons was with great thunder, and lightning, and a tempest of fire."
9) Stone shape - the rise of Misty Mountains and geological activity at the battle against the Valar for Arda;

12) Mass suggestion - the corruption of the Maiar (Balrogs, Sauron, etc), Elves in Valinor, men.
13) Plague - that killed Lalaith and the children of Edain

Shrieking like a girl- "She (Ungoliant) enmeshed him (Morgoth) in a web of clinging thongs to strangle him. Then shrieking like a girl Morgoth sent forth a terrible cry that echoed in the mountains..."
He eventually had the power to just "will ruin" on people like Turin. In the unfinished tales, he talks to Hurin and brags about how his will alone focused on them will crush his children.

It makes you realise just how futile Morgoth's struggle was. No matter how much power he amassed or how hard he tried, he was only ever furthering Iluvatar's plan.
@@DarthGandalfYT Almost gives you some sympathy for Melkor. Eru made him that way, presumably deliberately. Was he acting of his own free will in attempting to defy Eru or was he deliberately cursed with an incurable frustration so that he could serve as an instrument in Eru's celestial prog rock song? A slave to the creator's will, yet the only one cursed to know it and resent it.
I literally laughed out loud when I read that Morgoth flattened mountains and filled in valleys, all just to be a dick. Hilarious.
I think it is interesting when you truly fathom just how powerful Morgath was. I highly doubt any hobbits could rock climb a mount dooms if Morgath was live at the time.
Morgoth is essentially the ego of Illuvatar. The largest portion of Illuvatar's mind and his biggest competing force of thought amongst all the offspring of his thoughts. Our egos seek to prioritise the individual over the whole, to remake things in their own image through envy and insecurity. Morgoth is the ultimate god of fear because he IS fear, is ruled and made manifest by his own fear - of insignificance, impotence, and the inability to love.

@@yobro6053 Illuvatar is the primal god if you like. Then his offspring are god. Then gandalf and all those people are Half-god/Angel.
Eru Illuvatar is basically Christian, Muslim, Jewish God the alpha and omega the Supreme one above all etc. Then he basically created lesser gods like the Greek, Egyptian pantheon called the Valar. The Valar just like our own mythology have their niches some are better than others at certain things. Morgoth or Melkor would be similar to Zeus/Lucifer as he was basically the strongest, smartest and wisest for a time of all the Valar. He wanted to create something by himself or create something put of nothing, but that power rest solely in the hands of Eru. This coupled with other things caused him a have a falling out and the rest is history. The Maiar are basically helpers/angels Eru created to serve the Valar. Sauron and Gandalf fall into this category.

so Morgoth's powers were like a battery , the more he used them and the bigger powers he used , gradually it made him weaker and weaker until one maiar could defeat him. this reminds me of villains who make a deal with a great evil to attain powers beyond they can imagine or wield so the more of the power they use, their bodies start decaying/age fast or simply break apart since the body cant bear it
Yeah this is similar to Emperor Palpatine, he wanted to obtain a new body as his excessive dark side usage made him decay very quickly.

One of the great themes of Tolkien's writing is the notion that evil is destructive, including self-destructive. It's very rare that 'good' triumphs over evil by force of arms in Tolkien's stories; almost always, evil destroys itself while good endures. This is almost axiomatically true; evil is that which destroys, including itself eventually, while good is that which sustains, preserves, protects, builds up and improves, including itself. There are two fundamental asymmetries at play, the first being that destruction is always easier than creation; which is represented by how only Eru Illuvatar can create/grant true life, while anything can kill or destroy. The second being that although destruction is easier, creation is what endures over the long run. Melkor's attempts to destroy are largely successful--he destroys a great deal. But in the long run, his actions destroyed himself, while goodness just kept on creating and enduring. We also see this in the story of Feonor; he is the greatest and wisest of the Noldor when he creates the Silmarils, but his determination to destroy Morgoth in revenge for their theft is what makes him weak and ultimately destroys him, and dooms the greater part of his followers.
I would say the curse on hurin is proof of morgoth's fall. A being who once could raise a mountain chain to hinder the riding of Orome now is 'reduced' to a long range curse rather than just striking them down.
That “long range curse” was farfarFAR more devious, evil, hurtful, and horrific than any “striking down” could ever do!

I, on the other hand, grow more powerful the more of your videos I watch.
So, Sauron learned the lesson of conservation and even regeneration of energy from the extensively wasteful conduct of Morgoth. With The Ring of Power, Sauron place a certain quantity of his power beyond his own reach to such a degree that The Ring acted as a sort of regulator. When he lost The Ring, because he could still draw power from Mordor's volcanic mountains, he understood that, in time, he would eventually regain his Ring of Power. What he didn't count on was that a form of sentient life had developed that could successfully resist the corrupting power of his Ring, and even carry it to its own destruction.

Nope Frodo and Sam failed to destroy the One Ring. It was God who intervened. They did however put every single effort mortally possible to destroy the One Ring and that's what mattered. When mortal limitation kick then that's when God took over.

Melkor wanted to fashion a world to his own liking. Why didn't Eru just say, "Hey, here's another planet over here; it can be your sandbox"? Boom: Problem solved!
It was all part of Eru's plan. He who attempts to sow discord will only give birth to greater beauty unforeseen (paraphrasing).
Because Morgoth didn't want another planet, he wanted to change all of creation.
It would not have satisfied Morgoth. He did not want to be the only Vala of his own world, he wanted to be Eru, God himself, which was impossible.

Morgoth poured too much of his energy into middle earth and creating things like Dragons. Simliar to how Sauron poured too much energy into his ring.

His original name, likely given to him by Eru, was Melkor, which meant "He who arises in might" which is a pretty awesome name. So yeah, powerful.

Melkor's main and true power was the power of corruption.
He could alter everything, but could not create anything from scratch(like the other Valar could), nor could he erase any creation.
He also was the only one to know fear, which he bred onto the Middle Earth, into the hearts of Elves and Man, and somewhat Dwarves.
Yes, the Media is the most powerful entity on earth as it can control the minds of the masses. And that is basically what both Morgoth and Saurons main power was - the power of corruption and manipulation.

This makes me think of how the idea of the Devil has changed, at one point he was created to destroy all matter of the universe, then destroy all that Earth has, then human life, then just corrupt Man.... This De-Evolution is well represented in early Tolkien writing and has been brought up in many other lore stories from multiple cultures, but bringing it to two different named beings that are so specific and diminished and destroyed almost gives me hope for our future. Man can overcome all this evil that we are faced with and push forward through hard times.

Your funny to me this guy. I didn’t even know who Morgath was three weeks ago. Ty for this it’s fascinating. I will certainly pour over the books with my wife and child when she is old enough but for now the commentary will have to stand alone. I believe it’s strong enough to carry the weight. Ty.
So basically the Ainur all forcefully become avatars upon entering Ea.
Perhaps you can do a video on how Aragorn managed to take back so much of Gondor's lost territory. E.g. Umbar, Sea of Rhun etc. After all Gondor and Rohan's military had suffered heavy casualties and were exhausted by the end of the war of the ring, not exactly in a state that allows massive conquest especially since Aragorn also resettled Eriador and probably had to send massive amounts of soldiers up north to protect the new settlers from Orcs (Misty Mountains), Dunland, bandits or simply wild animals. The only feasible way I could see it happening was that Sauron's former vassals began to fight against each other and exhausted themselves allowing Aragorn to conquer them.
If I remember correctly after sauron’s death, orcs and trolls fled everywhere and they all died not long after by being hunted by all wherever they went. They could not form together but cowered and hid and without their master, they are nothing more than unintelligent beast.

My own fan theory, at some point proven to be wrong, was that Melkor was the Vala of time and progress. That is why those things are seen as bad in Middle-Earth.
But I think I like it even more that Morgorth became the source of not just some evil, but all evil ever. His marring of Arda meant that he did not really lose the war.
I have thought about the Population of Arnor, and I believe that a good estimation would be 2 million inhabitants at the height of their power, which I believe was during the years prior to the War of the Last Alliance and declined massively afterwards. What do you think about this estimation?

We need an animated fall of arnor series after war of the rohorrim, so many new locations like annuminas and lake evendil, Fornost, Amon sul in its prime.
A population of 2 million at the height of the Kingdom of Arnor sounds possible, given the large area and that in latter years it broke up into 3 separate, viable, kingdoms.
Using the percentages from medieval Europe, of that 2 million around 20%, so 400,000 would be male of an age to be called upon for military service, though only 20% of these, so about 80,000 would be a permanent military force. The remaining 320,000 would be levies that could be called upon at need, though would have second rate equipment with little training, and historically could only be called up for a limited amount of time each year, this would mean that, except for in a worst-case situation, only a portion of the levy would be called upon at any given time.
Where these might sound like large numbers, remember that they would be spread out over a large area, and for the most part it would be rare for any really large force (over 20,000) to be assembled together except in a national emergency.
In comparison, the population of England (not including Wales, Scotland or Ireland) during the Medieval period, varied from 1.7 million in 1086, up to 4.7 million in 1290, then dropped to 2 million by 1400, then slowly rose to 5.3 million by 1650.
@@sayagarapan1686 1/3 would be of numenorean stock, as the Dunedain are described as "from the beginning, far fewer than the Lesser Men" and yet they are described as numerous as well, and there is plenty of evidence to support that, so 1/3 seems plausible. And about the women and children, I would put as an Early Medieval model.
How morgoth looks like in his true form how tall is he and how he sounds how his true voice is why we never see him on screen
Yeah, adapting Morgoth is a daunting task. I think Rings of Power did it well by showing him briefly as a giant shadow.
In the Tolkien mythology, he would have no true form. His form would be considered beyond human understanding. The images, and depictions we see of the Valor, and its beings are simply personification that can be understood by humans.
Perhaps Morgoth Lost the Ability to Fully Regenerate once he Dispersed most of his Power
In terms of morgoth's apparent ability to curse people, we see this a couple different times with Sauron as well, the ability to make a claim that somehow ends up coming true. I think this is just part of their nature (Ainur), and their understanding of the great music as a whole. I think they can see into pieces of the future but cannot always see the context. Much how Gandalf believes gollum has a part to play. This is why Sauron decreed he would drive the numenoreans into the sea. And he did, but he did not see that he would drown as well.

I was literally wondering about that, because it was just baffling to me that a being only second to god who shaped the world could be wounded by mortal weapons by a mere elf, or in any way fear mortal armies that walked the valleys he sculpted from the rock. I wonder if it is the fate of all things in Tolkien's universe to just vanish, like the world itself gets dimmer and dimmer until it is just the nothing it once was. A very, pessimistic view I must say, but considering the nature of entropy, maybe not too dissimilar to our own universe in a larger scale.
The world of Tolkien loses indeed it's splendor with the passing of time, and the same do the beings of power and civilizations in it. BUT it all goes toward a final confrontation between good and evil, Melkor returned is defeated, and the world is remade, possibly without the discord that he brought to it. So it's not that pessimistic, in the end, it's more like a story of decay and rebirth

Tulkas “you can always get these hands”
In terms of morgoth's curse, I personally believe that the reason he can do things like this is because he is constantly exerting his will on the world around him, not just metaphorically, but physically too. This includes with words or even simple statements. This is why he can make a promise and it will come true seemingly as though by happenstance, it's how he exerts control on the world around him and it is a literal application of his willpower
I wonder how Morgoth lost his ability to assume a fair form. For Sauron, that took an extreme situation - the destruction of Númenor which ended up costing the life of his mortal form. Sauron's spirit survived and had sufficient power to reconstitute him physically, but at the cost of losing his shape-shifting ability. Sauron was able to reconstitute his body again after his death at the hands of Isildur. So was Morgoth killed as he wooed the newly-awakened men?
Eru straight up banished Morgoth from Arda I think.

I'm talking about much earlier, as the video says at 7:00 "early in the First Age he takes a fair form and goes East and corrupts Men shortly after they have awoken - a huge victory. But he soon loses the ability to take a fair form shortly afterwards and gets stuck in the form of a Dark Lord"

@Giorgio Chiara But it said COULD not, not "no longer wished to" - and given how Morgoth had often, as Sauron later would, assumed that form to deceive others and make his malice more effective, you'd think he'd want to keep that ability at least as an option

I wonder if the writers for the Elder Scrolls got the concept of the Aedra sacrificing their bodies to create Nirn was inspired by Morgoth pouring his essence into Arda.
A lot of people I know have a tendency to think of morgoth as a wuss because he flees from Tulkas. But it makes perfect sense that he did, as Tulkas LOVES fighting. And it is made perfectly clear that he would be more than happy to spend eternity wrestling with morgoth, who had other goals in mind. He specifically asked for Eru's permission to go down and hit stuff😂 its why he came. And I think it's important to understand that overwhelming Force is not what Tolkien means when he says power

Tolkien had a wonderful intuitive sense for some real geological history. Primordial Earth = simple grace punctuated by unimaginable chaos and violence. I highly recommend reading The Silmarillion if you're studying geology. Good mythical backdrop.

Do you think the other Valar have also kind of dissolved their power in Arda and other creations in time?
I imagine that if nothing else they would have much been more careful in doing so and can work with each other to limit significant losses of power.
They have been weakened. Definitely slower, but as mentioned before, Yavanna was incapable of remaking the trees without obtaining some of that energy back. It is mentioned in the story of the Dagor Dagorath that the powers of the world will grow weary with the world, and only the return of the trees could revive their "youth" and strength.

Makes me wonder this: If Sauron was more powerful in the 3A than Morgoth was in the 2A, is it possible that there were some Melkoric Cults in the East that would come into conflict with the Sauronic Cults over what they would see as blasphemous. We all know how envious Sauron was, I would imagine Morgoth was as well.
There's certainly room in the lore for conflict between Morgoth's successors in the early Second Age, but for power than "blasphemy". Sauron still presented himself as loyal to Morgoth until the Downfall of Numenor, so any "Sauronic Cults" would realistically be "Melkoric Cults" at that point.

What if religious worship helps regenerate a Vala's power/strength? belief in a deity tends to have that sort of effect. Melkorism and the events of the New Shadow would explain Morgoth slowly regaining his strength in the void

Let it be known that I too, like Mogoth, expended my power by subscribing to this channel. Since then, I have been witness to a volley of video upload notifications, of which I have further expended my power upon with each subsequent "like" and now? Now I'm forever greatly diminished for it. Was it of any worth? Unfathomably so~!
Morgoth expended his power similar to how Thanos did by using the Infinity Stones and then went into "retirement", old, weak and vulnerable.

I feel like the next hmgame I make should use that slowly reducing power level as a mechanic. I mean it would be like playing some AIs trying to build a world to a seeds specs and you running amuck. Then as you collective power levels demise you play on a finer detail level of the world.

Do you think Feanor and Finglofin would have taken Morgoth out? I think they would came very close. And in some kind of hypothetical scenario with Finarfin involved, the three brothers would have killed him i think.
I can't say for certain, but I would say no. Fingolfin managed to wound Morgoth many times, but I don't think any of them were overly serious. I think if Morgoth felt his life was truly in danger, he would either retreat or simply not answer the challenge in the first place.
No, the truth is the Noldor never had a chance from the start, and the other Valar knew this. If they all together could not beat Melkor, what could Elves do?(and even if they had, what would be left, probably far less then when they did go at the battle of all battle)
But the war from the Noldor onto Melkor is probably what made Melkor weak enough to ultimately be defeated, at the cost of Belerian and many lands around it.
@@DarthGandalfYT i think he would have to accept the challenge, becuase he would lose authority in front of his servants. Feanor could have crafted some very powerfull weapons and armor to help them in this battle. Even if they didnt win, i think they would put Morgoth to wheelchair 😂, maybe after this, Valar would have pity him 😂😂.
@@wojta610cz5 All the Noldor combined were unable to defeat Morgoth. Even Fëanor realized this as he lay dying.
I think Feanor and Fingolfin could possibly defeat Morgoth in combat (in his final stage, very "weakened") together, or at least get to a stale mate like Elendil and Gil-Galad had against Sauron.
But of course, Morgoth would never allow himself to be destroyed by the Noldor, he would beat them in any other unfair possible way.

Morgoth could put his power into other things and beings, it weakened him as he strengthened others and it seems that this was a power exclusive to him. Sauron could merely corrupt something, he couldn't imbue it with permanent power. The other Valar seem to lack this power.

He even allowed Sauron to recover from physical non-existence after Numeno's destruction (if we accept that Eru is omnipotent).

There is no contradiction. They are powerful at different things.

Ask me Eru Iluvatar gave Melkor too much power and authority. Even in the Bible Satan Gadre'el was never even called an Archangel but a Cherubim of the Garden of Eden in the book of Ezekiel and he didn't rule over fallen angels like the Watchers in the book of First Enoch but simply helped them and was punished with severe restrictions and couldn't hurt mankind directly.
Yahuah Elohim doesn't allow evil to have the strongest power and even Satan is afraid of the Seven Archangels like Michael for his power is below their's. A fallen Cherubim who is retrained will always be below the Holy Seven Yahuah and Yahusha created. Seven Archangels who will never fall too even when the War in Heaven in the Tribulation happens.

Justice wasn't made to melkors weakness and they ended him as if Tolkien wanted to get rid of the character, the valar grew more powerful while melkor grew weaker and weaker and no true explaination was made for his weakness. The vala shaped the world and never grew weak, varda created the stars and yet she retain all her powers, aule created the dwarves, yavana the ents, yet melkor only corrupt the earth and life yet lost all of his might and power. Pls how come

The explanation is given in the book "Morgoth's ring". Melkor was pouring his essence into the substance of the world to corrupt it and growing progressively weaker as he did it. The Valar going to war with him became progressively more difficult in that any war on him was a war against the substance of the world itself. That is why the battles against him at the end of the first age were so physically destructive to the land.
However, the other Valar were also weakened, just less so since they were more careful and intricate with their power compared to Morgoth's wild rampage. After all, Yavanna was diminished so that she could not make the two trees again, and it is stated that at the end of the world, the Valar become weary, which is the opportunity that Morgoth uses to get back into Arda and wage the Dagor Dagorath.

"The Valar 'fade' and become more impotent, precisely in proportion as the shape and constitution of things becomes more defined and settled. The Past, once 'achieved', has become part of the 'Music in being'. Only Eru may or can alter the 'Music'. The last major effort, of this demiurgic kind, made by the Valar was the lifting up of the range of the Pelóri to a great height."
They do diminish, but in a different way than Morgoth.
