Where’d you get the work from? The most obvious one is the www.ACX.com platform. It’s where producers look for narrators who can record and edit material ….you simply put here the type of work that you are interested in looking for the sort of accents that you can offer and whether you want to be paid money per finished hour as a full 100% buy out, or if you are prepared to go into an agreement, so that you would only get paid royalties every month. A very important word about the royalty situation, and that is you need to check out the credentials of the author..
Quite often there will be a link on ACX to the actual book, the physical and Kindle books on Amazon, so follow the link and see what kind of reviews the author has had, and if there has been lots of sales and wonderful five-star reviews, you’re pretty sure that the audiobook version that you are putting yourself forward to record, will sell well and you will get decent royalties returns. If not, it could be a labour of love you are embarking on! As well as ACX.com where the lion’s share of legitimate opportunities are, there are other large audiobook organisations who take on narrators, such as Bee Audio. Join the hive…: www.beeaudio.com/narrator-sub... There is also Brilliance Publishing auditions@brilliancepublishing.com You’ll also find audiobook jobs on Fiverr.com, Upwork.com, PeopleperHour.com, and Covoco.com. But once you get established like me, you’ll soon get discovered by authors direct to record their audiobooks.
So before you start the main job, you need to record at least 15 minutes worth for the author, to make sure they are absolutely happy with your reading style. For fiction books, is also best to get a few lines from each of the main characters, to ensure that the author is happy with the voice you are giving them. Once the demo has been accepted, then you need to divide up the invoice if you are getting paid, into, I suggest four sections. So for example if you are getting $200 per hour, and it’s a 10 hour audiobook, the total job is two thousand dollars. You don’t want to get to the end of weeks of work and then not get paid a penny for it do you? So you need to work on staged payments. After the demo is accepted, you send in invoice one of four. That should be for $500. Then you start work. About a third of the way through you send invoice number two, two thirds way through you send invoice number three, and then the final invoice you send after the job is completed.
Any questions? No? Okay, have fun recording your audiobooks, and if you’d like to know anything else about the world of voice-overs and earning money as a voice-over artist in your own home studio, please visit www.voiceovermasterclass.com

I have 4 jobs. I barely sleep. I also do audiobooks and it's definitely a labor of love. Keyword: love, not labor. Introverts who love to read, write, & go deep truly enjoy audiobooks.
Love your voice by the way. It's like honey. ❤

Spot on with punch and roll Peter. No matter what, you have to listen to the entire file again.

Very interesting video - before I got into working as a Voiceover artist, I spent over 10 years as a recording engineer in a VO studio, and I would say that "punch and Roll" works perfectly, PROVIDING, someone else is doing the punching and rolling - as a VO doing your own recording on a PC, forget it, you'll cut into a breath, make the pause too long (or too short) it wont be consistently natural.

Great video. I agree that audiobooks, especially the ones available to narrators through ACX, are a ‘labor of love.’ Love the advice. Cheers!

Can you Narrate with USB microphone for ACX, and how difficult is it to get the audio settings in compliance with their requirements? Is it difficult to learn , I’m hearing that the audio is why people struggle with .
