It's planned obsolescence. Same with tech like washers, phones etc. If you build a product that's too good, it's gonna take a lot of time before that customer needs to replace that product. That's what the light bulb industry pioneered. That way you can extract more money from the same customers.

Ok this is definitely only a subset of us!! I am a woman and I have a hard time imagining me purchasing 12 sets of clothes in a year, much less almost 6x that! However, I also was pregnant for the first time in 2023 so I bought 6 shirts (3 short- & 3 long-sleeved) and 2 maternity pants. I believe I bought a new pack of socks too. Literally that was my new 2023 wardrobe 🤷🏻♀️. And I hated the idea that I wouldn’t be able to get much use out of those clothes in 2024…

on the other hand glues/weldingmethods on sport shoes became hard af. I bought a pair of sport sneakers for around 12$ of a noname brand and in a discount store. I used them for daily hikes, rode bike with them, traveled, took them to the gym for almost a year straight (only stopped wearing them ebcause they are all white and got deep stains which i can't wash out and actually am lazzy to do so)... the result - sole got worn places (partially) but 0 holes and the welded/glued parts are as good as new. Bought myself a new but black pair and the others will serve me as my backup/dog walking shoes. 12 gatdamn $ only!

Once the company builds reputation and starts making profits, product quality goes down while prices stay the same or increase

Supply and demand. Look at furniture where it probably started. Would you buy a dresser thats 200lbs because its made from wood that is going to outlive your grandchildren, or buy a cheaper one that is like not even 30lbs and could break in your life time?
Now those things are the same price for worse quality because theyre no longer using red hardwood to make it, but stuff thats a lot less denser. You could argue that Ikea started it since they used cheaper materials for easier access. Now this has spread to all facets of our lives.
I still have shirts from like 15 years ago but have to rebuy more modern stuff every few years.

More and more "luxury brands " that I clean ( like Gucci, Marciano, Ralph Lauren, ) have polyester and viscose in it. Nothing wrong about polyester in itself , but they tell client it's 100% silk when in reality it's 70%silk and 30% viscose ( who wants to pay 250 $ for 30% plastic ?)
Always check the clothes before buying !
Also fake leather is plastic and it's not washable.
Even the new collections of linen are mostly 70% linen and 30 % polyester.
They are selling us 2$ plastic for 100$ basically .

Its done on purpose. Engineers making their products last only a short amount of time so you have to buy more and more. And its expensive. Thats been happening in all industries in our country.

I'm a leathercrafter, and belts are something that's made the most for me. The middle price for a belt i make is at around 50 - 60 usd. This includes a veg tanned leather ( non chemically tanned and toxic free ) heavy duty buckles and rivets, hande made individually with customer picked length, edge cut leather and both fat and oil polished before sale.
The " belts " you buy in most shops are garbage materials and machine made, made to be mass produced with " genuine leather " branding ( aka the cheapest crap even called leather ) and it's 90 %+ all toxic and chrome filled materials.
I can sell you 1 belt and it will last easy until your grandchildren enherits it. Companies want you to buy a new one within 3 months.
Do you make nickel-free belts? It’s gotten to the point I can’t wear a belt without getting a rash unless it’s nickel-free.
@@Mubvekhar Nickle free buckles are a bit more expensive, but manageble so no problems making them. If you get rashes, do make sure to check if you react to the leather as well. Chrome allergy is not something one wants ( chrome as in the tanning process for the leather )

I've started to purchase Hemp clothing. It's literally the only thing that's solved the problem of t-shirts and collared shirts not fitting me properly. Hemp clothing tends to breath much better, are much more durable, and don't shrink as much when you wash and dry them. It's more expensive, but far less likely to fall apart.

Hemp/linen and wool, with only things cotton being that stuff that I'm gonna beat to shit like gym shorts/shirts. I do prefer blends of hemp/linen with cotton to reduce wrinkles and wool blends with some nylon for durability. But basically that's how I shop nowadays is quality fabric and construction only. Not only are these generally more durable but also better performing.
My wardrobe has never been leaner, but also has never been so good.
As a 6 foot fat loser I have never found good clothes. Now that I've been eating better and started working out I feel like I fit better in my clothes. I've never understood the body positivity delusion cause I sure as hell ain't happy with how I look and weigh. I've been working on myself for 2 months now and when I see big number go down I feel like an RPG character and my stats are getting better. Being an rpg addict I like weighing myself and tracking my progress.

Keep it up. Once you get high enough stats you can add advanced skills to your character. Great for the survival mechanics but requires high focus stats to do safely. Push hard, rest harder.
Don't stop. I got into great shape too. My max lifts (4yrs ago, detrained now) were 235 bench, 415 deadlift, 335 squat. Just make sure to weigh once a week and track nutrition. Most of the work is diet as well. You can't put in work in the gym and have a bad diet, or you may not gain/maintain muscle while losing weight.
My Levi's 501 and 505 jeans from the late-90s, which I can still wear, are higher quality than new Levi's.

I watched a video of a Japanese guy I believe he was who had bought an original pair of Levi jeans from the 1870's and they obviously hadn't been abused much but they had been worn by many people and they were still in fantastic condition and looked amazing.
try getting the same quality denim that we had in our pre covid jeans. It's just thin crap now.
The material is thin and feel slick, cheap denim.
That's because the crap from the 90s are all disintegrated now and only high quality is left.. They make 501s in multiple tiers now, ranging from the budget sub $30 to special selvedge pairs in the hundreds of dollars, the 501s in the $150+ range will easily match the quality of the surviving vintage 501s. Just don't buy the knockdown crap they sell at Costco and Target and you'll find they will last forever.

I have to replace my jeans every few months now. The seams just come apart on them in no time, or the material around the studs and belt loops starts to fray until it turns into a gaping hole... I can't remember the last pair of jeans I had that lasted more than a year.
Sizes seem to be all over the place too... I'll buy two pairs from the same store, both allegedly the same size and regular fit. One pair I can't even fasten, and the other pair I can't wear without a belt.
@bluesrocker91 I don't know. I haven't tried myself, I also don't know what you do for work but try buying one expensive pair of pants and see if they last longer. I always believed in "you get what you paid for" so don't cheap out. If it's double the price and only last double the time then no but if it last 3-4 times longer then I'd keep doing it. Rn I just go and buy the Levi's at Walmart for $40. The ones at Marks Wearhouse are like $80-100 (Canadian) I could never justify paying that much just for work pants. I work in a body shop so once I get paint on them they are work only and can't just wash them then go out to dinner. If I did buy the $80-100 ones at marks I wouldn't wear them to work, they would last way longer because I'm not using them all the time so I wouldn't know how much better they actually are since they aren't getting wrecked. If they are double the price and last double the amount of time that just saves you gas money for running to the store to buy more pants.

I buy AUD$60 Chinos from Uniqlo, that lasts me multiple years, whereas when I used to buy from Kmart for $30, they would last a couple months at best, and always caused me chaffing/physical pain from how cheap they were. Same thing applies for when I used to buy my shoes from Kmart, quality shoes last me significantly longer, as well as a good quality backpack (I would go through a bag a fortnight in Highschool)

Why you should buy your own denim and have a tailor make you a pair. It will cost you 300$ less if you sew, but they will last you a lifetime which saves you a ton of money in the end. And they fit perfectly which you can't find in stores

Quality fell through the floor when corporations realized that consumers cared more about cost than quality. And then they kept quality low while increasing price in tandem with their competitors. But this is hardly a new trend. You can read journals from the late 1800s where people were complaining about the garbage quality of mass produced goods. Upton Sinclair would mention it, George Orwell would mention it in a book he wrote in the 1930s. He said that people had clothes that were as flimsy as tissue paper and spent their meagre income on tea and chocolate.
Just like we know for a fact people don't give a shit that their clothes are made in a sweat shop. They'd rather pay 10 cents less for an identical item from a sweatshop.

i've purchased a few parts for my collection of clunkers and when you compare them to original stuff it's staggering how bad they are. you take a good look at them and think "if the original didn't last and it's soo much better built what chance this item has of making it long term"
The only way that changes, like this, is for businesses to put their foot down and have quality assessments and audits and to demand maintaining quality because it matters. If they accept crap, they will get more of it.

It IS particularly severe with shoes. Even if you compare the same product lines of the same brands with their old products. I had two pair of Adidas sneaker I bought some time between 2008/10 - those made it till around 2018 being worn quite regularly until I had to throw them away because they simply couldn't be cleaned properly any longer. But otherwise they were watertight and the soles and inlets were in surprisingly good shape.
Buying the same/similar sneakers later to replace them - around 2019 - they made it TWO years until the soles stopped being watertight. Any other shoes these days - brand or not - are pretty much similar. And you can even see reduced quality of seams and glued areas when you look closely.
Soles are 80% air - large gaps with only thin layers of inlets (often cardboard) - overall worse usability and comfort when worn.
Usually that is what you had to expect from shoes below the like 30,- threshold - unless you were extremely lucky - these days you can't even buy >80,- brand sneakers and expect them to do any better than the 30,- crap.

In Mexico, we have a saying "Lo barato sale caro" more or less "Cheap stuff is more expensive". And the meaning is exactly what you said. Buy a cheap pair of boots, and they'll last you a year before you need to replace them. Buy a good pair of boots and they'll last you a decade.
This has conversely contributed to people buying more than they need and in turn, still spending more money. In the end it’s up to you to live within your means and find where you can save if needed.

That is so true, when I was poor I bought £15 kettles, they would break every 6 months. As soon as I had money, I spent £35 on a kettle, it has lasted for about 5 years so far.
So many other things too, like buying in bulk etc save me cash. I hated being poor, but I amazing with money now from the experience.

I buy almost exclusively second hand. It’s sad that when I go to a higher end store, the quality of the material is worse than at a Value Village.
Here is a ultra thin top filled with fashionable holes that will disintegrate within one wash, but the tag will remain indestructible.
Heck yeah, I buy my pants from Goodwill most of the time. Especially work pants that are going to retire earlier than normal due to wear and tear. I can get 3 pair of work pants from Goodwill for the price of one pair of new cheap jeans at a normal retail store and they usually last longer because I can get better quality stuff at Goodwill by picking and choosing. I'll also note that I have about 8 Goodwill stores within 5 miles in any direction from my house so that makes it easier to find good stuff.

Yep, there is a local peddler mall and a local religious thrift store that hit up pretty regularly. Ebay and poshmark round out the rest of my clothes shopping. Haven't been to a mall or "trendy" store in years
so I am 17 right now and my dad still has some t-shirts and jeans that are in good condition which he bought before my birth and my mom has scarfs from before her marriage

Off-brand clothes can still be really great quality. People who still buy expensive branded clothes deserve no sympathy.
Expensive branded clothes is in almost every single case of higher quality than cheap clothes. Quality =/= longevity. You can make a garment out of a really rough, extremely durable fabric that will last you forever but it won't look good and it won't feel good.
@@usernaames Incorrect. The mere fact that something is visibly branded, means you are paying premium for the brand value. There are a lot of great high quality brands, but they are intentionally not visibly branded. For example, Ralph Lauren is a mid-tier brand, for which you pay near high-tier prices. You can get much better quality clothes from actual luxury brands for the same prices. They just aren't visibly branded.
bro honestly that's just not true sometimes. For me generic clothing has been more often than not very poor quality these past years whereas the more premium brands were decent. Sometimes the generic brands are good quality but that's actually rare in my experience. Just bought boxers the other day and wasn't gonna spend 30$ per pair for Calvin Klein cause I thought 10$ per pair for fruit of the loom was gonna be the same quality but that couldnt be further from the truth. My old Calvin Klein still feel amazing but my new fruit of the loom feel like old fucking straw carpet its pure shite. I also bought plain shirts from H&M a year ago and they while they were really inexpensive and good quality, all of the shirts fit different. They were 3-packs of different colors and no 2 shirts fit the same, most of them not even wearable. I can wear like 5 out of the 12 I bought, fucking ridiculous.

This is all true. I have a turtleneck sweater from the ‘90’s that I can still wear and it is pristine. I have bought items in the past 2-3 years that constantly need mending, button repairs, and just get holes from normal washing. Personally, I’d prefer to buy one piece of clothing for $50 that lasts for decades vs five $10 pieces of clothing that lasts a year or two.

As a vintage reseller for a few years now and collector for much longer, I can assure you clothes are made with far less quality now than they used to be. Wash a shirt made in 2004, 1994, 1984, etc wash them 25 times, then wash one made since they started printed tags 25 times. See which ones the graphics are still left on. They're won't even be a graphic on your shirt if it was made in teh last 5 years lol. The last 15 barely anything left... Prior to printed tags, you can wash them hunrdreds if not thousands of times before that happens...

My grandma's clothes would last for decades meanwhile mine won't even last for a year. It's the same with everything though. Fridges, cars, phones, houses, food, healthcare, handbags, clothes, milk, fruits, vegetables, customer service, medicines, vet care, childcare ... etc. Everything has dropped in quality massively when China broke into the world trading market dominating and ruining most industries especially clothing.
It's true. Some Brands have completely swapped their product lineup. Nowadays if I want to buy just a good quality t-shirt made out of cotton, I have to buy it online at some specialized shop. The brands that sold it in the past in classic stores only have those paper thin ones that will shrink and wrinkle after the first wash.
I had a pair of pajamas that I got like 12 or so years ago. They started getting holes in them recently, so I got new ones off Amazon. The new pajamas are already ripping apart at the seams just after a few months. Similar issue with pants where they just fall apart at the stitching in just a few months.
Can confirm. I had a couple pairs of Levi jeans from early 2000s that just recently finally fell apart. Meanwhile I bought a 45$ pair of Levi's recently that lasted maybe 6 months before completely tearing down the inseam. I only weigh like 10 more pounds than I did 20 years ago.

I'm a dude so ofcourse I still have a lot of clothes in my closet from my highschool time in the late 90s early 00s and I never got fat so most still fit: The jeans are still fine and so are the tshirts and the fabric feels tougher. New stuff, jeans and shirst, get holes way quicker.

Depends. Now, I wouldn’t say “legendary”, obviously, but anyone that remembers buying denim in the early 2000s can at least acknowledge the quality was up there compared to other “mall brands” from the era that were wildly popular, which I think is the point.
Going to high school in the early 2000s, their denim absolutely was on par with decent quality alongside American Eagle, GUESS, GAP, Lucky Brand, etc. that were sought after around that time. Levi’s can also be put into the mix of good quality despite their prices leaning more towards an affordable range. The other brands were a bit more pricey, but the quality for the early 2000s was there.
Then there were the other mall brands that were just as popular that may have had a high price tag thrown on them, but the quality was iffy: brands like Hollister (people often confuse them with Abercrombie, their sister brand) was the one I remember being made a bit cheaper and would fray real bad at the heels if one had flared jeans that hit the ground, but their price tags were ridiculously high. Same with The Limited/Limited Too, Tilt and Bullhead jeans from stores like PacSun and Buckle (despite Buckle having their own in-house brand, the other brands they carried weren’t up to par), jeans from Old Navy or Aeropostale, etc. They were often thinner and made of cheaper material, but the fit was okay (outside of Hollister, they were known for the tall skinny girl paradise as they actually carried 0L-3L jeans that had a long inseam compared to others).
They were given the illusion of being high quality because of their price or being sold in an certain store, but truthfully, you could go buy a pair of Fashion Bug jeans, Walmart’s No Boundaries, or JC Penney’s Arizona jeans sold during that time and get the same exact quality at a much cheaper price (but the fit may be off as sizes like 0-5 were still too big, which is obviously the selling point here for those “higher” cheaper quality brands).
I still have 2 pairs of Abercrombie denim flared jeans that have no frays, no holes, and stitching is still done really well that I hung onto as they still fit and feel really good. I bought them in 2006 during my senior year and vividly remember getting them because I had never been able to afford getting their jeans prior until I could buy 2 pairs for my senior photos. Outside of a pair of AE and Lucky Brand jeans I have from my time in high school (to add: and a pair of JNCO 24” circumference flares from 8th grade I never wanted to get rid of due to the patchwork designs), the Abercrombie ones are still going strong. Every so often, I’ll still wear the A&F ones because the quality really has held up with a really good fit.
So, it’s not so much they were known for the highest of quality denim in the world. That’s obvious. I think they’re leaning more towards “legendary” in the sense of brand name recognition and their comparison of quality to other popular _mall_ brand names at the time.

Fashion is mainly for girls and to a lesser extent guys who actually care what they look like, for the rest of us as long as it's comfortable and doesn't look too ratty anything will do.

There’s a tiny bit of knowledge about watches, mostly “They look nice, and might be useful.” Cologne used to be bigger, but the people who bought it used too much of it and now it just comes off as trying too hard. There’s no need to know more than that because a watch tends to be out of your average person’s price range for a personal item, and your phone is right there.
I have jeans from 20 years ago that are perfectly fine (if a bit discolored) and jeans from last year were the knee joint is already ripping up
this april i had to change a few pairs of jeans (that i wore soo many times) but i got a little fatter these last 2 years (like from 59kg to 67kg, like not bad, but im 25 skinny as fuck, but my weight aways was my no go reason to start the gym to bulk up) and most of my "go to" jeans started ripping on the butt 🫠.
YUP had a pair last until recently from early 2000s and bought a new pair and they tore down the inseam after 6 months.

My older brother who was born in the 80s still has some of his clothes from the 90s that look new. My clothes last around 3 years until they have to be thrown out. They damage easily, they shrink easily, and the colour always fades due to cheaper dyes. I am a large, but sizes are just so inconsistent nowadays. I go to different shops, and a small fits me perfectly despite being a large. Also, who the fck is buying 68 pairs of clothes per year??
So I'm not the only one who still has clothe from the 90s in good shape. And refuse to part with it. Ask him his thoughts on pockets. My old jeans can fit phones and any other crap we wanna carry. New jeans won't even fit a single phone properly and some don't even fit my wallet. Whenever I get rid of clothes, its the new that goes.

Spaniard here. Zara is a pest here at Spain, obviously. Them and H&M have set a trend of “fast fashion” with shitty quality clothing. If you make your numbers you end up spending more on low quality clothing than if you buy good quality clothing.
There are still small producers here, still popular, making good and durable ones. The difference is incredible. Jeans that last a decade instead of a year. Shirts and tshirts that don’t wear out in years…they are 4x the price of Zara crap but they last 8X the time.
90% of this trend is supported by women. The vast majority of men don’t give a crap on wearing the same clothes for 5-10 years if it fits us and is in good condition.

i'm learning how to sew because as a thin petite woman nothing fits because it's all designed to accommodate a fupa. i still shop in juniors because petite clothes are too formal and i've seen my size go from a m/l depending on brand to xs-l depending on brand, and some times an xs at walmart is still too big lol
I can sympathize. I don't fit anything that can't stretch. I need a shirt with a the body of a medium, the shoulder width of a large, and the sleeves of an extra large. Jeans are even worse. It's not very fun shopping if you don't fit in the narrow range of what's considered normal.
Oh man you are 100% correct, I bought some t-shirts in small and they were HUGE, in fact almost all clothes are this way. I got so tired of it that I learned how to tailor clothes and bought a sewing machine, now everything I wear is fitted exactly to my body it's amazing.

I noticed this because when I had glasses, they were so easy to clean until they weren’t. Also, when you wiped the phone screen with your clothes back then, it didn’t press stuff and it worked wonders. Now it presses everything on the screen and barely cleans it.

@@Ilasperr True, in many cases it has become like that. However, these cheap are always at an advantage because they don’t spend anything on design. 90% of them are copies so how can you compete with that? Expensive established brands cannot copy cheap brands.
The problem is that people got more used to buying many random cheap items, get the dopamine of shopping, and don’t think if it’s really worth it or not. They’re just exploiting the loopholes and psychology tricks Amazon and others used before and our consumer trained minds.
