    Hi guys, just wanted to let you know I took my CNA test after watching these videos and I passed. These videos are lovely as a teaching guide and a review before taking the exam. However, the other person I took my test with told me she failed because she didn't wash her hands after taking off her gloves. I don't know how other states test, but during the CNA exam in Florida, always make sure you wash your hands as soon as you take off your gloves, no matter what skill you are performing.
    Good luck to everyone and thank you so much Patti for posting these videos!

      When exactly? She takes off her gloves twice during this skill. If you are talking about at the end of the video, she just simulated washing her hands so its assumed she did after the skill was completed. Does she have to wash them also at 2:43 before lowering the bed also? Please let me know. I'm taking it in Florida in a few days

    I prefer the way you teach this skill. In WA we were taught differently and do not place a chucks prior to placing the bedpan and we cover the bedpan with a hand towel after removing it before emptying and rinsing it. This way is cleaner and more effecient as the chucks provides the cover for the bedpan! I appreciate the additional learning from your videos. Love that I can pause or rewatch and review them. With sincere thanks.

      It doesn't make sense not to use a chucks when assisting with a bedpan because you will have sloshing when moving the head of the bed up and down. I think there was probably more to the story than you were told. You will receive a print out after you perform your skills test that details what critical steps you missed - this will provide information you can use to improve your performance in the future. Best of luck!

    Honestly, it varies between states. In NC there are 4-5 glove changes. You gather the supplies while wearing gloves and when you come back to the room you change gloves. You need a towel or something to lay the bedpan on while you change gloves. They will also fail you if you place the bedpan on the table. This is one of the skills that i struggle with the most because of so many glove changes. The skill itself is not so bad, it is just remembering when to do what.

    • @4yourcna
      @4yourcna  6 років тому +3

      The bedpan is not placed on the overbed table, that is correct, because it is an eating surface. However, you do not need to lay the bedpan anywhere. Leave it in the bedside cabinet until you are ready to place it under the patient, after placing the chucks under the patient. 4-5 glove changes is a bit excessive, and the evaluator may limit your glove use as this is not a nursing principle and an unnecessary expense for the testing center. Two sets of gloves is adequate, one set while placing the bedpan and one set while removing it. Hope this helps!

    • @tonyahollowell7609
      @tonyahollowell7609 6 років тому +2

      She did not change or discard her soiled gloves which had been holding the soiled bedpan before turning on the water on the sink. There is no way this is acceptable for any testing.

    • @4yourcna
      @4yourcna  6 років тому +19

      You do not have to physically go to the sink and wash your hands the second you take them off. You are permitted to do your closing first. The privacy curtain, the call light, etc. are not clean (patients, staff, visitors all touch them), so you MUST wash your hands before you leave the patient environment. This is a specific requirement. You can remove your gloves, wash your hands and do the closing, but then you would need to wash your hands again before leaving the room to meet testing standards. It's not necessary and not a graded checkpoint. Hope this helps!

      Gloving and de-gloving are always two steps: hand washing (or hand sanitizing) immediately before applying (even if you washed when you entered room) and immediately after removing gloves, before touching anything else. **Even if not required by the state, it absolutely best practice.**

    Do you have to wash your hands after you take your gloves off? Some teachers are saying to wash hands three total times when changing a bedpan

    • @4yourcna
      @4yourcna  7 років тому +10

      For the exam, you only have one patient and you are not leaving the room. You are not required to wash your hands while waiting for the "patient" to finish toileting for the exam, since you are still in the room. However, in a clinical setting, you would not be standing there waiting. Because you would be leaving the room, you would need to wash your hands before exiting and then wash them again when you return to the room before putting gloves on (since you are ALWAYS required to wash your hands before and after patient contact). So, for the exam, not required but in a clinical setting required. Hope this helps!

    Hi Patty, is it mandatory to have a paper towel in the hand that you use to open the drawer. I know that you must have it in the hand that is holding the bedpan for return to the storage unit.

    • @4yourcna
      @4yourcna  7 років тому

      Since you have not washed your hands, they are not considered clean. You don't want to touch the outside of the drawer with a dirty hand (or, in this case, glove) because that drawer will be touched by clean hands later for other skills. The drawer front should never be touched with dirty hands/gloves - this is an infection control principle. It helps keep the patient's environment clean! Hope this helps!

      Care plans would indicate the proper performance of each skill for every specific patient. So, if you had a patient unable to lift their hips, their care plan would instruct you to roll that patient to the side to place the bedpan and remove it. Always follow the Care Plan for each patient! Best of luck!

The bed does not have to be raised for any Prometric skill. Watch this video for more information regarding bed position: ua-cam.com/video/ljQb9PnSQIg/v-deo.html Thank you for your comment!

    This is the only skill I had problems with on the state test. The evaluators told me that my patient couldn't adjust the bed pan himself while I was adjusting the bed.after I left him to use it and wipe they checked to see if the pan was in the correct posistion. I wasn't sure what to do

    • @4yourcna
      @4yourcna  8 років тому +5

      Yes, the evaluators will check to see if the bedpan is in the proper position, under the patient's buttocks. The patient can make small adjustments as the head of the bed is raised, but proper positioning must be done by the CNA, with the widest part of the bedpan (the part that looks like a toilet seat) under the patient's buttocks. Thank you for your comment!

    Hi, I live in Wisconsin and will be taking my test soon. I was taught to raise the bed for proper body mechanics and to raise the bed rail if I'm not on that side. I noticed you don't do that in this video or your other instructional videos. Is there a reason why? and if I do raise the bed/rails at my Exam can I touch the up/down arrow button and the rails with my gloves? Your advice will be greatly appreciated!

    • @4yourcna
      @4yourcna  6 років тому

      That's a lot of questions at once! I'll try to answer them all... 1) you are not REQUIRED to raise the bed, but you can if you want (see the video on raising the bed here: ua-cam.com/video/ljQb9PnSQIg/v-deo.html ) 2) You are not graded on siderail use during the exam because you need a doctor's order to use siderails (they are a restraint). 3) You should not touch anything but the patient with your gloves - would you want dirty gloves in your mouth for mouth care or around your private areas for bedpan? Keep your gloves clean for the patient. You can learn more about gloves here: ua-cam.com/video/AQa9RYK1BI4/v-deo.html. You might find our online CNA Test Prep program helpful. It is located on courses.4YourCNA.com. This is a totally FREE course and it covers all of these principles and MORE. It was created especially for students that are getting ready to test. You may also wash your hands immediately after removing gloves, but as long as you wash before leaving the room, it is acceptable for the exam. Hope this helps!

    • @4yourcna
      @4yourcna  7 років тому +1

      The care plan states that the patient can wipe themselves, so peri care is not required for the CNA to perform on this patient. Of course, every patient is different and will require a different level of care,. based on their specific abilities. Always follow the care plan, because they are individualized for each patient. But for the exam, the "patient" will not need peri care. Thank you for your question and best of luck!

    • @4yourcna
      @4yourcna  6 років тому

      No, for the exam, there is no disinfectant available. You can wash it out with soap and water if you wish, but this isn't a graded checkpoint on the exam. For the exam, they are simulating liquid waste, not solid, so rinsing with water is considered appropriate. This bedpan is only used by that one patient, so disinfection is not required. Hope this helps! Best of luck on your exam! :-)

      Side rails are not graded during the exam. In most cases, the testing center does not even have side rails on the beds. You are responsible for knowing how to perform care safely without the use of side rails (because they are considered a restraint and not present in most settings). Side rails may not be used without a doctor's order. Thank you for your question!

    • @4yourcna
      @4yourcna  7 років тому +7

      If you are in a Prometric testing state, siderails are NOT part of the opening and closing procedures. In fact, you will be told that siderail usage is not graded at all during the exam and you must perform the skill safely without regard for siderails. Other states may grade on siderails, but Prometric states do not. These videos are produced for Prometric grading standards. Best of luck!
