Our testable skills are very basic, but if you work win a clinic or hospital, you will need additional training for specific skills like catheter care or emptying a urinary bag.

    I enjoy these skills video's & recorded demonstrations very much!! Thank You for trying to help people to learn by visually showing what's involved & we're to be doing. I'm going to be pursuing LPN finally, and although i have some higher random level skills & knowledge\training, I lack in some of this basic, yet vital & critical patient care. One thing that has struck me though as I've watched, the mannequin probably weighs little in comparison to real human beings and are far more awkward and some can be downright difficult or uncooperative, combative.....These are absolute best case scenario with a stellar patient which doesn't happen very often. Even if they are an ideal patient who will work "with" you, it's a struggle to transfer them or turn them, so what then? That's why I wasn't sure how realistic these video's are as this is a best case situation that im questioning would prepare brand new workers for what they'd better be capable of. Another video, an additional man stepped in to hold the mannequin up on her side while a back rub was performed. Well isn't he dandy? Where is that extra person going to appear from in a real-life nursing care facility scenario? I appreciate the learning and being showed how, but it's how realistic these tasks are set up, that I'm skeptical in the lack of realistic depiction. Did not show how we are to physically lift the person for some of these video's, or how we manage them without a convenient spare man standing right there. I'm honestly just trying to give well intentioned feedback as im trying to learn in realistic standards and i hope you understand where im coming from. Im still taking away a lot in the learning process as some of these things never applied to my assigned home health residents and it was actually higher level demands, but the basics are fundemental in preventing infection, injury, illness, worsening conditions, while providing comfort, quality of life, and basic needs of compassion, all of such that all life have a right to.

    • @Sephushx
      @Sephushx 3 роки тому +3

      I would say you have a point, however these videos are meant as a tool to strictly learn the scenarios to pass for the CNA skills exam. I feel as if any course aside from the skills will prepare new CNAs for the possible difficult and realistic scenarios that they will come across while working. Training at a new facility and learning about their patients should take care of the realistic difficulties that will come with the job.

      This skill is performed according to current Prometric testing standards and scenarios. You are never required to raise the bed to a comfortable working position during the exam (it is not a graded checkpoint) because not all beds in all settings are able to be raised (home care, assisted living facilities, low-income nursing homes and convalescent centers may not have adjustable beds). If you did want to raise the bed, it would be done before you put on your gloves so you don't contaminate your gloves by touching the unclean bed controls. Don't forget to lower the bed at the end of the skill (automatic failure) - the patient expects the floor to be right where they left it and may fall if the floor is not where they expect it to be! Siderails are not required for the exam and their use is not graded, which means that you must provide safety during the skill regardless of side rails. Ensuring that the patient is always in the middle of the bed using the technique in the video will satisfy safety requirements. Thank you!

    I thought that touching the bed before washing your hands after a skill is an automatic fail? Because your dirty hands are not allowed to touch the inside of their bed?

    • @4yourcna
      @4yourcna  7 років тому +19

      The very last thing you will do before you leave the room is wash your hands. Touching the bed is not a problem - you have the patient's germs on your hands but the patient (the CAUSE of those germs) is still in the bed too! Hope this helps!

    Hi Miss Patty I love your videos! It helps so much when we’re in class practicing for our skills 🤗.
    I had a question about this skill in particular.. after cleaning the patient would it be okay if we removed the soiled chucks from her BEFORE we did basin cleaning and returning our supplies? I was just thinking how in the video you touched the sink handles, then touched the patient again right after. Would it be okay if we took care of the chucks first, so we don’t contaminate the patient after touching the sink? Thank you so much for all your help! ❤️

    I am a caregiver for my mother and was looking for a video to train new PCA's. First, the catheter doesn't sit up that high and the legs need to be bent to reach where it really sits. So this may be helpful for someone passing an exam using a dummy but not helpful at all for the real life situation

    We were taught to do everything about like this, except with some steps in reverse. For example, we're instructed to clean the perineal area before the catheter tubing, and starting from the furthest region of the groin (the crevice between the legs), working our way in 'til we get to the penis or labia. Then, we do the catheter tubing. It makes sense to do it this way, being that it's "cleanest" to dirtiest, but I'm not trying to be one of those "this is wrong" sorts of people. Just curious why there are subtle differences in skills between states.

    • @4yourcna
      @4yourcna  8 років тому +11

      Using the "leaves" method, there is no transfer of pathogens from one area to another, so cleanest to dirtiest does not really apply. The reason it is done this way (general nursing principles) is that you do not want "outside" germs to come into contact with the urethra, which could cause a UTI. Best nursing practices state that when providing female peri care, the urethral area should be cleaned first, then work outward. Again, because of using the "leaves" method the potential for cross contamination is reduced, but this is just general nursing procedure. For the exam, the clinical skills checklist does not indicate a specific method (catheter first or peri area first) nor does it specify outer to inward or innermost to outer. Hope this helps!

    • @TonTon.2142
      @TonTon.2142 8 років тому +2

      Thank you for the thorough response! Maybe that's just my teacher's way of doing things? Also, I should note that there are some errors in the way we're told to perform our skills (from the skills book), and that the nursing board or what have you is in the process of editing it. The current skills book just came out in 2015 though, so it's hard to believe that they're still messing up, but.. I guess.
      Anyway, yeah, I get what you're saying!

    • @4yourcna
      @4yourcna  8 років тому +5

      When in doubt, refer to the clinical skills checklist published by Prometric for your specific state. It will indicate the specific testing standards. Best of luck!

    So what happens in a situation where the patient cannot scoot back and forth. How do you place the underpads.

    • @4yourcna
      @4yourcna  10 місяців тому

      You would then move the patient using the method indicated in the care plan (draw sheet, segment method, asking the patient to scoot toward you or lift their hips, slide sheet, etc.). Everyone is different and will have a different level of ability. Your care plan will give you information on how to work with THIS particular patient, based on their level of ability and conditions. Hope this helps!

      Please be aware that the care plan dictates the specific actions that must be taken - in a clinical setting AND for the exam. It is important to perform the skills exactly as indicated in the care plan. While I agree that in clinical settings time management may be an issue, each step is important for the patient's health and well being. Thanks for your comment!

      The testing care plan for Catheter Care (as seen in the beginning of the video) will instruct the student to clean the catheter and peri area only. The clinical skills checklist for this skill states: "For testing purposes, only the cleansing of the front perineal area and catheter are evaluated; cleansing of the rectal area and buttocks is not tested in this skill" so testing will require cleansing of the perineal area. We always follow the care plan! Hope this helps!

    • @4yourcna
      @4yourcna  5 років тому +1

      The book you are referring to does NOT reflect current testing checkpoints. The checkpoints (in the comment above) are based on what the TEST expects from you...which includes catheter and peri care. By only cleaning the catheter, you are not following the care plan for THIS patient. You MUST follow the care plan. Our video on the care plan explains this more thoroughly.

    Hi patty thank you for taking your time to making this video, just one question my school teach us that we need to use to basins one for rinsing and the other to add soap and also that we need to empty dirty water in the toilet when we do any perineal care. can I just use one basin for testing purpose? thank you

    • @4yourcna
      @4yourcna  6 років тому

      For the exam, you will only have one basin for washing. Please see this video for more information: ua-cam.com/video/dE_zN3d9-gA/v-deo.html but one basin is sufficient and you shouldn't use unnecessary supplies that the patient will have to pay for. As you can see in the video, no soiled washcloths go back into the basin, so it only holds clean water...there are no body fluids in this basin, so it doesn't HAVE to be emptied into the toilet. But, even if you DID place soiled items in the basin (you shouldn't but this is for illustration only)...think of yourself in the bathtub...those same areas are getting washed, and the water doesn't have to be scooped out and disposed of in the toilet just because of exposure to your private parts. Exposure to private areas does not cause the water to have to be disposed of in the toilet. You simply rinse that bathtub out after use. Hope this helps! :-)
