  • In this video I will be unboxing my new DeWALT planer. I'll talk about some of the functions of this particular planer and go over how to use it, some do's and don't's and then we'll give it an honest test run by cutting and planing some strips for a cutting board I'll be making in the next video.
    Remember to use the lock bar! I noticed I didn’t use it a couple times in the video. I was still getting used to it. This is an important step as it will leave less snipe on the wood.

    I wouldn't let my kids get near this power tool. Kids will put their hands anywhere to explore and this things has extremely super sharp blades in it.

    Don't forget to push down on the lock before running your piece through the machine. It will stop the gouge (snipe) on the leading edge.

      Thanks! I did notice I failed to do that while planing in the video.

      Seems like a real pain to have to lock and unlock it for each pass after making a very slight adjustment.

    What's the dial for on the right side? I'm thinking about getting g this one. Thanks in advance.

    • @greentreewoodworks6172
      @greentreewoodworks6172  2 роки тому

      That dial is a turret stop. It prevents the planer from being lowered too far. For example if you're using a planer sled and have thin pieces it'll prevent you from planing your sled. Thanks for the comment!

    Was wondering, do you need to remove the dust collector piece when you put it away, if you raise the blades all the way?

      You know…I would think so but I’m not really sure…? My planer is in storage until the new shop is built but if I remember I’ll find out and reply back to this comment for ya. Thanks for watching!

    Can you put a cedar log that has been cut from above 12" long to shave the bottom end to set level?

    • @greentreewoodworks6172
      @greentreewoodworks6172  7 місяців тому

      If I’m understanding the question right…I think you can by using what we call a “planer sled” and use super glue/shims to hold in place to get one side flat. Then when you have the one flat surface you can flip it over and run it through without the sled. I hope that answered your question!

    You didn’t have the Lock bar down. You could see the plainer moving UP as you ran each piece threw the plainer. If you would have had the bar down you would not have gotten the missed section or Snipe

      Yes I agree, I noticed that after I had already posted the video haha. I've used this planer hundreds of times since I made this video and I've used the lock bar every time since then. 👍🏼

    The latest Dewalt dw734 does not come with the 10mm/8mm wrench, or place to put it. Its called Type 20 i think as opposed to type 1.

      I was wondering where my wrench was. Just picked it up this morning.

      @@peterfryer6915 what is the wrench used for anyway?

    • @peterfryer6915

      I assumed it was for the 4 bolts under the feed tables but I'm not certain

    • @markmurto
      @markmurto 3 роки тому

      @@peterfryer6915 Well, the holding place is eliminated on the model 20 tool tray, but you can get a model 1 tool tray for $14 on eParts and its an exact fit. You can even get the stickers. I was bummed when Home Depot sent me the model 20, but the wrench I can do without I guess.

      That’s good to know. The Lowe’s closest to me still has the “type 1” on display but I’m curious to see what’s actually being sold. 🧐

    Why didn't you just run the intire board so you don't have snip?

    • @greentreewoodworks6172
      @greentreewoodworks6172  2 роки тому +1

      Hindsight (and how I do all my work milling) I would’ve cut the whole board to the desired length, planed it, then cut it into strips. I’m not gonna lie, this was early in my woodworking journey and I didn’t know any better 😅

    If you're an idiot like me, make sure you don't unlock that bar with the head too far up. Your fingers will appreciate not being slammed between the bar and top hood.

    • @greentreewoodworks6172
      @greentreewoodworks6172  3 роки тому +1

      Haha I never thought of that. I bet that would hurt. I usually only plane 4/4 boards and sometimes 8/4. But nothing big enough to raise the head up that far.

    Small children and power tools are not a good mix. They don't know the difference if it's powered or not especially when daddy is at the lumber store.
