    Glad to know your dust collector is behind the blower. I have my DW735 on a cart I made that has two dust boxes in it. I have a 6 inch PVC elbows and a tube going directly down into the box and then I hook my dust collector to the box. I was worried about the air pushing or not having enough negative pressure so I added a series of holes for a 10x20 furnace filter. Kind of like a pressure relief but I wasn’t sure if I should add it but if it’s pushing harder than my dust collector it makes it slightly more useful.

      Interesting idea! And yes, the blower on the DW 735 is very powerful. It currently overwhelms my current dust collector 😂 need to upgrade that

    Anyone who has this unit, your not supposed to use a shop vac. It actually will hinder the blower on the unit.

      I’ve noticed that empirically but never saw it it the manual, was there somewhere else you found that?

      What will it do to the blower?

    • @NorthwestCraftsman
      @NorthwestCraftsman  5 місяців тому +2

      @@MDD1966I’m not sure. I haven’t seen any documentation not to hook it up, but, if the shop vac isn’t powerful enough it will actually hinder the blower causing it to work harder and potentially clog. If you have a dust deputy, I’d run it with no suction, just blow into it and it filters fine.

      And that’s mostly true, with my helical blade it cares a lot less than the straight blades.

    Some good tips for sure. Thank you. As I just mentioned a few minutes ago on your Cyber Monday tips, I have the 735. One thing I find ODD is ... the 'max depth' wheel on the left has a limited number of settings. Seems they could have added more settings, eg 3/8", 7/16" and so on.

    With a very short 4" hose connected to a Harbor Freight 2HP dust collector, I get blowout around the dust collector joints. It doesn't keep up with my 735. It is better than not using a dust collector, but it moves a lot air by itself.

    • @NorthwestCraftsman

      Good to know! I was thinking about using on of those in my next setup!

  • @jasonm887

    It works alright... when I'm milling hard maple, it will only take off mabe a 64th per pass. So, if you have a significant amount of material to remove on several boards, get ready to run a couple of dozen times. It's loud, so have hearing protection. Dust collection helps for sure.

    • @NorthwestCraftsman
      @NorthwestCraftsman  4 місяці тому +1

      All true! I’ve found that running full width boards of hard wood is very difficult for it. A helical blade helps with the noise but it does pull more power, tripping the thermal fuse more often. If you’re using it as a money maker, I’d invest in something more powerful. I’ll likely be upgrading soon.

  • @skeery2605

    FYI. When using this planer even with 4 inch dust collection. I still get chips building up on the bed of the planer but that's when I plane material around 4 inch or thicker. It just cant keep up when the knives are in a higher position.
    The depth gauge is a joke on the 735 planer. The first month I owned mine I put a Wixey DRO on it. I would recommend not using it without that. That thing is a game changer. I also have one on my table saw.

    • @NorthwestCraftsman
      @NorthwestCraftsman  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for the heads up on the chip build up. I always end up with a pile around it unless I’m planing a very wide board that increases the extraction up instead of down 😂
      I’ll have to check that out! Do you find that you’re able to plane to correct thickness repeatable with it? Seems like a dumb question but after the default gauge, I feel the need 😂

    • @skeery2605
      @skeery2605 2 роки тому

      @@NorthwestCraftsman As long as it's setup correctly I believe it does. It seems to work great for repeatability.

      Good to know! I looked them up. Pretty slick. How did you mount yours? I've seen that as one of the complaints on the 735 specifically.

      @@NorthwestCraftsman I also added 4" 90 degree silicone elbow hose coupler from a turbo kit. I found it on Amazon. I haven't seen other people use anything like it. It helps to get the hose out of the way of the stock exiting the planer. It similar to the setup you have. I think its just flexible enough to not break anything if I bump or move my planer.

    Are you satisfied with this planer ? Is it the type 1 or the 12. It seems that since it is made in China instead of Taiwan several users have experienced problems with the engine of this new version made in China. You can see the type right next to the serial number. I'm asking you this because it's on a big discount here in Canada (-$220 off the regular price $899 canadian dollar). The demonstrator in store was Type 1 but the one I just bought is Type 12 so I wonder if I will return it. Has anyone experienced any issues with type 12 vs type 1? THANKS !

    • @NorthwestCraftsman
      @NorthwestCraftsman  10 місяців тому +1

    Did you replace the cutters with a helical head?

    • @NorthwestCraftsman
      @NorthwestCraftsman  19 днів тому

      Great question. I did and it’s been mostly good though, the helical blades in this machine are not all their cracked up to be. Don’t get me wrong, the finish is great and longevity of the blades is great. But because of the continuous loading on the motor, I trip my breaker frequently when I take anything more than 1/32” passes on hardwood. Doesn’t seem like a big deal but when you’re doing a big project, I’ve sunk hours into planing.

    Amateur Tip of the day: The Dewalt 735 has its own extraction power and I just have a really heavy and dense felt bag attached to a similar pipe set connected to the output. 95% of waste just goes in.

    • @NorthwestCraftsman
      @NorthwestCraftsman  3 місяці тому +1

      100% accurate. This isn’t well known enough amongst woodworkers 😂 for a long time I just ran my planer into the small Oneida dust collector hooked to a barrel with nothing on the outlet. Filtered 95+% of the debris as you said.

    • @michaelmenkes7233
      @michaelmenkes7233 3 місяці тому

      @@NorthwestCraftsman its the best reason of all to buy the Dewalt. Add bag. Run machine. Empty bag when full. Cost and convenience. It also has the best finishing cut in its class so long as you strategize to minimize snipe. I just handle the wood on exit to keep it flat as it goes out.
