Ha! I love watching the descent into desaturated blushes from afar, but I just don’t think they suit my coloring/undertones! Things can look muddy on me so quickly, while a BRIGHT red cream blush somehow works as part of my no makeup makeup routine despite my fair skin… it’s great for my budget to watch people who are into makeup I know won’t look as good on me as it does on them.
I would also really enjoy that!
The best desaturate matte tones for singles can be found with Dandylions co! However, the formula is not a fav for everyone because they're hand pressed rather softly, they tend to be more fragile than most matte eyeshadow. That said, he makes some of THE most beautiful & desaturate tones I own & my singles collection is ridiculous. Cannot recommend enough!

I LOVE that brands are coming out with tubing mascara formulas. Because I personally don’t like having to go through thrive to get their mascara since I work at ulta and have access to the tarte one or now the milani one.

I agree, but prob for different reasons...but if you could also do a "academia in the woods" look, light or dark, I would be thrilled, since I genuinely need to cultivate that. I work in two different towns and need a more approachable, simpler look out in the countryside (partly for practical reasons, so don't tell me to be myself, I am a fundraiser lol) but also need the boundaries & gravitas of a strong face, if that makes sense. And apparently in some areas, sparkly eye makeup & highlighter do not go with hoodies & sporting around in old parkas lol...funny the people there aren't gonna love that I am queer, but I literally have to butch it up to fit in with the farm ladies... I'll be me eventually, but there are more important things to be done and I gotta build relationships. So yeah, blather aside, sporty outdoorsy academia please, prob leaning toward dark....and with glasses ofc

Maybe this is just me personally, but I don’t mind if you never review drugstore products. There are plenty of other creators who do that. To me, if you aren’t excited about the packaging and the products, don’t feel like you need to buy them.

My mind of drugstore packaging is if the price goes up because the formula is improved then I don’t care about packaging so long as it doesn’t waste the product or gets gross like some high end stuff does - looking at you Charlotte Tillbury light wands and bronzers/contour and Tarte concealers!!!

i can appreciate that Juvia's place is an affordable black owned brand, however I think the problem you're referring to is them reposting a makeup artist where she described her eye make-up using an anti-asian slur. They posted an apology to their story and the artist also posted *then deleted* an apology as well. Felt pretty disingenuous to me and who in this day doesn't know that ch**k is derogatory??? Just my thoughts on why you might have distanced yourself in the past and why I will continue not supporting their company. I think affordable (or not prestige) black owned brands I'd rather support would be Mented, Uoma, LYS, and Ami Cole.

AFAIK the juvia’s place controversy was in 2019, bc they reposted an influencer video using an anti-Asian slur. they deleted and apologized but it definitely left a bad taste in peoples’ mouths. Their apology post is still up on their blog and they compiled a list of resources for helping out with anti-AAPI hate but I don’t remember if they donated or anything. just thought I’d leave this in case anyone else couldn’t remember what happened
AHA okay thank you. I thought it was something within the company. This is a lot more disappointing, but I'm glad they've made an effort since then.
They also immediately posted a photo of an Asian model in their makeup after the video containing the slur to… save face?? It was embarrassing for them, they deleted and then posted their apology
They also have a history of mistreating Black influencers and sending J* Star PR even further back, so they’ve been semi awful for a while
But they deleted it from their Instagram. As a Korean American, I’m still not buying from them.

I’m pretty sure this all happened in the Covid era (so, 2020-2022 sometime) because it was amid a lot of news on hate crimes against Asian people so it was doubly disgusting. Their “apology” was a total non-apology if I’m remembering correctly. And any of the “efforts” they’ve made have come, I suspect, as a result of the swift and harsh financial fallout of so many people choosing to not support them at once.
The Josie Maran 'pro retinol' doesn't have any retinol, they call it a pro retinol complex, it just has some pink algae in it, but it has absolutely no form of retinoids. :((( SO deceiving!
I love her argan oil body cream, she makes some beautiful formulations, but I seriously take issue with her purposely misleading customers like that. It's not necessary, like I said she makes great formulas. But it's trickery with naming conventions and it feels bad when you find out you've been duped.
E: after scrolling I see a couple others noted this too. Aliceintherabbithole does such a great job covering this topic. I hope you address the topic too, it's an interesting one. And a problem that goes much further than just Josie! How many companies say a retinol complex, or say more than 1% when that's the highest percentage it could possibly be? Alice goes in depth on her channel and has me paying closer attention to ingredients lists before I buy!

I just discovered Furtuna a few months ago and I love it! The products are great and they support regenerative agriculture and biodiversity through harvesting wild botanicals. Pricey definitely, but their values as a company seem to be pretty awesome.
I love Josie Maran products BUT her “Pro-Retinol” line does not contain any retinol. It has a lot of amazing ingredients that are great for your skin but when you plug the ingredients into the incidecoder retinol is not one . Neutrogena Retinol Cream, yup it’s there! AliceintheRabbitHole talked about it last week during the Ulta sale. I am looking forward to trying the MAKE Beauty skincare very soon on your recommendations 🥳😎💋

Slugging success for ultra dehydrated skin (I use 2-4 different moisturizers each AM & PM, my skin just has no natural occlusion): I woke up with visible plumping! today after slugging with a combo of aquaphor, Shea & rosehip butter (it's 75% Shea tho), & the Korres probiotic yogurt mask. The mask was a new add-in to the routine. as a sleep mask, it's fine but not groundbreaking (not occlusive enough), but the 3 in combination...WOW I look so plump & healthy! I can't tell (from the korres ingredients list) what is causing the korres to be such a team player, but it might be that the high amount of glycerin really packs in the hydration and the petroleum + Shea keep it truly locked in. This is the first time slugging has actually really worked for me.

Still watching the glorious vid, but wanted to pop in and say, if you use the Make Serum Balm AS a serum step for your lips, by layering it on during your skincare routine, and then layer on something like Laneige lip mask…. OMG your lips will thank you and love you and you’ll be blown away! It’s a serum step! :)
Oh, also, I’ve noticed that you keep saying “going into spring” and as a New Yorker I keep feeling confused… and then I remember, you recently(ish) moved to NE (and I also grew up in FL), but just fyi… winter has hardly even started up here… spring maybe starts in April but we also get blizzards then. @@Justaregularoldplumbus my Make lip serum just kind of sat around until I thought to use it like this, and since then I’ve never looked back! Well, I’m out now and really want another one, so there’s that. I also really try to baby my lips and have been layering (apparently lip slugging?) for years now. My current concoction sans make is QMS, Rhode, followed lastly by either Laneige or Tatcha.

I don't think there is actual retinol in the "pro-retinol" cream by Josie Maran. It's not listed anywhere in the ingredients. I've heard other people gripe about the misleading name of the pro-retinol line. I think maybe she calls it that because of the beta-carotene in the pink algae and beta-carotene is a couple conversion steps away from retinol (which may be possible on the skin)? Anyway, if I'm wrong, someone please correct me but I don't see retinol anywhere in the ingredient list. But it does sound quite lovely nevertheless!

the surratt artistique blush in grisaille is the perfect desaturated nude for my pale girl cheeks. it's listed as a medium taupe contour but is the perfect blush color if you're similarly inclined.

Hi Kackie, I need your encyclopedic knowledge and colour theory expertise: I love the RMS Buriti bronzer for its red (not pink! Red-terracota with almost a hint of purple), it is what gives me the most realistic bronze. In a couple of months, I am going on a long roadtrip on a campervan somewhere hot, so I want to avoid bringing any cream products that may melt if left on the van. What would you say is the powder bronzer that is more similar in tone to RMS Buriti? Thanks a lot!

Ok, slightly random (but still makeup-related) question: I am, ironically, a beauty photographer who doesn't wear a ton of makeup, and generally...let's just say "has issues with" most beauty photography out there. As an opinionated consumer, do you have any pet peeves with beauty photography, or anything you like to see what makes you go, "OOH. Good job, you"? You look at SO many images of makeup and skincare, I'm sure, so I'd be curious about what you're drawn to or what repels you.
I mean, the obvious, when there's a point being made in a before and after and the after is very clearly filtered or airbrushed. It also is really easy to get anything to look good in direct sunlight, but it doesn't make it a good product haha

I've definitely noticed a disconnect between what art directors want vs. what the campaigns *actually* look like, versus what the targeted audience actually responds to, especially having met with them one-on-one, then seeing the new work they produce. I'm definitely on the artsy-fartsy side of things (I mean, I've done a bunch of mixed media *with* makeup, for example), but I figured as a fellow artsy-fartsy person in the makeup realm, you might have opinions. Thanks!

First & foremost, you are NOT a snob for expecting drug store packaging to be decent. I agree 100%! It’s about the experience & with the increased pricing I too expect better packaging!
Secondly, I feel that ELF is overhyped in my opinion.. the flawless filter dupe from elf isn’t it.. like the shades are awful, even the lightest shade is far from a true Fair shade, ya know? I just look orange and I’m over here blending it down my neck like AAHHH!!🤣😅

Ironic that Tarte’s design looks like watermarking meant to prevent the theft of intellectual property, when that’s basically what they’ve done to CT.
I have had a long term love affair with Surratt. Its gorgeous. The lip products have amazing colors. The eyeshadows are honestly very good but the standard ones are not my favorite. All of the single eyeshadow products are so impressive. My recommendation for you is to TRY IT ALL. At least 2 of each eye color formula.

Hi Kackie, I would recommend you trying the Interface from Stratia. I noticed my skin becoming softer and more hydrated. It is a Peptide moisturizer/serum that helps skin barrier and also collagen production.
I recently discovered the Surratt eye laquers and I lovvve themmm. I've long been curious about the foundation because Michelle Wang loves it, but the stingy amount for that high a price felt somehow insulting. Like, at some point in the mists of makeup history the elders decreed that 30 mls is the worshippers' due, so how very dare Surratt proffer a mere 19.
I’d be so excited to see an under 25$ product try on or favorites (both beauty and skincare). Doesn’t particularly have to be drugstore but just lower end, a mix of stuff! Just less $$$ during the recession 💗
I have made a similar expensive mistake in curating my own surratt eye palette, and still I love the formula. Easy to blend, not super saturated color, and lasts all day on my eyes with a primer. I like them better than Lisa Eldridg

That’s one I can’t make my mind up about whether I like it or not on me but I think I just don’t have an ideal shade. I ended up caving and bought the super bright pink blush from too faced (I can use all the blurring I can get, don’t have this color) and the hourglass tide lipstick also from Ulta since I had points. Unfortunately I’m quite pale and light pink lips so I think Tide from the video swatches I saw would be a my lips but better color. I love that top!

YES re: drugstore pricing! My 15 year old self staring at Physician's Formula compared to be just walking by on my way to pick up vitamins.... OMG Physician's Formula, sorry but has some nerve! Like almost $20 for a foundation? NO. I personally don't buy much drugtore now a days, although ELF has surprised me lately with a few gems, but I would never spend $20 on a drugstore chinzty product!
Ok y’all, at some point there was a conversation in the comments about which “color season” Kackie is, and someone suggested bright spring. I am (maybe?) embarrassed to say but I’ve been thinking about this ever since. With the caveat you really need a professional draping to assess… I’m now pretty firmly in the camp that Kackie is a Dark Fall! I’m bright spring and my wife is dark fall so I’ve spent way too much time thinking about the differences/similarities in the 2 warm sub seasons closest to winter.

@@nussimuck soft autumn seems too muted with less contrast (I don’t think of soft autumn’s rocking the shirt she’s wearing today!) Her eyes are so striking they give a lot of depth and contrast… but Kackie def. looks better in muted fall shades than I do 🤷🏻♀️. Also Kackie if you read this sorry if it’s weird we are over here analyzing your color season 😂
